I live on the block and attended brunch here with a large group - a mixed older / younger crowd. The waitstaff was incredibly accommodating and sweet. There was no pressure to do bottomless brunch, but those who decided to we're pleased with their drinks. The brunch menu is a nice mix of breakfast and lunch options (I feel like some places have predominantly breakfast-focused brunch; I generally prefer lunch). I had a chicken sandwich which featured avocado and a great sauce. I'd love to come back here for dinner. The specials on the board outside always make my stomach growl. read more

It was such a pleasure dining here tonight! Arrived with our group of 6 and only had to wait a few minutes before being seated (with a reservation). Daniel our server was impeccable, friendly without being too overbearing. Great suggestions and speedy service for our group. Food was incredible, eggplant meatballs, frutti di mare, lamb chops. This is a quiet, fairly upscale but not snooty, delicious Italian restaurant with wonderful service. My server was not pretentious like some at fancy restaurants, the staff was welcoming and while it's a fancy place the vibes remain welcoming and relaxing. It's a bit pricy but it's not absurd and the food is worth it. The menu is mouth watering, it's nearly impossible to pick something and there's so many creative choices. Yummy appetizers too. The most amazing food! Below is a description of what four of us shared amongst us. The ambiance is very nice, soothing and romantic. They just hired a new chef and the food speaks for itself. so good. Antipasti: Burrata was amazing. Warm and gooey in the center, just a pure delight. Highly recommend this. Tortino di spinaci had a lovely touch of truffle and finished off with a perfectly fried egg. Pasta: All the pasta was homemade and cooked to al dente. The bucatini was wonderful, as was the fettuccini. Main: We had the sweet potato encrusted branzino (a special that day) and it was delicious. My personal favorite were the pistachio mashed potatoes served with the duck. If I could come back and just get a tub of those I'd be so happy. The pork filet was also very delicious. Dessert: We ordered one of each dessert but my favorite were the ricotta cheesecake, the poached pears with mascarpone and the tiramisu. Overall a delightful experience! Went here last night and all the reviews are right. The UES can be quite a foodie desert but here's a place with delicious food and plentiful portions that didn't break $50 a head for appetizer, pasta, shared dessert, and wine. We had the following and recommend them all: insalate cavolo, brussels sprouts, pappardelle al ragu d'anatra, trofie pasta, cremisu (a tiramisu topped with nutella, genius). The pasta portions were so large we took home half and look forward to having them tonight. read more

Some of the best Italian food we have had! They have many vegetarian options. For appetizers, we had the polenta ai funghi which was creamy goodness and parmigiana (eggplant balls) which fresh and melted in your mouth. We had the truffle ravioli (lots of truffle flavor) and spinach gnocchi for dinner, and cremisu (tiramisu topped with nutella custard) for dessert... SO good. This restaurant is amazing! We walked past it several times with the outdoor seating and each item looked amazing. We finally went and it did not disappoint. I really don't think you can go wrong with any option on the menu. The staff is also absolutely amazing! My fiancee and I always share items on the menu and knowing this, they separated the meals for us. You'll want to take the slowest bites and savor each one. Came here for a celebratory dinner and it was quite nice for us girls. The restaurant is small, which is nice. We called ahead to have a bottle of champagne ready when we arrived, which they did and was lovely. They have a nice selection of appetizers, salads, pastas and main courses. Food is good and I would come back, but as another reviewer said, I won't be RUSHING to come back. I am in love with the Eggplant Parmesan. The food is absolutely fantastic! I know that some other people have had problems with the heat, but if you ask for them to make it warm, it comes out at just the right heat. My only problem with the restaurant is that the service asked one too many times if we were ready to order. I felt the service was rather snooty. I came here for dinner. Very calm and dim ambiance. Started off with the calamari which were great. Had the Short Rib Pasta. So delicious and generously portioned. The bread and vinaigrette were delicious as well. For dessert i ordered the Tartufo. It was so delicious. No complaints. The waiters were courteous and attentive. One of my favorites on the upper east side. All the pasta dishes are delicious. The chianti braised short ribs pomodoro is as good as it gets - very flavorful. And the homemade beggers purse filled with four cheese and pear, brown butter, sage, toasted walnut - not sure what it is but it was delicious and my mother-in-laws go to. I continue to go to 83 1/2 about once a month. Usually with a group of 8 to 12 people. They always treat us great, and are very accommodating about our bringing our own bottles of wine. I enjoy the food and the service, and the comfortable space. My favorite dishes are the pasta with short ribs, the pasta with duck ragu, and the Polo Milanese (sometimes, they will do Veal Milanese for me, even though its not on the menu). read more

