This spot has been our COVID takeout go-to for when we want a special occasion meal (graduation, birthday, or sometimes just because!) Our favorites are the eggplant parmesan balls to start and the spinach gnocchi as an entree. The spinach gnocchi are light and fluffy and the tomato sauce is light and fresh with real cherry tomatoes. We also have tried and really enjoyed the grilled artichokes, the brussel sprouts, and the paccheri with vodka sauce. Before the pandemic I'd only been here once with a friend and it was very cute and intimate inside. Hope to be back once this all clears up and until then, we'll continue ordering in for a delicious, special meal. read more

With a little tweaking this is a five star establishment. Was initially turned off by the toasted bread served with olive oil and balsamic vinegar. Typically, bread is served toasted when the bread is a bit old. Such was the case here. Salads were average and artichoke appetizer was a bit too greasy. Pastas were excellent and know they have whole wheat and gluten free pasta, too. Gnocchi was delicious but the star was the pasta with short ribs. Fish was a bit overcooked. Chicken dishes were perfectly prepared. Wine list is decent but overpriced. Service was excellent. With better bread, a bit more to salads and better fish prep this would be 5 stars. I love the short rib pasta, the bolognese, the duck ragú pappardelle pasta, the bread is also very nice and the tiramisu & cannolli. This was an amazing night - truly from the beginning to the end. 83 1/2, a restaurant rightly situated on 83rd street, between 1st and 2nd avenue, seats about ~30 people and serves some very very delicious creative classic Italian dishes. The menu has a nice selection of salads, appetizers, entrees, pastas while the wine and cocktail list is equally extensive. We were promptly seated with a reservation at 9PM. The night started with warm and nicely toasted house bread and good quality olive oil and vinegar. We ordered Queen Bee (St. Germain, pineapple juice, lime juice and prosecco) and Italian Cosmo. The drinks were both delicious, with the prior on the sweeter side and the latter strong side. And no, I confirmed that the bartender is not a Beyonce fan, at least not the one who made my drink. For appetizer, we got Calamaretti in Padella (calamari) and Cavoletti di Bruxelles (Brussels sprouts). The calamaris were crispy and nicely salted, with a lemon wedge and marinara sauce. Not the best I've had but not bad either. The true star of the show was the Brussels sprouts. They were stirred fried with garlic oil and walnut and topped off with slices of parmesan. They were so bad yet so good. Crispy and oily, yet so addictive we couldn't stop stuffing our faces with these little nuggets. Moving on to entrée, we opted for the Trofie al Ragu di Manzo (chianti braised short ribs pasta) and Grilled Chicken special recommended by the waiter. The trofie was perfectly al dente while the short rib, braised with so much flavor. I joked during the night that this was the first time where the amount of meat exceeded the pasta. The chicken was grilled to perfection, slightly charred on the outside but so moist on the inside. A side of veggies (carrots, Brussels sprouts) complemented the dish by added more crunch to my taste buds. After a tough mental battle, we both decided that the Trofie stole the show, although the chicken was also very very good. Lastly, we ended the night with the much recommended Nutella crème brulee/tiramsu and espresso/cappuccino. Yes, dessert was quite good but I was so overwhelmed by the whole experience that everything tasted fantastic to me. 83 1/2 serves delicious Italian food. I was blown away by the amazing service, the size of the kitchen (only 2 people?!) and mostly the amazing food. We got really really lucky with our choices and hope to return again to try more items on the menu. I walked away with a food coma that only comes about once every few months. read more

