3-4 Stars. Came here for dinner and the workers are really kind, but they messed up (the kitchen) on a few orders. I noticed we ordered the Crispy Noodle with Beef and they brought out Crispy Noodle Vegetarian Style. They went to fix it, but in the end brought out the same thing but with a FEW pieces of beef on top. This is supposed to be a beef forward noodle dish, but sadly it had more mushrooms and carrots. For three of our dishes, it had the same sauce on it. So basically we were eating the same thing but in different fonts. The Iced Vietnamese Coffee (Ca Phe Sua Da) tasted thin and too strong. I wouldn't get this again. Instead, I recommend the Sugar Cane Drink. The Fried Crispy Fish was good! The Tofu Soup wasn't bad when paired with rice. One of my childhood restaurants growing up! My family dines here for the dishes we can't recreate at home, such as their BBQ rice dishes (Com Tam), vermicelli noodles (bun), and thick noodle soup (banh canh). They have a pretty good selection of shakes as well and Vietnamese Iced Coffee. I go here to get their avocado shake and coconut shake. They used to have a wider selection of shakes but have cut down the menu by half. They have Thai tea and Vietnamese coffee that is decent from surrounding restaurants. Nhu Y is one of the oldest spots on El Cajon Blvd that serves truly authentic Vietnamese food. You know it's authentic when there's a crowd gathered outside the restaurant of Vietnamese people playing games on the table too (lol). However there were flies bothering us during our meal, plastic(?) string in the food, and overall the restaurant felt a little sticky and messy with all their supplies stacked in a corner. Food was subpar, with the vermicelli noodles being all broken up when served and overall just lacking flavor. All this just worsened by the generally uncomfortable atmosphere of the staff gathered and shouting obscenities at a sports game in an otherwise empty restaurant. There are much better Vietnamese restaurants in San Diego at similar price points, and I would suggest going somewhere else. (They did make a good viet iced coffee though) read more

got the chicken banh canh and the meat one that came with shrimp and pork. it's so hard to find banh canh in san diego and they do it so well! i believe they used the same broths for both types and it was a really yummy savory chicken based (i think) broth. i was impressed with how good it was!! deep in flavor and seasoned well! the noodles were cooked well and didn't fall apart like other places i've had. perfect chewiness and so yum! i was really impressed by the pork, it was cooked so well! no weird pork tastes (which i am really sensitive to). the veggies it came with were all pretty fresh and my lime was juicyyy, affordable prices were reasonable! read more

