I mean, obviously this isn't Michelin cuisine so all you bougie folks bagging on this historic St. Helena icon, should check your privilege. He recommended how to order what we wanted to get the best bang for our buck and also offered to make our rootbeer floats in the heavy frosted mugs. YUMYUMYUM! We ordered: *The 2 for $10 combo with both items being the Coney cheez dogs. *The combo meal with 10 pc Corn dog nuggets, fries and diet RB float ($2 upgrade for the float, rather than soda) *a reg diet RB float, cuz we sure as Hell weren't going to share the one from the combo! Considering the obnoxious amount of food we ordered, it was very reasonably price--especially for St. Helena ($32 + tax) Go by there and give them a shot. I know it's fast food, but seriously it should be decent! We used to stop here all the time coming back from Clear Lake. We were hoping to relive some yummy memories, but unfortunately it was terrible. They told us about their $10 deal for two burgers, which seemed reasonable. We added fries and a shake and one small drink. The shakes are now $8.00! It's a shake! The small drink was $4.00. Total for crappy food was over $27.00. The burgers were so bad. The buns seem stale, the meat is marginal at best, and the cheese wasn't even melted. It's a burger, not rocket science. The fries were stale and pretty much a throwaway. I remember as a teenager stopping in for an ice cold root beer in a glass mug. I was delighted to find I can still have that same concoction. This review is based on the iced latte that I tried for the first time here. I had no idea this was even a thing that's offered. I'm very particular about roasted bean espresso coffee and was completely surprised how great the iced latte is. It's at least as good as Starbucks or Peet's if not better. Whenever I pass by the A&W Root Beer on St. Helena I always remind myself to stop off on my way home for their patented A&W Root Beer Floats because I know that could always be a great way to sober up from a day of wine tasting throughout the valley. For the first time in years, I finally got a chance to do it following an event I went to in St. Helena. A friend and I were looking for an inexpensive place to eat and since we weren't that famished I suggested what else A&W Root Beer? I mean where else can you literally get a refreshing root beer float for only $4.59? No where in Napa Valley that's for sure! When we arrived, the place was virtually empty which was not a surprise since whenever I drive by no one seems to be in the parking lot. Ordering was a snap as it tends to be in places like this especially when they don't have any customers. I knew I wasn't down for one of their "papa" hamburgers or their chicken burgers, but their fish burger was something I could get behind of, I ordered that with a side of onion rings because onion rings are always prepared better than French Fries when given an option. Of course, to down my meal I had to order a large sized Root Beer Float. It's a shame there is no combination meal that features any one of the three items I ordered, if there was I would have been on it! After all, the fish burger with cheese cost $5.49, the onion rings cost $3.59 and the root beer float $4.59 and for fast food that bill sure adds up. My meal was small but sufficed, the fish burger was slightly above average, better in size than McDonald's but not as tasty as say Carls Jr. Same for the onion rings, fresh from the fryer and hot to the touch, you can't complain about uniformity. Of course, I loved my root beer float, when you drink it there, they give it to you in a beautiful chilled beer glass, and what I didn't know until too long of a time later is that they have a root beer spigot, by the soda fountain area, where you can continuously add to your float. I do wish they used real ice cream instead of what is basically soft serve ice cream because, trust me, there is a difference. And since they're giving away the root beer, feel free to ask if you can have some sort of to-go cup to keep the good times rolling on your way home. Who knows maybe your server is a generous person and will give you one! Another tip is just order a root beer float to go and drink up as much as you can there and fill it for the road! We love this A&W not only for it's central location that even has an atrium dining area, but with an unlocked restroom on the side for anyone to use without being a customer, it makes for the ultimate road stop (clean or not). And then there's a curio of A&W branded swag for you to add to your road stop collection of collectibles. Who knew they had mugs and figurines that you never knew you wanted but always had to buy! Americana. The word that came to mind. Coming to this area, most visitors seek fine dining and, of course, wine destinations. After all, how many Michelin star chefs set up shop within twenty miles?! After a fabulous breakfast, I walked back to my motel and watched some college football before dozing off a couple hours later. My relative's wedding ceremony commenced at 4 pm so around 1 pm, I decided to get some light bites since dinner was likely around 7 pm. First, I should have ordered a large soda and bought the mug that comes with it... would have made a nice souvenir of this trip. I also noticed on the sweets side of the menu the words Polar Swirl. I enjoyed this so much that I recommended that my friend and his group who performed at the wedding to stop here for dinner on the way back to the Bay Area. Omg. So rude. I drove through the line. Barely could hear the person on the mic. Went up to a dirty window that was all taped up with a black paper bag and I could barely sew if anyone was in there. The clerks had their back to the window. Never opened the window. Had to go through the line all over again. Waiting now for another car. So when I went to the window. Asked about the situation. And manager Eric said do you want it or not and slammed the window shut. Then had to bang on the window that he slammed in my face know figured well after all that might as well get the hot dog which was cold and on a stale bun. I realize everyone is short but someone needs to check out what's happening there. Eric nor do his staff seem to give 2 cents about basic customer service. read more

