Very nice people. Generous portion. My favorite thing we ordered was the crab rangoon. Tasted made in-house and was crunchy-creamy delicious (sorry! Ate them so fast no picture). We had the spicy and regular chicken teriyaki, regular portion (there are 3 size options). Lots of chicken and a pretty good serving of well cooked broccoli. The sauces were ok... but there is a layer of cheese over the rice. I will order without the cheese next time. Just don't need those added calories. read more

This place is a little hard to get into and out. Such a friendly Korean lady. They have a Korean fried chicken sandwich but we stuck with trying teriyaki for our first time. We got the large without realizing how large it was. Definitely shareable. Next time we will go smalled. The broccoli was cooked perfectly. She said beef teriyaki was like the bulgogi meat. While I ordered it to go and didn't get straight home, by the time I started eating, the food was warm as I expected but I had a bite of chicken that was ice cold and that was when my concern set it. Their host stand isn't a stand at all - it's a dohyō, and you must perform at least one proper stomp before being seated. Their signature "Grand Champion Chicken" comes with a side of ritualistic salt throwing, and if you don't properly purify your dining area before eating, the server (dressed in traditional gyoji referee attire) will blow their whistle and make you start over. I've seen grown adults cry trying to perfect their pre-meal ceremonies just to get some spicy chicken. The mandatory mawashi fitting room (yes, MANDATORY) features full-length mirrors and helpful illustrations demonstrating proper wrapping technique. Their "No Mawashi, No Munchies" policy is strict but fair. Special Addendum: To the customer who asked if they could "just wear the top part" - first of all, how dare you, and secondly, this isn't amateur hour at the casual Friday sumo social. Final Thought: Never has the fusion of combat sports and casual dining been so beautifully executed. It's like if a sumo stable opened a restaurant but took the dress code VERY seriously. They've got generous portions, delicious flavors, and reasonable prices (especially if you consider getting several meals from one large bowl, or remember that Bellevue is just a scant 10 miles north with much higher prices.) I found this on my way to visiting family and am so glad I did. The owner is so nice and grateful for his customers and the food follows suit. The teriyaki was flavorful and great quality. I care a lot about the veggies in my teriyaki and the broccoli that's included in each of the bowls was cooked to perfection. The portions are also so generous. We had a spicy chicken bowl, a chicken teriyaki bowl, and chicken yakisoba and the serving was enough to feed three toddlers and a grown adult. Me and my buddies would stop by this place in the summer after fishing the Cedar River and have been stopping by periodically ever since. Sumo Teriyaki is a nice little place on the side of Maple Valley HW. We were the only people eating in, for most of our meal, and then another family came in. There was however a steady flow, and sometimes a line, for carry-out pick -up. The food was delicious. First stop in here last night. I drive by 5 days a week. I ordered the large chicken teriyaki and the chicken fried rice. Fried rice was good. Teriyaki was white meat and a good amount. Sauce was very good. Not too salty and just sweet enough. It came with some nicely cooked broccoli. I was not expecting that. The rice in the bottom of the bowl was different. Seems like it was cooked in the bowl and I can swear there is Mayo in it. Not bad, but not traditional. Was not expecting that. If I had to choose, I would go with plain white rice rather than the amended white rice. Overall, the reason I went was the Teriyaki and it is worth a repeat for sure. I ordered on site, it took about 14 minutes to make the two dishes. They brought it out to my car where I sat and listened to the Mariners while waiting. read more

Food is definitely one star. Rice was wet and overcooked then covered with some cheap flavorless cheese. Chicken had a weird texture and the sauce was pretty bad. (Spicy chicken bowl). It reminds me of this really bad chain they have in Arizona and Nevada. Only this is much worse. It really has no business being in the Seattle area. Go anywhere else for your teriyaki needs. I've been coming here for the last 4-5 months and let me say this: I love this place. Everytime I come in im treated with such kindness. In terms of food, the spicy chicken teriyaki and the katsu chicken are great. The cheese on the rice adds such a great touch to it. I haven't seen many teriyaki places do that. Saw this new restaurant open up on my way to work and wanted to give it a try. Got the largest option of spicy teriyaki and it was delicious.
