Someone suggested this place to me as they told me it is the best Taiwanese restaurant in the country. That's a pretty big claim so I had to give it a try. Food: Stinky tofu - Not too stinky. This one is extra crispy. In my point of view, it just tasted like a really well fried regular tofu cubes. I enjoyed it. Mushroom pork noodles - Soft noodles with a savory sauce. A very hearty bowl of noodles. Service: Owner is very friendly. He was playing some pretty heavy mandarin rap music from the 90s/00s. Very nostalgic. Environment: Parking is easy. Maybe I should have ordered just the stinky tofu, since that's what they should be good for, hence their store name. Instead, I actually went for the Pork Chop Rice and Popcorn Chicken. Talk about portion vs price. Honestly, $25 for a meal and $13 for a snack, that's way too much. Definitely pricier than some of the shop out there serving the same thing. Talk about taste vs price. I knew what the price was before I ordered them. I thought maybe...the taste of the food will equals the price. And oh boy, I actually think both the pork and chicken ain't as fresh. OVERPRICED for what they offered!!!! Tofu King been around for like forever. We thought it would be a good choice to enjoy some stinky tofu from here. Service was not the greatest. To make it worse, the portions for the prices were unreasonable ...very pricey for what we received. When we left, I looked at the photos from yelp. The portion for stinky tofu was very inconsistent. It seemed to be different throughout the years. Some people would get tons and some got 9 pieces or 10. We got 10 pieces, which was like more than $1 a piece. A small piece!!! Crazy!! Not like there was anything special about these stinky tofu. Skin was not that crispy. It was somewhat dry and filled with air. Onion pancakes were alright. However, very pricey for the portion as well. Same with the popcorn chicken/Taiwanese pepper chicken. The size of each piece was decent and we could actually taste the chicken. Tofu King does not live up to its name. I read one review saying this is the best Taiwanese food in LA. I disagree. 3/5 Taiwanese sausage rice was maybe the worst version I've had. While the rest of the components are good, the Taiwanese sausage looks like it's been sitting out and reheated several times. Instead of slicing the sausage after cooking the whole link, It looks like they cup all the sausages into slices and then stir fried it. The result is a dry and bland sausage that does not satisfy. The dark color is also off putting. 4/5 Squid thick soup was the best thing I ordered. Simple but delicious. At $16, it's quite expensive for a small bowl. 3/5 Combination plate. For $20 you get 1 egg, 1 beancurd square, and a bed of overcooked seaweed. Not tasty and definitely not a value. 2/5 Lastly the item that made me order delivery from Tofu King. The item that they should have perfected, given their name. This fried stinky tofu barely had any funk. It's was fried to the point of almost cardboard texture. A great mom-and-pop spot. The gentleman who helped me (I think he's the owner) was very friendly and helpful! I didn't know how to say the names of the dishes in Mandarin, so he patiently explained the dishes I was interested in. I got the mushroom sliced pork with ground pork rice and the stinky tofu to go. The pork rice was delicious and came with a tea egg. The stinky tofu came with kimchi, a flavorful sauce, and sambal oelek. I think because of my 45-minute drive home, the tofu got kinda hard, so next time I'll probably just order it if I'm eating there or not driving too far. I'd definitely like to come back to support the kind owners of this mom and pop restaurant! Small spot with a parking lot, Zelle and cash only. The server which I also presume is the owner is very nice. He seems so genuine and was very helpful with the menu. I can tell he has a lot of care for his food and customers. I heard they had the best stinky tofu in the area but I didn't think it was that great - at least the fried one. It was a bit hard and not very stinky so I wouldn't come here just for that. However we went back the next day to try the stinky tofu in the pots and it was delicious. Quiet, Cheap looking and doesn't seem to have a lot of staff working. I went during lunch on a weekday, there was no one besides the shop keeper. There were a few people who ordered takeout waiting for their orders. But the stanky tofu was bomb, definitely worthy of the name. Taiwanese stinky tofu is so hard to find here in america i think mainly due to the smell. Tofu king makes them perfectly! The kimchi that goes along with it is has the perfect amount of tang. The tofu is crispy on the outside yet fluffy on the inside. I will always make it a point to stop here and pick up stinky tofu when i make the drive down to socal. It is definitely worth the stop if you are craving authentic taiwanese food. I have also tried the pork rice and the pork fat perfectly coats every grain of rice. Food is great, but it cost quite a bit! They also only take cash or zelle. I think there's probably one cook in the back and one man who is the waiter and also preps the appetizer? So it can seem like a bit of a wait to get your food. If you're in a hurry, it might be best to call in and get the order as takeaway. Come to California for vacation, and we stayed in Monrovia. We normally go to San Gabriel for Taiwanese but we didnt want to travel that far, so we found this place in Arcadia. He asked us to wait outside and end up he brought out another smaller table and put the table for us, but when we walked in, he insisted us to wait outside and it's quite hot during that time and we have one elderly and 3 kids in the