Unexpectedly good - a really nice restaurant with excellent food. The place is visually striking with a very sophisticated decor. We ate outside on the patio which was very nice, surrounded by shrubs, but the inside was particularly nice: inviting, clean, sophisticated design. It looks like it used to be a garage so having all the doors raised red interior text Carrier seamless and pleasing. Service was excellent. The food was delicious. We ordered all Thai dishes and enjoyed them very much. We had a little bit of trouble finding the place, even following the map. It turns out that there is a large sign on the corner but the writing is such that I couldn't read what it had said, and the restaurant itself is hidden behind a line of shrubbery behind a parking lot on the corner. So follow the map and if you don't see it first keep looking where the map says it should be and you'll find it - but it took us two or three times back-and-forth. My friend kept telling me how good this place was, but I'll admit I was skeptical. I mean, can anything be as good as Phoenix when it comes to upscale Chinese? The answer is yes, this place just topped out the chart as my new favorite. First off, the ambiance in here is awesome. It's dimly lit with an upscale, intimate feel and perfect for a date night out or just a casual dinner with friends. The staff was super friendly and attentive. My friend and I opted to order several of the appetizers and graze until we were full. The chicken satay skewers were good but my least favorite. I liked the dipping sauces and the chicken itself had good flavor but it had an odd texture. It was slightly rubbery and I had a difficult time cutting it. Nonetheless, it didn't go uneaten. We also tried the fried spring rolls, which were my favorite. They were crispy and came with a yummy dipping sauce. The fresh spring rolls were easily my second favorite. They were a nice addition to our meal to break up everything fried, and we ordered a second round of them. The dumplings and spring rolls were also yummy. I should add that all of these appetizers were brought to our table remarkably quickly. While we didn't order off the entree menu, I saw the servers walking by with dish after dish and every single one looked amazing. This place has already sucked me in as my new favorite place to eat. This very recently open Thai, Pan-Asian restaurant is very nicely appointed, among the most attractive interiors of any Asian restaurant in the Triad, though the location, in the former & apparently "Historic" Lyles Chevy garage area, behind Sears, and adjoining an auto repair shop, is a bit of a shocker, on first take. The restaurant actually faces E. Dayton St, a side street off N. Main. The colors are dark, gray and black, with some beautiful Asian wall decorations, and there is a large Buddha statute in the right side seating area, all of which gives a certain serenity, and a sense of other worldliness. The ceiling is the bare, open to the roof type, and it may very well be more than a little noisy when the restaurant is crowded. The restaurant is working with a very, very limited menu at both lunch and dinner currently, but expects to move to a fuller menu sometime next week. Today the lunch menu was limited to 9 lunch specials ( no appetizers) all in the $8 price range, with the choice of a spring roll, nice little bargain there. The Spring Rolls (we tried both the fresh and the fried) were very good, as were the dipping sauces. We chose to try 3 dishes - The Pho (Chicken was the only choice), the Lemongrass Beef with white rice, and the Pad Thai (Chicken also). The Pho was the expected large serving, and the broth was excellent, with the thinly sliced white meat chicken a little on the dry side. The dish was accompanied by Thai basil, lettuce, and bean sprouts. We took some of the fresh chopped cilantro from the Pad Thai and added that, along with a small amount of Chili Oil from the condiment set that is on each table, and the taste combinations were great. The Lemongrass Beef was outstanding - thin slices of nicely cooked beef, and plenty of flavorful pieces of lemongrass, in a nice brown sauce. The dish had a nice amount of heat that built through the consumption of the dish, and was gently muted by the white rice. All in all, this is a very nice entree. The Pad Thai was a nice dish, also with some residual heal, but more sweetness than I care for, and the noodles were almost congealed at the bottom of the dish, difficult to separate. I am becoming resigned to the probability that I'm just not a Pad Thai kind of guy, but there is much else here to try here, or there will be. The service was excellent - everyone was friendly, and very helpful. I gather that this is very much a family affair, and there is some family connection (by marriage?) with Thai Chiang Mai on Highway 68 near I-40. 98 Asian Bistro opened October 2014 in High Point across from the Zaxby's and next door to the Bentley dealership on North Main. It's located in the old Lyles Chevrolet garage. This restaurant is an ambitious yet much needed and reinvigorating addition to the High Point and greater Piedmont Triad dining scene. Kudos to the owners, Tu and Todd Sen, for pulling it off. I first met Tu in the late 90s when she was working at Thai Chiang Mai up the street. Thai Chiang Mai opened in 1998, so that is the significance of the number 98 in 98 Asian Bistro's name. Thai Chiang Mai has since moved up NC 68 near I-40 in Greensboro. 