I had such high expectations based on prior Yelp reviews. Overall, I feel this nail salon is clean and decent quality, but lacks professionalism. I couldn't believe the amount of chatter, snickering, and bad mouthing that went on between the nail technicians during my pedicure. It was so blatant she was making fun of the callus on my heel (sorry, I'm an avid runner and cyclist and paying you to help fix that!). She even called over 2 friends to take a look a made a huge spectacle. I was mortified. Also, the price was $42 for a manicure and pedicure with a 10 minute massage. Manicure and pedicure quality were just OK. My nail beds are quite dry today. The massage was only mediocre. I believe the advertised price for this service combination was quite a bit lower. This place, while the services were nice, is one of the biggest scams I have ever experienced in all of New York. Our experience was so bad that I plan to call the BBB and put a formal complaint in to the NYPD and Consumer Affairs. They post a mani-pedi special for $23, which we selected and sat back to relax into our treatment. Then, they came over while in treatment, showed us a menu of what we could choose, (which we assumed was based on what we'd already agreed on purchasing), and they walked away. The service was nice, but they were constantly pushing more upgrades on us. We both added an extra massage for a total of 30 minutes combined ($30) and when we were given the bill it was $140 which should have been no more than $76+ tip. By the time we ended up paying for everything with tip the bill totalled over $170. RIP-OFF! To make matters worse, after our experience at "pure spa" we sat down to dinner and spoke about what had happened with the price and were both alarmed to find out that what we were charged for wasn't even given to us. I paid the tab trusting the girl at the desk that my partner had indeed ordered what the woman said she had ordered, only to find out that my partner had not requested any upgrades whatsoever, and that I had been lied to about our bill and robbed. I'm aghast and utterly appalled. These people are terrible with slimey ways of doing "business". Last, they didn't even offer or give us a receipt, awful. One positive, the girl who did the pedi was great and sweet, and I was told the same about my partner's technician. read more

Pure Spa how I love thee. Everything is sparkling clean. Calming music, tvs and mags everywhere. Every tech I've had (3 times) has been a gem. Pro tip: they only take tips in cash They have tvs behind the mani stations so there's no hand holding awkwardness. You can catch up on the weather report while getting your cuticles cut. I've gotten the spa pedi and gel mani combo with 10 minute massage and you can opt to have a shoulders and back massage instead of foot. DO IT. I went for a long run that morning and after the 10 minutes massage felt like a new woman. I work around here and actually switched mani places from the UES just to get my nails did here. I'm getting a pedicure for the first time in a LONG time and the lady can't stop shaking her head at my feet. I know it's been a while, but please cool it with the attitude okay? Update 10/22/12: I got my mani/pedi less than a week ago and I have the worst hangnails ever on my fingers. I had a meeting to go to and they looked horrendous. I amend my review to saying I would just go there if I had to for a quick colour change but they do have good customer service. Today I went in for a a regular manicure and pedicure. The place is nice and clean. They have a wide variety of colours to choose from( especially Essie brand) I had brought my own. They were friendly and took me right away. I am sure my coming in at 3pm had something to do with having no wait. The pedicure was not bad, but I felt they don't have the right tools to really scrub your feet. I play a lot of sports and run, so when I go for a pedicure I like to get my feet really scrubbed and buffed. The manicure: same as the pedicure, not bad but their creams are not the most moisturizing. Overall, my nails look great and I would come back just to get my nails repainted or a quick manicure, but if I really want my feet pampered my search continues. I walked by A Pure Spa thinking it would be too expensive by the name and look of it from the outside. I was wrong. This place is cheaper than the cheapest salon in Boston! I've been here a few times for the $23 mani/pedi, it's adequate and clean. Don't expect any callus removal or anything too spectacular. It's pretty basic clean, cuticle/nail length trim, polish. You do get a 5-10 min massage while you're drying which for $23 is a pretty good deal. I'm not sure if the "up selling" has caused any one else issues, but if you go here - make sure you ask if there is an extra charge for anything they offer you. It might save you a bad experience... I had some relatives here visiting and thought we'd try the massages and went for Package 1 ($68 = 1 hr massage, mani/pedi). I called ahead and made an appointment and asked if they could get a longer pedicure instead of the manicure and after a few times trying to explain said yes we could do that. Upon arrival, I again reiterated what we had scheduled and what we wanted. They said OK. The bill comes and it's DOUBLE what we expected. Apparently they try to up sell you while you're face down on the massage table and ask you if you want deep tissue or Swedish - it's $70 per hour for deep tissue. I can't say that I heard that there was an additional charge for deep tissue. This was very upsetting to me and my aunts who are both from small towns and not