What an inspiring collection of people. It's very cool to find a business where the employees love their jobs and create a positive and energetic spirit that permeates the local community. I bought a pair of running shoes here before covid. Unlike every other shoe-buying experience I've ever had, the salesman was more interested in helping me maximize my running experience than anything else. He recorded video of me running outside in 7-8 different pairs of shoes, described each shoe helpfully, and explained running techniques in a helpful and easy to understand way. When I selected a final pair of kicks more based on looks than feel (hey, gotta look good right?) I could tell he was disappointed in me. I was so impressed. Talk about a purist. He shared that he's run 15+ marathons, so I probably shouldn't be surprised. A few months later (during covid), I contacted ARM via email to order a second pair of the same shoes. Eileen (store manager) replied promptly, informing me they were out of stock and that the shoe was a special edition so there wouldn't be any more. A few days later, she followed up saying that she found the last pair in my size somewhere across the country and that she could get the shoes to me if I still wanted them (umm, heck yes!). I visited A Runner's World in SF for the first time and was immediately impressed with the attentiveness of the staff. Each of the associates was willing to spend the time necessary to make sure their clients got the best fit and most appropriate shoe for their needs. They know the ins & outs of walking, hiking and running shoes and have an excellent selection of brands and models. Each client is encouraged to try on the shoes of choice and take them out into the sidewalk for a trial run. I highly recommend this store for active, outdoor-oriented people. read more

How long have I been missing out on an experience like this? My runner friends have been holding out on me! They did a thermal check on my arches, filmed me running, and showed me in slow motion some issues I had in movement. I learned so much about myself, it was better than therapy! I have a masters in counseling, so no shade. After all that, they brought out shoes that would help me with my issues and explained the structure of each shoe so that I understood how it would help me correct my situation. I put on the first pair and stood up. I started tearing up. What the heck?! I just came in for friggin' shoes! The stability issues I didn't even know I had were immediately corrected and standing up never felt so right! I ended up buying 2 pairs of shoes that worked differently. I didn't buy the one that felt the best because it looked boring. Yes, I'm still so conditioned after years of normal people shoe shopping, but I've never been happier. read more

Two highlights of this place: they provided some fun, insightful, beginner friendly analysis of your running style and staff were so friendly! For analysis of your running style, they start with a very standard measurement of your foot size and tell you to go up half a size for running shoes. Then they have you stand on a heat map to anazlyse your foot arches. Then they take you outside to jog a few steps while they record a video to analyze your pronation (basically if your leg is straight and your ankles don't roll too much). Everything was normal for me, but it was interesting to get this formally analyzed! The staff was also super friendly and patient! Patrick helped me and my friend, and since we hadn't done that much research we had a lot of questions but he patiently answered all of them. My friend just wanted to try things and not purchase anything, and he wasn't pushy about it at all! They're also very covid safe, they only let in 2 groups of up to 2 people per group at a time. This does mean on a weekend there starts to be a line by 10:30-11am though, so get there early! read more

I came here pre-COVID-19 and the staff was super friendly and helpful! I was looking for a comfortable running shoe and they helped me pick out a perfect pair and I even got to test the shoe by running the block and they filmed it etc. They gave me options within my budget and didn't pressure me to buy the most expensive shoe either which was wonderful! I came here because I urgently needed new shoes and usually hate shoe shopping, but this was actually such a fun experience!! It was pretty crowded when I went but it didn't take long to have someone working with me. They took a video of me running, got my shoe size, and measured my arches. I have pretty flat feet and they were able to recommend a shoe that would be best suited for that. I got to test run a couple pairs and found one I loved. They don't have a ton of color selection in person but said they could order some--I didn't care that much so went with the one they had. I'm leaving a three star for three reasons: 1) the wait was incredibly long (1.25 hrs); 2) the selection of shoes was fairly slim and I don't like that so many people road test shoes that they then turn around and sell you. Seriously there seemed to be one shoe of each type available and you had to wait for other testers to take them off. 3) The staff was too judgement filled for my interest. Running has been a longtime sport for me, and after children I gained weight. It seemed unusual to have to explain that I was indeed a runner who runs 10-15 miles a week and am still a "larger sized" runner with hips (size 8 and curvy--hazaa motherhood). As a person who ran for over nine years competitively, I find it frustrating that our sport still imposes this presumption of what a runners body looks like and will share those presumptions by saying "walking/hiking" after I've used the word "running/runner/exclusively for running" so many times since starting the consult. Alas, not the right place to go if you are a fuller bodied runner. read more