98 Asian Bistro was years in the making as it was always Tu's dream to own her own restaurant. Tu and Todd's background is Thai and their menu primarily consists of Thai food. The restaurant is gorgeous. It's obvious a lot of thought, effort, and investment went into the property. The restaurant is open and spacious with vaulted ceilings, the various dining areas separated by large gold curtains and walls of varying height. Parts of the old car shop remain intact such as the sliding garage door. The centerpiece of the restaurant is a giant statue of Buddha surrounded by candles and big green plants. Other nice decor includes huge Chinese embossing artwork (possibly a holdover from the old A Ma Chinese restaurant - how's that for High Point history? - but I can't recall 100%), various ornate Thai sculptures, and intricate fabrics. There's a sleek bar, private dining room, and seating arrangements designed for couples to big groups. Noise level is moderate and the ambiance is casual yet sophisticated. At night, it's romantic. There may be patio seating in the future. Speaking of the patio, there's a rickshaw (hand-pulled passenger cart) from Thailand out front. The menu includes appetizers like chicken satay (skewers) and fried calamari, soups such as tom yum (lemongrass) and tom kha (coconut), salads like woon sen (bean thread noodles) and larb (tangy chopped chicken salad), various rice and noodle dishes (e.g. pad Thai, drunken noodles), curries, and entrees like lemongrass pork and white pepper and garlic chicken. Vietnamese cuisine includes pho noodle soup and vermicelli noodles (bun thit nuong). Everything is reasonably priced. Most entrees are $12 or less each. I've tried a lot of the food. Here's a rundown of what I've had so far (using the official names/spellings from the menu): Appetizers: * String Beans - green beans, lightly battered, served crispy with a sweet chili sauce *Crispy Spring Roll - cabbage, carrots, and bean thread noodles wrapped in rice paper (fried), served with a sweet carrot sauce * Soft Spring Roll - carrots, cabbage, and bean thread noodles, wrapped in rice paper (soft), served with peanut sauce Noodles and Entrees: * Pad Sa Ew - chicken stir-fried with wide rice noodles, egg, broccoli, and carrots, served in a sweet dark sauce * Vermicelli noodles - chicken, steamed vermicelli noodles, bean sprouts, cucumber, peanuts, cilantro, lettuce, homemade sauce * Crying Tiger (Steak) - grilled steak sliced with a homemade sauce served with steamed vegetables * Ground Chicken with Basil - ground white meat chicken, chopped string beans, bell peppers, fresh basil, brown sauce Desserts: * Coconut ice cream * Fried banana slices * Sweet sticky rice The String Beans are like tempura green beans. The batter is nice and light. Not a bad snack to start your meal off with. The Crispy Spring Rolls are the small spring rolls I grew up loving from Thai Chiang Mai and before that, Rearn Thai in Greensboro. They're a little greasy, but they are addicting and taste great, especially when dipped in the carrot sauce. The Soft Spring Rolls are essentially Vietnamese fresh spring rolls with soft, translucent white, rice paper wrapping. It's a healthy, yet still tasty, alternative to the fried rolls. I really enjoyed the Crying Tiger dish at Thai Chiang Mai and I'm happy they have it on the menu at 98 Asian Bistro. I recommend getting the steak cooked medium rare. The slices of meat are soft, tender, and savory. The "homemade sauce" consists of Thai chilies, cilantro, and fish sauce (best I can tell). It's delectable. Vegetables include snow peas, broccoli, and carrots. The Pad Sa Ew is a comforting noodle dish. I like the somewhat chewy, but not too mushy, consistency of the thick noodles. The Vermicelli noodle dish is very good. The "homemade sauce" in this dish also consists of fish sauce (Vietnamese nuoc mam). Traditionally, it's served on the side. At 98 Asian Bistro, it is served already mixed into the bowl. If you prefer it on the side, you'll have to make a request. The Ground Chicken with Basil is a flavorful and delicious dish no matter how refined (or unrefined) one's palate. The ground chicken is marinated in a scrumptious sauce and is easy to eat. Save room for dessert. Try the mango and sticky rice if available. Service is terrific. Reservations are recommended. read more

