I like their friendly service. But I didn't care that they charged me a hazardous waste disposal fee when it was not related to checking out my car. Nathan there said they didn't dispose of anything hazardous and that they do that for all vehicles regardless of whether the service is done or not. He was kind enough to offer a refund for it if I come in, but that's ok. The amount was only a couple of dollars. I only bring it up because I just thought that was unusual to be charged something that wasn't done. Maybe that's what most repair shops do. I don't know. read more

I recently got my jeep water pump replaced at Midas 8 months ago. The water pump they installed started leaking after 7 months of use. Midas wanted to charge me another $1,000 to get it replaced due to there subpar installation. I looked around to see if I could get it replaced cheaper and found A-1 auto which could replaced it for a third of the price. Took it to A-1 auto and they fixed it within a day. Satisfied with A-1 auto and will now make this my first stop for any future vehicle repairs and services. read more

I had heard about A-1 Auto Repair through a friend of mine who was a customer. When I gave him a ride to pick up his car from A-1, I was surprised to find vehicles of different kinds from common to the not-so-common (they were even working on a Ferrari). I kept this mental note for future reference. Fast forward some time later, I purchased a DeLorean DMC-12, and the engine overheated. I contacted A-1 after remembering the diverse cars they had in their garage at the time, and I'm very glad I did. For one, they were able to take the car immediately after I called, and were willing to do the engine overhaul that it required. They were always in communication with me after I brought the car to them, informed me every step of the way what needed to be done. Whenever I stopped by to check on the car as it was being worked on, the staff and Bubba himself were always accomodating, polite and were not shy at all showing their progress. Once they got my car back up and running, they notified me, I picked it up, and was NOT disappointed in the least. After all that hard work, the car was better than ever! Now, it did take quite a bit of time for the repairs to be completed. HOWEVER, one must understand that this was not a vehicle they had worked on before, and they were careful in doing their research to ensure everything had been properly done on this major project (because I let the vehicle sit for a month and water had gotten into the block. VERY BAD). Also, parts had to be ordered from DMC Texas, and shipping takes time, like it or not. On the upside, the crew had become very familiar with the vehicle, and the quality of their hard work was second to none. We live in California and our daughter goes to Hawaii Pacific University. Her brakes went out and she was panicked and had no idea what to do. I put in a few calls to some local friends and 2 of them said to have the car towed to A-1 Auto Repair and to ask for Bubba. I can not tell you how glad I am that I took their advice. Bubba was SO SO nice and when I told him my daughter is in college and plays volleyball and needs her car asap he assured me he would do his best. Terrible!!!! Stay away from this place.... They told they wold come next morning. That I should call early Saturday morning. I called, and after a few hours with leaving messages on their voice mail I finally reached them. The person who took the telephone told me to call back at 2pm. I thought that was strange since that is their closing time. And sure enough at 2pm, when I called they had closed. So much for their service. If they just would have told me at the beginning I could have called other shops instead, and not wasted my valuable time, as I need the car up and running as soon as possible. read more

This is my second review of A-1 Auto Repair and just like my first review, I have nothing but positive things to say. My 2005 Escalade had developed a loud engine "chatter" that resembled problems with my valve springs or lifters. I took my truck to another shop before A-1 and was told I was probably right about my untrained diagnosis and they weren't able to help because of the extent of the repairs. I called A-1 and they were able to fit me in within an hour of leaving the other garage. Davin (I apologize if I spelled his name incorrectly) was upfront with costs. Anyhow, within two hours of dropping off my truck, I get a call that repairs were complete. It turned out the issue was loose connections in my ignition coils/spark pug wires. To say I was ecstatic of the outcome would be an understatement. Bubba and his team didn't turn me away because of the potential size of the job. They thoroughly diagnosed the problem and fixed it. I have to update my review and definitely change the starts from 2 to all 5. After a rather disappointing and frustrating experience, Bubba reaches out to me and offered to have my car towed back to the shop and he also offered me a rental car for the time they will check out the car. They kept the car for about 4 or 5 days changed the whole file system and really took care of me. He really changed the experience into a great one and I will definitely bring my car back there and I'm happy to say I finally found a shop I can trust with my car. I usually don't write bad reviews because if I have nothing positive to say I rather say nothing but I'm really starting to get upset and very disappointed. Last week I had my car towed to their shop because it would not start and the "service engine light" came on. They checked it out and said it was only a dirty throttle body and a vacuum leak, total comes out to about $162. I was like great news I come pick it up right now. Next day I try to go to work and the car would not stay on. As soon as I put my foot off the brakes and try to put it in drive it would die. I missed work because of that btw. Next day the car starts again. Ok great! But the day after it would not stay on again and service engine light is back on. So I managed to keep the car on and drove right to the shop, that was Saturday. They check it out again. Now all the sudden the scanner says "crankshaft position sensor and cylinder misfire" and some spark plugs need to be replaced, total comes out to about $214. So I was like ok just fix it. I found it kinda odd that these codes did not come up the first time I brought it in but ok, I paid it and left the shop believing they fixed the problem. Today is Monday, so again 2 days later and my car won't stay on again and the service engine light is back on. I paid almost $400 and the problem is still not fixed. I don't mind paying money for good service, but I feel like I wasted my money because the problem is still there. I will bring the car back tomorrow if I can manage it to keep it running because my insurance only pays for one tow and I already used that last week. I'm more disappointed than upset because I trusted them a second time, gave them some more of my money and the car is still having the same issue. read more

