I've tasted a few of the empanadas. The Jamaican empanada was my favorite. It was very flavorful and fresh. My least favorite was the chimichurri. The chimichurri taste was too strong. They have several menu options I plan to try. Their service is always fast

Came here for Futbol on the Block. Food was amazing and tons of people watching soccer!! Would definitely come back and is now my go to for empanadas and chicken!!

This place is black female owned so I was intrigued and hungry lol. The shop is nice and quaint with a good amount of seating. When I arrived the employees were nice and courteous, I pre ordered but wanted to add a dessert to my order and was helped by the owner, who helped me decide what dessert to treat myself to. Now down to the food I ordered three empanadas ( mushroom, chicken, and beef), plantain chips, and for dessert a caramel cookie covered in rich chocolate. The empanadas were all nicely sized, each covered in the a flaky pie crust like shell accompanied with this yummy chili like sauce. All were amazing, spiced and cooked with big flavors, the chips were so crispy with a hint of salt( you could tell they were fresh and made in house), lastly that cookie was so rich and deliciously indulgent. I was extremely pleased and so happy they have opened locally, I will be back and highly recommend

Julio's does something no other local empanada place does, they label their empanadas. It's a nice touch. Much appreciated, too. I had been wanting to try the and finally got the chance. I had the fugazetta, the mushroom and onion, and the chicken salsa verde. I also tried their pineapple basil fresca. To empanadas makes a perfect meal. I didn't really like my drink. Maybe a little too much basil for me. The empanadas were delicious, and just the perfect size. I really enjoyed my meal as a whole. I got lunch and a snack for later for under $20 bucks. The place is clean and bright. I wouldn't say the staff is friendly, but they were efficient. FYI - parking can be tricky. But that's ok. I still have a lot of flavors to try. This will probably be my number one empanada spot in Oakland Recommended.

I ordered from 9 Julio's Empanadas for an event for 40 alumni in the Bay Area. The reviews from the attendees were really positive. I ordered their farmers market salad, empanadas (vegetarian, meat and dessert), steak, plantain chips, and some other delicious dishes). The process was easy from placing the order to delivery. I was hosting this event and flying from Los Angeles in a space co-hosted in the Bay Area so I wanted great and delicious food but didn't want to worry about the food logistics. I wanted to worry about the event only. The food was fresh and sourced locally.

9Julio has catered our annual holiday party twice, and the empanadas are absolutely amazing. We usually order the Jamaican beef and the chicken salsa verde, and everything is delivered right before the party, hot and ready to serve. The chimichurri sauce the owners recommend is incredibly fresh and pairs perfectly with the chicken. They even prepared ingredient cards for our buffet, which was such a thoughtful touch. Our guests always rave about both the flavors and the presentation. Highly recommend!

Now if these aren't the best little empanadas that I ever did taste! 9 Julio most certainly knows how to do empanadas right. I've tried just about every empanada flavor on their menu, and every single one tastes fantastic! My personal faves are the spinach and cheese, Jamaican beef, and the humita. I like that they switch up the flavors every once in a while so that I can try something new and different (although it sometimes makes me miss my old faves). Erica is awesome! She is always holding down the fort and welcoming the clients. The Agua Frescas are dynamite and I looove the watermelon mint! Would highly, HIGHLY recommend that you give that a try because it's tasty. I've also fallen deeply in love so their gaucho chopped salad. It is so delicious! I typically add steak to it and make it a meal all on its' own. My staff and I order from here a few times a month, and I also pop by for lunch when I can to enjoy a sit down meal inside. They now have happy hour during the week and offer beer and wine. The interior space is bright and cozy. There's no dedicated parking lot, but I've always been able to find street parking (most times right in front of their storefront). They're located off of Claremont Ave but it can be easy to miss. They're right across the street from the Red Sea Ethiopian restaurant. So glad to have this yummy empanada spot nearby! Looking forward to trying some new empanada flavors and more entrees off of their menu soon.