I'm someone who absolutely hates shopping for running shoes. It's very rare for me to go to a sports store and come out with a pair of shoes that doesn't absolutely destroy my feet/arches (I won't name names, but one store fitted me with a pair of shoes that were so narrow that I took them off and ran barefoot instead on the track because they hurt THAT much). However, A Runner's Mind has changed my shoe shopping experience for the better. I'm very happy with their gait analysis, shoe selection, and thorough/personalized service. **I do admit, I'm a little biased as my partner works at ARM (they didn't ask me for a review so I'm writing this of my own accord). There is so many choices out there for running shoes from maximalist to minimalist and everything in between, and it's easy to get lost in the noise. However, these guys will help you find the shoes that are best for you. I love that this place feels like a runner's community, vs. purely a business. Also love that the shoes are not overly high priced vs. what you would find elsewhere (eg. amazon), so it's highly worth the trip out to the store if you're considering a new pair of runners. If you are looking for running shoes and you don't really know "shoes" this is the place to go to!! Up until now, this was my shoe shopping process: walk into a Nike store and pick some combination of good looking, comfy, not ridiculously expensive pair! And this worked great tbh! However, I had a feeling that there had to be a more scientific way of picking shoes! Sure enough, ARM showed up on my radar. These guys, know their shoes!! They do a gait analysis and suggest shoes to correct pronation. They have just the right number of shoes (so that you are not numbed by choice). They allow you to run around outside to test out the shoes and even have a standard return policy. Overall, they were polite, very matter of fact and were totally okay with staying past closing time while we chose shoes. I was more rushed than them! Lol. I found a nice pair of shoes and they were in the same price range as the Nike's I would have otherwise bought. read more

The only running specialty store in the city, and it's a good one. I visited today to get a shoe fitting and to get a new pair of running shoes. The people working there are very friendly and extremely knowledgable. Prices are competitive and the wide range of shoes enables the employees to figure out just the shoe for you. I was looking for sports tape after seeing a podiatrist about a sprained ankle. They didn't carry that here but was recommended to use a brace as it does the same thing as tape and provides the same amount of support. They didn't have the correct size for me but they offered to have the brace dropped off here from one of their other locations that had it in stock. Fair prices, well-informed staff, visual analysis of your run, and no pressure at all. I wanted a professional to fit my foot for comfortable running and walking, and that's exactly what I got here. I'm *very* picky with shoes, but Eileen identified some good candidates for me pretty quickly. She started with a visual analysis of my run to determine how much I pronate, brought out the right size from each brand, and guided me through my *own* analysis comparing them. Throughout the process, she offered expertise on shoe construction, what features are best for different purposes, and what features are genuinely just a matter of personal preference and comfort. She sent me on multiple runs with each pair, different pairs in combination, and pairs in different orders; and she helped me keep track of how each of those runs went as I made my decision. I ran about 2 hours total in their shoes, and she was perfectly happy to let me keep going until my feet were satisfied they'd found the right pair. I 100% recommend these guys. read more

