Right off the top here: the Japanese milk bread is worth the price of admission on its own. And while we weren't there for happy hour, we did get a look at the menu because the time was right - and we did get a happy hour drink before dinner - the wife and are certain we could gorge ourselves stupid and require an Uber home on the Happy Hour menu alone and spend like, under $150 for both of us. We started with the Beef Tartare Sando which was out of this world. We also got oysters and the Wagyu Yakitori off the HH menu, and everything was straight up divine. Moving into dinner I was able to snag the American Wagyu Burnt Ends which aren't on the menu, but they only have some of the time. It came with a couple of slices of the Japanese milk bread, a couple of small sides - and we got some whipped potatoes and broccolini. My wife dove into the Tenderloin with a bordelaise sauce. Honestly could not have been happier with everything. Food was top notch, service was very casual and friendly. We had everything we needed and never waited for anything. A5 is part of a larger local restaurant group with many different concepts. A5 is a higher end steak house. We made our way here for happy hour which is 3:30-5:30. I had my eye on a couple things and just wanted to check everything out in general. The oysters are half price on HH ($2.50) and they are good! I also love they have Manhattans on draft for $10 on HH. I had to try the burger also, but it was very underwhelming. The burger to bun ratio is off and at $13 (on HH) not worth it. If they would include the fries, maybe. But the fries are an extra $5!! Wow. I really wanted the beef tartare Katsu sandwich and had to wait until 5:00 to order it as it's on the dinner menu (as an appetizer) and not available to order until then. This is also a must order. Service was pretty good. I would probably go back for HH, but overall I think it's spendy. read more

I generally don't delay writing a review too long from the time of the actual dining visit (Jan '24) but a very recent conversation about this venue reminded me of the need to write one. I happened to be discussing dining options to a couple who recently moved here from San Diego, CA and the husband had dined at A5 Steakhouse and our assessments were spot on. I dined at the bar, having a couple of cocktails, and decided on their Bavette entry with added Whipped Potatoes and side of Au Poivre. Downtown eateries I expect to pay premium prices and to that point A5 doesn't miss its mark. However, I also expect above average service and taste. Personally, I felt the service was relatively slow and lacking while the entry was sub-par at best. In my original posting I failed to mention my utter surprise at the 20% "Service Charge" applied to the ENTIRE check amount. I feel the backhouse staff should receive a fair pay rate for their services, however I think the restaurant should compensate the kitchen staff accordingly in their wages, if it means raising the prices to patrons at least it's a bit more discernible. To A5's credit; a disclaimer of this practice is provided on their website, however I visited because I was in the area and had not read this prior to dining. "A5 is a service-included restaurant; the service charge is distributed to the staff in an equitable manner. Additional gratuity is appreciated, but not required" In short there's just too many other dining options in the downtown and nearby suburban areas that offer a much better meal and bang for your buck! read more

I didn't know what to think of this place when we got there - the menu is like an Asian Steakhouse - but I was really impressed. We tried several different things - the hamachi appetizer, the Korean steak wrap, salad, bacon fried rice, bavette steak (with the best chimichurri I've ever had), French fries and scallops. Everything had good flavor and was unique - not something you will find everywhere. They have a solid cocktail and wine list as well. Our server regularly checked in on us and was incredibly nice and the ambiance is pretty casual and not a stuffy steakhouse. Denver needed this, a hip steakhouse that hits so many fine notes. I loved my steak and poivre sauce, and the vibe in here is so darned cool. My steak was cooked perfectly, like seriously, how on earth do they do it perfect? Sous vide? Don't know? Loved everything I ate and can't wait to go back for more! Let me preface this review by saying that after a certain price point with food, I become a harsher critic, so it might be more deserving of 3 stars. Girlfriend and I went here for an early Valentines dinner. The ambiance was very loud. We had a hard time hearing each other from across the table. There was some very loud rock classic rock music playing. The music itself was fine, but the volume was an issue. To start we ordered the beef tartare sando. It was decent but very onion heavy. You couldn't really get a strong taste of the beef with how much onion was used which I feel like should not be the case with tartare. We split the house salad which was fine, but nothing to write home about. Had a bit of a strong bitter taste to it. For sides we ordered the Japanese milk bread and mac and cheese croquettes. Both good, but again nothing that impressive. Hot bread is always good, and it was just that, hot bread. And then for the entrees we shared the tenderloin steak and Denver cut of steak, both ordered med rare. The Denver steak was cooked perfectly and was solid, but the tenderloin was probably closer to medium if not med well. Again, everything here was fine, but at a certain price I expect my food to wow me just a little bit. For an over $300 meal, I would have been just as satisfied with the food itself if I had gone to Texas Roudhouse. I don't think I could recommend this restaurant when there are better downtown places to go. read more