What a fabulous experience we had at 98 Asian Bistro! My best friend and I came here for dinner last Saturday night to celebrate him moving down here to North Carolina. We love Asian food and we actually make our own all the time; Okayu, dumplings, won ton soup and eggrolls. The exterior and interior of the restaurant are both spectacular, super attractive and very sexy. Make sure you bow to the big Buddha in the main dining area. We were seated immediately (around 6:30pm on Saturday night) and we decided to sit at a small bar table. I enjoyed a glass of prosecco to start (and white wine with my dinner) and my dining companion enjoyed a fabulous mojito. It's hard to find a good authentic mojito; this bartender obviously knows what they're doing. We started off with some crispy spring rolls and shrimp rolls which were both fantastic and very tasty. The dipping sauces are out of this world! We also shared a bowl of the Tom Yum soup which was very spicy and creamy. The mushrooms were stellar. I enjoyed the "Crying Tiger" entree; sliced steak, fresh veggies and rice served with a refreshing herbed sauce. I absolutely loved my meal! My friend enjoyed the Tofu Curry and he very much enjoyed his meal and ate the rest of mine. We decided to sample and sip on the hot sake after our meal and holy smokes that was strong and delicious! Ok, so I can't lie. When I planned Date Night, this wasn't where I wanted to go. We wanted to go to Kabuto, but they had no reasonable reservation times left and I didn't want to drive to Greensboro! I had heard about this place from a friend who loves it and I love Thai food, so why not. They had plenty of reservation spots available and seated us promptly when we arrived. The decor of the restaurant is a little overwhelming, in my personal opinion. It's like being slapped in the face with Thailand! A giant Buddha is the center of the dining room, but it isn't the only thing your eyes go to when you arrive! It was def over the top. However it was clean and the staff was friendly. We ordered our meals... I ordered Ground Chicken and I added some extra veggies to it. My sweetie ordered Pad Thai with Medium spice. We should have gotten Spring Rolls prior to the meal but they never arrived. For the amount of people in the facility, it seemed to take FAR too long to get our food. By the time it arrived, I was ready to eat the table. So I dove right in. Mine was delicious and I cleaned my plate! My boyfriend's however was probably some of the hottest food we have ever had. Medium spice my ass! If that was medium I can't imagine what hot is like. We love spicy but my God this was hot. To sum up, the food was good, but CRAZY SPICY. Service was good, but not amazing. Last night, I was made to feel that my patronage was not at all appreciated. My decision to share online was a result of the owner/chef's poor handling of the situation, and I am being both accurate and honest with my description of the dining experience below. Our dining experience started off on the wrong footing, but that is bound to happen when you are waiting 1+ hour for your entrees - it was not our main concern however. Below are the two main issues we had with our experience: After discovering mushrooms in all of our dishes, 4 guests including myself sent back our meals to be remade. Three dishes were brought back out quickly and there were still remnants of mushrooms, and the waiter stated the 4th dish was being remade so it would be a few moments longer. Our group went ahead with our meal, but after paying the bill, we kindly asked our waiter to clarify whether all of the dishes were remade. He stated that only one was, the Pad Thai, and the others just had the mushroom removed. I made an effort to share my experience with management, as I felt the matter could have been avoided altogether, however the manager was dismissive of our concerns. I was advised to speak with the owner/chef who would handle it directly, but the situation got worse from there. I complained that mushrooms were not listed on the menu as one of the ingredients, despite every other ingredient being listed, and she replied that it was a vegetable and therefore I should be understanding. I let her know that is not acceptable, as people can have allergies or dietary restrictions. Perhaps she was stressed or had a long night, but the conversation ended with the owner/chef telling me I was not listening to her & with her demanding I inform her what she could do to fix the situation. I replied that I was just sharing my experience and bringing it to her attention, so she can address the situation for the future, rather than just posting directly to Yelp or other social sites. Then I calmly walked away as not to engage further. Afterthought: The owner's reply to my review is expected, but it's worth noting that she is grossly misrepresenting how she handled the situation and is outright lying about having remade all the dishes and the statements I made. read more

I looked for a Thai restaurant and went over their menu. I immediately was drawn to their Fried Duck entree, a pricey $25. But I enjoy duck. Was very disappointed to see two legs, that looked like some meat was carved out of it. No breast meat or thigh. I soon realized that the portion that was cut off from the legs, were masquerading as meats in the sauce. One would think it would be the breast or thigh meat. What a rip. I would give 98 Asian Bistro 3.5 stars overall. However, Yelp does not permit 3.5 stars and the dessert was out of this world, so I will concede an official 4 star nod. Stopped into 98 Asian Bistro after receiving several referrals from locals. 