If you are looking for Chinese food like Chinatown's, go to Chinatown. Best Chinese meal I've had in the last 10 years. I travel a lot, and this is up to Shun Lee Palace in New York standards. It might be called upscale Chinese. I'm saying this may not be "authentic" Chinese (I'm not sure what that is). The thing is that the food is fresh, service was efficient and overall a great evening. They have a number of vegetarian dishes and the menu also shows dishes that contain meat, but can be substituted so they are vegetarian. The fried string bean appetizer is a 10. It's a must have. Their daily specials change, and can be found on their web site each day. I liked it enough that when my flight home was delayed until the next day, I came back. Had a special special. A very tender piece of pork, black bean sauce and 4 fried oysters. I was instructed to wrap them all in the 4 lettuce leaves the accompanied it. Yummy! All the dishes come "family style" and most tables have a lazy susan that allows you to share without the hassle of passing the dishes. Reservations are a must. The restaurant is in an old home, and easy to miss. A great and unexpected find in Burlington. read more

Upscale Chinese food in a casual but refined setting. Really expansive menu that has a lot of vegetarian options. This is absolutely a step above take-out strip-mall chinese food (Garden of insert name here). The mock eel app is really interesting and very good -- shitake mushrooms masqerading as unagi aka eel. Unfortunately the veggie dumplings were bland and uninspired. Also what's nice is the sharing of plates is encouraged, and it seems best to go in a group. Delicious. Incredibly busy. Make reservations! Heard wonderful things about this place and I was glad to have had the opportunity to check it out. We went with the mock eel, dumplings, and sliced BBQ beef. This was a late dinner and we wanted to sample a variety of the more popular dishes to we wouldn't feel like we were missing out. The mock eel was fantastic, although very salty. Almost a bit too caramelized as well, but I am guessing that this is how it was supposed to be prepared. Either way, it was very tasty and I could not stop eating it. The dumplings were delicious as well. Not too doughy, flavorful insides, and a sweet/savory dipping sauce. The sauce was also nice to add to the side of steamed rice we were served. The sliced BBQ beef was terrific. Juicy, succulent, crispy around the edges. Great dish. The service was very nice and Professional, she will recommend you what to order and todayès special. Food Wise, I am Chinese, and very picky on Chinese food. I had a pretty hazy memory of not liking A Single Pebble the first time I went there. Upon trying it again, I realized I didn't like it the first time because I was just having a bad day. My second time going, we got the dinner tasting menu, which was an amazing 9-dish course + dessert! Everything was really delicious, especially the seitan and pad thai. The only thing I was disappointed in were the bok choy dumplings, which were just a little bland, but as a dumpling lover it was a let down. I bet the meat ones are better. Probably walked by this restaurant 50 times when walking from the Burlington Hilton to Church Street and never realized it was even a restaurant. My boss loves this place so we went this week for dinner. We had the dumplings and green beans for appetizers. We really liked the green beans but the dumplings were dry. Main courses - we shared the special beef dish with sweet and sour flavoring - with a spicy kick! We really enjoyed the recommendation. We also got the Scallops with 3 peppers. The scallops were plentiful. Unfortunately - the appetizers and main dishes were not served together - we actually thought they had forgot the second main course as it was so late arriving. Inconsistent. I've been there twice now, many months apart, both times with large parties. The first time it was a lot of fun. Good food, good friends, good times, but the novelty of it might have influenced my opinion. The second time, well, "Meh." The good news is that they can handle large parties pretty well. The not so good news is that the food was inconsistently prepared. Two very different culinary experiences. Still, the first one was good enough to lure us back, so don't be put off by me. I'd definitely suggest that you give it a try, because while I'm lookin at a 1 and 1 in the middle of the 5th, you may be there on a walk off home run night. Besides, if you are yearning for Chinese eats in Burlington, you probably aren't going to do any better than Single Pebble. Give it a try. read more

A Single Pebble is my favorite Chinese restaurant. We eat here whenever we are in town from NJ. They are very accommodating to vegans. Large portions and we always end up with a lot of food to bring home! Definitely make a reservation as they get very busy! You can't go wrong with anything you order here! read more

We were in Burlington for one night and based our decision to dine there on past reviews. Overall, dinner was fair to middling and quite overrated. I had high hopes for this place walking in, but was very disappointed with what we found. The food was blah, the service was less then desirable and overall we just didn't have the great meal we were expecting. To start off with, we ordered the mock eel. One of they're signature dishes that sounds super delicious on the menu. What we got was salt on a plate. Literally, the dish was so full of sodium I had to stop eating it. That has never ever happened to me before. We then got a soup that was good, but nothing special. It felt like a soup that was trying too hard to be Thai. Last but not least the tangerine chicken. It may have been the name or the description on the menu that sold us, but when it came out and we tasted it, we realized what we ordered. It was orange chicken. Yes, the super sweet, saucy and deeply fried chicken dish that many Americans have grown to love from their local Chinese joint. Not a dish that you pay $20 for! My boyfriend and I had a few bites each and couldn't finish it. The food was underwhelming. So much so that we didn't even bring leftovers home. Ick. One thing I will say that is positive is that the drinks are good. I got the Souza Cosmo and really enjoyed it (hence the two star rating). First and last time we'll be going here! read more

