Phenomenal. My wife and I were used to Chinese food in Chinatown in NYC, so finding anything comparable in the Burlington area was fruitless (and we looked everywhere)... until last night. We had the scallion pancakes as a starter and they were sublime: perfect balance between the slightly crispy exterior and the soft interior. Savory with a slightly sweet complimentary sauce. I had the Buddha Sesame Beef (Seitan): with a crispy exterior and intricate sauce, it even had my non-Vegan wife stealing food from my plate. My wife had the shrimp fried rice that she raved about. Our waiter was a terrific kid, professional and kind. The only downside was the pricing: many of the entrees are a bit expensive, in the $30+ range. We had a wonderful time and look forward to going back and trying more options from the menu. read more

I can't beleive I'm writing a less than stellar review for A Single Pebble but I felt I must relative to their prices. We've been there many times but not recently because it's very hard to get a reservation. So, my wife had an appointment in Burlington and we decided to order take-out. We ordered the Tangerine Peel Chicken, Dry Fried Green Beans, and Chicken Dumplings. Initially I was shocked at the prices - total of $82.28 but remembered that they serve "Family Style" and each time we're there the servings are large so I assumed the prices were reflective of this for take-out too. Well, when my wife got home I was shocked again at how SMALL the portions were. I'd bet, for example, there was not even a full chicken breast used to make the Tangerine Peel Chicken for $38.00? I'd venture to guess it cost less than $8.00 to make as I'm very familiar with the costs of products from wholesale food service companies. Geez it was just chicken, oranges and spices! The other two items were also very small. The quality was as we expected and very good but they just can't justify such small portions at those costs. It's sad because I have raved to many people about this place and it's even more sad that we will unlikely ever eat there again. Sure other chinese restaurants food isn't as good but for the costs at A Single Pebble you could easily get DOUBLE the food elsewhere. For example, they offer "Emperor's Beef" for $44.00! Really - for beef strips and vegetables and spices?! I found it funny the title under the main dish menu states "Big Dishes"! Gosh if they call their portions BIG I'd hate to see what their SMALL dishes are?! Anyway, I hope this review both helps them understand and appreciate that while the food is top notch they can't in any way justify their current prices and I hope it helps other patrons realize BEFORE they make the mistake I made that the quality no way justifies the exorbitant prices. Mostly authentic Chinese restaurant that's not take out. Snagged one of the last tables as a walk in on a busy night, so points for that. Pretty run of the mill otherwise, was hoping for a bit more. Coat closet is immediately to left when you walk in. Waiter brought a dish of peanuts, wasabi peas and almonds to nibble on while we waited. Server was nice and patient as he could be, while being bombarded with lots of questions about spice level (everything can be made to order). Saketini was strong. Sipped on it the whole meal, was delightful. Cucumber salad was big portion and not spicy, but rather peppery. Chef's dumpling was watercress and didn't care for the very undercooked and not much filling chewy sacks that came out. Peking Duck with muchi pancakes, scallion and cucumbers was out of this world. Duck itself was chopped and shaved making it easy to put into pancakes. No crispy skin, wah. Dipping sauce could have been more flavorful. Came with a frayed scallion to brush on pancakes which I love. Out of all, Peking was best. Ambiance - pretty big inside. Definitely spacious dining room and you have room to move around. Standard Chinese settings, down to the plasticly table cloth and lazy susan in the center of the table. Chopsticks, because duh. Definitely a larger group (6+) dinner spot. read more

