I have been rebuilding a 1974 Porsche and 1988 BMW in my home garage. So I have been over at A-German many many time in the past two years. The owner, Max, has been very helpful and his prices are great. Recently, I brought in my 1990 Volkswagon in for transmission service. Max checked it out thourghly, and in the end, told me that the unit was fine and that I did not need to spend any money having it rebuilt. That was a pleasent surprize. Now I have the confidance to take the vehical on a long trip, and I did not have to pay for a major repair. Great place for old Mercedes parts. Came in to buy a hard-to-find wiper motor. They tested the motor before selling it and even tested my bad one. The employee then told me how to repair the old one so I have a backup and let me keep it for free (no core charge). Very satisfied and will come back again. read more

I took my older BMW here for a radiator replacement. The guys were quick I had the car back the same afternoon. The only problem I noticed were some little drips the next morning under the car. When I checked the fluids, the new radiator was almost empty. I guess that happens when you don't tighten the hose clamps. I was lucky I noticed that before I did a lot of driving and really screwed up my car. Thanks guys, but I think I'll keep shopping around for a better garage. To be fair, the upside of the place is they do have good prices on originally BMW parts. I will be back for that as their prices are about the same as some of the parts I've bought online, they just won't be working on my car. read more

Awesome! Had my son's GTI at another VW specialty shop for over a month because it wouldn't start. I called and spoke with them about a part the other shop could not locate, they did not have it, but told me where I could find it in San Jose (from a competitor)! Asked them how much we'd be charged to diagnose the GTI's problem, 1 1/2 hours of labor max . . had it towed that afternoon and it was fixed before noon the next day! read more

If you own a german car, this is the place for any mechanical work, and also body work (they subcontract the body work: goos work, and good prices too!). My check engine light came on all of a sudden on my Mercedes. After going to a dealer and another spot that wanted to charge me 300$ just to figure out the problem, I stumbled upon these guys. Nice family run operation. The owner was super nice and easy going, unlike other shops which make you feel like you're inconveniencing them by bringing them business. Long story short, it was a simple sensor and the price was very reasonable and I was out of there in no time. They could've easily taken advantage of me in this situation...I was expecting a 1k dollar fix. Luckily they're an honest business and I won't hesitate to bring my car back here if I have any issues(hopefully I won't have any issues lol). Thanks again. read more

I used to have an old Mercedes and still have my vw beetle. I've had nothing but good experience with this place. I had a ignition problem where I just had change a part that only cost me $75. Another mechanic wanted to charge me $300 to change the same part that was replace like a fuse. A 5 second job. I also got a door for my vw for a really cheap price too. read more

Ridiculous. Was quoted $60 for a high pressure steering hose for my car. Was told by Arnold that part would be here by noon. I waited until 1pm to go in to make sure my part would be there already. Went in and they ordered the wrong part!! Furthermore when I asked for the price of the correct hose, the owner wanted to charge me triple the price of online!! I understand that shops usually charge 25-30% markup, but trying to charge me triple the price is very unreasonable and not the way to do business at all. I used to come here for all of my emergency repair parts that I needed the same day but not anymore after they tried charging me over $200 for a $60 part. I will never use these guys again and I suggest you do the same. P.S. these guys only work on really old German cars. They don't have the newest equipment or computers so I wouldn't even bother bringing your new car here. Maybe if it's already 30 years old then yes they will have the ability to work on it read more

I was having trouble finding a part for my japanese SUV. Max (the owner) found the part for me on the same day I called. However, later when I tried to install it, the part was slightly larger, so the specs were off. I tried to return the part, but Max said that he will make it right for me, and wanted to locate the correct one. After a few days, he found it, and gladly exchanged the part. I am very impressed. I've been driving a 2002 VW Jetta that has minor over-heating and transmission issues. 4 years ago, I took my car to 2 different mechanics where I was told that I should either sell the car or spend close to 4500 (which even then was more than my car was worth) fortunately I brought it here for a last advice where I was told that aside from minor fixable issues, this car is in a descent shape and if I maintain it properly it's going to serve me for another few years. Since then, I bring my car here for yearly maintenance. Every time I receive detailed explanation on the issues - if there are any as well as an itemized bill that shows how much am I spending for parts and labor. The staff are professional, honest, and fair. I'm giving them 5 starts for their great service, honest work, and fair pricing. read more

Overpriced, poor communication I searched this place's online inventory and it showed two instance of the part I needed but with no price listed. I called first to ask for the price (because I had gone there in person once before and been shocked at how overpriced their parts were). The guy mumbled a lot and I often couldn't understand what he was saying on the first try. After having to ask him to repeat himself several times, he still made no effort to speak clearly. IMO if you are going to deal with customers over the phone you need to be willing to speak up and enunciate your words. Finally, he told me they did not have the part I needed. I said that their online inventory showed two of them so they might look into updating it if they are gone, to which he replied "I cannot find in computer". Well, they still show up in their database when I look, now, so I guess this guy didn't want to make a sale badly enough to look very hard. His loss. The previous time, when I actually went to this place and ended up finding out how overpriced they are, the guy at the front was pretty rude. Don't deal with this place. Seriously, there are too many other auto salvage places around here to put up with this crap. read more