used to these types of places. I don't know if this how they typically do business but the argument over the bill after a massage and pedicure basically ruined any relaxation we had gained. The manager tried very hard afterwards to appease me, she apologized numerous times and gave me a $20 gift certificate for another day. A decent spot for a quick, cheap manicure to last a couple of days. I wouldn't try the pedicures here, just because I do question whether the tools are properly sterilized. I've had maybe 10 manicures here, and they've been mostly okay, but have gotten progressively worse. They leave you with messy cuticles, rough edges on your nails, and miss spots on your nails. I've had 2 10 minutes massages here. The first, by an older gentleman, was wonderful. The second was by a younger guy (who also gave me the worst manicure ever). I was wearing a sweater, and he put a towel over my back. So basically, all I got was 10 minutes of fabric rubbing awkwardly over my back, since he also didn't use much pressure. Most of the staff is nice, but several are pretty rude, and they do talk about the customers when they thing you don't understand them. read more

I REALLY liked this place! It was extremely clean and well attended, had an excellent selection of colors, and very reasonable prices. There's one reason it gets 4 instead of 5 stars: I opted for the gel mani as it said in the pamphlet that they had outside that they were only $15, but this is NOT SO! When I got my receipt it was for $28+tax, which was indeed reflected on the price list on the wall. I visited this place last week for a quick mani and I was pleaseantly Suprised. I didn't have an apointment and as a walk in was serviced within 5 minutes. They have a great selection of polish and the woman who did my mani was very good and quickly talked me into getting a parifin mani with a 10 min massage. She was thorough and really went to work on my cuticles and gave my nails a nice natural shape. The massage was GREAT if I wasn't in a rush I would have paid for a full body massage. I will say that I saw a couple of the other technicians and they were not as good as the girl I had. There was an older man (only guy there) that was giving a massage and was barely doing anything. I made a mental note to never go to him. The only negative is the manicure didn't last long. I usually bring my own nail polish and top coats to any salon, mainly bc salons will dilute the polish instead of purchasing new ones when they get low. I will definitely be brining my own to this salon. Within 3 days the mani started to chip and it's been one week as of today and it looks horrendous. Some nails dont even have color anymore. My nails easily chip but I believe that thier top coat was the problem. Other than that, I like this place. In NY, pretty much anyone can open up a nail shop and good ones are not easy to come by. This place was clean, with a nice ambiance and they have a plethora of services to choose from for any price range. I honestly haven't been here in 6 months, so sorry if things have changed, this review it delayed. However, I just got an overpriced manicure elsewhere and was kicking myself for not just coming back here instead, because I actually really like this nail salon. I've only been here twice, so I can't speak to the consistency that some other people complain about, but the prices are very affordable for the quality you get. I honestly don't actually get a lot of manicures, maybe once a year, and so when I do I've had some bad experiences (painful, uneven, overpriced). I went here first with two friends as a girl's day and we all loved it - great deal for a mani/pedi combo and they were very thorough. Then I went back on my own for a birthday manicure (picture) and expected it to be a little more expensive, since I got somewhat of a design, but it was still very affordable. The girl was incredibly accommodating, as I tried about 4 different colors before settling on two that looked well together, which I appreciated, and she didn't charge extra for. So I went here to get a simple nail change since one of my nails had broke. I went in and showed one of the women what all my other nails looked like, and idk what she saw but she completely got it wrong and made the only nail she had to do look horrible. The changed nail wasn't the same shape or color, and she was rushing to get my nail done like she had somewhere to go. Even with all the things that happened she still seemed upset with the tip I gave her even though she ruined my nail and made it look out of place. I'm not the one who typically write bad reviews but today is the day. If only I can give zero stars. Came in for a spa day with my boyfriend's sister and seems like we walked in to a busy place, well understandbly since it's a weekend. Long story short, my boyfriend's sister were sitted for a pedicure and her feet was soaked in the water for 2 minutes before finally get the process done. I went to get a coffee and when I got back, I was sitted for my pedicure and waited for about 15 minutes to have someone do my pedicure which I'm fine about, the owner helped and get the water started for my feet to soaked in but I was left for another 5 minutes. She came back to clip my nails, file it as immediate as she can and left me again. Then I was pass along with another girl to finish it; she also rushes my pedicure and my toe nails were not filed in the shape that I wanted. Moreover, when she's about to proceed painting my nails I stopped her and asked if she can file it for me, she then asked if I want round or square, I said round is fine. It was so frustrating that I have to point out what has to be done which left me unsatisfied and the work is so terrible (picture provided) that I will never ever go back to this place again. My boyfriend's sister was very kind to pay for my manicure and pedicure that I end up not getting the manicure done. It sucks. I hope that nobody experience this type of ordeal. read more

