Did a large catering order for my baby shower and everyone LOVED the food. Everyone kept asking where is this from?! I called to place my order about a week prior and they called the morning of my event to confirm the order. We had 45 guests but also knew we wanted plenty of left overs. We ordered 1 pan of BBQ chicken, 1/2 pan mochiko chicken, 1/2 pan BBQ short ribs (cut into pieces), 1/2 pan kahlua pork, 1/2 pan steamed rice, 1 pan Mac salad and 20 spam musubi. Food arrived hot, mac salad cold and were able to go into party warmers and stayed at good temps for the entire 5 hours of the party without drying out. I probably could have ordered less BBQ chicken but ended up doing frozen meal prepping for when the baby gets here. They threw in some Malasada (donut type pastry) and they were SO good. Fluffy and dusted with sugar. Wish we had ordered some more, big hit. We knew we liked the takeout meals we've ordered before but they handled our catering order great. I've waited 2 years for this place to open since it's down the street from my house. Although I know how to cook pretty much what's on the menu, I still like to dine out with friends and family. Some might complain that these guys aren't Hawaiian, or as good as when you visit the islands. I totally get it because I'm picky also, and I miss flying to the islands to get ono da kine grindz. I even have a favorite hole in the wall place on maui! But this is Kent WA y'all. We don't have much when it comes to authentic anything. So I'm thankful that we have this small mom, and pop shop we locals can support. First off they're cordial, amazing customer service, they remember me every time I would visit this establishment. I've visited three times already, and have invited several people to dine here. Some of us plan to support these guys at least once a week. I try to order different items on the menu. This way I know which ones I like, and which ones I won't order because I'm spoiled, and I can cook it myself. So I just order something else. On a cold day the saimin bowl hits the spot. The malasadas aren't like Leonard's on Oahu, but still pretty good. The Keikis love it for sure. I enjoyed the kahlua pork bowl. I just ordered a small one, and I was still able to eat it for lunch the next day. This past Sunday a group of island people were dining here. I guess they come once a week too! I saw this place getting built out for a few months, so I had to pop in when I noticed that they recently opened for business. I'm always down to try a Hawaiian plate lunch! I got my order of mixed BBQ to go, and my plate came with 2 scoops of rice and 1 scoop of mac salad. The BBQ was delicious and I thought that they did a fairly good job. The interior is a bit lacking but I don't blame them for not decorating that much since I doubt there's a ton of dine in business during the pandemic. They seemed to have several to go orders ready when I pulled up for mine, and the staff seemed very friendly and kind. These portions are great! A lot of their menu offer mini or regular sized portions. The regular sized portions are generous! We have tried the mochiko chicken, chicken katsu curry, garlic chicken (fried), and loco moco. All their chicken dishes have tasted great so far. I love that the fried garlic chicken also had pieces of fried chicken skin! The only thing that seems pretty basic is the mac salad. I can't hate coz it is what it is, but other places I've been to usually put some sort of protein (like tuna or spam) in it for texture or additional taste. They also have a punch card! I love punch cards! We can't wait to visit and try other dishes off of their menu! I want to try some of their seafood options next time. Food was ready at decent timing, and the worker/owner gave a heads up on how long it might take, which was fine. Chicken looked crispy, but omg it was sooo bland! Seems like it wasn't seasoned at all. Absolutely no garlic taste. I even tried with the sauce that it comes with, but the sauce itself seemed sooo watered down that I can faintly even taste the garlic. Luckily, there was katsu sauce to save the day. As for the Mac salad, every couple bites, I had straight up mush. Idk if they put chunks of cheese or if it was a few overcooked macaroni, but either way it wasn't pleasant. The banana lumpia was good. Can't go wrong since it's literally 3 ingredients. Wrapper, banana and jackfruit. Unless they added sugar, then 4. We ordered delivery on a Sunday evening so I can't speak to the interior or the service, just the food we received. The portion sizes were good and arrived well packaged. I tried the chicken platter with BBQ Chicken, Katsu Chicken and Chicken Mochico. The sauces and coatings used to prepare all 3 were delicious and the all the chicken seemed to be cooked properly. I was surprised to see the skin on the BBQ chicken and found it to be very unappetizing. The biggest problem was that all of the chicken cuts themselves were done with little care for quality. There was a lot of fat and gristle that had to be worked around. The pieces were too large to easily navigate using just a plastic spork. In the end, I wasn't able to eat about 1/2 of the BBQ Chicken because the cut was so poor and the skin wasn't appealing. Honestly, the real highlight for me was the macaroni salad! I REALLY enjoyed that and was so happy that I ordered extra. My wife ordered a BBQ beef and chicken combo and had pretty much the same experience. Great flavor, well cooked, but poor cuts of meat. Her beef was almost 1/2 fat and mostly inedible. Overall, it has potential, but the staff has to care about the product they are sending out. Portion size is substantial, but taste can be lacking. However, I do appreciate that the food is not over-salty like some other Hawaiian places. I've tried the BBQ mix plate which was a hit or miss for me on flavor and texture of the meat... The chicken Katsu had a nice crunchy crust, but the chicken itself was dry... The Mochiko chicken was bland the time I ordered it... and the loco moco was... different; I think I need to go back and try it again... But the mac salad is solid. My husband ordered a regular combo plate. First thing is that the mini is actually regular size and the regular is huge! Portions are large so we took a lot home. Thats said, I was hoping for a bit more flavor on the Kalua pork and maybe more pork/less cabbage. My husband's food was good, but could've used a bit more char on the short ribs. Macaroni Salad & rice; cover them with spare ribs, chicken & pork; maybe some curry or a beef patty with brown gravy that blends the dish into a perfect harmony. This isn't to ignore Lau-Lau, Loco Moco or Spam Musubi - these are also my favorite things. #1 Hawaiian Barbecue (#1 is part of the name), has all of these items prepared to perfection. The meats are well cooked, properly but gently seasoned. However, you need something special to hit 5 stars. Consistent quality is close to enough to move from 4 to 5 stars, "full coverage" of the the cuisine is another nicety. But what pushed them to 5 stars was the Keto Plates served with eggs over easy. Great place if you you are in the mood for some Hawaiian BBQ. First thing that I noticed is that the prices and the portions are reasonable, which is becoming harder to find. I feel like I got a large amount of food for how much I paid. The short ribs were a little fatty but good. The shrimps were good too. The fish was just OK macaroni salad was a little heavy on the dressing. The salad was very plain. The rice was good and the sauces were good. Tried the banana lumpia for dessert. Was very good they cooked it perfectly! Not the best Hawaiian food I have ever had but it is good for the Kent / Covington area. Place is very clean and well-kept just open so things are fairly new.