9 Julio's Empanadas are on the smaller side, but really delicious. I have large hands, so they're just slightly larger than the palm of my hand. I enjoyed the Jamaican Beef and Chicken Rojo. I'd say that both were very good and I was glad that the nice woman at the counter recommended the Chicken Rojo, which she said was her favorite. All-Natural chicken, tomatoes, red bell peppers, onions, and guajillo chilies comprise the Chicken Rojo. Jamaican Beef has ground beef, onions, scallions, scotch bonnet peppers and curry. They have a rotating menu of empanadas. The Argentinian chimichurri sauce is great for dipping the empanadas. This is the gourmet end of the fast food scale. I guess the big question is whether they're better than Javi's (with two locations). While there are differences between their empanadas, I'd call it a tie because both are exceptional. Just go to the one closest to you. Or if you're looking for a nicer restaurant interior, this is more modern. But Javi's feels more folksy authentic and 9 Julio is more true to the major metropolis that is Buenos Aires. After all, the restaurant is named after a street there that is the widest in the world! Not that I've been to South America, let along Argentina. LOL The five stars includes the rest of the menu. The house-made sweet potato chips are incredible. I could not stop eating them. The chipotle dipping sauce only made them better. Beyond that I'd be curious to try the Peruvian chicken or chimichurri steak entrées. They had nice little selection of four beers. I went for the Mexican logger, but I almost got the IPA. Lager beer I like a nice lager beer. They had a few wines too, although wasn't really tuning into them. The space was nice and clean. Friendly and helpful service when I ordered at the counter. A good selection of tables to choose from and some interesting shapes at that. And there's a long bar with barstools along the front window. I like the artful interior decorating. Above par for fast food. Open 11-9 every day except Mondays. Check in on Yelp to get free chips. A $3.95 value!

Empanada & Salad Combo (Farmers' Market Salad)

Quickly becoming a favorite spot! The interior is airy/spacious, very clean, and cute. As soon as you walk in you will be greeted and helped. The menu focuses on empanadas, of course, but there are a few other entree dishes as well as salads to choose from. I've tried most of the empanadas and they are all yummy. They do lean a little bit on the dry side, though they are served with a sauce (chimichurri?). The sauce is a little too oily for me. I prefer their house hot sauce. My favorite empanada flavors are the chicken rojo and any of the beef ones. I would recommend a half salad and 2 empanadas for lunch or 3 for dinn I was not the hugest fan of the chimichurri steak--too chewy. But the Peruvian roasted chicken is tasty, if empanadas aren't for you. I also really enjoyed the farmer's market salad. The watermelon arugula salad is nice and fresh for summer as well. I hope they expand their salad selection because they do pair well with the empanadas. The smashed potatoes are really nice as well. Props as well for having a Coke soda fountain. And all in all the pricing is very reasonable and the service is fast. I look forward to trying more of the empanadas!

Very tasty empanadas--we ordered the Jamaican beef and chicken salsa verde. The Jamaican beef was very flavorful. The chicken salsa verde was a bit dry but the chimichurri sauce livened things up. We also got the chimichurri steak and rice along with a strawberry lime agua fresca. The steak was medium rare, juicy and the chimichurri was delicious. The agua Fresca was sweet and refreshing. I will be returning to try the other empanadas and the Peruvian chicken. Service is counter service--quick and efficient. The decor is very beautiful---orange and blue tile work, a mural of 9 Julio Street in Buenos Aires, after which the restaurant is named. read more

Love Erica's empanadas! They are delicious and the dough is light and not too heavy as other empanada dough could be. I recently asked her if she could do empanadillas (smaller size for finger food) for a holiday party that I was attending and they were a complete success! People loved them. I picked them up just before going to the party and they were so warm and delicious. My favorite are salsa verde chicken, Cuban picadillo (they remind me of the Peruvian empanadas) Chimichurri Beef, Fugazetta and Mushroom onion, a favorite for vegetarians. We've also tried the salads and they really good. read more

Must try!! Stopped by a few weeks ago with the family for lunch and this place was amazing. The empanadas were incredibly flavorful, the staff was friendly and the owner checked-in after the first few bites to see how everything tasted. One thing that really stood out was the design and decor. Simple, bright and contemporary, while maintaining a comfortable family-friendly atmosphere. I am absolutely dumb founded at the fact that this place has any more than a 1 star rating. I've tried a lot of empanadas in my life, as my family is Argentinian. I've tried many empanadas in both the US and Argentina, and many of the ones I've tried in the US have been good. This place, however, was not. My two empanadas were so small, and I was really hungry, but I couldn't even finish them. The dough tasted bad, and the fillings were gross. Also, the ambiance was bland, cold, and sterile, and reminded me of a chain fast food place. If you want good empanadas in the East bay, there are other places to go. read more

