Service was warm once seated though, and for the quality the check is fair. Fifteen years in and it still beats most of the newer red sauce spots nearby. Go on a weeknight. Tips: Bar seats are first-come only, no reservations. Walk in at 5:30, order at the bar, skip the wait entirely.

It came with a tomato chili sauce, which tasted good, but was not needed for this. We ordered the tuna to pair with the bread and it was a great combo. I ended up ordering the hangar steak and it was good. Full of flavor and the chimichurri sauce was a nice touch. Though, I would have like the taste of the beef to come out more. The marinade overpowered the meat IMO. My wife got the Rigatoni alla Gricia. I like the pasta and it was bouncy, but the dish was too salty though. We ended the night with the basque cheesecake and I have to say that it wasn't my favorite. The texture seemed off. Normally basque cheesecake is smooth and creamy, but this was a little lumpy like when you over cook eggs in a dessert. Overall, the service was great and the vibes of the restaurant was on point. The food didn't blow me out of the water, but it was good. I would come back here for the focaccia though.

We had to request the bill from the manager & paid at the hostess stand. Before paying, I spoke with the manager and explained what had occured. He was more professional than the server, but he was still dismissive of my concerns and of the service we received. Management seemed happy enough to promote the "option". The food was okay, definitely not enough to make up for the poor service and handling of a serious dietary issue. Needless to say I will not be returning.

HOUSE-MADE FOCACCIA - 10 Super bouncy with a bit of chew, this was probably the best focaccia I've ever eaten. It came generously drizzled with olive oil and alongside chopped peppers drenched in even more olive oil, which added a nice little kick. We highly recommend starting with this. TAGLIATELLE - 27 Out of the four pastas, this was my absolute favorite. I love the thin yet chewy texture of the tagliatelle, and the bolognese sauce was rich and hearty. Finished with just the right amount of Parmigiano, both the pasta texture and sauce were sheer perfection. PICI 'CACIO E PEPE' - 23 This was such a simple pasta, yet so delicious. It was incredibly creamy and cheesy, with hints of fresh black pepper flavor that blew standard at-home black pepper grinders out of the water. Despite it being the simplest pasta of the night, I enjoyed it immensely. RIGATONI - 32 This pasta was simple yet slightly innovative, featuring sausage paired with a broccoli-based pesto. There was a slight bitterness that was polarizing among our group. While this wasn't my favorite pasta, I appreciated the creativity. PERCIATELLI NERO - 35 This dish packed in more components than just pasta and sauce: plenty of crab, tomatoes, and crispy breadcrumbs on top. However, the combination wasn't very memorable. OLIVE OIL CAKE - 14 Served with a pile of golden raisins and fancy whipped cream, this ended up being a bit of a miss. The raisins were a bit too sweet, and the cake's texture was uneven -- some bites were soft and moist, while others felt dry. A couple of others in my group also felt the same way. Overall, I'd give L'Artusi a 4.5/5; it was mostly hits with a couple of misses. The pasta portions are quite small. Since each dish is primarily carbs and sauce, I'd imagine you'll likely need an appetizer or a pasta and a half to leave full. Still, I'd definitely come back for the focaccia, tagliatelle, and the cacio e pepe.

This small neighborhood Italian was worth the dozen or so block walk. First, the service was spot on. The young friendly staff, from the greeters to the waiters and chefs (who are in view) were eager to make us feel at home. Reasonable prices on the wines by the glass. Warm, toasted baguette served with sundried tomato spread was quickly before us (we even got a second on the bread without having to ask). We left nothing on our plates the rest of the night -- all excellent -- my husband had the fettucini bolognese, I enjoyed the pork Saltimboca. Both had a home-spun quality in taste and presentation. The appetizer of grilled vegetables - nicely charred - was served with creamy burrata chese. The grilled octopus was cooked with cherry tomatoes and potatoes - hearty. We shared the apple cake (formed like a muffin) with the pistachio gelato and berries. Tasty. Coffee Americano and Macchiato finished our meal. There were a couple of large parties (6-8 people) and all seemed to be happy and getting top-notch service. We plan to return. They are now serving brunch with a typical Italian menu (ricotta pancakes, pastas, etc.) and we'll definitely try it one of these weekend mornings. read more