Excellent food and service. Highly recommend ordering family-style for your group; this place can be a great value if you approach it that way. (On my last visit, our group of six shared three appetizers, a pot of soup, two entrees, and a dessert; we had our fill and still had leftovers.) The mock eel, chicken dumplings, and pork potstickers were all very good. The Spicy Three River soup was excellent -- just the right amount of kick to satisfy everyone in our party, and it served all six of us rather than the 3-4 specified. The Steel Pot Sha Cha Beef was also excellent, with nicely balanced textures and flavors. We went during a non-rush time, so we had no issues in getting a table. We ordered the vegetarian tasting menu. We were very pleased with the dishes served; however, we could have done with about half of the amount served. I will agree with other reviews that the dishes were typically on the saltier side; however, that isn't really a problem for me and I didn't feel it was overwhelmingly salty. The originally vegetarian as well as the adapted to be vegetarian recipes were both extremely good to my taste. The price for the tasting menu was quite reasonable for the amount and quality of food received. There was nothing on it that we did not enjoy. We found that we had to work a bit to save appetite for the upcoming dishes. If there is any constructive feedback I could give, it would be to let the table have a better idea of how many items to expect. The service was unobtrusive and helpful. The pacing of dishes on the sampling menu was done exactly right. We would definitely go back again if we are in Burlington. read more

My son and I ate dinner at SP last night. I have eaten there several times in the past but not for a year or so. We love the classy atmosphere. (Last time we had the chefs menu, which was fantastic. ) This time we ordered off the menu. I found all of the food to have delicious flavor, but everything was VERY salty. The hostess was delightful, and the young woman who bussed our table was lovely too; but we were less than impressed with our waiter. He did not check in with us; service was perfunctory at best, even standoffish. I left him exactly 15% which was too bad considering tips might be pooled? I am not sure we would go back unless I had A coupon or something to help me feel that better value was there. And that I should try an old favorite once again! read more

Again w the single stars...this place is a solid 3 1/2 but not quite a 4. These guys were super accommodating for a party of 8. They're specialty is a pretty amazing array of dumplings and I'm pretty sure we tried them all. And they were all pretty tasty, especially the spicy little chicken ones that had some sort of hot pepper right inside this petite little gem. The rest of the fare was standard American Chinese but really really good. Chicken fried rice, their spin on general tso's, beef in a pot thing-y...but the hit was ants climbing a tree. Clear noodles w a dark sauce, bean pods and ground pork. Maybe a little spicy too-get it! Atmosphere was good and a really liked the giant turn table on the table to spin food to your buddy on the other side. read more

DONT WAIST YOUR MONEY! I am no expert, but I have ate at many Chinese restaurants etc. I just wanted the shrimp fried rice to eat that night. The waitress spent about 10 minutes convincing us to order more food. She even started to get upset. We ended up ordering a $20 plate of lemon chicken. Well, it had no flavor plain and was even terrible doused in sauce. It was nicely prepared on a plate of rotten shredded lettuce. Just a tiny piece of breaded chicken for $20. All around a terrible experience. We had a family group of 6. With a reservation our table was 30 minutes late. Water and drinks came out after food. They never brought forks when asked. The worst was that the chef's tasting menu was delightfully encouraged which we ordered. The food came out very quickly with one dish on top of another - so quickly we could not keep up. We had two young children who were charged for the tasting menu equal to an adult which we were never advised or explained. and to top it off, the food was not very good. Tip was included so we could not address in the tip with our total almost 400$. We have done tasting menus before. We were looking forward to a nice birthday meal to celebrate my mothers birthday. Without a doubt the best Chinese restaurants in Vermont and it definitely rivals ones that are of it's class in New York. I have been here many times and there are so many different dishes that are delicious. For appetizers I would recommend the barbecue hanging pork (the small dish not the large), the dry fried green beans, the imperial rolls and the radish cake (a special only). The pork is always extremely tender with a crispy outside atop a nice pile of veggies. I had never had anything like the dry fried green beans before, so flavorful with small cubes of red pepper and flecks of minced pork. The imperial rolls are delicate spring rolls except filled completely with a variety of seafood, not very oily and just a joy for seafood lovers. The radish cake is a special favorite of mine as it isn't on the menu but sometimes features as a special (though they occasionally make it on request), the delightful square of radish with bits of bacon is one of the best dishes they have. Soup wise I would look at the hot and sour soup (using the same recipe that was brought to America in 1953) it is filled with meats, shrimp and delicious vegetables that are not over powered by the incredible spice it brings (it serves 3-4 people). I would also recommend the breakfast soup which is sometimes a soup special during lunch time. It tastes like hot and sour and wonton had a baby and created this mildly spiced dumpling soup. For the main dishes I would go for the crispy scallops, emperor's beef, mock general chao's chicken and any special they may have that evening. If I am honest if you want to have a really amazing meal order mainly apps and order one or two main courses. There are many other apps that are also delicious like the potsticker dumplings, char shao buns, scallion pancake the fresh napa cabbage (an excellent palate cleanser) and the cha tzu style eggplant. It also stays open pretty late and the kitchen stays open until it is "closing" time but they don't ask you to leave, you just stay till you are done. read more