My childhood friend's mom would make Ca Kho for us & I loved it! I have been trying to find a restaurant that serves this & was excited to see that they served it here. We came during lunch time & it was just us dining. However, be aware of the parking since it is in a strip mall. The parking was packed, the spots are extremely tight & the side streets were filled too. They do not serve a variety of pho dishes like the other Vietnamese restaurants I have been to. They only serve a few & concentrate on other Vietnamese cuisines, which was nice to see what else is out there. Pho: Sadly, we did not enjoy this. The broth was super bland, the beef was tough, & the noodles seemed over cooked. Ca Kho: & unfortunately, this was just okay. This is my go to spot for delicious rice plates, noodles, and Vietnamese comfort meals. This restaurant literally serves up everything you can think about when thinking of Viet food! The rice plates are always great with a succulent grilled porkchop laid over a beautiful bed of broken rice laced with a fried egg and fresh thin slices of cucumbers and tomatoes and a side of broth garnished beautifully with green onions and cilantro. They also serve some great street food such as pork skewers that are o so tasty with a lovely blend of bell pepper and onions, and they have freshly made pandan waffles that are so freshly crisp and flavorful with a ooey gooey pull to them when biting into them. They have a nice assorted arrangement of boba teas and my all time favorite the avocado smoothie blended with condensed milk to balance the sweetness to the bold flavorful fresh avocado. Overall Nhu Y is the spot to go to for your Com tam needs where you will get a nice sized porkchop with all the veggies and a nice side of complimentary broth. This place can get crowded but service is second to none when dealing with customers getting them in and out. There's a new monthly event called Saigon Nights. One of the event coordinators asked if I had some students who could take photos of the event. During this pandemic, I was surprised that two students agreed to show up. It is a fun concept with a number of the restaurants open for dining inside or out. After they took their photos and I took them home, I came back for takeout. I am not a Vietnamese food expert by any means, so I ordered the Cha gio (egg rolls), mi xao gionhoac mem (chicken chow mein), com chien bo heo hoac ga (pork fried rice), and the bun thit nuong (char-broiled pork with rice vermicelli). I was actually looking for the bun with chicken and egg rolls which I usually get at other places but I didn't see it. I guess I could've asked, next time. Everything was great! The egg rolls came with lettuce leaves and mint and dipping sauce...soo good! The noodles and rice hit the spot! And I liked the pork over vermicelli. Good size portions and it lasted a couple of days, except the egg rolls. The staff was very friendly and I would definitely come back. This is my new spot! I have the same dish at dozens of restaurants. The quarantine + economic Downturn has caused a lot of my usual Vietnamese spots to alter recipes or sub iceberg lettuce for Romain and it makes a huge difference. First night I pull into the tiniest parking lot ever. There's an older gentleman on a karaoke mic singing all the Viet classics, with pretty good pitch too. While in San Diego we stopped in for lunch at Nhu Y, since one of our friends know one of the owners. This guy was personally insulting to our friend and disrespectful to the cook/chef. This owner guy accused our friend of colluding with the chef/cook to receive additional food. Besides being a stupid accusation, IT WAS A LIE! This created a very uncomfortable experience for all of us. Three things stood out to me within the first five minutes of my bun rieu arriving: the broth was way too sweet, the noodles were soft, broken, and overcooked, and the amount of rieu was minimal. I understand that the taste of Vietnamese food, for those who grew up with it, can be based on regional upbringing and personal preference. At the same time, a good bowl of any Vietnamese soup should have a good, piping hot, well-balanced broth, noodles that still have a bite to it (like al dente pasta), a good broth to noodle ratio, well-cooked protein, the correct herbs, green, and peppers to accompany the dish. The bun rieu at Nhu Y was lacking in these areas. I had a sip of the bun bo hue and felt the same way about it as well. The food was not bad at Nhu Y. The food came out quickly. The portion was generous. I probably just wouldn't come back for the noodle soups at Nhu Y knowing what their standards are for making Vietnamese noodles soups. read more

First time trying Nhu Y. My parents were nice enough to bring me take out from here and I got the Com Tam Thit Nuong with Tau Hu Ky (Grilled Pork over Broken Rice with Bean Curd Wrapped Shrimp). The best part of the dish was the grilled pork. It was nicely cooked, well seasoned, and the pieces of meat weren't too fatty or dry. I thought that the Tau Hu Ky was pretty unique compared to other restaurants I've tried as well. It had a less prominent shrimp flavor which wasn't necessarily a bad thing. It definitely still tasted like shrimp but you could taste the pepper and other spices mixed in which is honestly not the case for some of the other places I've tried. Overall, this was one of the better broken rice dishes I've eaten. I can't speak for what the dine in experience is like since I haven't physically been to Nhu Y, but if I'm ever in the area, I'd be happy to stop by for a meal! read more

Out of the back of the shrimp they were out of Diet Coke and they were out of regular tea hot tea. It was $14 for the vermicelli and my roommate had Pho she said it was OK on her meal but nothing exciting and it was also $14 and it was chicken space PHO. I haven't been here in 15 years back then it was a pretty good restaurant so use your own judgment but I would recommend any of the 100 other Vietnamese restaurants like the one across the street or Saigon or somewhere near to here read more

We tried the spring roll, egg rolls, egg crepe, bun bo hue, and bun mum. The rolls are stuffed full with meat & fresh vegetables. Egg crepe was crispy and not oily. Bun mum is my favorite, it got pork belly, shrimp, fish, eggplant, and a mix of fresh veggies to add in. This soup noodle is not for everyone if you're not use to the strong shrimp paste favor then it can be very stinky lol. One of the downside is parking. First time checking this place out. Fast service and no wait. Very casual Vietnamese place. I ordered the sizzling beef cubes with rice and it was tender, juicy, and very buttery. It wasn't the best Bo Luc Lac I've tried, BUT it's still good. I think I was looking for more of the marinade taste in the beef vs just tasting butter all the way. The beef was soaking in melted sizzling butter. I also ordered an iced Vietnamese coffee. It was too strong for my tasting so we kindly ask to add more condensed milk, but when I got my coffee back, they didnt add more condensed milk but a creamer with hazelnut flavor.
