Got the Pho with Fillet and Brisket, and a Thai tea. Co worker got the Pho w Meatballs and Fillet. Bowls were deep but not huge. The broth was ok, I've had better. The beef was tender and tasty. Picked up a spring roll with Shrimp and Pork for the wife. She loved it! My biggest gripe is that I asked for separate checks so we could pay separately, the guy says ok then I swiped my card and when I looked it was more than I anticipated... so I asked if the check was all together and the guys says yeah... we say we asked for separate checks and he shrugged his shoulders and said sorry... no Fs given lol. No problem... probably won't tip 20% next time or come back because there are so many Pho places to go to. The place used to be Bon Chons, the decor was nice, the restaurant was clean.... This is a hidden gem a block from Shattuck. Clean, modern interior. The pho broth was flavorful and they were generous with the herbs, limes slices. Got the brisket and tendon and decent amount of meat. The banh mi was crusty and good. I wish they used a slightly better type of bread but would still order it again. Solid beef pho -- broth is flavorful, meat is tender, and has been consistent across the several times I've been there. Staff have been friendly and willing to accommodate. Prices seem a little high, but maybe that's just restaurants in Berkeley. The restaurant space is nice to sit in and big windows, so lots of natural light. Edit: 4 to 3 stars I went for lunch today and the broth was almost completely flavorless! Don't know why there's so much variation; figure you'd taste it before you serve it? I really did used to love this place and even brought my boyfriend here, but we spotted a rat going in and out of the kitchen and when we told the waitress she said she knows it is a problem that has been happening for a while and the manager doesn't want to do anything about it. Immediately after I felt so sick and couldn't eat after and when I asked to be compensated for the meal, they only offered 15% off of the meal and told us they would report it to the health division themselves, which we know is a total lie. I am telling all my friends and family who used to love this place to never come back. Horrible service and I feel super gross that they couldn't at least compensate my meal KNOWING a rat was most likely by it. read more

Came on a Friday night and it was busy. Super slow service due to being understaffed. There were two waiters and one of them was training so she couldn't take orders or help with the bill. All she did was make drinks and fill up waters, but she did a terrible job and would forget everyone's orders / move very slowly. Tables were constantly flagging her about their drinks. There were two other workers who were only working on to go orders from delivery apps. Maybe they should turn off those apps and help in store customers when it's busy. Essentially, there were 10+ tables full of people and only one functioning waiter. I ordered the house pho with brisket and beef ball. The soup was bland and the noodles were stuck together. My friend ordered the fresh spring rolls with shrimp and they gave us veggie egg rolls... He sucked it up and didn't say anything since service was so slow and the restaurant was busy. The egg rolls were definitely undercooked and tasted raw. The table behind us was waiting for so long, they walked out before getting their food. Dirty tables when we sat down and had to flag the wait staff to clean. Terrible experience and would not come back. Be ready to wait a while for mediocre viet food. read more

Couldn't even see the pate, like 2 pieces of meat, and a disproportionate amount of shredded daikon that tasted quite off. Actually, all the fillings tasted pretty off and flavorless. I came here on a Sunday afternoon and it was super empty :( My sister and I split a banh mi thit nuong, a bún thit nuong and a pineapple smoothie. The pineapple smoothie is a MUST try. It tastes like dole whip and it was honestly the best smoothie I've ever had. 10/10 would come again just for the smoothie. The vermicelli bowl was yummy, the fish sauce dressing was delicious but it was lacking in meat. The banh mi was good but not the best I've ever had. Service was nice and efficient. read more

