A small quiet new restaurant on a very busy corner of the business district of Arcadia. This noodle house has a lot of competition in the area, and I mean a LOT. In fact, there's a fairly prominent noodle house in the same plaza, but I decided to give this place a shot anyway. To my surprise, the food is very authentic, so much so that the waitress barely spoke english! The food wasn't as heavily flavored as some places like Sinbala, but resembled more of a home-cooked style meal. Price are reasonable, and their dumplings have a very thin skin, which was fantastic. The soup was very tasty and the noodles (same type used for both dishes) was the perfect consistency. I took a break during my shift, and decided to stop by this place for a quick bite. Upon arrival, I was greeted by one of the staff members at the counter. She handed me a menu and, offered me a seat anywhere I wanted. It was at this time, that I glanced at the menu, and ordered a bowl of Beef Noodle Soup, and a side order of Wheat Gluten. After a short wait, I was served the Wheat Gluten. At first bite, I was greeted with undertones of bread, as the texture had a certain chew to it. The taste was very close to that of Bean Curd, or Tofu. There was also, Sriracha, Soy Sauce, Black Vinegar, and Chili Oil. After finishing the Wheat Gluten, I was served with the Beef Noodle Soup. The first thing I did was, sip some of the broth, then taste the noodles. The Beef, and Tendons were cooked to perfection! Oh man, was it good! What they give you here is a truly rich broth, and tasty meaty morsels! The bf and I came here for lunch and ONLY ONE word would describe everything: Food: Horrible BF got pho or 'beef noodle soup', and it looked more like beef stew. It didn't even taste like it. It came with veggies and assorted items, that generally doesn't count in pho. ?? So, 88's new style of pho? I got won tons, and you can taste the instant noodle flavor mix in their soup base. My won tons were still stick together, as if they were just pulled out of the freezer and casually cooked it. Service: Horrible Got seated right away BUT it took them awhile to give us the menu and it took them a LONGER while to take our order. However, food was service, instantly, like mentioned earlier, my won ton tasted very instant as well. First of all let me just say, having your friends and relatives pump you up on yelp (allegedly) with a series of five-star ratings is just not a very smart way to start your business. I can see why you would want to do that, but eventually the truth is going to come out, and that is just the beauty of yelp. Coming from Taiwan, beef noodle soup has a special place in my heart. I'm the kind of person that would seek out hole-in-the-wall places just to try their beef noodle. Places like "Lin Dong Fung" in Taipei is one of my all-time favorites. Los Angeles has been missing a good beef noodle place for a long time, and 88, unfortunately, is not one either. [Location] 88 is small, and sits in the middle of the shopping plaza that also hosts Liangs Village Cuisine and 101 Noodle Express, right on Baldwin avenue in Arcadia, across from JJ Bakery and DTF dumplings. [Service] On this night that we visited, the restaurant was not busy, and we were greeted and seated promptly by a young lady who spoke perfect English but apparently not Mandarin, rare for a Chinese restaurant in this area of LA. As it turned out, it looked as if the parents and an older lady were running the kitchen, all communicating in Mandarin, and the English speaking young lady was charged with the house duties. [Food] When you see Tomato Basil Angel Hair on the same menu with Beef Noodles, that should be the first sign of trouble, but we stayed the course and each ordered a bowl of beef noodles. Food arrived quickly, however, the soup was lukewarm, the beef pieces were overcooked, and the vegetables floating in the soup, was cold. Noodles were cooked perfectly. Clearly, the beef had been stewed for too long and turned out flaky and a bit dry. Beef stock was not heated up properly, and the cold vegetable was because it had been pre-blanched and simply thrown in before service. The flavor was good enough, but it was just unfortunate that the lukewarm temperature simply killed the whole thing. 101, 88 and Liang's all have their take on the classic beef noodle, but of the three, I'll have to say 88 is the weakest. It is particularly disappointing when 88 actually has BEEF NOODLE right in its name. [Verdict] Beef noodles is not the hardest thing to prepare. Beef chunks slowly stewed in a soy sauce based spice/herb mixture, beef bone stock, freshly cooked noodles, and some vegetables to complement everything else. It is the perfect balance of this combination that separate the very best from the ordinary. 88 barely hits the mark for ordinary. Liang's and 101 are better by a little bit. A&J down south on Las Tunas probably has the best in this neighborhood, but the search for a better beef noodle soup in Los Angeles continues on. read more