I'm a foodie and know area well. Great concept poor execution. Need to add more to menu. Need to list all potentially offensive ingredients as people have allergies or don't like onions or garlic. Salads are loaded w onions and the word onion isn't on the menu. The Chef was a nice guy. The Whiskey list is amazing. The space is small and cramped. I don't think it lasts a year unless they lose the attitude and start catering better to the high maintenance local clients. The UES needs and wants more farm to table restaurants. I attended an engagement party here and our group was about 10-12 people. Even though the restaurant itself is small, it was perfectly cozy for our group. The food was absolutely delicious but what stood out to me most was the great service. Our group was pretty rambunctious but our waiter was attentive and polite. They even helped us uncork the champagne our party brought. I recommend this restaurant for any time you want amazing food and great service in an intimate but not intimidating atmosphere. read more

I recently ate at 83.5. to be perfect honest, I have never (and I have lived in NY my whole life and NYC for 16 years) experienced a chef like this. First, the good (there actually is good). Place is very nice looking, waiter was extremely nice and professional and the GM was pleasant in dealing with the bad. Menu was interesting, food was pretty good, but the prices are VERY HIGH. BAD: Chef is total A-Hole. The steak that was ordered medium came out blood red, the waiter came over and was very nice about it. However, the cook (Skeen) felt it necessary to yell from the kitchen that the meat was medium (with major attitude). He insisted that rare is cold and red and that this meat was warm and red (or something like that). When asked why he inserted himself in the conversation, and did so with attitude, he became even more obnoxious. Soon after, he came out of the kitchen and was bitching and moaning to the GM while pointing at us. When told by my brother that the meat was ok once he cooked it more, but we would not come back due to his bad attitude, Skeen said "get out and don't come back. We don't want you here anyway." When I tell you that we could not have been nicer in our complaint, we could not have been. With this guy in the open kitchen, this place is doooooomed. Additionally, despite the fact that we were the only table for a good hour, th entrees still took almost an hour and half to come out!!! Its really a shame, because the owner of the place is a sweet guy, the concept is great and needed in the area. Additionally, I do not know if its just coincidence, but a few of us do not feel well this morning???? I had family in from out of town and the chef completely ruined our dinner. read more

My boyfriend and I went here about 2 weeks ago for our anniversary. The food and service were both great. We started with the eggplant parm appetizer which was very unique and delicious-would definitely recommend. For dinner, I had the pappardelle al Ragu di manzo and my boyfriend had the veal special. Both were great. For dessert we had a Nutella creme brûlée/tiramisu combination which was one of the best things I have ever ate. We also each had a drink. When my boyfriend made the reservation he mentioned we would be celebrating our anniversary. Once we were seated, the waiter offered us a glass of prosecco which we assumed was complimentary as the glasses were already on our table and no other guests were offered a glass. However when we got the bill we saw we were charged $13 a glass. This put me off a little which is the reason I took a star off their review. I would still recommend 83 and 1/2 as it's a great neighborhood spot but just be aware that you may be charged for things that are implied to be complimentary. read more

Ordered take out from this place and granted I knew since it was take out that the food wasn't going to be excellent. I ordered 2 orders of the truffle ravioli and the prosciutto appetizer. $75.00 worth of food and it was the worst thing I've had. One of the containers in my bag holding the truffle ravioli broke and the sauce was everywhere, the food was completely Cold, there was only 5 raviolis in each order and the containers were too big to even put them in so they were all over the place. What's more disheartening is that I called the place and let the hostess know what was going on. The owner called me within 5 minutes and I explained to him exactly what had happened. I was expecting to be sent another meal or my money back for this horrible experience. His exact words were "I can offer you a complimentary $15.00 glass of wine if you ever come in". I literally couldn't believe he said that. I threw the food out and I will never order from this place again please be cautious. read more

2nd night since the opening. Simple menu 3 choices in each section (maybe not such a bad thing). Started with shrimp with bean salad. Shrimp served med rare very tender and tasty, beans nice and juicy. Entree was Hanger steak nicely cooked but a little cold with a tangy (strange) corn salad. Other entree was bacon and tomato pasta with sea urchin. Uni is a v acquired taste and not acquired by my guest at dinner! Still early days so giving rating for food.