A friend of mine and I came by for an after-concert meal. I loved how they were open late and easy to get to from the Greek Theatre. We both got the chicken pho. I came in here on a Sunday at lunch to get some bánh mì to go. The employees were really nice, and offered a table and water to us while we waited. I ordered the chicken bánh mì with thai sauce ($9) with a vietnamese coffee ($6.5). The food took a little bit of a wait, but this could be avoided by calling an order on the phone or through online order. The banh mi was absolutely delicious, I couldn't really describe the flavor of the thai sauce other than how it's described on their menu but it paired with the chicken perfectly. Chicken was not dry at all despite being white meat. The bread was fresh, crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. I hate getting a banh mi where you have to fight to rip and chew the bread because it's stale. The restaurant was clean and inviting, and the owner seemed super friendly. My family and I came on their grand opening day. Large open space with lots of natural lighting and cute indoor plants! We parked elsewhere but I heard there's a parking lot on the same side somewhere behind the restaurant (free on weekends). Food: HIGHLY RECOMMEND their pho and egg rolls 2 ways! The pho broth was exceptional and definitely star of the show. It was perfectly seasoned and had a deep bone flavor. You can tell the beef bones were cooked over many hours and given love with the right amount of spices and aromatics. No need to add hoisin! Perfect for sick/hangover days, or just when the craving hits. I was impressed and appreciative that they have egg rolls from both regions of Vietnam. I've never been to a viet restaurant which has both! The south egg rolls are what I'm used to, which most restaurants make. The wrap was thin and crispy, filling was soft and the taro flavor really comes through. The north egg rolls were more meaty with earthy flavors of 3 different mushrooms and a different kind of wrapping. Both were served with different kinds of fish sauce according to that region. They were not skimpy on filling! We also had their bun cha ha noi. Perfect portion and everything mingles in that bowl of fish sauce. I could drink the entire thing! I had their grilled pork banh mi with the hong kong sauce that glosses over the meat. Also added liver pate. Their banh mi butter is made in-house. Yum! I'm a sauce gal so I think they could use a little more sauce and pickled veggies. Their grilled pork and egg roll is part of their small plates, which was appropriately sized. Drinks: ANYTHING COFFEE HERE! I promise you won't regret it. Also looove their differently colored phin filters. We originally started with a regular Vietnamese coffee and a salted cream coffee. The rest of my family ended up getting more after trying ours, in addition to a coconut coffee. The regular viet coffee is strong and fragrant. Perfect for long days ahead. Salted cream coffee was sooo soft and creamy, perfect balance between salty and sweet. The taste is similar to a melted version of salted caramel and coffee ice cream. I can eat spoonfuls of just that! I believe they import their coffee from Vietnam that farms robusta beans, which is less sour and bitter than the typical arabica we see here in the states. I really wanted to like this place. There is a dearth of good Vietnamese places in Berkeley (the only current good place is the sandwich shop Bánh Mì & Rolls; before we also had my favorite Heavenly food truck as well), so when I saw reviews that it had Northern Vietnamese items on the menu, I was super excited to try. The only other place in East Bay I know with Northern Vietnamese cuisine on the menu is Mâm Hà Nội in Oakland and imo it really sets the standard for Northern Vietnamese food in the Bay. I ordered the following: 1) Cà phê kem muối (salted cream coffee) 2) Cà phê cốt dừa (coconut coffee) 3) Phở thập cẩm vs trứng (pho combo with egg) 4) Nem rán (Northern style fried spring rolls) 5) Bún chả (HN style vermicelli with beef patties) Let's start with the coffee. I wasn't expecting Đà Lạt or Buôn Mê level coffee, but the coffee drinks were some of the dullest and most flavorless I've had, and this includes white-run establishments in America, Starbucks, and the cheap watered down joints in Sài Gòn. I was searching for any hint of coffee in my drinks. To be fair, the staff in charge of making drinks weren't Vietnamese and probably don't know to make it strong to my tastes, so I can cut them some slack. Nem rán filling was okay, nothing special, but okay. The bánh tráng was chewy and not crispy all the way through. Phở was...disappointing. I did get prior confirmation from the waiter that this was not true Northern style phở, but wanted to try it anyways with the added egg (eating egg with pho is a Northern thing). The