Great place for all your auto maintenance & repairs. Reasonably priced and affordable. They do honest work & they don't nickel & dime you for unnecessary work. We have taken all of our various cars (7+) that we own (73 Pinto) to newer model cars after the warranty expires. All of the repairs & maintenance have been done by A & J. Marco is the best! He's been the mechanic that's been doing all the maintenance on my car for 5 years. He is very knowledgeable! Explain your issues to Marco and he will fix it properly and efficiently for you. Never talk to Hovi about your car issues. This place needs a price menu for their services as well. Jeff, Hovey, and Marco are the magic trio of car repair. They've helped me out a couple of times now with different things on different cars. Hovey is great at part selection and suggestions and does not suggest over the top needs. Prices here are very fair, sometimes lower that name brand places. Work is guaranteed and I've never had a problem with them. They are on a first come first serve basis and it helps to catch them when opening if you are in an emergency. They are really good and it may take longer than promised sometimes. Some car problems are like an onion where you peel back a layer and find more problems underneath. Definitely recommend. Honest. How many mechanic reviews start with that. Hovey and Jeff are really good. Been coming here for 14 years now. I was recommended back then. Hope to pass this on. Old adage states that with a business you can get two out of the three following possibilities. Price, quality, and time. At A&J you get price and quality. They do this by keeping the shop small and being involved. This means that it might take some time for them to get to your car. But, ask Hovey for the rental car hook up from the Hertz down the street. They have always upgraded me when Hovey makes the call and the daily rate is cheap. read more

I've been coming to this place for about 15 years through a recommendation from my uncle who's been taking his cars over for years. I can tell you that this is an HONEST place. They will tell you exactly what you need and don't need to do. And the PRICES are fair. Very, very FAIR. Hovey is a friendly guy and the front man, Jeff is a lovely man and owner, who also does the smog checks in the back, and Marco is the mechanic extraordinaire. I've come here for emergencies and maintenance, and sometimes after an occasional oil change with a thorough check up by the dealership. Their prices are so reasonable, so much less than the dealership, and they are friendly, good people, doing good work. I keep coming back. They're not the fastest service, and sometimes they are swamped with cars, but that's true of most good mechanic places. They are not always 'on time', they might take a bit longer to open in the morning and get settled. Hovey is not the multi-tasker. He takes his time. These guys helped me out a HUGE jam! Thank God for Jeff and Hovey! My Benz C240 got stuck in Bakersfield coming down the Gravevine. I towed it to the dealership and they quoted me a new transmission, radiator, and transmission control module. Over $9500 in repairs!!! I was within 3 minutes of leaving my car on the side of the highway with the key. Jeff recommended I tow it into his shop so he could take a look at it. They got the work done within a week, had a guy rediagnose that I would not need a new transmission, replaced my module and only charged $1200 to boot! read more

Let me start by saying I've been to dozens of auto shops in sfv and sgv and finding an honest good mechanic after being put through the ringer at soo many other places was a godsend. I brought my car for a what I thought would be an expensive fix. Got a call the same day from Hovey (guy at the front desk) they could fix it for 75$. They could easily have convinced me it was some 300$ issue like so many others have because I just don't know enough about my car to know otherwise but they were honest and cheap. I honestly didn't think I'd ever say those two words in the same sentence about a mechanic but they really are. My Kia was running great one second and engine light came on followed by tractor sound from engine. I immediately brought to Auto Zone for free diagnostic (they found nothing). We've been going to Jeff at A & J for probably 16 years and I've got to say, he is the best and the most knowledgeable around - nice guy, too. We started just using them for smog checks, etc., but now we use them for everything for our cars, our kids' cars, and even my mom's car. They can always diagnose our vehicles' problems, tell us the actual, honest truth about what is wrong and how to fix it plus they have the best pricing. Another car repair shop wanted to charge me $450 for new spark plugs and a fuel flush due to valve gasket leaks. Hovey, Hobie, Halfsmart. Same difference...Don't go here unless you like terrible service. Held my car for two whole days to make a minor repair. Never called me, I had to call 're-introduce myself each time because Hovey can't TASK much less multi-task. Told him I would be picking up my car first thing in the morning(they open at 8:00 but not really cause Halfsmart needs his breakfast) took 15 minutes to find my work order, 10 minutes for Halfsmart to figure out the credit card machine-Now I am late. Of course someone else parked my car next to the homeless encampment1/4 mile away and no one knew where it was . Asked Jeffrey, the owner, is this how you do business? He told me to wait, I asked him to simply point me to my $%@&?!ing car and I will walk to it. He cursed me, I told Halfsmart I blamed him as he's the one I talked to, why is my car parked far away? Over the sound of his knuckles dragging, I heard him tell me not to come back. No problem there...Oh, the car didn't even get fixed, so there's that, too. I only came here for the crooked smog check place that Jeffrey also owns. Guess I should have gone legit from the get go. read more

I will never go anywhere else! I went in to to Hovey and Jeff wondering how I was ever going to come up with the $800 I had to pay last time to get brakes on my ML-300 (that's just front OR back). I almost fell over when they said they could do it, and did it, for under $300. And it's not like it was a discount job. They have decades of experience in the industry and do everything with expertise (and dare I say love). They changed a headlight for peanuts (very hard to do in these cars).