We were greeted warmly by the owner of the establishment who was so kind and welcoming! The waitress we had was bubbly, kind and pointed us in the right direction in what to order! The service was top notch! We loved sitting outside on their patio on a beautiful summer evening! The food was delicious and each bite melted in my mouth. The portions were generous! Went to the doctors today, a week later, and it is not infected but she said it was the worst mouth burn she had ever seen. Taking a long time to heal. On May 11, my wife and I had an exquisite meal. We got the sampler, nine portions of meals the kitchen had on hand. It was expensive ($150), but the price was justified. By the end, with tip, we had paid almost $300, which was a shock to us, but since we didn't ask about the price of the meal, we couldn't really argue. We were very happy but the memory was spoiled. I need to report this on Yelp because the owner needs to know that her behavior lacked integrity, because it impugned my integrity to preserve her own. On the prior Wednesday, May 8, I was walking home and as I was about to pass A Single Pebble, remembered that my wife's birthday was coming up and she wanted to go to A Single Pebble. Being unhurried, I turned up the steps to their entrance, walked in and was greeted by a young woman dressed in black, who asked if she could seat me. I informed her that I was there to reserve two seats. She went to the greeter's station, mentioned some times, and I agreed to a time on a Saturday night. Not every memory is crystal clear, but here is the moment of dispute: She told me she would need $20 per seat to reserve, and a credit card. I pulled $40 out of my wallet and gave it and my card to her. I remember thinking, and might have said, but certainly assumed, "This will be credited to my bill of course?". She said "Yes". She returned to the greeter's station and fiddled on the computer, we issued our thank yous, and I left. Saturday came and we were on time, had our meal, paid and left. I grabbed the receipt for the meal on a lark, and looked at it later when I got home. There was no mention of the $40. So finally on Wednesday I returned to inquire about it. I told the owner about paying $40 for the reservation, and before I was finished explaining, the owner said "No you didn't". I was flabbergasted. "Of course I did. I took two twenty dollar bills out of my wallet and handed them to her. Why would I lie?". It went on like this for several minutes. Multiple times she said "I don't believe you." She told me "I don't train my people to do that." She implied that the greeter was a fraud who happened to look like an employee and wasn't. Asking me to describe her, which I did, she said "No one who looks like that works here." I was completely flummoxed and asked "Do you realize that I won't be able to return here?" She said "fine. Don't come back." Had the owner believed me, had the owner merely pretended to believe me, displayed some curiosity, investigated and not been convinced that I lost $40, this would be a story about the concierge stealing $40, and creating a reservation in my name to make it look like I made the reservation myself from home. But instead, this is a story about a restaurant owner who refused to even consider whether her employee had cheated a customer, had blamed the customer, broke a relationship with a neighbor and fan of long standing, over $40, after we paid almost $300 for our meal. We will never enjoy another meal at A Single Pebble. We are so sorry. They produce supreme Chinese cuisine. I don't know why she chose to disbelieve me. Did she assume I would steal or scam her at first chance? Did she think I was a well dressed drug addict? Did she just think I was a down-rank plebeian, undeserving of the courtesy of being believed? With certainty I can say, she had no problem breaking the assumption of trust with which I made the reservation. By not believing me, she sheltered a petty criminal. read more

Not sure why the quality of the dishes they do serve has changed so much. Not enough garlic and ginger . Too much sesame oil. The review below was from last year. Hope they get their back on. Not a single Asian customer when I visited. Not a single employee who spoke Chinese. Despite claims of this being an authentic Chinese restaurant and a website that says otherwise, the actual chef/owner is a white man who can't cook Chinese food to save his life. He "visited" China multiple times so he feels that justifies charging double or triple regular prices for dishes like Mapo tofu. In elevated Chinese restaurants, that Mapo tofu might be made with lobster or foie gras. Here, you pay over $20 to prove how white you are. If you've never been to a Chinatown before, you might be impressed. Dishes like the overhyped mock eel are overly salty. Waitress here didn't even know the difference between soy sauce and vinegar when I asked for the latter for my dumplings. I asked multiple times what ethnicity the chef was and where he was from with the waitress avoiding the answer again and again until finally confessing he was white. It's not a disqualifier, but in a town that's 95% white, definitely looks and feels like cultural appropriation when you don't hire any Asian servers or kitchen staff. The "tasting menu" that changes all the time by the way, never changes. If you really want authentic Chinese, Burlington has Hong's Dumplings where the Chinese owner and her mother make the dumplings right in front of you because they don't need to hide who they really are. If you're a local or a tourist reading this, please support an actual Asian owned business instead of pretending to by putting money into the hands of a white man ripping off their culture badly. read more

Came here for my boyfriend's birthday all the way from New York since we wanted to get out of the area and try something new. We really wanted to like this place but unfortunately that wasn't the case. We should've read the reviews first because what we thought at the end of our meal is exactly what everyone else has said. I ordered a Mai Thai which are my favorite but they didn't have an even amount of everything, it was straight up alcohol, no fruity flavor like it's supposed to have. Our waitress was very nice and helpful but pushy with the chef's tasting menu. I'm a picky eater and don't eat seafood so not knowing what it was going to be was a deal breaker for me. Everything was overpriced for what we got so I'm glad we followed our gut and ordered off the menu. According to reviews, the special is just different noodle dishes and different sauces on top. For $40 per person and BOTH people need to order it aka $80 total, no thanks! We started with Vegetable Red Oil Dumplings and we thought it would be spicy because of the name but we're disappointed. The sauce was super salty so I just ate my dumplings with rice. For my entree I had Ants Climbing a Tree which I really was looking forward to ever since we looked up the menu in advance. However, my dish was so salty that I barely ate it... I had to keep adding rice to lessen the salt! My bf enjoyed his dish, Steel Pot Sha Cha Beef. The noodles were amazing, the type used in my usual favorite, Chow-Fun, but I wish there were more! Also, it could've had more broccoli. This restaurant is one of the only places I make a point visit every time I am in Vermont. The cuisine is elevated and the prices reflect that- it is worth it! Every dish I have had there is well executed and downright addicting. Personal favorites are the double garlic broccoli, Buddha beef is an absolute must, scallion pancakes and the red oil dumplings. I appreciate that they have a solid array of veggie offerings that can be made vegan upon request. I have gotten take out from here a number of times since COVID hit and they have a great setup. Place your order on the site, go at the scheduled pickup time, grab it from the open take out window. Easy and contactless. I was worried about the experience being different take out vs dining in but I can attest that the food totally holds up, and it is fun to set up a fancy dining experience for at home eating. 5 stars all around! read more