When you look up "neighborhood gem" in the dictionary, this is it! We have been going for a few years now, and they never disappoint. We have been out of town due to Covid the past 2+ months and we ordered for delivery the minute we got back into town. Anything artichoke - great! Pounded breaded veal chop - outstanding! Anything pasta (but braised short ribs is a favorite) - terrific. Even their delivery has the same terrific quality as dining in the restaurant, but this will be the first place we will go to when inside dining is allowed in NYC. This place is what NYC nights are made of! A dear friend suggested we meet up here for dinner and drinks, and we were pleasantly surprised with everything 83 1/2 had to offer. The seating is cozy and intimate, dim lights, and great service that is just attentive enough. We snagged a corner seat by the window. We wanted to try everything on the menu, but settled on the truffle ravioli and wild boar pappardelle. Since we wanted to try each other's orders, they offered to give us a half plating of each entree, which was perfect! You can't beat fresh pasta and great ingredients. We ended our night with cannoli and complimentary almond biscotti. Highly recommend checking this place out! read more

I tried out this place because of how cool it looked from the outside. Very simple and clean design that's easy on the eyes. On the inside of the restaurant, there is an open kitchen area in the back of the restaurant. As for food, the restaurant prides itself in their branzino. I thought their beet salad was really good-- the sweetness of the candied walnuts complemented the bitterness of the beet very well. I think the pricing of the restaurant is a bit too high. 83 1/2 has to compete with all the other Italian restaurants in the Upper East Side, but it is just average tasting and slightly overpriced. read more

Had never dined here but on the recommendation of a friend, planned a bday dinner for my 91 year Mom and 7 of her friends (all much younger than her!) to sit outside rain or shine! I worked with Daniel prior to the dinner and he had some great suggestions on how to plan the meal. I thought maybe all appetizers served family style, let each lady pick her own main course, get some sides family style and do dessert the same. Daniel said he would make each lady an appetizer plate with 3 different samples of their best selling starters. Went with his suggestion - perfect and deelish. If you're interested - sauteed baby artichoke hearts, vegetarian eggplant parmesan ball with melted burrata and crispy brussels sprouts. To round out the table a couple of sides of caesar salad. Mains were ordered individually and everyone enjoyed and most had leftovers. I had the branzino en crusta which actually was crispy with sauteed spinach. Thoroughly enjoyed. We went with a couple of sides of the roasted fingerling potatoes which were addictive. For dessert they made up 3 plates of samples of carrot cake, cheese cake, tartufo and chocolate cake. All in all service was terrific, friendly and not intrusive. Tho they were closing up for the night, they never made us feel like they wanted us to leave. Daniel was extremely helpful and reachable whenever I had a question. Would definitely recommend and looking forward to going back with Mom for an enjoyable dinner and just the two of us. It has since been closed and re-opened as a completely different restaurant, with a different concept, cuisine, and chef. Ryan Skeen always develops a good menu, so I had pretty high expectations, and I was not disappointed. The octopus and kale salad was fantastic. The texture on the octopus was perfect and the whole salad was precisely balanced in terms of the textures and the dressing A+. The pigs ear salad was a little bit of a disappointment, but having had Ryan's pigs ear salad at other places, I am going to guess that this was really an anomaly. The pigs ear itself was not salty or crispy enough, and the result was that the whole salad was a little underseasoned. My companion had the pappardelle with rabbit and it was a lovely dish - much lighter and more delicate than you would expect with a ragu. I had the bucatini with uni. it was very good. in direct contrast with the bucatini, it was much heartier than i expected it to be. the sepia was much more subtle than usual - it was more of an umami seasoning than a main flavor. i felt that there could have been some more sea urchin on there....but to be fair, i think i ALWAYS feel that way. I was also really impressed with the wine list. 83 1/2 has a lot of excellent options that are VERY economically priced. The staff was extremely gracious, friendly, and helpful. The meal came out at a great pace even though the restaurant was almost completely full. No small feat with a teeny kitchen that size. To all the reviewers that had an issue with the chef....I'm sorry but it's no one else's fault if you go to a restaurant and don't know anything about the chef. I think it is hilarious that he is in a restaurant with an open kitchen. And anyone that goes to a restaurant where Ryan Skeen is cooking in an open kitchen and has a problem with a tantrum might as well go to a sushi restaurant and complain that most of the food is raw. Adding the fact that this is the first few weeks of being open.....to be honest I feel a little cheated that I didn't get to see any tantrums while I was there. some of the best Italian on the UES! took my parents here for dinner the other night and we got the eggplant parm to start thanks to a recommendation from our waiter - a MUST for the table because it's melt in your mouth good. all of us ordered pastas (all of which were homemade and cooked perfectly al dente!) I loved the linguine special with shrimp, scallops, and lobster, and the linguine vongole and fettuccine bolognese I tasted were really good too. Foodie-worthy; would do well on "chopped" show. Unusual dishes like lobster potato salad appetizer and cubed swordfish with excellent unusual light sauce. Very attentive and well-informed waiters help that know about the food and wine. Open window to kitchen, so you can watch cooking if you want. Walls nicely decorated. Main complaints: 1) portions too small, and appetizers a little expensive, and 2)diner-type seats; really need replacing with nicer fabric for booths and chairs. Worth a visit, though. My wife and I won't be going back here. Over-priced, watered down cocktails. Not allowed to order an appetizer to eat with your cocktail. Got our order wrong and brought the wrong salad, no big deal we ate it anyway but it had zero flavor or seasoning, not even salt (tri color = a sliced small ball of flavorless mozzarella, sliced avocado and a sliced tomato, literally from the supermarket around the corner to your plate). Our pasta entree was pretty good, but the veal was just so so. Ordered a bottle of house rose (they could have mentioned it'd be 60 dollars). The host kept referring to my wife as "sweetie" and "darling" which was off putting, not because he was old fashioned/classy but because he was kind of sleazy. read more

