Came here for a private party that they hosted in a small detached back room behind the main restaurant. It had a very old school mid-20th century feel to it. Dark and intimate setting but very elegant. There was a party of 10-15 of us there for a private event so we had our own pre selected menu of appetizer, soup/salad, entree with sides, and dessert. Every course was absolutely amazing. I chose the butter leaf wedge salad that was accompanied with maple bacon that was delightful. For the main course I had Mary's Organic Chicken that was dressed with capers and turnips. The skin of the chicken was crisp and not oily and the meat was juicy and tender. My colleague got the Filet Mignon which I tried and was cooked to perfection. Dessert of vanilla ice cream and cheesecake was heavenly and I'm not a person that's usually into sweets! The restaurant is located beautifully off PCH but can be hard to miss due to the traffic in the area, so look for a large "A" sign. Sadly, I am posting another negative review on extremely disrespectful and rude doorman Kimo who still works at A Restaurant. I am a single petite female, busy respectable professional & business owner, single mother of an adopted child, caretaker of an older parent, rarely drink and don't use drugs. I have a great reputation in the area, many friends, lived in Orange County for over 30 years, traveled to over 50 countries, and never experienced this level of rudeness & disrespect by the same restaurant employee. Last night, I stopped by this establishment to join my friends near the bar area and immediately was asked to sit on a vacant bar stool by a guest who, as I thought, did not need it anymore. I did not want to sit down to begin with as I enjoyed mingling with my friends; however, did it to please a friendly female guest (who I did not know) who kept asking me to sit on her chair. Shortly after I sat down facing away from the bar, I heard Kimo's voice behind my back who was yelling at me at the top of his lungs across the entire bar requesting to get off the stool. As I was trying to figure out why he was yelling which only took a few seconds, Kimo continued to yell at me standing across the bar that if I don't get up right now, he will ask me to leave. Everyone was shocked how rude this doorman was to me for no reason. Instead of talking to me in a calm respectful matter to resolve this simple matter, he was yelling at me like I was a disobedient inmate in a maximum security prison. He is known to raise his voice frequently to regular guests and offended many of my friends, who are also respectable local residents in Newport Beach spending a lot of money at this establishment. Because of Kimo, I don't enjoy going to this restaurant, but visit there to join my friends, since many of them live local and go there regularly. Most of my friends despise Kimo and also find him consistently rude and disrespectful. I am aware that restaurant management received many complaints due to his attitude and can't believe he still works there. Apparently, this upscale establishment allows Kimo to overstep his boundaries, insult guests, especially petite non-confrontational females, and chose who he lets in the restaurant based on his personal preference. Like after last night's incident when I was on my way out, Kimo was yelling standing at the door that he will not let me back in, ever! Unbelievable! Who does he think he is??? There are many other options to replace him with respectful security personnel this place should have. read more

First time there for dinner. Drink selection for mixed drinks was excellent and we tried several. Drinks were seasonal and excellent. The appetizers we tried were spicy tuna that was the best we ever had. Very nicely done with flavors. The cauliflower steak appetizer had nice vegetables over the top and was a good appetizer but nothing can top the tuna. I tried the Friday special. The menu changes we were told. Chicken pot pie was different thing to have and the crust was outstanding. The chicken was excellent once you got through the crust. Even though I enjoyed, I would not get again as I tried the filet mignon and it was fantastic. My wife loved the scallops. I forget the 4th dish but food was great. I do try the garlic soup as I never had it and I like garlic. I really enjoyed it, but you better like garlic. Service was excellent. Classically Tragic since 1926..." the new "F" Restaurant - used to be "A Restaurant", as it's now known in social circles, is named after the many F bombs delivered by its own uncool dude-in-charge in an effort to be OC's finest customer service poster child...it gets better, read on... Our special event was an anniversary dinner with invited friends. We agreed our food was just average/par for the A-to-F course except we liked our sterling server who tried her darndest to fight the long typical Friday food-to-your-table delays. When we finally received our steaks, I immediately called my mother-in-law to come with her old electric knife and a long extension cord. I figured we could get through it with that kind of help so long as I had the ability to lean into it...you know, some leverage. I would recommend this if you order any filet but pick off the roasted garlic first...it's good. You and your body guard will thank me. Wwwwhat... did we say bodyguard?...hold on... When dinner is done and paid ($690 including niceties to our server for her hard work trying to boost the culinary experience over a night out at Denny's), we try to forget the marginal rest-on-it's-laurels food and better our evening at the bar. Hard to mess that up, right?...ahh, keep reading... We order a night cap and not even a few sips in and we see action stirring all around the bar. A fight brewing? Patrons in a tussle? We sure hope this isn't the case as we certainly don't want the girls to get hurt - and we are on the far side with no easy way to get us all out. As the shuffling, snorting and bellowing moves around the bar towards our direction, we see a slight man moving javelina-style hurling out commands to "move back", "step into this room", "move or I 'll through you out". One in our party of five is sitting at the bar and this commander-the-manager (not kidding, the manager!) snorts to our guest that he must move his knee as it is blocking the way. Really, a body part is impending the entire restaurant should an immediate mass executus need to occur? Then he turned to me and put his palms ON my chest and said I had to move into the room next door (behind me)... clearly missing his TSA days...hey, hey hey back of the hand, back of the hand... Needless to say we left this hot culinary mess as his F bombs continued hurling over the crowd. We asked for his name on the way out but he wouldn't volunteer it. Called the new F Restaurant on the way home - the man who renamed "A Restaurant" to "F Restaurant" is "Kirk the Manager..." So, bring a electric knife, some heat and ear plugs. You'll have a swell time...Classically Tragic since 1926... For a safe (should we even have to be worrying about this) and pleasurable dining experience nearby, we would recommend LA Cave or Rothschild's if you need the authentic hip vibe as described; Marche Modern for an out of this world dining experience...and Chef Mumsie, The Winery and the Royal Hen are all excellent choices. read more

