    A1 Diner from the street

Loved this place! Had blueberry waffles and homemade corned beef hash and it was all yummy. The staff was friendly and kept the great coffee coming. And you can't beat eating in an old train/trolley car!

Driving through the cute little town of Gardiner, Maine, situated next to a stream and placed on stilts so that it can reach the side walk is the time capsule known as the A1 diner! You must stop and eat! Prices are fair and the food is amazing. On a recent Sunday we stopped in for a late breakfast and we're not disappointed! Upon entering, we were faced with a counter with stools that looked right out of by-gone era. We sat down at the counter and ordered. I ordered the eggs Benedict that was served with mixed salad greens and home fries! I can't recall ever being served mixed salad greens with breakfast. What a treat! She had a mushroom omelet with toast and homefries that was thoroughly enjoyed. Both of our plates were heaped with delicious food that will definitely bring us back the next time we are in the area!

    Cute little place.

I was kind of excited to come in here for breakfast, but was really disappointed. The Service was outstanding, the ambience was pretty cool, but the breakfast was not good. I ordered my eggs over medium, but they came out burnt, the potatoes were dry and look like they've been sitting there for a while. I would not recommend A1dinnerfor breakfast.

Simply the best. Not a diner in any way except for appearances. Top notch dinners and desserts. My favorite place in the area.

The service was great. Very attentive and efficient. The food was as great. My party had a variety of items, from the beet & goat cheese salad, deviled eggs, pancetta and Brussels sprouts, cheeseburger, and BLT with Lobster. Everything was high quality and delicious. The fries which came on the side of the burgers and sandwiches were also excellent. The restaurant has a nice outdoor space but the weather was a little rainy the day we went so we didn't sit outside. I do suggest they add more barriers and greenery/plants to separate the beautiful outdoor seating space from the parking lot across the way.

We shared the street fries to start (YUM) and I opted for the French onion soup as my starter. We then each had a fish dish, the haddock almondine and stuffed salmon, and we ate in silence because that's how delish they both were. Finally we had the chocolate lava cake which was just okay, but that's fine because we were so full from the rest of our meal! The staff is incredibly friendly, and though the space is small it wasn't too loud or cramped. And the igloos outside looked so cool - would definitely be worth visiting on a snowy day!

Two in our party had the clam chowder and agreed that it was the best chowder they've ever had. These two order chowder wherever they go. They also had the calamari which they said was excellent as well. The scallops appetizer was GF and was unbelievable. I have a gluten allergy so I had the haddock without breadcrumbs. It was very, very good. I did not get sick, so they get five stars for that. The service was excellent. The vibe was relaxed and friendly. We enjoyed our visit immensely.

While our service was wonderful the energy in the place has changed. It's becoming another basic restaurant with flashy dishes that are just ok. They have an amazing wood fired grill but the food had barely any hint of what that provides to the flavor. Plus our oysters were dry, like they'd been shucked hours before. Unacceptable being a stones throw from the source. I don't know if it's new ownership not knowing how special it was but it's no longer the River House we came to love.