what happens when you find a long hair in your Pasta? it was embedded in the pasta - not on top - the waiter should apologize and take it back !!- well in the case of last night - the waiter said "well its not my hair" He told the manager and the waiter said the manager wanted to see the hair - WHO would save it!!! I then went to find the manager who was the rudest most arrogant man - He said the same thing that noone has long hair!!! I was with 3 friends and told him we were all in the neighborhood and would not come back - he shrugged his shoulders and said ok!! When we got the bill - the pasta was still on the bill - the waiter was annoyed but took it off - Food was average - would not recommend and will never go back! read more

Great food and service, quiet family-friendly restaurant with some of the best Italian in the UES. For appetizers we had the pear salad and octopus salad. Pear salad was delicious and didn't skimp on the pear which was nice, and the octopus salad was one of the best I've had in the city. octopus was thinly sliced and perfect. For entrees the pasta with duck ragu is a go-to and delicious. I also tried the trofie pasta (beef ragu sauce) but would definitely recommend the pappardelle noodle over the trofie! For dessert, try the creme brûlée- the topping was perfect and the custard wasn't too cold. We also tried the affogoto for dessert but didn't love it, there was too much espresso. I'm not sure how I haven't heard of this place, as it took a year on the UES to find it. The pasta was legit. I had the paccheri with vodka sauce and it was glorious. The rest of our group of six seemed extremely happy with their pasta choices as well. Really the only miss was the decision to add vanilla to the kale salad...it tasted like they had tossed the salad in vanilla coke to me. That said, I would say the taste was 50/50 liked-disliked at the table. I plan on going back a bunch of times. read more

I came here for brunch with 3 other people and we were very happy with the food. The place is small but they somehow manage to fit in enough seating for probably 30 people. The service was *painfully* slow, but everyone was nice and we weren't in a hurry on a Saturday afternoon so I can't really complain. I got the pancetta alla benedict and it was really scrump-didly-dumptious! The hollandaise sauce was so buttery and delicious. I'm normally not a huge fan of polenta but the polenta hash was awesome! The only downside of this place was the drinks. We all ordered bellinis which turned out to be really sour and gross so that was definitely a disappointment. In retrospect, I'm now wondering if the bottle of prosecco they used had gone bad. Overall though, the food was great and I wouldn't mind coming back. read more