98 Asian Bistro is a highly regarded staple in the area and there aren't a lot of options for quality asian cuisine in town, at least not that I have discovered. The restaurant is decorated very nicely, is dimly lit and has an upscale, intimate feel. It was crowded when I walked in on a Friday night, but I immediately found room at the bar. The drinks and dinner menu were concise and made selections very easy due to the limited but tasty sounding selections in each category. I ordered the 98 Ice Tea for my drink. The menu says it's their take on the Long Island. While I could not taste a difference between the 98 and a regular Long Island, it was very good. I went with the wings for my appetizer. They come dry with the sauce on the side. I generally like my wings this way, but the wings were unfortunately overcooked. However, the flavor was still decent and the sweet chili dipping sauce was very good. I had difficulty deciding what to get for my entree. I was torn between the Sweet and Sour Chicken and the Crying Tiger steak. The bartender was pretty certain in his endorsement of the steak, so that sealed the deal for me. The entrees come with the choice of a soft roll or a crispy spring roll. I chose the latter. The crispy roll portion was small when it came - about the size of a cigar cut in half, and very good. I thought this was an especially nice touch compared to the huge honking burrito-sized egg rolls many places serve prior to the entree. The steak came with fresh vegetables. While it doesn't say on the menu, I think the Crying Tiger is a hanger steak. I ordered it medium and it was cooked perfectly. The vegetables were also tasty. The steak arrived with what the menu describes as a special sauce, which had a very pungent and distinct aroma, and not in a good way. I have been served spoiled steak in restaurants before and my first instinct was that it might be the meat. Fortunately, it wasn't. The steak smelled and tasted very good. I did taste the sauce and it also tasted very good, but I could not get past the smell. I will chalk it up to my own weird tastes and not penalize the restaurant too much, though the the smell did permeate my clothing and facial hair, resulting in an immediate shower when I got home. In reading other Yelp reviews, you will notice a consistent recommendation: homemade coconut ice cream. Those recommendations are 100% correct. It's nothing short of amazing and when you visit 98 Asian Bistro, you gotta get some in your life. It really is that good. I rate my overall visit to 98 Asian Bistro as good with some flashes of very good to great. I encourage anyone to visit and I look forward to giving it another try in the near future. read more

We were here for a weekday lunch and I was immediately awestruck by its beautiful decor . We got lunch specials one of them is Basil chicken which is basically ground chicken cooked to perfection in spices served with a cup of hot rice . And the other dish was Chicken fried rice which was also pretty good . Basil chicken was my favourite . I only give this place 3 stars because of our server, Lydia. We made a reservation for 2 today and were seated upon arrival. The hostess had us seated at this very awkward section where there was just our table, and we were right by where the original entrance was. We then asked her if there were other tables available, and she said the other tables were for reservations also, and gave us the option of either sitting at this cafe table, or at the bar. We then decided to sit at the cafe table bc there were no other options. Our server comes and greets us after several minutes (I'm thinking it's because of where we were seated and she couldn't see us immediately). She then took our drink orders and food order. The first thing that came out was the fresh roll, which was not at all like a "spring/summer roll" you would expect- just straight veggies rolled inefficiently which all the veggies just come out as soon as you dip it in the sauce. Then, our soups came out. We ordered the Tom yum soup which was pretty good, and so were the fried shrimp rolls. When I say cafe table, I mean the size of the table is literally the standard size of an end/side table. The guy brought us our entree which was the pranang curry. Due to the glasses and plates on our food, we had little to no space to add another dish to the table. The guy just looks at us and acts as if he's going to put it on top of one of the urns in front of us and then asks, "so what do u want me to do with this" when clearly, there is no space on the freaking table. First of all, how is this our problem? They could have timed the food coming out better. We then managed to move everything into a tinier space to make room for the entree. (With the guy just standing there looking annoyed). As we were about to get started on our entree, we noticed that one of the bowls looked used and dirtied up, so we waited for anyone to come by to replace it for us. several minutes later, the owner swung by and asked us how we were doing. By this point, the experience as a whole left a bad taste in my mouth and lost my appetite. I explained the situation to the owner and she looked and "seemed" apologetic and offered to seat us elsewhere. Had the idiotic hostess just done that from the get go, we would not have been in this position and probably much happier with the whole experience. What made me angrier was when after we were seated, we saw 