Very cool place. Loved the decor and the music. Our waiter Tad was awesome. Super helpful, and just the right amount of attentiveness. We started with the hamachi crudo and the wedge salad. Both were great. I'm not a fan of any kind of blue cheese dressing so I asked for a side of something else, and Tad kindly accommodated. The hamachi crudo was fresh and delicious. For dinner I had the tenderloin and it was absolutely perfect. My partner had the Denver steak which was also amazing. We shared the carrots and a side of mushrooms which was on special. Everything was incredible. I had a very nice glass of wine and my partner had several vodka gimlets which were made very nicely. The only thing I would change about this experience is I'd skip ordering the sauces for the steaks. They were great as is, and the chimichurri I got didn't look like the normal green chimichurri. It was pretty oily and had a dark orange color. I will say though, the bordelaise that my partner got was rich and decadent and delicious - but the steak simply just didn't need it! Overall, great experience. Outside of the fact that we don't tend to want to hang out downtown and prefer other neighborhoods, this restaurant is a gem. We will definitely be back. read more

I seriously don't know where to begin. Ok I'll begin with Heather, the manager, she was awesome and visited our table several times to make sure we were happy. And we were! I'm just going to show you all the food we got. My nephew ordered for the table so we had a little bit of everything. It was freaking unbelievable. We went to A5 for a birthday dinner. Wonderful atmosphere: they had 2 levels for seating and just about every table was taken. Highly recommend getting a reservation at least a week or two in advance. We sat upstairs which was neat cause we could oversee the whole place. Our server was awesome. We asked about the steak cut options and he gave us a great walk through and super honest about what he would recommend when I asked about the Denver vs Tenderloin. We got the poutine for an appetizer plus the Japanese Milk Bread Rolls and whipped mash potatoes sides to share and a steak each. Everything was delicious, however next time I would opt for something other than the poutine. So disappointing. The food is mediocre, to say it politely. Cold whipped potatoes were served - and we specially asked that they be served at least warm. An overly sour umami aioli for the French fries, way too much acidity in the tempura eggplant side dish accompanied by fatty, fried eggplant slices. A poorly presented tasteless burger and steak Tatar. Both were nothing but ordinary. The steak Tatar was presented being smashed between 2 slices of bread. If I want to eat a sandwich, I go somewhere else. The food was poorly presented and off-tasting overall. We returned more than half of our food because it was not enjoyable at all, and we left hungry without ordering mains. Our waiter wasn't motivated, although the table section where we sat wasn't busy. This "dinner experience" was a waste of money. All I wanted for vday was a meal at A5 and we were lucky enough to snag a dinner reservation for Feb 14. And hot damn! The vibes in here are FUN! Tropical and bright and not at all stuffy. Service was wonderful from the host stand to the bar to the table. The menu isn't too extensive (which I appreciate), but the items on there are definitely unique. The Beef Tartare Katsu Sando is 99% the reason why I was called into A5 and it did NOT disappoint. That bread is soft and delicious and the beef tartare with quail egg and shallot was wonderful and seasoned well. We also tried the Crabby French Toast which was yummy. I have my eyes on that Poutine for next time, though. My rib-eye loving self was surprised to not see any of this on the menu, so the hubs and I decided instead on the 300z Bone-in NY strip (meant to share) and it was pretty divine. I will say, we ordered another 30(ish) oz steak meant for 2 at another restaurant not too long ago for double the price, so this actually isn't a terrible idea. Cooked medium rare and of course, we got this Chef Max Style which adds grilled and roasted alliums AND roasted bone marrow - I mean, you gotta? And really, you can't go to a restaurant called A5 without ordering their Japanese A5 Wagyu. A 4oz piece will run you $85, but the melt-in-your-mouth tenderness of quality Japanese wagyu will always be worth it. Their sides are also pretty great: the Macaroni & Cheese Croquettes were thick, crisp and delicious. Whipped potatoes were creamy, though a tad too herby for me (i forget what herb was in there... rosemary?), and we randomly ordered the Japanese Milk Bread Rolls which were maybe my fave side - SO GOOD. While this place wasn't by any means empty with a work event occurring on the small upper level of the restaurant it was apparent the weather discouraged some from visiting. The menu is the perfect balance of variety and uniqueness along with traditional steak house items. The flavor of each dish is so delicately perfect. From the leaks to the steak each item left you wanting more yet so delightfully satisfied by the flavorful bite. The drink menu was minimal but tasty. Happy, happy, joy, joy. For real though. When I first read about A5 Steakhouse, they had me at tartare sandwich. After tonight, they can consider me a huge fan, proclaimer, and sold. Let's hit the highlights first. This is a real toss up for me between the TARTARE SANDO and the 4oz serving of A5 wagyu. Both are shining stars in their own right. Upon first bite of the tartare, I looked up and smiled. The taste was perfection; flavor that didn't overpower the meat but enhanced it. The texture was on point; slightly crisped bread, tender beef, crunchy bits of goodness, soft quail egg. Simply heavenly. Then you've got the A5 - it's exactly what you want. Medium rare, perfectly seasoned crust and finished with salt. There was an accompanying sauce but it wasn't necessary. I did dip a piece of a piece in it to try, but it just seemed wrong. (Read: the sauce was REALLY good; the meat was just *chef's kiss*) We ordered a couple other starters: chef's selection of OYSTERS (kumomoto, wellfleet, and 4 others I don't remember) and chicken confit POUTINE with sage gravy. I mean, C'MON!! The poutine consisted of what I consider to be "fat fries", delicious gravy, and then surprise players: chicharron and slightly pickled red onion. Oh yeah. It's good. No, we're not done. Sides were ordered because, when one is embracing a new restaurant, it's what one does. (Don't worry, leftovers came home!) MACARONI AND CHEESE CROQUETTES were the lovechild of a mozzarella stick and arancini. The bed of Italian pepper and tomato jam was a lovely elevated accompaniment. ROASTER CAULIFLOWER was chock full of flavor and should not be slept on. There's a lovely non-overpowering heat in the sauce that was devine. CHILI CRAB FRIED RICE was also quite good and a solid serving for two people or maybe four if you're doing a few sides to share. The overall flavors of everything were quite an homage to a few cultures while staying true to being a steakhouse. The cocktail menu is playful but not super impressive. But I'm super snobby about drinks. I had the BEES KNEES which, while a more classic cocktail, was my favorite because of the subtle oats flavor. The GIMLET is anything but simple. Cinnamon, almond and ginger notes? These are both seasonal, so get 'em while they're hot. NEVER SAY DIE was not what I expected. When I think of rums, juices and honey, it's not this well balanced. FREEZER GIBSON and MANHATTAN were classic. Next time, we're gonna sit at the bar to see the entire offering and see what else can be made. Ambiance is very cool. I'm not even entirely sure how to describe the style. See pics for a taste. COVID: yeah, it's a pandemic. They require proof of vaccination which I appreciate since it's indoor seating only. Still with me? SERVICE! Stellar. From start to finish, super pleased by everyone we encountered. For only being open for about 6 weeks, they were a well oiled machine. Was in town visiting my brother and his family while also spending time with friends. We chose to spend our Friday night splurge meal here at A5 since it's relatively new and been open since Nov 2021. First of all, they have a happy "hour" that runs from 3:30-5:30 every day. We had one friend flying in and due to an accident and a home Rockies game we had him take the light rail from DEN to Union Station and walk over. We got here and the bar was BUSY! The luck of our weekend continued here because three seats at the bar opened up as we arrived around 4:45. I jumped in with a margarita, we ordered a half dozen oysters that were discounted for $1.50 each. Accompanied with cocktail sauce with a side of freshly micro planed horseradish to fine tune your heat, and a red wine mignonette sauce with shallots, which I basically can inhale on its own- fantastic and happy we kept it only at 6 because it could have gone sideways easily. I absolutely had to try the Musso Farms Popcorn, which had micro planed parmesan on top, with sazon butter, and togarashi. For 2/4 in the group, they thought it was too spicy. Better for me since I didn't think it was too hot. So I enjoyed it, and when our last member showed up we had enough time for him to grab and old fashioned and we sat down at our table at 5:45 on the dot. Two of the bartenders that serviced our group, Xander and Megan, really nailed all our needs and all of the drinks were crushed. I can see how happy hour can be super busy, but they had enough people to handle the rush and still have time to chat with me about the food, history of the bar, and what food they liked off the menu. Cool, quick way to kick off our evening here. ***note to remember: they automatically add a 20% service fee to the check, so there is a split between all of the employees that are involved- so there was no need to close out the tab at the bar but I did it anyway since I didn't know.