Went here after seeing a date night option on HowAboutWe.com (also recommended). In short, an excellent culinary experience for a great value. We had a four course meal with wines provided by the sommelier to match each course for $60pp. Can't beat that anywhere in NYC. And they also do take out which was surprising from a place like this. We sat at the tasting table which sits right up against the kitchen where you can watch the chef prepare meals for you and the rest of the diners. Really pleasant experience both watching the chef cook and talk to us as well. We were served modern Italian dishes like warm bruschetta, sundried tomato risotto, spinach tagliatelle, and seared duck breast over polenta (the best I've ever had), topped off with a decadent chocolate mousse for dinner. Just an all around excellent experience and I will definitely look to go back. Well worth the experience even without the special date package. read more

Wow I was really surprised, I have been finding good restaurants that are actually authentic Italian and you don't have to file bankruptcy when the bill arrives. On a Wed night we had reservations it was quiet but began to fill up as we were leaving. The waitress was nice, served the old fashioned bread like my father used to get from Arthur Ave the one that is baked in a hot oven with a great crust, wow I miss that bread! good olive oil and balsamic for dipping.. We shared a tri colored salad. To hear from my date the food was excellent was a shock, he is not a foodie but I think we found a favorite as he wants to make reservations for us with another couple this week end, that's a good sign. I had Chilean Sea bass the piece was so huge I have lunch for tomorrow in my fridge, excellent just couldn't eat it all. My b/f had his usual spaghetti with meatballs but homemade spaghetti and I doubt if he would know a frozen pizza from the real deal yet he said wow this is different! Its really good, duhh. I could see the sauce was homemade, tasted it and it was delicious but I am used to Southern Italian. . We shared a fruit salad with gelato and most of their their desserts are home made. To sum up our experience its nice to go to an Italian restaurant and have real Italians waiting on you and in the kitchen cooking. We are not prejudice well maybe a bit of a preference lol!. Obviously we are not big eaters and me with my allergies they took everything into consideration and we will definitely be back. Nice room, nice people good food and fair prices, I don't think anything on the menu would be bad, see the difference is once you trust a restaurant you can just go there and know you will be taken good care of. Ate dinner here on New Years Eve and we had a blast! The food was spectacular. We ordered two entres and we planned to share each entre. The chef was kind enough to split each entre and put it on two separate plates. We ordered lentils soup and calamari for appetizers. The soup was very yummy lots of flavors. The calamari was also very good, came prepared with marinara sauce. I tried a red Malbec wine that was great. The entres we ordered included the lamb chops and a pasta with shredded beef, it was rich with flavors very tender, cooked to perfection. For desert we ordered the flan and lava cake, which were a perfect blend. The restaurant is small but can seat quiet a few guests. The restrooms were clean. The lighting inside the restaurant is dim and very intimates. The food is fabulous. Our waiter was very knowledgeable about The menu, very efficient and attentive. We had a spectacular evening at this restaurant, I'd recommend this as a must try to anyone in the city! read more

I'd recommend getting here on the earlier side or make a reservation because the dining room is smaller than you might think. They have a really nice and modern decor. They also have a nice list of Italian wines, which I won't comment on only because I am not super knowledgable about wines specifically but I do know they have some Italian options that are really different and unique. Hence, this review is for the food. 3.5 star, rounding up because the service was really nice- on point, helpful with recommendations, knowledgable, but not overbearing 83 1/2 have been around for a year plus but recently closed and reopened with a revamped menu. Bf and I had the: -burrata. I love burrata and this had a really nice texture... the balsamic was less potent than others I've had, and I wish the tomatoes were a bit... more fruity? But overall a good dish. -the polipo - grilled octopus. Lovely! And perfectly cooked in a nice, flavorful tomato ragu with asparagus. Octopus is easy to overcook and this was really nicely charred and not one bit chewy. Do get this. - the duck papparadelle. All their pastas are made in house, which is a must to compete in NY's Italian scene... but this was our least favorite dish. It really, really lacked flavor. The pasta was thinly shaved but tasted bland because the ragu didn't taste like much.. barely there tomato sauce, and the duck could have been way more braised and beaten in an actual ragu. It was just sort of shredded in clumps. I would have thought they would have done a creamy ragu here... in fairness, our server recommended the gnocchi so maybe you should get that. -the branzino. People know 83 1/2 is known for this dish - it's really unique and takes a good deal of culinary creativity. It's a zucchini crusted seared branzino, on a bed of really nice spinach and super thinly grilled asparagus (yum). You need to be creative with branzino because it's otherwise bland. - for dessert, we had the tiramisu. This was another disappointment of the evening- really nice mascarpone but overall it was really dry (it was a huge portion though)- they should have soaked it with more coffee liquor A nice neighborhood spot. read more

