Their Eggrolls here are really good and very crispy and the meat inside is so delicious and very well seasoned, I tried all their Banh Mi here too and everything was good so far. The only thing I have not tried here is their desserts , looking forward to try them next time. These egg rolls are incredible--truly one of a kind, and you won't find anything like them anywhere else. The wrapper is perfectly bubbly and crispy, and the filling is packed with savory umami from the pork and vermicelli noodles. Even the dipping sauce is so good I could drink it. WELL, more like INconvenient. The tiny parking lot in this plaza was a hotmess. People double parking, moving trucks blocking the exit, people not knowing how to park. It's small and super crammed. I was fortunately to get quick parking. As u walked inside I saw "CASH ONLY" and walked around the plaza asking if there was an ATM anywhere near by. There is NOT. So I got back in my car and drove several blocks to the Arco (on Fairmont & El Cajon) to get cash (didn't use ATM but buy something and then pull cash for $1.50 fee). Then went back to the plaza and deal with the annoying parking fiasco. Upon entry there were many people waiting for their orders or in line about to order. It also is super crammed inside. I was in a mission to be in and out. Grabbed the last pre-prepped Spring Rolls and a Coconut Pie (2 mini pieces). :: FOOD :: BANG XEP DUA (Coconut Pie) - cute two little pies. But they were dry AF. Not really sure why this place has decent stars. I've lived down the street from this place for over a decade and I've gone to this place a handful of times a limg time ago. I drive by this place on my way to eat hoai hue. Hoai hue BTW is excellent. Best bun bo hue in San diego. You know when you get an INTENSE CRAVING that you just can't curb?! This was me just a few days ago, when I got this unshakeable sensation of NEEDING a Bahn mi. As I always do, I hopped on Yelp, searched for a spot that was nearby, and chose A-Chau as my foodie-adventure of the day. I walked into this "mom and pop" kinda shop and was delighted to see an extensive menu of Bahn mi's with a variety of proteins! The only Bahn mi sandwich option I wish they would've had on their menu would be a tofu Bahn mi (I'm a FEEN for a solid tofu Bahn mi). After I placed my order, I sat in the dining area and took a visual gander of the place. I noticed quite a few locals pop in for a bite, which to me, indicated I made a solid choice. After a few minutes of waiting, my order was ready! Packaged up beautifully to-go, warm to the touch, and smelling DELICIOUS! I had ordered the S10 Ham Combo Sandwich as well as the S4 Chicken Sandwich (one for the moment and the latter for lunch the next day). I left it up to chance on which I'd try first, which ended up being the Ham Bahn mi. It was delight at first bite! The baguette was crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside, and paired every so beautifully with the simple ingredients of ham, cucumbers, pickled veggies, jalapeños, and cilantro. SOO GOOD. I especially favored how there was a good amount of jalapeños, as I LOVE me a kick of spice. The chicken Bahn mi I had the following day was also equally as tasty! I'd say between the two, the ham was my favorite. Next time I'm in the area, I'll definitely be trying something new! Á Châu is one of the institutions in what is now San Diego's Little Saigon District (aka City Heights) that is known for one product... fried rice paper spring rolls. Back in the day, they were as cheap as $0.50 each. The current price is well over $1 apiece. They are fried in batches and kept warm under a heat lamp, but these addicting snacks sell quickly. Besides the unique use of rice paper, the ratio of filling to wrapper was terrific. They were loaded with minced pork meat and veggies. I have found them to be very popular at picnic/potluck events. Besides their signature item, banh mi sandwiches, bun (rice vermicelli), fried chicken wings, and other miscellaneous goods were sold here. The parking lot had limited spaces that were shared with other businesses in the same small plaza. If you come at the wrong time of the day, then it can be a hassle. Also, the char-broiled pork was a bit too fatty. I prefer it when it's a grilled pork *chop.* I did not finish my dish. :( 2. I also ordered a 1/2 dozen egg rolls, of which you have a choice: smooth or bubbly wrapper (same filling). I prefer smooth, which I specified when the server was bagging bubbly. And yet, somehow, I still came home with a bag of the bubbly egg rolls. :( Disappointing. It's just not the same mouth feel. I think the bubbly wrapper is chewier. They give you massive amounts of Cha lua I was so shocked at how thickly cut it was. I'm so happy! Great smear of pate as well. The thickness of the jalapeño surprised me. The dau chua was perfectly pickled and so delicious. The cilantro leaves were big as well and tasted good with the sandwich. Bread is crunchy but not painful, if you know what I mean. Food (4.75/5): Good banh mis -- tasty and they don't skimp on meat portions. My go-to is the dac biet (has pate and a bunch of cold cuts). Where A-Chau really shines though, is their hot bar and grab-and-go items; their options are extensive and very high quality! Their bestsellers are their eggrolls, which are considered the best