    Hot Caramel Apple Pie
    Doc P.

Oh what's in a name? Well, I'll tell you what, A Slice of Goodness is very fitting because that is exactly what their pie is... a slice of goodness. It's so good to know where you can get a delicious slice of pie a la mode that will just warm your soul and the ladies that work there are so friendly and take such good care of customers, made me feel right at home. What are you doing still reading this review? Go on and get you a slice :)

The dining room is small, very open, and features lots of natural light from the windows.

Since 1985, A Slice of Goodness has been offering "family hospitality" to diners who crave delicious sandwiches, soup, salads, and especially PIES! A Slice of Goodness specializes in-made-from-scratch pies, and over the years, they've achieved quite a reputation for their delicious pies, and they've become the go-to pie shop in Roseville, for pies, just like mom used to make. It's late Friday morning, November 05, 2021, and I've arrived at A Slice of Goodness, located in Roseville, CA, on Douglas Blvd., east of downtown. The restaurant is open only Tuesday through Friday, from 10:30 in the morning until 2:00 in the afternoon, but the hours can vary, so if you're visiting from out of town, you should consider calling ahead. As you enter the front door, you come into an odd little hall, and go through another door before you actually enter the dining room. There are a couple of couches for your comfort, in case the dining room is full. The dining room is small, very open, and features lots of natural light from the windows. Furniture is tables, and the decor couldThe small dining room features many knick-knacks, homestyle pictures, and family photos. On this late Friday morning, there was only one other table seated, as the restaurant was doing a brisk business with phone and take-out orders. I overheard the staff talking with a customer who ordered six pies! As you enter the restaurant, you'll be greeted by the selection of pies that are offered today. The pie menu lists a wide variety of pies, but in reality, only a few are offered every day, and are listed on the white board, as the selection changes from day to day. There is also a board that lists the soup and quiche of the "day," along with daily specials. From the "Combos" section of the menu, I went with "Sandwich and Pie," as when you're at A Slice of Goodness, no meal is complete without a slice of their pie! "Ham and Turkey" was my sandwich selection, which always works great for a late Friday morning lunch in early November. The menu describes this selection as, "A half sandwich (club 'Goodness' excluded) served with potato salad, plus a slice of pie (specialty pie extra.)" The menu describes the "Ham and Turkey" sandwich as, "Generous slices of ham and turkey, served with Swiss cheese, tomato and fresh sprouts." Like all sandwich selections, my meal included my choice of "Potato Salad" or "Homemade Applesauce," with sourdough, rye, wheat or white being the bread choices. I chose "Potato Salad" as my side, and sourdough as my bread of choice. This was a large "half sandwich" which included two thick, tender slices of turkey, and two slices of ham. This isn't the kind of meat that you find at one of your national sandwich chains, as this meat was thick, fresh, and premium in every way. A couple slices of Swiss cheese added creamy goodness, and the whole sandwich was enhanced by fresh tomato slices, sprouts and a leaf of romaine lettuce. All of this goodness was placed between two freshly-baked pieces of sourdough bread. One bit into this amazing sandwich, and you were rewarded with a TASTE SENSATION and you could actually taste all ingredients, and they all worked together for an amazing sandwich. This isn't your supermarket deli sandwich, as this is a premium, one-of-a-kind sandwich! I chose potato salad as my side, as I absolutely have never met a potato salad that I don't love, and today I wasn't disappointed. Like everything else at the cafe, the scoop of potato salad is made in-house, from quality ingredients, and you can taste the goodness! The potatoes were cubed, cooked tender, yet a little firm, and the sauce was tangy, and held the delicious salad together. It was great! The meal included a peeled "baby" carrot, a slice of pineapple, a dill pickle slice, resting on a leaf of romaine lettuce. I made short work of the veggies, including the lettuce leaf, and only left a thin piece of pineapple rhine and the toothpick on my plate. The pie... oh... the pie! From the several choices of pies on today's menu, I simply "had " to go with apple, as it's one of my favorites, and a true slice of "Americana" any way you look at it. The pie of pie was a decent size - I'd guess an eighth of a pie - and it made for the perfect ending for my lunch. The delicious sweet, yet tart apples and filling, along with the delicate, flaky, pie crust, sprinkled with sugar made for an amazing slice of pie. I loved my "Sandwich and Pie Combo" lunch, as both the sandwich and the pie were simply amazing! I had difficulty rating this restaurant, as both the food and the service is five stars. But the "price of admission" is high... really high! $14.75 for a half sandwich, a slice of apple pie, and a glass of icewater? Really... So, I just HAD to deduct a star, because of the really, really excessive price. If you can afford the price of lunch, I highly recommend this fine restaurant.

No one does pie and quiche like slice of goodness. Family and locally owned. It's the only place you can order a home made banana coconut cream pie. Reminds me of my Grammy's recipe.

The sweetest ladies, the most delicious pies...this place is a gem. Love the cream pies!

The pies (I tried 2 and a crumble type) were good, I just have a hard time paying 10$ for a slice (average size).

My initial visit I ordered from their "vintage" menu. I got Erik's B.L.A.S.T. with bacon, Arcadian lettuce, avocado, clover sprouts, Secret Goo and tomato on toasted sourdough. They accidentally forgot the clover sprouts on my order. I love sprouts, so I was a bit disappointed when I realized they were missing. However the sandwich was great so it didn't ruin the meal. I loved their special tuna sandwich, called the Ocean Avenue, which was a delicious concoction. Made with tuna salad, cucumbers, onions, tomatoes, clover sprouts, and sweet hot mustard on swirl rye bread. The ingredients were all fresh & tasty. Another winner I just consumed was the Ciao Down, made with the softest Dutch Crunch I've ever eaten. I appreciated having the roof of my mouth intact! The combination of ingredients (salami, turkey, Swiss, tomato, onions, clover sprouts, basil pesto) gave me salty, vinegary, sour, and savory, with just a mild spicy kick from the hot cherry peppers. Whatever you do, don't skip the carrot cake! It is the best carrot cake I've ever had. I actually wondered if they outsourced it, but it turns out it's a proprietary family recipe. Made with carrots, pineapples, cream cheese frosting, and walnuts. It tastes homemade and perfectly balanced.

It has avocado, cheese, and mayo. For a pastrami sandwich purist, it might not sound good, but it was so flavorful, and even my husband loved it, and he's one of the pastrami purist and not a fan of mayo. That says a lot. We also tried the hot roast beef with cheddar cheese that came with an au jus for dipping. So dang good! I love the beach and Hawaii theme, of course.