I go through a lot of running shoes. In a normal week, I'll use four different pairs. When I want to try something new, I head to A Runner's Mind. The staff is really thoughtful and listens carefully. Even when I go during a busier time on a weekend, a staff member will measure my feet, evaluate my arch height, and then take a video of me running in my shoes so I can watch my mechanics in slow motion. Having comfortable feet while running and exercising can make the difference between a really sore body, and being just moderately sore . Seriously though, this is the spot to find the ideal running shoe. The amazing foot specialists here help measure the foot's width, length and thermal footprint. Then you get to try out many versions and sizes of shoes to find a fit that's roomy enough for the foot to swell when running but not slip in the heel. Today I learned the runners knot. I came here a few weeks ago and was helped by Noah. Great guy and spent the time going through the gait analysis with me, explaining everything in detail and answering my questions. I didn't make an appointment and just walked in after finding the shop online, but it can get busy and you'll have to wait since they're thorough with each customer. The whole process took about 1-2 hours. After the analysis, I got to try out a few options and ended up picking a pair that I love. Really cool how they're keeping everything sanitized. If you've had difficulty finding the right shoe or support for whether you need to stand all day, run, jog or walk, they are experienced in they're knowledge and will analyze how you specifically land on your foot to look for the right support for yourself. I've always had a tough time finding my right support and I didn't really believe in how a shoe can change your posture until I tried this place. I always thought a shoe is a shoe and the lighter the better. It's cool they have you try different shoes and you will then decide which one you feel the most comfortable. Pricing is a tad pricey but it's worth a try and those shoes will last you for a super long time if you get 1 pair for the reason for what you will be using them for. read more

I was tired of running in some old beat up sneaks and decided to come here to up my game. Carlos and Taylor were great through the whole experience. We went through different analyses on where I was putting pressure on my feet and even got to see on an iPad, footage of my run and what my tendencies are in form. What I appreciated most is by the end we had boxes upon boxes spread throughout the floor even though it was near closing time and a run club was getting ready for an event. If you've ever checked out fleet feet this place is similar only: 1. It's way bigger, so there's more stuff to chose from; 2. It's not in the marina (obvi) so parking doesn't take 40 minutes (meters are usually super easy to come by, and only $2/hour, unlike the marina, where I think they are like $3.25/hour); 3. There's a tv with a couch and sports on for waiting friends, kids, significant others. Boom. Sold. They do the whole sizing running gait analysis thing here too, with that lovely exchange policy that any good running store should have by now. I got some asics that I'm super pumped about. I came here to pick up a race packet and was actually interested on looking around while I waited. I heard about A Runners Mind in Burlingame and heard that they're a great runner store. They have runs on Tuesdays for hill repeats and a cable car chase the last Tuesday at 7pm, Thursday at the same time and Saturday for runs a little longer at 9am I've been running for quite awhile and have an average knowledge of running shoes (like heel drop, pronation, material and gait) but only in the Nike area. Monte, the store owner helped give me a choice variety of shoes based on how I run and picked out several shoes that could be the right fit for me. In a sense he broadened my horizons to other brands like Mizuno, Brooks and Saucony. - Employees are helpful whether you're just a beginner or average runner they'll help you find the right shoe and become more knowledgable. -They're not just limited to one brand of shoe -They let you run a block or so outside in the shoes that they suggest you so you can see for yourself how they feel. -Lot of runner apparel/fuel in the store to! -They also have Cross country flats plus track spikes for sale. -The ARM shirts! Great expertise but service can be improved. I would give it a 3.5 stars. This store is being manage by 2 guys: one seems to be the expert runner who helps me during first few minute. He was quite bossy. Then without saying anything the other guy was then helping me since the expert guy has moved on to new customers. The 2nd one seems to be the business side since he has better customer service but didn't appear to know as much. They let me tried on 4 pairs and ran down the block with each. I found that their expertise is spot on but service could be improved. Not sure if it's the Presidio Heights attitude but considering the neighborhood, I expect better. Their price is fair. This is a great place to buy running shoes. The sales guy comes across as more of a coach than a salesman. He measured my feet (not just size, but wide here, narrow here, etc.) and posture and we talked about shoes, injuries, running styles and habits. He gave me a pair of shoes to try on, and had me run down the block and back while he watched and told me about my running style, then came back with another pair. After taking just four pairs for test-drives, I left with some comfy shoes. I'll be back again next time I need running shoes. read more