*** Since this was a splurge meal, we started off with a few appetizers: Chicken Yakitori, Poutine, Crabby French Toast, and Japanese Milk Bread rolls. It's obviously perfect on its own but I got more butter so it would kill us. The poutine was killer, the crabby French toast and chicken yakitori was all just beautifully played and flavorful. The bread came seasoned well and came warm to the table so the butter put this bread totally over the top. Everyone agreed that it needed no extras but the butter made it so heavenly we had another order with dinner! Entrees: one ordered halibut with a side of the citrus beurre blanc, one ordered Santa Maria Tri Tip with the A5 steak sauce, one went with the Denver Steak with a side of chimichurri sauce, and I had the A5 burger which was made with Wagyu so it was really rich, and the house made zucchini pickles really complimented the fattiness of the meat and caramelized onions had a great texture and flavor. We got a few sides, the second order of the milk bread that was again eaten in less than 1 minute, and the mac and cheese croquettes with a spicy tomato jam which was a superb side. Asparagus confit with house made furikaki, they were HUGE and reminded me of tree branches. I don't think anything made it, sides, entrees, apps. The poutine was still on the table and still was picked at over dinner until it was gone. Our server, Anne, was superb and we didn't need anything, ever. Everything was cooked exactly how we ordered it, and we were always topped off when waters were running low. Great recommendations helped us, and we loved the meal and she was a big part of it. I bet we could've ordered one of my favorite desserts ever, the Baked Alaska- but we overdid it with the happy hour, apps, entrees and sides just crushed us. This restaurant wasn't very busy and it was confounding to me. There was a home Rockies game, happy hour was so busy, and it could've been an off night, or people were more focused on happy hour and not an actual meal- but I really hope this was an anomaly because this food is worth coming all the way from Evergreen (where my brother lives now) to enjoy. We had a reservation, and had to push it out a couple of times due to a late flight/delayed getting back in - they were wonderful and accommodating which we super appreciated. Our server was great, and the table they seated us at was half booth/bench seating and chairs across from it. We started with the poutine fries with curry gravy, pot roast, pickled fresno and cheese curds - it was super tasty and generously portioned. I had a Manhattan - and loved that it comes with the rest of the shaker on ice - so very generously portioned. For dinner, I had the herb crusted lamb loin, which was cooked perfectly - and seasoned perfectly as well. For sides we had the asparagus and roasted mushrooms - which were both really good. We also had the poached halibut (great flavor), and the scallops, which was also really good. While this place is known for their steaks - the other menu items are just as good in my opinion. Spontaneously looked up this place to grab dinner before my Rod Stewart concert. I am so glad I came here. I walked in on a Tuesday night and the place was hoppin. I asked if I can just grab a seat at the bar, it looked very full, and the hostess was kind enough to show me a few open spots. I sat down and my bartender got me some water and a menu. I had him start me off with a lemon drop martini and 4 oysters. I also placed my dinner entree order which was the lettuce wrap. My lemon drop martini was perfect and my oysters came out and looked delicious! Yummy, yummy, yummy! (Clapping and jumping in my head, lol) it was different oysters and I can't remember where each one came from. All I know that it came from 'under the sea';) Lol The oysters tasted fantastic with the condiments on it. The condiments paired well and brought out very different flavors of the oysters. My dinner entree came out quickly after my oysters. My wagyu beef lettuce wrap came out sizzling hot and gorgeous. It was meant to sizzle and to be eaten! The lettuce wrap consists of kimchi, garlic, jalapeños, cucumbers, lettuce, sauce, and delicious wagyu beef. Oh my goodness, I have not had a lettuce wrap like this. I made my first wrap and the light shone down from heaven and I was in ecstasy. The flavors from the condiments and seasoned beef tantalized my tongue. Each flavor bursting as it danced around in my mouth and traveled to my stomach. So, so, damn delicious! Wow! I pretty much finished all the wagyu beef along with most of the lettuce wrap condiments. I was extremely happy. I then asked the bartender if they had a dessert menu because I wanted to get rid of the garlicy and spicy tasty from my mouth. I needed my breathe to smell like a lady, in case I meet someone;P Lol I got the crème brûlée. The crème brûlée came out and it was small or too big. It was a perfect size topped with this lemon shortcake of some sort with almonds and cherries. My gosh! That first bite of the crème brûlée was so creamy, light, and not overly sweet. YES! I devoured the whole dessert. I was so amazed at my dinner accomplishments this night as I pretty much finished everything I ordered! Lol I'm so proud of myself and came hungry. My dinner was fabulous and classy from beginning to end. Service was excellent. Ambiance is casual to classy. I most definitely will come back here again. read more