party. Anyway, we waited and went in when he called us, The menu seems extensive and they are famous for their stinky tofu, so we ordered that, a cold noodles, oyster pancakes, a minced pork rice and some pop corn chicken and veggies to share. The food came out quickly and it's tasty. The tofu had a nice texture and great with the sauces. I also love the sausages too; it has good flavor and texture especially with the garlic. The cold noodles are also very tasty and refreshing. My least favorite is the oyster pancakes...the texture was ok plus not many oysters. The owner end up becoming friendly. During summer, could be hot bc they didn't turn on the ac when we were there, but luckily it's still winter. No water provided, you either get their bottle water or drinks or bring in your own water. The popcorn chicken was over fried, and the fried pork chop tasted like pure lard. Service is near non existent, the owner looks annoyed that you would even dare to ask for something. Nothing good to say about this place. The lights were off and the door was open like a typical cheap Chinese restaurant. Portions were extremely small for the price. Water cup had some nasty stuff inside and they don't have ice. After I was done with my food, I noticed a large crack in the bowl that travels through the opposite side. I chose to take my family to this restaurant today to try it out after receiving the Tofu King menu via email from a coworker yesterday. My family was uneasy when they entered the restaurant due to the overpowering scent of fermented tofu. We placed our order for the following: Cold Noodle and Cold Dish; Taiwan Style Crispy Chicken Rice; Mushroom Sliced Pork Rice with Egg; Taiwan Style Crispy Mini Buns with Condensed Milk and Taiwan Style Rice Cake (include Peanut). I requested if we could have some ice water for us and the server informed us that this restaurant does not serve ice water and that you must purchase drinks if you would want to have something to drink. In the event that you choose to eat at this restaurant and would prefer not to purchase drinks from them, be sure to bring water or other drinks with you. The food is flavorless and bland here. I didn't even know that there's a Tofu King at the corner of Baldwin and Duarte behind IHop in Arcadia until today when I got stuck in traffic for 6 hours back from NorCal. I have to say it's legit and second best to the other Tofu King on Garfield by the 60 freeway across from the montebello golf course which was closed years ago. The mushroom sliced pork rice (actually not sliced but diced as it should be) was delicious and so is the stinky tofu although i would've loved it more if it's a little more moist (shanghainese style). Their food is way better than the other tofu king locations left in rowland heights and irvine in my opinion. Go support the owner who said they have been there for 14 years but business has been tough since covid and what follows under the past and current administration. It's hard for me to write this review. I'm giving two star with a heavy heart because it's not like used to be. They marked-up their price, yet the food quality is less flavorful. Tofu King gained popularity because it had the best Taiwanese stinky tofu in all of San Gabriel Valley. Their sticky tofu stood out because they were big pieces of fried square stinky tofu with their unique garlic flavor sauce luxuriously drizzled over the tofu. The mixture was a perfect balance of fried tofu with the wetness of the sweet, savory and spicy sauce. About 5 years ago, they switched to bite-size much smaller square shaped stinky tofu that you dip in their house-made sauce. I was very disappointed as that type of presentation and cooking was not as unique. It's basically fried tofu that you dip in a sauce which is very common and you can get it almost in every Taiwanese restaurant that serves sticky tofu or fried tofu. I still came today for their braised pork belly over rice as that's my daughter's favorite. When I don't have time to make it at home, I come here. Their food is authentically Taiwanese but the prices have become ridiculously high in the last 2 years. It's been a huge turn off for their past loyal Taiwanese clientele. Today, I also got their house made frozen Taiwanese pork meatballs to cook in soups at home. It's $17 per lb which came out to about $1 per one golf-size meatball. If you are in the mood for authentic Taiwanese food, I do recommend this place. This is my favorite local Taiwanese restaurant! The restaurant is located in the same plaza as USPS; there are decent amount of parking spaces in the plaza. The food is authentic Taiwanese and the menu is extensive. 5/5 Mushroom Sliced Pork Plate Tofu King makes the best braised pork rice. Both my son and I enjoy this comfort dish. I used to get the bowl, but I am glad they offer it as a combo plate now. It comes with the braised pork packaged in a small container, rice topped with corn and ground pork, stir-fried cabbage, and pao cai (pickled cabbage). The additional veggies makes the meal healthier and acidity from the pao cai balances the fattiness from the braised pork. The combo plate is also large enough for me to split with my son. 5/5 Stinky Tofu Their stinky tofu is authentic! You can smell the pungency of the deep fried fermented tofu when you walk inside the restaurant. They no longer offer the big tofu pieces, instead they are now in bite sizes. The stinky tofu comes with pao cai and garlic sauce. Make sure to add chili sauce! 5/5 House Special Beef Noodles If you like Taiwanese beef noodle soup, then you will enjoy the broth and toppings it comes with. But compare the style and service, the Arcadia one is not as hospitable as the another.
