That being said, I was looking forward to checking it out - and learning along the way. Sfoglia is located on the UES, and walking in, we were immediately greeted by a compartmentalized space. The restaurant is broken up into multiple rooms that each give off a warm, inviting aesthetic. There is not much decor per se, but this looks like a repurposed space and was filled with decorative fixtures - so no extras were really needed. We were seated in a private room upstairs - accessible via a closed staircase and equipped with its own bathroom (including a tub) and dedicated kitchen prep area. As is the standard for these dinners, the food was served family style - though I infer these are available in individual portions on the regular menu. We were started with bread service, charcuterie boards, and Caesar salad. These were all good - the bread was the standout as it was warm with a super crispy crust and soft interior. We were served three mains: roasted chicken, pappardelle Bolognese, and branzino. I wasn't too impressed with any of these. The chicken was the best one - the white meat was juicy, but the beans that they were served on top of were not flavorful. The branzino was slightly (and surprisingly) tough, and the pappardelle was overcooked. Everything was quite mid. We closed out with dessert - they served us slices of chocolate tres leches cake which was good. Service was very good - the team was super attentive and all the courses came out at a good pace. Overall, Sfoglia was fine - the aesthetics were unique, but I was hoping the food lived up to its surroundings. I'm not against returning, but I'm not running back.

You can usually walk in and get a seat. Most of the wait staff is super nice. But they're not as attentive as some other restaurants, even when the place appears slow. Some of the waiters also forget or screw up any modifications to orders - "hold the onions," "salad instead of fries," etc. They nail any orders without modifications. Again, I'll keep coming back. We were warmly welcomed by our server who doubled as the bartender. I ordered an espresso martini with tequila and no Baileys, and I have to say, it was absolutely perfect. My mom ordered the Gollosa salad, and I went with the truffle gnocchi. She loved her salad, and as a huge truffle and gnocchi fan, I expected to love my dish too. Unfortunately, it was severely lacking flavor, which was disappointing since truffles usually have such a rich, potent taste. Things took a turn when I mentioned to our server that I didn't enjoy the gnocchi. His attitude noticeably changed, and he immediately asked what else I wanted instead. I ordered the Diavola pizza, but he then asked if I was sure I wanted to send the gnocchi back. For a second time, I explained that it lacked flavor, and I also ordered a glass of Montepulciano. When we finished and asked for the check, I noticed the gnocchi had not been removed from the bill. When I pointed it out, the server told me the Diavola pizza and the gnocchi were the same price. After checking the menu, I saw there was actually a $10 difference. When I mentioned that, he asked if I wanted him to change the bill. Once I said yes, he immediately became visibly upset. For me, it wasn't even about the money -- it was the dishonesty and attitude that left a bad impression. Throughout the rest of the evening, he continued being warm and attentive to the other tables around us, thanking them for their tips. Despite the experience, I still tipped 20%, and the server never acknowledged it or said thank you. He simply picked up the check and walked away. I gave them two stars to be kind as the drink was great and my mom enjoyed her salad. Unfortunately, I won't be returning. The gnocchi was mediocre, and the service left an even worse impression than the food.

Meanwhile I noticed there was another man who could've offered some assistance. My friend and I pointed to the slices of pizza we wanted. I selected the tomato pizza and my friend picked the eggplant. The man on the phone picked the pizza slices with his bare hand and popped them in the oven. What's even worse, this is a cash only establishment, of course he was the one to handle the cash barehanded, while the entire time on the phone. He did use gloves and parchment paper as he removed our slices from the oven. I was a bit turned off by the lack of sanitation and professionalism. I was a bit hesitant about eating this pizza, but I was hungry. This slice was thin and a generous size. It was filled with plenty of mozzarella and tomato slices. My friend's was equally tasty with eggplant and mozzarella. If it weren't for the observations made above, this would have easily been a five star review.