Recently opened and omg it's so good. We've been visiting 9Julio for a while at their farmers market stand and so excited they've opened an eat in. The empanadas are amazing, my favorite is the Cuban beef. Next time will be trying the plates. The whole team is helpful and everything came out quick. Excellent place to stop in for lunch or dinner. We even brought home enough to last through the week! Went back as promised! We had the smashed potatoes and the Peruvian chicken in addition to the plantain chips and a repeat of the Picadillo and Jamaican Beef. The chicken is perfectly spiced and so tender. The smashed potatoes were also very good; added some of the in-house chimichurri and it's a wow. The plantains are well salted, crispy, and come with an avocado dip. Totally worth it. Now have to decide between empanadas and main plates for our next visit; it's all so good. read more

Argentinian style empanadas!!! Crispy dough with juicy and flavorful filling. We tried chicken rojo with a little kick spiciness, the Jamaican beef, the mushroom onion!!! We also enjoyed the chimichurri steak Decorated nicely with murals of the widest avenue across Americas: 9 de Julio Ave, Buenos Aires, Argentina. Been wanting to try this place for awhile and got that opportunity! First off, staff is awesome. Very personable and friendly. Empanadas were very delish with a good filling, chimichurri was spot on, and the avo-jalapeno dipping sauce was a good take on guac (plantain chips were also quite good). Visited 9 Julio with a friend who knows the owner. The food was delicious, especially the sauces. In addition to empanadas, they serve Peruvian chicken and steak chimichurri. A great dine in experience. The empanadas were delicious, chile verde, mushrooms and cheese and spinach and cheese. Chimichurri steak is my favorite, I'll come here anytime for steak. We went to the soft opening in Oakland today. Everything was so flavorful and delish! I ordered the two empanada combo with Jamaican Beef and Chicken rojos plus the plantain chips with the house spin on guac, steak chimichurri and hibiscus aqua fresca. The flavors in everything were vibrant and fragrant. The plantain chips are an amazing snack with or without the "guac". The texture of the "guac" was so smooth but did not take away from the guac-ness of it all. It really is an amazing pairing. Everything that I had today will bring me back before the end of the weekend. read more

The empanadas are tasty and filling. Our party of five ordered a dozen empanadas, two salads, sweet potato chips and a chimichurri steak. We also ordered the Jamaican punch and the Agua Fresca Strawberry lime which were both refreshing. There are a variety of beverages available including beers on tap. We shared all the food and still had leftovers. We loved everything we had and all of us definitely would return as well as we plan to order the empanadas half baked and then reheat them at home on those days when you're not in the mood to cook. The service is friendly and top notch with a little dose of a standup comedian. This is definitely a great place with excellent service and quality food for a reasonable price. Our favorites were the Cuban Picadillo and Jamaican Beef. Both salads were wonderful with fresh ingredients. We enjoyed everything! There is plenty of space inside for eating in and it's spotless and clean. read more

Established in 2014.

Our mission is to bring cultures together through food. Food is a universal language that can bridge cultural boundaries and bring people together in spite of our differences. That's why we love empanadas! These handheld turnovers filled with meat, vegetables, or fruit are a staple in Latin America but are loved worldwide. While exploring Buenos Aires, Argentina, we found another icon that captured the same universal spirit - Avenida 9 de Julio. It's the inspiration for the name 9 Julio Empanada Kitchen. Named for Argentina's Independence Day (July 9, 1816), Avenida 9 de Julio is the widest street in the world with 14 lanes that span the width of a full city block. Walking down the avenue, you feel the energy and vibrancy of the city and its people. Yet, it's also reminiscent of the electricity you feel, walking through Paris, NY city, and most importantly the Bay Area. That's why we know that Argentina's favorite street food will be right at home on the streets of the Bay Area.

The egg salad was sooo watery, it was like a soup. Just dripping and running down out of the bread. Also, a HEAVY mustard taste, overpowering everything else. The burger had a piece of something (literally) translucent on it, apparently their idea of a slice of cheese? And the accompanying fries were COLD. The toasted almond milkshake was so runny it was like a flavored water. Not at all a creamy consistency, I don't even think they made it with milk, it seemed to be just a tiny bit of ice cream, some water and a lot of ice cubes (still visible in the shake). Just nasty. The other milkshake seemed ok. Of course, with the order being from DoorDash, it's near-impossible to get any real support, so it's just basically a total loss. I don't know if Fenton's just doesn't GAF, since they're always busy anyways, OR if they need to pay their employees more in order to attract the sort of person who's capable of being trained to care to do things correctly, but it's just really a bummer that such a neat, fun, old legacy business is allowing itself to disappoint customers and turn into a big mess like this.