This location is super convenient to my apt but I'm not happy with their customer service. I always get acrylic / gel nails depending on what the specific salon offers. Recently, they went up $15 dollars. When I'm too lazy to travel for a cheaper price, I'll come here. The price for a full set was $45 and I gave a 3 dollar tip. The woman who did my nails looked at the receipt, wasn't happy with the tip amount and change the 3 to an 8 RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME. She smiled at then showed me. I was completely baffled and I know you could see it on my face. The nails were nice but not for $53. I'm lucky if my nails don't chip just a few hours of having them done here. To make it worse, I have to TELL them when they've missed a spot and need to add more polish. Also, when taking off the nails, an Asian man who had no idea what he was doing did it. He had me sitting for an hour soaking my nails (I kid you not, I had a friend there with me) and after the hour he said they were still not ready to be taken off. Once they so called were, he used the tip of a metrocard to take them off. Are you serious? Why am I paying over $50 when I could use my own metrocard to take off my nails? I'm not a cheap person by any means. I used to come here all the time even after the raise of $15 on nails, but I absolutely refuse. Don't go here. I know you need a quick polish change or whatever, and that the majority of nail salons in Chelsea are mildly overpriced. Quality - Very subpar. I honestly could have painted my own nails better and not gotten polish all over my cuticles - in the dark. Cleanliness - All tools: cuticle cutters, pushers, orange sticks sat on dirty steel trays with other's people's skin, dust, and who-knows-what. Tools did not come sanitized to my knowledge. By this point, I should have left but I was literally knee deep in the experience. Had to power through. Service - I have never been treated this badly, ever. The girls talked crap about me and my friend the ENTIRE time I was there in Chinese. Sorry ladies, but I am Chinese so I DO understand you. At first, I just ignored the somewhat innocent condescending comments. However, they straight up started going full force after I was forced to pay and tip (I did a FAIR 15% for the service they gave, and that was GENEROUS at that) before my manicure was done. Joyce (her name) complained that I must have been an idiot for taking my time with the check, my feet were jacked, I was cheap, and later said "look at this chick and the way she's dressed - she must think she's SO HOT". I had to stop her there, and explain to her that I understood everything she was saying to her friend. No apologies, just a smirk in reply. To you Joyce, I say "Yes, I am hot shit". Ya BISH? To conclude, don't come here. They're dirty, rude, and do a horrible job. You can pay 8 bucks more to go down the street to any other salon and get 100x more value for your money. read more

I had a gel mani from an older man and he really messed up my nail beds. he also didn't use the color I wanted. it was too hard to tell in the lighting it wasn't the correct dark shade. I realized as soon as I walked out into the sunlight. they do not use any cuticle lotion here so he did a really terrible job on cuticles and my finger nail beds hurt really bad and are so swollen 3 days later because of how he filed or something. Disappointed, Yelpers! This is not a good salon. I came here one time for a regular powder tip. First, I've never seen the nail tech dip your nail into the powder & shake it off. Out of all the times I've had my nail done (hundreds) throughout the years, they've used a brush to apply the powder. This dip & shake technique was out of the norm & clearly one that didn't work because ALL 10 of my nails had fallen off within the same week. I called them about a refund, again within that same week, & they told me to come in. I came in & two ladies (I assume the owner & her daughter) stood over me arguing about what happened & how to handle the situation. The older lady said they couldn't do anything (while looking at my receipt) because it had been 10 days, despite my call 2 days prior. After waiting another 10-15 minutes, the young lady looked in the book & finally saw my information had been written down & mentioned I did call & was in the book from a couple days ago. The older lady pointed me out to the lady that originally did my nails. She quickly rushed over to me & started inspecting my nails before saying something g about it not being her work. Ten minutes later the 2 of them were telling me I had to pay half price in order to replace the nails that had fallen off. I refused- I wasn't paying for what was apparently horrible work in the first place. I walked out as they were talking about the next steps. Maybe if I would've stayed there waiting for them to make a "final" decision things would've resulted differently, but I was disgusted by this whole situation. I will never go back there. It is horribly sad when you don't/won't stand by your work, no matter how BAD it is. The idea that I paid the first time & included my regular $10 tip & then was expected to pay again one week later for the same probably horrible again job is ridiculous.