Portions are large. We started with the cheese and meat plate. They gave us at least a half pound of cheese. The cheeses were good - manchego and Brie, which were good, but it was odd that we didn't get any Italian cheese. It is an Italian restaurant after all. They serve every table toasted bread with olive oil and a red pepper pesto, which is good. We had the pappardelle with lamb ragu and red snapper special. The red snapper was really good. The pappardelle was a bit overcooked and the lamb was shredded/pulled as opposed to ground. It would have been better if the pasta was cooked al dente. We had a super Tuscan wine with our meal. For $42 it was a decent wine. Overall, I'd recommend trying it. We'll probably give it another shot as it just seems like it's a new restaurant working out some kinks. read more

My wife and I dined here on Saturday night, coming in around 8pm. I had heard good tihngs from reviews around the web and was excited to try it out. They were very accommodating with our son who was in a stroller, which was a huge relief. That said, we were a little surprised how empty it was on a Saturday night. Bread and butter tasty - bread in particular with some kind of pepper aioli. Was delicious. For starters I had the small plates (chose the risotto fritters, lamb, and salt cod fritters). The risotto balls and lamb were excellent, the salted cod was pretty good but not quite as good. My wife got the Insalata Misto which she enjoyed. Then we got the pasta and things started to slip up a bit. We ordered the tagliatelle to split, and didn't enjoy it much. There were very few clams, which didn't add any real flavor to the dish. The guanciale had a bitter flavor and a very rubbery texture, and overall the flavor just didn't come together well. This was a disappointment. Then the entrees. Do you remember when you were a kid, and you would mix too many colors of paint together, and it would just end up being brown? That's kind of how we felt about these entrees. They were edible, but there were just so many flavors in there that didn't work together, and the result was this sort of disorganized, jumbled mess. I had the charred lamb dish that had a weird layer of fat on top and no char. When I removed the jelly-like fat layer, I had to remove all of the spices that were on it, leaving me it bland. My wife had the special (I can't remember what it was) but we both were not particularly impressed. Overall, the appetizers were pretty good, the service was good+, and they were helpful with our son - considering that we're going an extra star than what it probably would have gotten for the food alone. Came here last Friday night after wanting to get some Italian food in the neighborhood. Had read the good and the bad, mostly the bad but still came knowing they had made some efforts to make the place better. The restaurant reminded me of a small diner, with only about 15 tables, all very close to one another. Lighting in the place was quite bright and just did not give it any kind of cozy ambiance. As for the food I would say that overall it was good. We ordered two pastas and an entree special. The duck pasta was ok but the more bites taken the more you realized how bland the flavors were. The rolled Gnocchi with spinach in butter and sage was very flavorful. We also tried the Mahi Mahi fish special which was also very good, I wish this was on the regular menu. Wine selection was small and a. It pricey per glass. Service, which was a major concern with other reviewers was good. We didn't have to wait to be seated or to get our drink orders in. This is a solid neighborhood Italian restaurant with a pleasant atmosphere and nice service. We had the chicken meatballs dish along with the Tagliatelle. The pasta was homemade and very good, but both dishes lacked flavor. We also split a salad to start with was very good. This is a reasonable priced Italian restaurant that I would recommend if you are in the area and want something convenient and comfortable.