eggrolls in SD. They come in two types of crispy wrappers (wonton and rice paper) and almost no one simply leaves the deli without getting some. The meat filling is juicy, savory, smoky, and slightly sweet; the wonton exterior is smooth while the rice paper exterior is bubbly. Some other hot bar items worth trying: fried wonton shrimp, fried chicken wings (similar to Phuong Trang's wings, but slightly more sweet), the pate-so (flaky meat pie, one of my favorite Viet foods! They just started offering this last year), and the meatball skewers. Some grab-and-go items worth trying: the chao tom (sugarcane shrimp patty) spring rolls w/ a savory orange dipping sauce (if you're familiar with Brodard, it's similar to their's), xoi man (savory sticky rice. Though the sandwiches were a bit smaller than others I've had, they were nicely stuffed with filling and the baguette was also nicely toasted. I also got 20 rice paper egg rolls. They were very good...crispy, chewy, meaty. Be informed, they only have the fish sauce for dipping but you can buy a bottle of sweet chili sauce to go. !!!CASH ONLY!!! So I came here prior and tried some of their food with a promise I would return to review some more of their food and here I am doing just that! I'd like to start off with how bad the parking is again. Generally speaking if you're coming during Lunch Rush (about 11:00 AM - 1:30 PM) chances are there will be no parking and there will be several cars just hanging out in the middle of nowhere with or without emergency lights on so parking will be absolutely terrible thanks to terrible drivers. I recommend attempting to come outside of those hours as parking is much much easier. Now as for the food, this time around I got more Eggrolls and Fried Rice Rolls (same filling as Eggrolls but made with a Rice Wrapper rather than Egg Wrapper), a Pate Chaud (In vietnamese pronounced Pate So), and a Banh Mi Nem Nuong (labeled in english as Meatball, but will sometimes be called meatloaf or sausage at other places). - Egg/Rice Rolls. Good just like last time, can recommend both, just depends on your preference of the wrapper. - Pate Chaud: Surprisingly good, you can tell they were made/formed in-house as opposed to other places that clearly just purchase pre-formed pastry shells. The filling to pastry ratio is very good, again another indicator that they form them in-house. For the uninitiated, the Pate Chaud are the golden squareish pastries here which are an antiquated french name for a meat pie that literally translates to "hot pate". I say antiquated because the french terminology has changed and only the vitnamese use Pate Chaud in this way now (and no, it isn't meant to be Pate Choux if you you're wondering). The outside is generally Puff Pastry and the innards are usually a sausage-tasting pork mix or, rarely, chicken mix. All in all, taste and texture wise it's much more like a sausage roll with the difference being that these are traditionally enclosed on all sides like a meat pie. - Banh Mi Nem Nuong. Good, but not spectacular. They're relatively generous with their meat portions, but the meat itself, the Nem Nuong, isn't particularly flavorful. Sad thing is, I think if you purchase a pre-mixed frozen batch from the grocery store, it tastes better than here. So I can't say I'd necessarily recommend the Banh Mi Nem Nuong. The issue of meat to mayo to veggies/pickles balance leaves much to be desired and it really doesn't give me the taste balance I'm looking for when purchasing Banh Mi. I'd say in terms of price point this place's Banh Mi are good, but a place like K Sandwiches has the flavor combination I'd expect of going out to purchase Banh Mi. i'd call the sandwiches here to be more "homestyle" and traditional, but that's not what I'm really looking for if I'm paying for it as I'd rather just purchase the ingredients and make them myself at that point. Overall I don't think I'll return specifically for the Banh Mi. If you haven't tried Bale French Sandwiches yet and think this is the best in the area, I highly recommend attempting Bale French Sandwiches' BBQ Pork Sandwich (which is their equivalent of Nem Nuong). I'd definitely say this is the second best sandwich place in the area, but there isn't really much competition in the area as opposed to in Orange County or even in Mira Mesa. Is it a bad choice for sandwiches? No. But I'd choose it specifically just for the price, but honestly would rather go to K Sandwiches if I had to choose between the two. The Egg/Rice Rolls and Pate Chaud here are on point and I would definitely return for them. I'd wager they have the best of both in the area from a price, taste, and texture point. My first time here, they are the nicest people ever! I asked about their famous egg rolls, and they very quickly pointed me in the right direction (there are two types and one is very popular). Just while I was waiting for my Bahn Mi sandwiches to be thoughtfully prepared three more customers walked in and all three purchased egg rolls by the dozen. I had no idea how popular this restaurant was! I did take out but you can also eat inside as well at a few. Ice and very clean tables. There are a wide variety of Bahn Mi choices and we settled on the Charbroiled Pork and the Chicken. Next time I will try the Ham as I hear it's very delicious. Everything was so good!!!