I have been living on the Upper East Side for 15 years and have found few restaurants that give me a cozy Village feel with iron chef quality. Ryan Skeen's innovation on the tasting menu will trump most of the local eateries while match well against NYC's best. My wife and I have visited the East 83rd street nook 3 times. Once diving into the well portioned tasting menu and twice dining a la cart. We travel south almost every weekend to explore New York's latest and greatest, but with the opening of 83 1/2, I think you will see the Soho/Village crowd travel north. My TOP 3 Favorites: Pork Sugo Pappardelle Monkfish Braised In Tomato the Burger - (Brunch) My Wife's Top 3 Favorites: Liege Salad With Crispy Pork Red Snapper Crudo Roasted Carrots (Amazing) Please know that this is not a cheap meal, but the portions and the farm fresh ingredients are certainly worth it. Not a good look when a customer orders a pasta entree with a pre-made sauce (ragu's take hours to make and it's delicious, this post isn't about food quality, it's about operational procedures) for pick-up, 45 minutes is beyond egregious. Especially when that one order was placed the same time as a larger order for delivery. The delivery was set earlier. This is a great strategy to lose your day to day customers that use you as an extension of their kitchen. Yes it's Friday, yes the dining room isn't large, and for the sake of your business I hope you're busy. Be mindful of your online apps, without proper oversight, getting too greedy for orders can kill your service, especially when there's competition right across the street. read more

I've been at 83 1/2 for the first time last Saturday with my boyfriend and we both liked it very much! The food was SPECTACULAR! We started by sharing a Cavolo Salad (very big portion, great taste, different from the usual salads) and the Polipo (little spicy, fresh, very tasty). As main courses I tried the Pasta of the day, an Italian homemade Cavateli with salmon, cream and peas (the pasta was so fresh and the Burrata was very creamy) and my boyfriend had the Saltimbocca with truffled mashed potato (delicious, so tasty). I went here on a sunday night with my 2 years old daughter and my husband. We were just expecting a regular meal, instead we had a sensational dinner! Every dish we had just made our mouths water. By far my favorite was the Zucchini crusted Branzino. IMPECCABILE! My husband instead loved the Girelle, rolled gnocchi with spinach and ricotta - just amazing! The. calamari was tough as Vulcanized rubber. The greens, tomatoes and carrots were served with nothing on them. I mean nothing. When I requested some oil, the server came back to our table and sprinkled some all over everything on the plate! God forbid she should have brought some oil/vinegar for the table. The 4 season (Quatro Stagione) Pizza was as bland and taseless as imaginable. The four toppings were fresh-out-of-a-can. Seriously, the kitchen doesn't have a clue. I get the impression that this one of those restaurants that has gone into a decline, maybe second or third generation ownership? Maybe different owners? I should have gotten worried when I saw that all the tables outside on a very fine summer day were empty. When our server brought the check, she asked how everything was. I told her the truth. She didn't disagree with me at all.

The owner was so funny! He's definitely going to tell you what to order, but trust his recommendations. We got the burrata to share, which was delicious, but nothing extraordinary! For my main I got Linguine with Vodka Sauce. The sauce was delicious, perfectly creamy and savory. The pasta was a tad bit too al dente for my taste, but I still enjoyed it!

I had a tortellini soup (good, but small), and veal tortellini (doubled up, but still a good portion in a good sauce), everything is tasty, but this is all stuff I can get in Brooklyn for a fraction of the price. Oh, the rosemary focaccia bread is absolutely delicious and unlimited, but the amount they give you is stingy. In fact, the whole experience is measured and stingy. On a hot day like today, they barely kept me hydrated, which I needed to be kept because you can have grated, salty, Parmesan cheese on anything you want. At least the owner is a nice guy. He is partly why this is not a three star review. I am not putting this as a favorite, but if somebody were to ask me what is a good Italian restaurant in the Upper East Side, I would not hesitate to give this one a shoutout.