I know a place is good when I'm craving the food I had from there a few days after eating it! One dish that really stood out to me is the Spicy Shrimp and Pork Wonton in Chili Oil. This is a side dish of wontons with no soup. It has just a hint of spice and is tasty with fresh-tasting shrimp. I also really enjoyed their Taiwanese Noodles with Pork. It has the right amount of pork and veggies. Very yummy. The hands-down winner for me, though, is the Tomato Basil Angel Hair. I think my stomach just growled while I was thinking of it! It's probably the most out of place dish on the menu, but I think it stands out the most. There's no meat on this, sorry carnivores, but I still think it's a dish worth trying! No wonder it tasted so good!! You won't regret getting the beef noodle soup, it's the least expensive noodle soup in town and the juiciest of them all. Another must have dish I tried that I really fell in love with is the spicy shrimp and pork wonton with chili oil. It doesn't taste spicy but has a bit of the spicy oil to give it some sauce. The shrimp tastes so fresh and juicy. They quality is definitely A+. It is better than all the spicy wontons I've tried in the sgv. This one gives you big shrimps with lots of pork just like a siomai but as a dumpling. It's really delicious!! I liked their lemon iced tea as well. It wasn't too sweet and it tasted very refreshing. It has the hong kong tea taste without the bitterness of the tea. It definitely was good on a hot day and it went so well with the food that we ate. Really complements the food that they serve here. They have pho soup here which I will definitely try next time. They have little cold appetizers such as the cabbage and cucumber and dried fish with bean curd that are really good as well. Goes well with the food and all for less than $2-3 depending on the dish. Such a steal!! Service was great and the prices are great. They got my order wrong! I specifically ordered Tomato with Scrambled Eggs Over Noodles (a Chinese dish) but somehow got Tomato Pasta when I got home. They charged me extra for a couple slices of meat. I tried eating it but it was incredibly SALTY - like they cooked the pasta in salt water and didn't drain. The pasta was just simple spaghetti that you can buy for 99¢ at any grocery store with some chopped up tomatoes. Can't believe I got charged for over $10 when this dish was so inedible. Another OK beef noodle soup place. The broth is not as flavorful as I would like...kinda watery :p I was so excited that they let you put tripe in it. Beef tripe is my FAVORITE in noodle soups, pho, and hot pot so whenever they give me the option, I take it! BUT this was not the yummy tripe with the thin layers hanging off (not sure how to describe it, but if you've had beef tripe at hot pot or dimsum or in pho, it's the good kind)! The tripe they had was the weird thick honeycomb-patterned one :( The wontons in chili oil are also not that good here :( Sigh....only Din Tai Fung can make this dish right... This little eatery sits in the middle of a parking lot next to a strip mall. It has around 7 tables with no frills wooden chairs and furniture they must have gotten for cheap from a wholesaler. A refrigerated display case next to the entrance shows off their cold marinated meats and another case displays canned sodas. I ordered the eponymous beef noodle. The hand made noodles and stewed beef worked well. I especially love that the beef included tendon pieces that were slow cooked to tender perfection. Some green onion, cilantro and spinach finish off this dish. The real test of a good beef noodle soup is the quality of the broth. Their's is a bit greasy for my taste given that there was a layer of oil floating over the broth. While it was not the best I ever had, it was tasty and filling. read more

This is one of the better noodle houses on this street. There are so many on Baldwin, but this one is our favorite. They do make some things BETTER here than other places: like the pickled cucumber! Their servings are very generous and allow for portions to take home- unlike places like Din Tai Fung who serve you food that is twice as expensive, for half the portion. BTW, they do have the spicy wontons in chili sauce here. :) So my final review? Twice the food, delicious food, at half the cost. The woman who served us here during our visit wasn't really on it as a server. She did not check up on us or refill our drinks- but she was constantly running around doing something, very busily (only us and one other party in that day). Between three adults we tried the beef noodle soup with clear broth (perfect to share with my toddler), regular beef noodle soup, wonton soup and tsa jiang noodles, and it seemed even better than the last time we were here. The regular beef noodle soup was just spicy enough, with a very complex, rich broth. I love that they give a good amount of spinach in the clear broth noodles too, other places don't give nearly enough veggies! All the noodles had a delicious chew to them, that homemade noodles have. The tsa jiang noodles were great too, a nice porky sauce on the dry noodle. Really wish they were closer to home, there are so many other dishes I want to try! read more

I appreciate another restaurant better, but it is out of my way, however, on a work day I frequent 88. They don't overcook the noodles (so that it is soggy) and I like the flavor of the soup. The staff there is very limited but they are very nice. The pot stickers I'd rate 7/10. They're not amazing but they're good. Not a fan of the spicy wontons though. I really prefer a thicker skin. They were fine, they just weren't for me. The cold plate was alright. I wouldn't get it again. I do like pig ear and eggs, the pork was flavorful, but the dried tofu was bland. 88 gets a lot of traffic for being new. They have a small diverse menu ranging from curry chicken rice to angel hair pasta. But the name of the place is Beef Noodle so I got the beef noodle. Along with the shredded chicken noodle, and the sauteed noodle with cabbage and pork. For appetizers, I got the wonton in chili oil, cucumber salad, the tofu and mushroom cold dish, and the mixed cold plate. I loved the shredded chicken noodle. This was served cold with a peanuty sauce, bean sprouts, carrots and cucumber. I've had this before, and their version is really good. The noodles have the right chew, and the flavors mix well. The beef noodle (taiwanese niu rou mien) is especially good. The broth was a deep brown color, promising a lot of flavor. And it delivered! There's plenty of chunks of beef in there as well. Of the appetizers, loved most the tofu and mushroom cold dish ($1.95). The greatest part, the food came out so quick. With three noodle dishes, we were in and out in less than 45 minutes.