broth was dull and flavorless, the meats were bland and overcooked (except for the meatballs, those were decent), the phở was phở khô (dry thin noodles) and not phở tươi (the wide fresh noodles) which is commonly associated with Northern style. This is a below average Việt Kiều style phở (on the same level as K&K), which I'm not really a fan of in the first place (being a Central Vietnamese person I don't enjoy phở that much). And then there was the bún chả. Probably the worst bún chả I've ever had. The broth tasted like nước lèo. The thịt ba chỉ (pork belly) was just fat, no meat. And the patties were flavorless. Maybe it was a bad day, maybe my standards might be too high as a Vietnamese person, but this was a truly disappointing experience. I hope the typical Southern stuff on the menu tastes better; otherwise I can't in good conscience recommend this place. read more

I came here for lunch with my bf and cousin during soft opening. Owners/staff are sooo welcoming, friendly, knowledgable, and you can tell they are passionate!! I ordered a cold cut banh mi sandwich. It had a nice amount of meat, one of things that surprised me was that the pickled veggies were sweet instead of the usual sour that i'm used to- but that might be because of the vietnamese sauce i picked, the owner/manager(?) recommended to pair that sauce with the grilled meat sandwich which i will try next time. It was a little dry but overall a decent sandwich! My 2 companions both had the combo beef pho with rib. I had a small taste and the broth was light but good. The rib($5) was Huge! It was lightly salted. I don't think they use any msg which is nice. I was told their chef came from vietnam. I don't really know anything about vietnamese food but the menu seems authentic, they even have two different kind of egg rolls (north and south style) The owners were very knowledgable and was happy to share interesting little tidbits! Their coffee is Amazing!!! We got the salted cream coffee and it's one of the best coffee i ever had!! It kinda tastes like a coffee milk shake. Apparently it's all the rage in Vietnam right now xD and i can see why! Seriously sooo good! We were told that they have a relative in vietnam that owns their own coffee bean farm so they get their beans directly from them. You can Really tell that this is some good coffee. Food: we ordered the grilled beef sandwich with Hong Kong sauce. It was pleasantly different compared to the usual Banh mi. The beef was soft and had a perfect chew to it. The sauce is slightly sweet and buttery. They have 3 different kinds of meat and 4 sauces to choose from. I will definitely try other combinations in the next visit. We also had spring rolls and Bun Cha (you know the kind Obama had when he ate with Anthony Bourdain in Vietnam). The Bun Cha was so good. It's a rare find because not many Vietnamese restaurants offer it. Service: we came during soft opening and the staff took their time to explain different Banh mi options and made recommendations. The owners were super nice. They made me a vegan tofu & mushroom noodle salad (bun); pictured. IT WAS DELICIOUS. Think they should def. add it to their menu and make a tofu & mushroom banh mi, as well. My family thoroughly enjoyed their food & drinks. Keep in mind that the soups are BIG. i got a regular beef pho and my girlfriend got a bone marrow soup and they gave her this enormous bowl with a big bone in the middle. The first time I came for dine in, there was only one other table and I waited forever for my pho to come out. When it finally came out, they took it back a minute later and said they gave me the wrong item. This was after I put my chopsticks in and mixed around already. When I finally got my new pho the soup was all milky-ish color and not good. So no doubt it was a bad experience. Decided to give them another chance today since Saigon Express is closed. Regretted my decision. They're so slow, even when there's no one in the store except me waiting for my pickup order. Waited more than 25min for just a shrimp roll. Came back home to find out some of the shrimp in my roll was partly clear and translucent, not sure if it's completely cooked or not since I've never seen shrimp like this before in shrimp roll. Called the restaurant to ask but their phone doesn't work. So tossed the entire order away and asked for a full refund of 13ish dollars from DoorDash. But since I used my monthly credit toward this order, that part wasn't refundable. So wasted 25min, still hungry with no food, and lost $5 of my monthly DoorDash credit.