I really enjoyed being in an old school steakhouse once again. The low wood ceilings and big red booths create a cozy environment. Our server, Brian, knew his stuff and did a great job managing our sizable and high maintenance group. The heart of palm salad was delicious and I thoroughly enjoyed my hangar steak. Went for the first time as this used to be the Arches last Sunday 5/26. Went with 3 others for dinner. The bar area is really loud. Made us talk louder then usual. Kind of funny though. Bar was a cool place to hang.. kind of a meet up place. ;) Food was hit or miss. Avoid the chocolate cheesecake! order the scallops! order the ahi tuna! Avoid the $45 . The Filet was... Meh. I was staying at the Lido House on a business trip last week and remembered having a good dinner last time I came to A Restaurant... so I popped back in for some drinks and dinner after a long day on the road. I was leaning towards the fried chicken, but the bartender said they were best known for their steaks. Drinks were good... and I had a few in the time it took them to prepare my filet. The filet finally showed up looking burnt (I had asked for med-well) with a hard blackened crust. Sadly it was very under-flavored and bloody-red inside to boot. By the time the bartender got around to asking me how it was, I showed her and let her know it wasn't awesome. In the end, I could barely eat half of it. The bartender offered to have the kitchen make me another one... but I just didn't feel like waiting any longer. I paid my $120 check and left. Looking back, I am surprised that they went ahead and left that half-eaten, burnt bloody filet on the bill. read more

What a fantastic dinner we had! The restaurant is beautiful inside with a lively bar unlike any I've seen before. Most of the dining room seating is in velvet banquettes which makes it an ideal spot for a romantic evening. The ambience is such that you can actually talk and be heard as you dine. The food was delicious, especially the chicken piccata and pasta and a great Caesar salad . Our Server Rachel really made the evening a special one for us. She was attentive without being intrusive, and extremely professional and personable. Without asking, she paced the timing of our meal so that we were able to fully enjoy each course without ever feeling rushed or waiting too long for the next dish. When she learned it was our anniversary , she presented us with flutes of complimentary champagne which was delicious. The wine list is epic with many unique wines and vintages. The Sommelier is knowledgeable and helpful in pairing the right wine in your price range with your meal. We had walked out of Marche Moderne next door because of their rude and sarcastic manager's treatment of us and told Rachel about it. The manager came to our table at A Restaurant to wish us a happy anniversary. Both he and Rachel were shocked by the way we were treated at Marche Moderne and they went out of their way to make up for our negative experience. After a delicious meal, we were ready to leave when our Server brought us complimentary desserts for our anniversary. And then something happened that I have never experienced before. As we were leaving, the Manager gave us a gift certificate! The team went above and beyond to make our anniversary a memorable one. We can't wait to go back! read more

After years of living in np we decided to check out the restaurant due to the amazing reviews. Made and reservation and immediately after we got in, got seated. The server was super nice and the food was amazing. However it felt like there is only one server working at the restaurant because it took them 15 minute to come to our table and get our drink orders and another 15-20 min to take ourink orders. Also the table across from us was overload with people coming and going and standing in the aisle(AKA)at our table. At some point one of the guys just left his drink on our table. They were screaming and walking around all night and no one told them anything. At the end this could be an amazing experience which was ruined with poor management. read more

Our party of seven showed up at 5pm last night with no reservation. I was taking a gamble and boy did it pay off. The hostess was a nice as could be and said she would try to get us in and she did. The good: old school steak house decor with red leather seats and low lights. Spanish octopus was a little chewy but altogether had great flavor with the chickpeas and roasted tomatoes. My wife's scallops with acorn squash was amazing. The side of grilled carrots was buttery and delicious. The bad: super loud bro atmosphere after 8:00 pm. The bar right next to the restaurant watching football was louder than a sports bar clapping and cheering at every play. My first drink with Japanese whiskey and yuzu had no flavor. My second drink The Maple Kind had way too much sugar. My medium rare block steak (which the waiter said was their specialty) was very tough on the inside and so charred it tasted burned on the outside. I couldn't finish it, and I never waste food. The ugly: in this day and age, this restaurant still thinks it's appropriate to itemize an ACA surcharge of 1.5% ($5 on a $300 bill). Just add the additional cost to your prices and keep your politics off my receipt. read more

First time eating at A and we were blown away! Great ambiance, great food and a great waiter. We started with the hamachi crudo, so tasty! Our group of 7 went to A's for our college girls trip celebrating our 21st year of graduating. Every single aspect of our evening was phenomenal. We were given the "party pit" which allowed us to have conversations easily. Our server, Matt, went above and beyond to make us feel welcome. He never rushed us and was incredibly attentive. We all had heard good things and except for the car left running after a waiting to be seated outside and watched it run and run in the same place for AT LEAST TEN MINUTES (+) And after a good meal with service that outshone the valet by far, I arrived at my sons place, to find my Von Zipper Sunglasses were lifted as well. Food was really good: we had two ribeyes and a salmon. Sides were fries, Brussels sprouts, and dirty rice. The meat has great flavor and you can really taste the characteristics - completely worth the price. The Brussel sprouts were amazing. They are shaved and delicious. Dirty rice and fries were underwhelming. The best fries are found at The Corner, a restaurant/bar in Huntington Beach. Service: Good. The waiter we had was okay, but he seemed like he didn't want to be working. We wish we had the guy wearing the Argyle sweater - he seemed super pumped to be there and serving people. Ambience: Holy mother - the bar you have to wade through to sit at your table is straight out of a bad 80s movie. It's like the most annoying people on the planet all Tweeted each other for a 6pm meet up at the bar.