I found this place to have delicious food but to be slightly elitist. The waitress was really rude at times and not very friendly. I found this super surprising as we did nothing to offend her. I did really like all of the small dishes that we got as they were very tasty. I have a friend who is now in love with the mock eel dish. Love this amazing find! Love the building, love the setting. Love the food, love the drink, love the staff. . . ok. . . . Let me start with what I started with - the house-infused ginger/lemon-grass martini. Oh. Yes. Yes, it was amazing. And weird. And delicious. Everything is "meant to be shared" - which doesn't mean it's a huge dish, but it is definitely plenty! The dishes come out one at a time (or so, depending on how much you order) and placed on the massive Lazy Susan. My faves were the red oil dumplings and cross-cut zucchini. Also ordered the crispy scallops, which were HUGE and tender. Just like I like 'em. Melted in my mouth (insert Homer Simpson "aggggaggg/drool"). Loved our server, Becky! She was so adorable, and made recommendations on drinks and food, and was often back to check on us, despite how busy her section was. So. All this to say, if you are in Burlington, you must head to A Single Pebble. You must go with a group. Not a big group, just a hungry group. You must eat the dumplings with chopsticks. My only concern is our server seemed to forget about us for a while, and I was hungry at the time so I think it bothered me more than it normally would. Had an amazing meal at the single pebble this evening. Wonderful ambiance, service, and food. Our waitress recommended the perfect Riesling for our meal which consisted of ... 1. Double garlic broccoli - absolutely amazing, possibly my favorite dish of the night. 2. Sliced BBQ hangar pork - so delicious, highly recommend ordering this 3. Fried string beans - great but the broccoli was so much better that We didn't even come close to finishing it. 4. The peeking duck - also very good but I've definitely had better 5. Dumpling sampler - ehh it was tasty but the flavors and textures just weren't for me and honestly one of them tasted like a hot dog which threw me off definitely don't recommend ordering this special 6. Sorbet sampler - amazing sorbet but the edible bowl should have been more like a cookie and less like a cracker read more

So I blew into town on business and quickly hit the Googles (and my trusty Yelp app!) for the best eats as I often do and this place popped to the top of the searches quickly thanks to its appearance on a TV Food Network show; so of course I had to go! Immediately the collegiate crowd, youthful staff, and local beer gave this a very hipster vibe; however the setting was still classy in a very northern New England cozy kind-of-way. Really enjoyable and quite perfect for blustery winter night I strolled in on. The bill of fare was a bit overwhelming because of its adventurous Asian stylistic perspective but the menu's descriptions and very knowledgeable staff took the pressure off right away, with a good beer selection and some off the menu favorites I didn't sweat the choices and trusted their direction. Moo Moo beef dumplings to start and the Wok stir fry du jour for me! Honestly it did not disappoint. Really great flavors and besides having some items my relatively limited pallet was not yet familiar with it was really delish! I did not try any of the 'famous' choices trusting my bartender to lead me down the right path and I suggest you do the same. Some odds and ends of note, the parking is on the street in the busiest city in the state; I imagine that can get hairy on weekends, particularly when the snow begins to pile up. That said it was able to find a spot directly out front, so take that for what it's worth. The seating was more than adequate and there were several tables that set up really nicely for groups; and based on what I saw they prepare their dishes to accommodate the family style meals. Volume level is conducive to conversations which is great, has a bar but after setting at it, the better dining experience is at the table. Overall a recommended spot, and the only thing keeping it from a full 5 star rating is the adventurous menu that may not appeal to all. As far as a delicious modern Asian bistro, best in class, in my opinion. read more