This review is specifically for their Sunday Dim Sum. For all you transplants who miss Dim sum and are not able to make the trip to Boston or Montreal, A Single Pebble is the answer to your prayers. Although the prices are a bit high, the dishes all taste as they should and are brought to you in a quick manner. I tried the pork buns, the daikon cakes, the rice balls, shrimp dumplings, and the rice noodles on this trip, which all tasted good! Think of it as if someone decided to elevated dim sum to gourmet status. It tastes right, it tastes good, but the portions are smaller, and the prices are higher. A Single Pebble has been on my Burlington restaurant wish list for years. I was so excited to go...I even knew what I was going to order: the Chef's Tasting Menu...pricey but no matter. I was all in for a great dining experience! We were in town last Saturday and the only reservation I could get was 5:15 - stupid early for a special dinner out but no matter. It must be really great if they were so booked up! The space is inviting, the service was prompt, the food was awful. Eight or nine courses came and went and nothing...not one dish...was even close to good. Even though we ordered the meat eaters' version of the menu, only two dishes had any kind of animal protein. The others consisted of what appeared to be leftover veggies repurposed into bland bites with sauces straight from a can or jar. Nothing was exceptional. Hot dishes were lukewarm and cold dishes were room temp. The worst part was that, even when dish after dish left our table with only two bites taken, not a single server asked if everything was to our liking. It seemed like the kitchen's disregard for our experience was passed along to the servers. "Get 'em in, get 'em out, to hell if they like it." Super disappointing after all the hype. We love the Single Pebble and it's always a go-to place for out of town guests we're hosting. The Lychee Martini is an every-visit item, as is the Mock Eel and the Hot & Sour soup. Broccoli and green beans aren't your average soy sauced veggies. Love the soft melt in your mouth tofu. Pork bun had great dipping sauce. One of the harder reviews to give. Single pebble's food has continued to amaze me since day one. Their dishes are fun, inventive and absolutely delicious while still being classic, familiar and user friendly. I loooove the Buddha sesame beef, wok fried green beans and their hot and sour soup is a must have. Food wise, I consider them in the top three for burlington and they genuinely impress me. Everything there is good and if you don't like it, that means you don't have good taste, not them. Go here, get the tasting menu, be happy and enjoy your leftovers in bed later. I love the bar staff and they always take care of me well. All the food here is on point. On the flip side, their service sucks. They're a notoriously arrogant, unaccommodating business that holds a 'get with the program or get out' vibe that Burlington has never represented for me. They handle waits and busy crowds by being rude, grouchy and assertive to a level unknown to the community and answer their phone and waiting gusts with frustrated voices and smart remarks, as if your business is a hassle. If I could classify this place in one thought, it would be 'Shout out to the chefs, basic hello to the waitstaff". Restaurants run on two things- back of house, front of house. By far one of my favorite experiences in Burlington this time around. My husbands cousin and his wife took us to this place for dinner on our last day in Burlington and I was really blown away. Be me I was very unique, this isn't your typical Chinese food joint. You need a reservation and you need to come hungry but expect to spend a bit more than you planned for dinner. The entrees came out as they came. No specific order. The duck special- I was not a Fan and it was a whopping $24 for like six small pieces. The four of us ordered about 7 dishes including the pork lo mein and red Thai curry soup. I loved the chicken entree it wasn't too large but the quality made up for it. The hubby loved the dumplings we got two orders. The lemon shrimp had large beautiful shrimp, but the lemon-tang didn't go well I thought the chef could have seasoned it differently. Nonetheless over $230 later all four of us were full. The drinks are a bit overpriced, the bathrooms were nice and there was a changing table I got to use for my 9 month old. I would definitely visit here again and order a lot less as the food is very filling. Service was great and we would love to come back here! Solid Chinese food with some interesting vegetarian options. If you know high quality Chinese - especially Szechuan - cuisine, you will not exactly be blown away (my husband and I have both traveled/lived in China) so we liked it well enough but did not think it lived up to the hype. Maybe we did not order the right dishes? Scallion pancakes were mostly pancake, almost no scallion, spicy cucumber was nice but slightly bland, vegan dumplings were good. Salt and pepper tofu was mostly salty but nice crispiness, but the sautéed Chinese veg was pretty good. They did have jasmine tea which was nicely presented in a Chinese teapot. Let me start by saying that we did not actually get around to trying the food so this whole review is simply based on our customer service interactions, which was so completely abysmal that we decided to nope the f**k out. So a group of friends and I planned to come here for my birthday lunch and we had neglected to make a reservation, and I'm not sure if that would have made a difference or not since the restaurant wasn't that busy when we arrived. Anyhow we were told there would be a wait which is all fine and good, and luckily for us the bigger tables were finishing up. Anyhow, the hostess at the door was the kicker: she was difficult, rude, and her demeanor was all around condescending. We were informed that for our small ice cream cake (couldn't have been bigger than 7 in diameter), we would be charged $2.50 per person. In addition, when I went to scout out a menu, the hostess shoo'ed me away and told me it was dim sum service only. I decided to go back to the podium and inquire more about the dim sum service because there were also none of the dim sum carts going around and no menu, and I was confused by the set up. The hostess rolled her eyes and explained that the waiters come around to each table with a tray on which there were 3-4 dim sum platters and we could choose which ones we wanted. Oh and btw for tiny portions it would be $5-$9. Okay no, no, and no. The hostess was already rude, the food was expensive in comparison to even the most expensive dim sum restaurants I've been to in SF, portions were tiny (like traditional dim sum portions, though I'm not sure how the taste would be) and we were being charged an extra $17.50 just to store a tiny cake in the fridge. And some waiter had the audacity while we were deciding whether or not we even wanted to stay to come by where we were standing and haughtily say, "yeah it's not your typical Chinatown dim sum." Okay what? My friend and I are actually Chinese (none of the staff we had interacted with were people of color), and that came off extremely rude, as if they were insinuating Burlington dim sum could top authentic Chinese dim sum, and also that white people made our food better than how people of our own culture could? WHAT. Yeah we collected our cake and left. We ended up at a second restaurant where we got fantastic service, and a free drink since it was my birthday. Normally I give places a second chance when posting a poor review but I'm not sure if this place deserves one. read more