A-German Auto was one of only a few wreckers in CA to have an evaporator core for my 1997 Eurovan & was the only one willing to go to the trouble to pull it out for me & ship it to me (whole dashboard has to be removed, about 3 hrs labor). I had to initiate a few calls to stay in touch but they got the part out & shipped it to me overnight. Part was very well packed. I will not hesitate to use them again if the need arises. read more

I recently had problems with my transmission and was nervous to take it anywhere for fear of what the outcome would be. My dad recommended Max at A-German and I can tell you I have never felt more confident leaving my car with someone. Max and his team took care of my car and I could not be happier! If I could give them zero stars I would. Horrible horrible service ever! I had taken my 1996 BMW in to get it fixed. I wasn't sure what the problem was but it stopped working on me (wouldn't turn on anymore) They had my car for 2 months straight! They did nothing to my car but only put a hour in a half of work in "as they said" after it's been there awhile with my two front windows rolled down and it's been raining. Pretty messed up for them to do!! They only had called me once out of the whole time they had my car to tell me their working on it and it be done in a few weeks. Well Those few weeks passed I never heard from them. So then I called to see what's going on yet they tell me the same thing we are still working on it. I was like okay I'll give them more time with my car to see whats going on with it cause this is my only car I have and my first so I really wanted it to get fixed. Well more weeks passed then I decided to just show up and check my car and see what's really going on. I go in and I see four employees just standing there in the office doing nothing didn't seem busy at all. I ask them what's going on with my car and they said there working on three other cars!!??? My car was there way before Those three cars! And not just that but no one was working on a car when I stoped by. I notice my car is outside all the way in the back surrounded by other cars hard to get to if you where "supposedly working on it". No one was giving me answers still and to notice my car windows where down I asked them to roll them up and they said they would. Now I gave them a week to see if they can figure out the problem. I've called plenty of times and no answers STILL!!!! I mean if you can't fix it or have time to they should have let me know so I can take it to someone who can and not waste my time and note I did call way before I dropped my car off to see if they could work on my type of car and told them what happened and they said bring it in, so it's not like I just dumped my car on them for them to do this to me! So I came back to get my car towed out no answers once again. they really didn't even seem to care at all. One of the workers comes up to me and says why you taking it I can fix it!!??? Are you serous! after it's been siting here for two months now you wanna help. These people are jokes. Also when I was there getting my car towed out a customer was there talking to an employee and I guess he's car was in the way and another employee with a very rude tone of voice said move your car now to the customer, I was in shock, and one of the employees was taking crap in Spanish thinking I didn't know what he was saying! Well sir I did. Don't ever waste your time coming here.I don't even see how there still in business and have all these nice yelp reviews. These people are rude, waste of time!!! Please Don't waste your money coming here!!! Also to top it off my windows where still rolled down when I came to pick my car up it was raining that day and other times it's been there. everything in my car was wet and damage! I didn't even give them my car like that with the windows down , I don't even know why they rolled them down in the first place. I asked them to roll them up when I first came by and they said they would!!! If they couldn't do it they should have called me and let me know or put something over my windows. Negative five stars. Dishonest. I searched all over town and online for two fuel injectors for a 1985 BMW 535i. Found 6 on Ebay for $55 but didn't want to wait because needed car running ASAP. Thought I had found two at Pick N Pull for $8 a piece but someone already snagged them out of the engine there. And I only needed two to get the car running so was willing to pay the $50 for two at A1 German even though the price was much higher than pick n pull or Ebay. Owner said he had only two injectors that would fit my car. One injector was missing the plastic end cap so I wasn't sure if it would work. I asked for a discount. He refused any discount or return if this incomplete part did not work for me. At this point his mechanic walks by and I ask him if he can fix this injector by swapping the plastic caps from one of my old injectors to this one. He says "no I don't think I could without breaking the plastic cap". The owner still says I cannot return the injector if I can't swap this missing piece. Finally after much haggling over buying this partially incomplete/broken injector with no return logic prevails and he agrees I can return ONLY this one injector if it doesn't work for me. Went back next day and asked for a return and he says he never said I could return it, and insists that he said I could only exchange it. We debated this for 30 minutes the day before before the mechanic saying he didn't think it could be repaired convinced him to agree to a return. He claims he said exchange not return. I insist that he said I could return it. I ask "exchange it for what? I thought you only had two injectors." Then he says no he can exchange it for a complete injector that he has 4 more in the engine! Turns out he has 4 more good ones in the same engine! And he knowingly sold me the only incomplete one. I told him this was a terrible way to do business in front of other customers that he knew I needed to fix my car and he sold me the only incomplete injector when he had 4 more good ones and now he won't even give my money back after he said I could return it! He said at this point in front of other customers "sorry, we will treat you better next time" but still refused any refund. I would never even consider going back to this place after the owner knowingly sold me a broken part that he said I could return and then would not let me. Feel very lucky I was only spending $50! Don't risk giving this place your money. Update: Called and asked to speak to the owner (which I learned was who sold me the injector) to tell him I posted a negative review on Yelp. He got angry and told me I am lying and that he said exchange not refund. My question is even IF you said exchange (which you did not) and this was a simple misunderstanding, how can you explain selling me a broken injector when you knew you had 4 more good ones!? read more