This is the only authentic-tasting Chinese food I've had in New England. Much of the menu is Taiwanese "small bites" or tapas style, meant to be shared between people. Mmm so good.... I've eaten here twice now, as part of a large group. My company is based in Vermont, and I spend a lot of time in China. Living in Tacoma, I have many many choices of Asian food to choose from. A Single Pebble is good, even very good. The food is well prepared, service is excellent and it is reasonably priced. The last time I ate there (1/7/13) we had a selection of dishes from across the spectrum. They were all very good. What I don't get is, why call something "mock eel" or "mock beef"? this is Burlington, not Kansas, and I shiitake mushrooms are excellent, why call them "eel". Some people would get turned off by eel. So, I found this disguise stuff a bit weird. I haven't tried to order coffee here. I laughed reading the other reviews about it, so I'll make sure to try to order some on my next visit. Yes, I'd go again, but suggest the restaurant not bother with the disguised food and just go with it. Most of us (especially the clientele for this restaurant) eat vegetarian once or more a week anyway, so embrace it. read more

Year in year out, this place remains one of the area's most sumptuous dining experiences. The food is as unique as the decor (not to mention the hushed, quiet atmosphere) and while the operation doesn't monitor inquiries on its FB page closely enough, that's a worthy price to pay for both appetizers and main courses as plentiful as they are flavorful. The first time I came here was for a friend's going away dinner a few months. I sampled a few things, but really liked the Emperor's Beef and the tuna from the dinner special. I went back today for lunch and I could almost swear it tastes better than the first time. They didn't have the tuna during lunch, but that was fine with me. I also got them to make the beef really spicy and they didn't hold back. I LOVE IT! I really hope this doesn't turn into a love affair that will keep my pockets empty, lol. read more

Expectations exceeded! This is sort of a farm to table asian place and I looove good chinese food. My expectations weren't very high since this is Vermont after all, but they did a great job. We tried for appetizer: the sesame chicken dumplings, the pork steamed dumplings, the vegetable dumplings in hot oil, the scallion pancakes and each got a cup of the soup special. Yes we brought our appetites. The dumplings were a little doughy but had great flavor. The dumpling dipping sauces were great. The sesame dumplings had a peanut ish sauce and sesame seeds on top- not amazing unless you really like peanut sauce. The hot oil dumplings were also just okay also. The scallion pancakes were also great! Not too oily like they sometimes are. The soup was AMAZING, possibly one of the best things we ate. The broth was very flavorful, it was just extremely well done. Now onto the main courses. Let's be honest, normally the appetizers are the best part of the chinese food meal experience. But that is not the case here! The beef with broccoli I highly recommend. It is so refreshing to have really great quality beef at a chinese food restaurant. It was tender, cooked perfectly, and the black bean sauce was great. We had the noodles with mushrooms, pork, and onions which were okay, but were lightly flavored- but we don't usually get noodles so maybe we just got the wrong noodle dish. We also got the hanging pork- it's served on a bed of cooked greens, and the pork is cantonese BBQ style (not saucy, just a light sweet coating with the pork thinly sliced). Pork was also great quality. In all, definitely coming back. It was a relaxing meal and the service was friendly and the food was great. A gem in Vermont! read more

After multiple visits, found that by avoiding the $40/person chef's tasting menu, and instead ordering on a per item basis off the standard menu, we saved about 35 to 40%. Rate the food a 3 out of 5 overall; however, Double garlic broccoli, Buddha's sesame beef, Chicken lo mein, and pork fried rice are all excellent and are among our favorites. We ate here on a Tuesday evening. Every other time I've been there, its been too busy to get a table. This time, there was plenty of tables. So I was glad. And boy, did the food smell good from the get-go. It was dimly lit, and there was quiet music. A classy joint, to be sure. Our server was very attentive and knowledgeable, but not particularly homey, which I like. Another review said the place was snooty, and I have to admit, I could sense that too. When we walked in, the restaurant was pretty much 3/4 empty. A server walked by and said someone would be with us shortly, and walked away, while the bartender stood there and polished glasses. We stood there for some time while the waitstaff and the bartender left us to our own devices. No real "welcome!" or any other sign that our presence was appreciated, if only as paying customers. Bad first impression. Anyway, we ordered a small dish of Double Garlic Broccoli and a large dish of Capital Vegetable Lo Mein. The broccoli was great; way better, in fact, than the lo mein which was just okay, even though it was more expensive. I guess we paid for the sheer amount if it. And unlike so many Asian restaurants, the rice was perfect; not mushy. Because we shared, and drank water, the bill wasn't much, but for "family" portions, you don't get all that much food, so be aware of that. I've been hearing about this place for a long time, so I was glad to finally try it out. Did it live up to the hype? No, but it was still good, and when I'm in town again, I would be happy to go back after I've tried out some other places first. read more

Perhaps the best restaurant I've been to in years. We went for lunch, tried the tasting menu to be adventurous, and it was extraordinary. It can be ordered vegetarian (not vegan, eggs might be present). The menu appeared to be vegan-friendly. The service, food and atmosphere were perfect. It's an old building and difficult to heat in January so we were a bit cold...but that's a minor complaint. Five stars, period.