We visited from Boston, MA for the weekend and were told to eat at A Single Pebble and try the mock eel. We made reservations for 6:45pm on a Saturday and once we arrived, we were promptly seated. From the outside, the restaurant looks like a tiny establishment but once inside, the seating area stretches across many rooms. We had Alex as a waitress and she was attentive and friendly. We were stuffed from earlier that day but couldn't pass up ordering the following: mock eel ($9), roasted pork ($9), dumplings ($8), and pork fried rice ($12). The mock eel looks so much like eel, it's incredible. It's deep fried then seasoned with hoison sauce, soy sauce, garlic, and sugar. It was a little too sweet for my liking but definitely a must try. Everything else that was ordered was okay, nothing too memorable. The one complaint we had was the fried rice was very wet so we had to mix some white rice with the dish to even out the wetness and flavor (very sweet as well). 3 stars for food but 5 stars for the service. read more

Overrated! This has always been a special celebratory spot for our family. It's been a few years since we dined here due to Covid, but our memory of A Single Pebble was always very positive. We found the food to be very good, and the prices reasonable. We had previously enjoyed the chef's sampler menu and as a family of 4, it worked out to be about $50 a person (reasonable for a "special" meal). Tonight, we enjoyed the same menu, (different dishes but the exact same idea, and the price much to our surprise was almost double!! There were no prices listed for this so, while it really was on us to ask, ... We assumed it would be about $200 but honestly, it was almost $100 per person!! I have to say, if I am going to eat at that price point, I want the food to be extraordinary and while it was good, it was definitely not worth what we paid tonight. Nestled among a few houses on Bank Street, this place is easy to miss. Overall, it was pretty solid Chinese food, although nothing spectacular for the price. I would recommend going with a large group. If you want to splurge, the tasting menu offers 9 dishes at $38 per person. The food was greasier and sweeter than I would have liked overall. We go to Single Pebble frequently. We always go in time for the tasting menu, so fun when you have 4, 4 or 10 people! Dishes are all served family style and you never know what you'll get, but it is always good! Pro tip: Sunday's are Dim Sum, passed by small plate.
