I went to this establishment many years ago when it was called 285 Soulfood. The food was great then and it is great now. After seeing recent reviews online for the newer place, A1 Soul Food I decided to give it a try when I was in the area during lunch time. The area is a bit sketchy. It shares a lot with an vacant Dollar Tree & a few other businesses. Lock your car & be aware of your surroundings because you never know what you may see. That is honestly the way to be anywhere on MLK drive. When you get inside, the place is set up cafeteria line style with booths for dining in if you choose too. The prices are listed on the wall and they serve breakfast and lunch/dinner food with the prices listed clearly on the wall and daily specials also. You order by standing in line & they place your food into a styrofoam box & you can eat it there or take it home. I opted to take mine to go. I waited in line for about ten minutes which I hear is good for this place. I honestly did not know what I was going to order until I saw the fresh fried pork chops come out (please see my picture). Not only did they look fresh, but they were big, crispy & well seasoned. The meat only option included two and the price was more than right. A1 Soul Food is one of those places that has truly stood the test of time for me This is real, down-home cooking--like a Sunday dinner any day of the week. So on the search for my Soul Food Haven, after hearing a pile of amazing things through social media. I decided this had to be an unmistakable slam dunk. With visitors in tow all the way from NOLA we made the trek all the way to Bankhead for a true ATL memory. The ambiance was to be expected from a counter space. I came here on my lunch break and waited 45 minutes to get my food. There were two people working the line, someone at the register, and others in the kitchen. It took so long to get my food because everyone was ordering multiple plates for others. I got two turkey wings (it comes that way), mac, and broccoli casserole. My first and last time....couldn't believe how long the line was for this crap....the food is not seasoned like they say....git turkey wings and pork chops....the turkey wings looks to have seasoning on them but are very bland and the gravy is green...never had green gravy...the gravey they had to put on dressing was also green( look like throw up) pork chop over cooked very hard and dry....mac & cheese is white...give it a 3.....dressing ....give it a 2...veggies horrible over cooked and soggy....the server sat the pork chop pan on top of the bake chicken. When scrolling through UberEats, I've seen A1 Soulfood pop up several times, but didn't pay it much attention until a friend told me to try it. When I want good soul food, I typically drive down to south Atlanta, but after seeing that A1 was on my side of town, I was elated. I decided to try them one Sunday afternoon to get the "Sunday dinner" fix from my childhood. My friend told me to get there early as the line can be super long on Sundays. I got there around 2:45 and the line was wrapped around the dining area. Very long, but not as bad as I was expecting. It took about 30 minutes for me to make it to the front of the line. I ordered the fried catfish dinner which comes with two fillets, two sides, and a piece of cornbread. For my sides, I chose macaroni and cheese and candied yams and got an additional side of collard greens. Fish is fried to order, so I had to wait about 10-15 minutes for it to be ready. The food smelled sooo good on the drive home that I couldn't wait to get in and try it. The catfish was fried and seasoned to perfection, the macaroni and cheese was some of the best I've ever had from a restaurant, and the collard greens were just perfect. The candied yams were okay but had a bit more cinnamon than I like and the cornbread wasn't the best - it was really dense, which was slightly upsetting as cornbread is my favorite. Overall, A1 lived up to its name! I'll definitely be back to try some more options. Also, social distancing is being practiced in line and masks are required to enter. read more

I really like A-1 the Mac and cheese is good the kale greens good, rice and gravy good and yams good and a light piece of corn bread good-- hubby usually gets meat ox tails, turkey wings etc and he goes back so it's gotta be good. My only issues are: 1-the health score so many people eat at this place continuously so please get the health score up. Last to E I was there it was a 81... B but you can do better.... 2-it's a sauna in the building invest in some good air conditioning we spend enough money in there at least make sure the customers are comfortable.