I really enjoy eating at this A&W because of how nostalgic I feel when I visit. It takes me back to what burger restaurants used to be, even before I started enjoying them. Yes, this is fast food and I'm sure that the quality was much better back in the day, but it's a nice changeup to everything else you find in St. Helena. It's also much more cost effective and you can fulfill a sweet-tooth craving with a float or soft serve. The ambiance is fun with Americana posted all throughout the restaurant walls and it's very clean. I have always found the staff to be friendly and quick when I come in. This is a nice restaurant for a retro experience. Usually LOVE this place, with great service and amazing food. Last time a went there, however, the lady who served me was really out of focus and rude. I tried to order root beer, but the "machine was broken". Went in and out of service the whole time I was there. The best things on the menu are the onion rings, chili dog, mushroom burger, and cheese curds. Love the root beer tap. A&W has become a tradition me and le bf. Whenever we spend a day in the Napa area tasting wine, we start early in the morning and stop by this A&W location for lunch to soak up all the alcohol we consumed earlier that day. We always split: 1. Root beer float in the glass mug 2. Papa burger 3. Side sampler (fries, onion rings, cheese curds, and mini corn dogs) The root beer float is always huge with a huge helping of soft serve on top. I feel like everybody has to get one of these. The papa burger is pretty decently sized and tastes good. We don't always finish all of our sides, but my favorite are the fries and the fried cheese curds. I don't see many places selling fried cheese curds in California, so if they are on the menu, you bet I'll order them. There has never been a line longer than 2 people deep when I've come. The service is always friendly and prompt. We might go to some very fancy wineries, but you can bet that we will always stop here for some delicious fast food. read more

"A&W is now serving breakfast!!!" is what Good Morning Bob! loudly announces on 99.3 The Vine. I had enjoyed biscuits&gravy the day before, so I went for the egg&bacon biscuit. Their posted menu is unclear about it. It's too bad they don't have combo meals that serve tater tots, since they do look good. Their egg&bacon biscuit was a deal at $6, along with their Thirsty Bear Coffee. The coffee was refreshing, considering the busy day before&I was headed to Calistoga. They have a cute little mini-museum, and A&W is celebrating its centennial this year (so this would make them older than McD's??) Their biscuits are hot&freshly buttered, and they have delicious bacon. Their breakfast is worth the hype. read more

Look, this is Napa. We come here for the foie gras and the cabernet. AND the root beer made with 100% real cane sugar. OK, well that last part is for some of us. If you've traveled a bit around this valley, you know that once you're north of the Napa town line, you've entered the Siberia of fast food and most other national chains of any variety. Except for Restoration Hardware coming to Yountville with a wine bar, but that's another story. This spot in St. Helena is a bit of an oasis in that regard. I know I just moved from frozen tundra to desert, but bear with me, the point is, as fast food goes, these folks work hard to give you a good experience and great mini corn dogs among the many other treats and there's no other chain for miles around doing anything like this. One thing I must point out is that the current (Autumn 2015) management is completely on top of keeping this location clean and in doing hands-on training with staff. The staff here is friendly, the root beer tops, and you can ring the bell on your way out to demonstrate your approval. If you have a special request, say loading up a Coney Chili Dog with Cheese Curds, they will make it happen for you. Also, if you're looking for some great deals, go ahead and sign up for their text message service. There's indoor and patio seating as well as drive-through service. The grill guys are great and you really get the feeling that the staff knows how to work together as a team and get things done.
