This was the greatest little spot in the Bay Area for a fresh cup of coffee and delicious homemade food. I had the chia pudding which can be sugar free if you get no granola and ask for no honey. The owner, Laura, was so wonderful. My mom doesn't eat flour or sugar and always has a lot of questions and special requests. She didn't even hesitate or get frustrated like most people do. We ended up here from a random yelp search for a deli. Don't let the outside appearance deter you from experiencing this little gem in Hayward. This small mom and pop deli/breakfast spot has great coffee, amazing service and delicious food! The interior decor is very cute they have a nice little outside area in the back. They offered us water and a sample of their delicious chia granola parfait while we waited for our order. We ordered a tuna melt, chicken chipotle Sando, and el disperdicio sando. The not so good & reason for only 3 stars: It took 1 hour to get the 2 sandwiches we ordered even though the people before us, & others who came in 30min after us, got their food in a reasonable time. There was no explanation ~ they just kept saying ours was coming soon. We ended up having to take our food to go & almost had to leave without it! I ordered a cobb salad and a small cafe de olla to go; the presentation (looked so visually APPEALING even though it was in a to-go box) & the taste - both perfect. The outside is very deceiving, but I side is charming and lovely and the service was truly impeccable. The fabulous person who took our order let us try the chia, which was so incredible that my friend ordered a whole serving of it!! What a hidden gem! El Desperdicio is delicious! The cookies are also warmed up and really good. Very chill and relaxed vibes but not a lot of seating. Only down side is the wait time. There are bars on the windows and doors, but one steps inside to a delicious haven. I had "El Tren" with chicken, black bean spread, avocado, carrots, jalapenos and pickled onions on a wonderfully crunchy french roll. I am not sure that I have ever enjoyed a sandwich more. There was and abundance of vegetables and the flavor was fantastic. The ice coffee was also great, even when decaf. There was also a lovely tray of small tarts in the pastry display (Tutuli Coyotas). The nice person helping me said that one flavor was 'Jamaican'. She also had guava and dulce de leche. Being curious about Jamaican, I ordered that one.