This is my 1st time at A5. What a great place!! I had gone to Run for the Roses in the underground at Milk Market for cocktails beforehand and needed something to sop up the rum. Their poutine ($17) with steak fries, chicken confit and chicarrons worked well. I then had their large house salad ($14) with pecans & marianated feta cheese. I then had a A5 waygu burger ($20) with butterkasse cheese and a glass of 2018 Terfethen red blend. For dessert, I had their Chocolate torte ($10) with coffee (served in a Chemex carafe). All staff wore masks. They require proof of vaccination to enter. Their entry has a small alcove past the front door enclosed in glass to keep out the cold air from the street. Very fun art on the walls, cows dressed in shirt and suits. The music is a mix of 60's,70's & 80's popular songs. read more

Great experience, I loved everything about this place! If you have a little extra $, this place is a real treat. Delicious, perfectly cooked steak, fun group shareable sides like crab fried rice, sunchokes, roasted cauliflower, fries with an umami aoli, whipped potatoes, and mac and cheese. We had the poutine appetizer which was both the most expensive and most delicious poutine I've ever had (I mean it's a Canadian/Midwest bar food), scallop aguachilie, and fried calamari with Thai chilis. All awesome and fun. We feasted, and everyone loved having their own protein and the shareable sides. You can get steak sauce on the house, or a number of tasty sounding sauces. And OMG the Japanese milk rolls... so so good. Tiki drinks were strong and tasty, and we got a bottle of wine for the table from an accessible list. I love the decor, it was funky, vibrant and charming. Bustling youngish croud, everyone looked like they were having a great time. Decent amount of veg/fish options, and I got the chicken Cordon Bleu that had caramelized onions and ham inside, was perfectly jucy. We were looking for a steakhouse with a unique menu and a good vibe. We found it at A5!! The Denver wagyu steak was tender and wonderfully seasoned and the Japanese buttermilk rolls were buttery with a hint of salt. Joseph our server was exceptional and we enjoyed working through the menu options to make the right decision for ordering. Ah and the chocolate mousse dessert was definitely worth the calories!! Another Yelper described this place as "lifechanging." My boyfriend and I were skeptical at first, but left using the same word. Vibes all day - this steakhouse has some of the best! Plants galore and excellent lighting. Prices are high but so, so worth it. They take reservations, have bar seating, and a community table for walk ins. Reminds me of San Francisco dining. I didn't know what A5 meant til I Googled it: "The highest yield grade and meat quality grade for Wagyu beef is A5, where A represents the yield grade, and 5 represents the meat quality grade. A5 Wagyu beef denotes meat with ideal firmness and texture, coloring, yield, and beef marbling score." We got braised greens (unreal), macaroni and cheese croquettes (best I've ever had - surprisingly light), steak (insanely amazing), Korean BBQ lettuce wraps (whoa, another level of good), black sesame ice cream (nice and light), and banana creme brûlée (didn't care for the cherries). They have 7 or so unique sauce options for your steak. The complementary A5 sauce was the best tasting over the chimichurri and nuoc Cham sauce, but the other sauces were still excellent. We took the sauces home with our leftovers and it has been the best to relive a piece of this excellent dining experience. They include a service fee that is split amongst kitchen staff so you don't have to tip. Nice! read more

Quant restaurant with charming decor (love the stain glass windows) and a great bar. The service was great from everybody on the staff. The menu provides a nice twist to the classic items you would typically find at a steakhouse. You must order the fried rice. The tenderloin was very impressive as it was not only cooked perfectly but it was very tender and melted in my mouth. The dirty martini was tasty and as you can see from the picture a great serving size! If you haven't checked out A5, put it on your list! read more

Yummy food and good service! We had drinks + aps and then both got our own entrees, so delicious and worth the price! Definitely a treat to come here. Was a bit worried as they do add a 20% gratuity automatically, but the staff was so kind and honestly exceeded my expectations, so we tipped a bit more.