2 other ladies come in and get seated at a regular table. AFTER ID ASKED THE STUPID HOSTESS IF THERE WERE ANY OTHER SEATS AVAILABLE. we explained this to the owner and she said "it's probably not how you're thinking. they arrange things in a certain way and etc etc." this does not answer my original question of "are there any other tables available that we can switch to?" LOL. Sweet excuse. By this point, we were ready to just leave. We did not touch the entree so they didn't charge us for it (obv). Lydia swung by and apologized over and over again, and honestly, she is what made the experience OK from being really crappy. Overall, the food we tasted was ALRIGHT and seemed too Americanized. (DONT ORDER THE MARGARITA- THEY DONT MAKE IT GOOD). Overpriced for the quality. ALSO- THE FRESH ROLLS FOR $7.00 - NOT WORTH IT. If you want authentic and not overly pricey Thai food, Bangkok cafe is absolutely delicious with great customer service. :) --EDIT-- LOL @ the owner's passive aggressive response. I'm not here to pick a fight, but the response was definitely like a slap in the face. As a business owner, of course you take pride in your food and whatnot. What you should work on is better managing the staff and also if this is the "busiest" time of the year, wouldn't one prep for it in a timely manner? Human error is human error. However, no apologies from the people who made the errors? lol don't make me laugh. This definitely seems like an internal issue. Also, an effort to rectify the situation - coming over to check up on us and when we explain the situation- doesn't first apologize and comes up with excuses/reasons- listen. I've worked in the customer service industry for over 10 years. This may not be a lot of years, but throughout, I've learned plenty. And the 'effort' to help the situation better was clearly not good enough. You come to an unhappy table and you check to see if there is anything you can do. You don't come up with reasons/excuses. It was clearly too late, and also, we did not appreciate the dirty look by the owner as we were leaving. We were not rude in any way at the restaurant, we appreciated the 'effort' by the owner, and to be stared at while we are walking out after we paid $60.00 for appetizers and drinks, absolutely unacceptable. read more

I am sorry, but there are much better Thai restaurants and I don't understand the high praise reviews. The Good-actually the great was the freshness and not chewy calamari. Cooked to perfection and served with a spicy sauce that left your lips tingling. The decor and seating was attractive and upscale Asian. Very Nice. However this restaurant is pretty average. Slighly dry satay and tastless Crying Tiger steak and sauce were the low points. My favorite Tom Kha soup was bland and unexciting. By far this was not the best prepared I have tasted. A big disappointment. The service was spotty. We were served our great calamari with no dishware. So we ate it out of the serving plate. The Crying Tiger was served without a spring roll. Pretty much this place was not bad, but in no way do I see it as spectacular. In short-AVERAGE. read more

This place is near and dear to my heart. Not only does it serve up some of the finest Thai food in the Triad, but it's owned by some wonderful friends. Todd and Tu started their journey at Thai Chang Mai in High Point years ago with the rest of their family. They treated their customers like family. Through a chain of events, Todd and Tu ended up closing down that location and moving to an lovely place down the road on 68, towards the airport. If you're down that way, no doubt you'll have a wonderful experience as their family still runs that. They missed their friends and patrons here in the heart of High Point, so they opened 98 Asian Bistro. I'm so glad they did. The restaurant itself is breathtakingly beautiful, and comforting all at the same time. The food, well it speaks for itself. The presentation is lovely, and the prices are incredible. Most lunch entrees are $8 and dinner $12. There are some pricier options, but they are worth it. This place is quickly becoming the place to be in High Point. I'm so impressed by this restaurant. Where should I start... First, the decor...having been to so many Thai restaurants both in and outside of the Triad area, I am used to seeing the typical basic look and feel with no/limited decoration. Well, not at this place! As you can see from the pictures, the restaurant is beautifully decorated. From the rickshaw to the ornate wall decoration, from the big Buddha statue to the glistening silver tree - you will definitely be impressed by the modern and elegant look of the restaurant. This restaurant is definitely 'first-date' material... Now..., you might be wondering, if the place looks that modern, will the food be authentic? I came here during lunch and got the lunch special. They have a great selection for the lunch special, all for $9. I got the chicken curry and the fresh roll. Both tasted delicious and authentic. Service was excellent... The waiters checked on me multiple times to refill my water and make sure that I got what I needed. Sooo happy I found this place!! Can't wait to come here again and try it for dinner. read more