I have been coming here for as long as I have lived in Oahu, 16 years. In the beginning, there was Jim and his number 1 mechanic was Bubba. Jim was a freind of freind who was highly recomended as someone you could trust and count on. Bubba is good old southern boy. Jim took real good care of me and we began our relationship. He was honest and very trustworthy. What I noticed most was he would not do additional work if it was needed at the time. Over the years and a few cars, Jim semi retired and then retired and Bubba rose to buy and own this auto repair business. Bubba treated me with that southern hospitality we all love and we established our relationship thorough many repairs. Bubba too had the same traits and work ethics as Jim. Bubba has become a freind, someone I respect and trust as well. He has always taken care of me and I have been really happy with his work and his rates. Last year June, I was diagnosed with C. I needed my brakes done and Bubba's gift to me when I was dealing with the illness were my brakes! It was his way of giving from his heart. It was then I realized he was a man of God and Faith. He added me to his prayer board in his office. I am blessed to call him a brother and although he is already too busy, I would highly recomend anyone who wants a great neigborhood and trusting mechanic to call on him. read more

I had the BEST experience with A-1 Auto Repair. I plan to sell my Saturn L300 as soon as the new car I purchased arrives from the mainland. Unfortunately, I began smelling oil, which worsened over the course of a few weeks. Of course, I didn't want to keep driving my Saturn and cause a worse problem and I also don't want to put more money into it, so I searched online for a repair shop with good reviews and I found very positive reviews for A-1. I called on a Friday afternoon in late August and spoke with Bubba, one of the owners, who patiently answered my questions and advised me that there would be no charge for looking at the car as long as they didn't need to take anything apart. That's exactly what I wanted to hear! The following Tuesday, I arrived at A-1 at 8:15 a.m. so I could be the first one on the schedule. Even though they don't open until 8:30, an employee still walked me inside right away after seeing me sitting in my car, introduced me to other employees along the way, and finally into the office where Bubba sat behind a desk. While I waited, I saw 2 mechanics under my lifted car checking it out. Then, much to my surprise, Bubba also inspected my car. Within 45 minutes of my arrival at A-1, Bubba called me over to the lifted car and proceeded to SHOW me what they'd found as he and I stood under the vehicle (never had that happen before and I've had a lot of auto repairs done elsewhere). Besides the friendly, family atmosphere and impressive professionalism, I was most impressed by A-1's honesty. After determining the source of the slow oil leak and approximate $700 repair cost, Bubba suggested I NOT repair the vehicle since it's a minor issue but a major repair (because of the location of the leak) and the fact I'll be selling the car. They had tightened some bolts that were loose under the carriage and causing some other type of fluid to leak. I asked a lot of questions and he thoroughly answered them all, as if I was his only customer of the day. Based on our conversation, he suggested I have my tires rotated at a cost of $20 since I was way overdue. And that's all I spent that day. Not bad! Lastly, just before my tires were rotated, I mentioned to Bubba that I'd had a multi-point inspection done at Saturn and they determined several expensive repairs were needed, including back brakes, alignment, rack and pinion, etc. Bubba checked those things without my asking him to--for free--test drove the car and disagreed with Saturn's multi-point inspection and need for repairs. If you want an honest mechanic, this is where you need to go. I will definitely be back if I ever have car problems. read more

I've been going to Jim and Bubba since I moved to Oahu from Maui. They were recommended to me by several friends, and I've been very happy with them. I'm not a car fanatic, and I drive a crappy old 98 Toyota Corolla that I don't like putting more money into than I have to. I avoid taking it to the shop, and generally just try to fix stuff myself or deal with it, but when I need something done, I take it to A1. Jim and Bubba are honest, reasonable, and always call me with quotes before doing any work. They don't try to upsell me if something really doesn't need to be done, and I appreciate that. I needed to ship my car from Oahu to the Big Island using Young Brothers. I spoke with their office staff several times and no one ever told me about the 1/4 tank of gas limit. I arrived to drop off my car 1 hour before closing (BTW....I'm on a plane that evening). They refused the car and off I go to find a shop that will remove some of the gas. Since it is a new car the simple "suck it out of the tank" won't work. The A-1 guys were super. They removed the gas, worked as a team to get me out of there in 20 minutes, and only charged me $40. I made it back to Young Brothers in time and all went as planned. read more

First things first: these guys are excellent. They always get me in the very next day, they are fast, courteous & efficient. Best of all they don't charge you unless there is something to fix! I've been in hawaii over 6 years and have experienced a handful of mechanics that will charge you 100$ or more just to evaluate the car. Not so at A1, and after using them I wouldnt go anywhere else. The folks at A1 are honest. If its something you can fix yourself or doesn't need fixing, they'll let you know. If it's beyond their expertise (unusual), they'll let you know that as well. If I could leave no stars I would . This is the absolute worst place to ever take your car to get fixed. I took my car there 4 times for the same problem and it still hasn't been fixed ....did I mention it also took them over two months to supposedly fix my car the last time they had it and it came back dirty with bugs in my car. My seats were bleached from sitting out in the sun two months while they did nothing and my car just broke down again and again after taking it to them to fix it. Took my mustang to Kapahulu Auto to have my clutch replaced and they lied to me telling me they replaced the master cylinder which I rebuilt months before myself. They charged me for a master cylinder and the labor as well as the clutch and the labor. In total it was over $1,500. Afterwards I check and it's the same makeshift master cylinder I built.... I will never take my cars to Kapahulu Auto again. The lied to me and charged me hundreds of dollars for something they didn't do. Since then I have been taking all my cars to A1 Auto and I've had nothing but great experiences with them. I highly recommend getting your car worked on here. read more

If you want an honest repair shop at a fair market price this is the place to go. I have been using their services since about 2004 and have recommended it to my friends who also were well pleased. As for the lady with the phone problem who wrote a bad review sometimes I do have to call them when they get busy which is understandable.
