Please be cautious because this company was formerly named A&B. They also have other names and phone numbers which are one and the same. I dealt with them for a window treatment which was supposed to be cleaned, but returned the same as it was. They were supposed to fix my blinds which was returned without the wand that opens and closes it. They returned to put on the wand. After he left I turned the wand and it broke in half. He must have reached above the broken part to demonstrate it worked. He had brought a broken wand that was glued together. As I had signed off that it was delivered I had no recourse with Visa. I came upon this person by coincidence because I was looking for a rug cleaner and became suspicious because his accent sounded familiar and he hesitated when I asked his name. I cross referenced the other phone number he gave me and sure enough, the same con man. Actually he looked at my very costly Persian rug to inform me that they do rug cleaning. I like everyone else on this site was taken by a BOGUS carpet cleaning service ABC Carpet Cleaning. My building had a fire and was told that my area rug and wall to wall carpets would be cleaned for $4950.00. Eric asked for a deposit of $2000.00 and took my area rug to boot. The under padding was falling apart. So while I'm out $2000.00 and my area rug, I'm left to feel like I've been taken. I know now that I will NEVER see my money or area rug again. May they rot in hell with the under padding. My advice to you is NEVER TO USE THIS CLEANING SERVICE AS THEY ARE A FRAUD!!! A good education. read more

To be avoided at all costs. This is my absolute worst experience in my as-of-yet 442 Yelp reviews. ABC Carpet is the Donald Trump of carpet cleaning companies. Scams, unethical behavior, cons, and shady business dealings. This completely unprofessional business is seemingly a big dangerous con. My apartment was flooded and three of my carpets were water-damaged. Because I have renters' insurance, my Allstate adjuster needed a written/e-mailed/faxed estimate from a carpet cleaning company before approving and paying for the cleaning work. ABC sent out a guy to pick up the carpets and provide a preliminary estimate. In my presence, we called the adjuster, who approved the ABC guy to take the carpets back to the factory, thenceforth ABC would deal directly with my adjuster and provide a written estimate which he could approve or not. I gave the ABC guy the adjuster's name, e-mail, phone number, and my claim number. This was crystal clear to everyone, and we were speaking on a recorded phone line with Allstate. *6 weeks* later, neither I nor my Allstate guy heard anything from ABC. The phone number provided by ABC is an answering service, and after calling twice and leaving exasperated messages, a secretary at the service said, "oh ya, we get a lot of complaints about ABC." She then, in a friend-in-need move, provided me with a direct number for the ABC factory, where I called and left a message with a worker there. A week later, still no return call. I called again, threatening to file a police report and a complaint with the Better Business Bureau, and voilà, wouldn't you know it, I received a call back the next day from the guy who picked up my carpets. I couldn't pick up, so he left a message saying my carpets would be ready to be delivered next week, and a delivery person would be in touch later that day. Delivery without having approved or agreed to the cleaning??!!?!? I called back the cell phone number from which he called me, and of course, nobody picked up, so I left a frustrated message. Later that night when I tried again, I could only get a "your call cannot be completed as dialed" message. Perhaps my number was blocked? Still later, a delivery person called to arrange a time for delivery the following week. She was very nice, but didn't know details about my rugs because she's only in the delivery warehouse. I explained the whole situation to her (I've probably explained this whole thing to 6 different people on the phone by now) and told her that I would not be accepting delivery of, nor paying for, these rugs, and that she should be in touch with Allstate, as originally agreed to. That's where things stand right now. I have no idea what's going to happen. I'm pretty forgiving, but ABC Carpet has made me resent a company like I never have before. Allstate selected this company for me because the preliminary estimate on the phone was the cheapest. This is NOT a review of ABC Carpet & Home downtown. This is ABC Carpet Cleaning. So this is the situation. Their website looks very professional so you give them a call. Their "scheduling dept" answers as they do not have an actual store. They wont give you a price over the phone, not even an estimate. They send over a guy who gives you a hard and fast sell. They charged me at least five times more than other companies and to top it off - they send your rug to another company to be cleaned, they don't even do it themselves! They seem to have a bunch of different phone numbers and "locations" which is a red flag as well. Need I say more? read more

This is an imposter company that has taken my carpet hostage. They are charging me $800 for a hand cleaning and went ahead with the service without prior authorization as originally agreed. I have my carpet cleaned by the true ABC Rug & Carpet every year and the most I've been charged is $331. Now this company is refusing to return my rug unless I pay them the $700, they've offered a 15%. It is really upsetting especially since this rug holds sentimental value. read more

God awful company! I'm still waiting for a delicate and expensive carpet to be returned after FOUR WEEKS and two attempts at cleaning. The first time it was returned with a HUGE streak running through the carpet. First they tried to pass it off saying that it was an effect of removing dirt (no, dirt doesn't come off in a huge straight white streak) and then claimed it was left over detergent (does no one look at the cleaned carpet? Is it rolled up still wet?) Now, I've been waiting for my twice cleaned carpet--at a huge cost--to be delivered and the "technician" keeps missing his own delivery dates and times. AVOID! AVOID! AVOID! We're still waiting on a rug that was picked up 5 weeks ago (7-10 day estimate to clean) to be returned. We have called numerous times, but every time, the person who answers the phone says that "customer service" will call us back in 24-48 hours. We have only once received a call back, and were told that our rug would be delivered "on Wednesday." Two Wednesdays have since come and gone. Still no rug, still no call back since. The worst part is that the guys who came to pick up the rug had us prepay for the cleaning, so it now seems that we're out both a rug and a couple hundred bucks. Even if the rug does come back to us in better condition than it left, I don't trust the company's claim that "all cleaning agents we use for rug cleaning (NYC) are safe for the family, children, baby's, pets and the environment." I'm pretty certain that, if it comes back at all, we'll be sending it right back out to be cleaned by a legitimate and reputable carpet cleaning business. UPDATE: Our rug was finally returned, but only after several more calls and, at last, a threat to file a report with the BBB, a dispute with our credit card, and a suit with small claims court (which got our rug back to us within hours). It was cleaned, though by the looks of it, only on the surface, not the deep, two-sided cleaning we paid for. Three stars means be a bit cautious. Nice rugs, prices not too bad but... One rug bought in winter, come spring proved the source of a major moth infestation. Wool sweaters turned to lace. Tailor-made coats and pants rendered not good enough to give away. Clearly not all ABC carpets are really well cleaned when they come in from foreign parts. read more

I am an 87 year old handicapped woman who lives alone. I'm suffering because of ABC Carpet just like the doctor in your article. I had three oriental rugs that I wanted cleaned. I used Long Island Carpet for years without any problems, but the internet produced ABC Carpet Cleaning and I thought I'd check them out. What a mistake! Their salesman Nick (no other name) assured me that Long Island Carpet was out of business (Untrue, but I believed him.) Salesmen known to sell snake oil are very convincing, besides which the painters had already begun I felt under pressure to get my rugs out of the way. Nick insisted I give him an "advance" of $2540.00, so I wrote him a check. I thought it strange at the time, since service companies wait till the work is finished for their money. The carpets arrived yesterday six weeks later after four calls to their number, but the driver said I had to pay him first before he unloaded the truck, and only with a certified check. If I would rate them a ZERO, I would. I called and spoke with an agent, who refused to give a estimate price range, on bedroom wall to wall carpeting. I then made an appointment with a time range of 10am - 12pm. The 'cleaning technician' called me at 8:30am. He proceeded to tell me he was given 9am - 10am as a time slot for my cleaning. I told him I was sleeping and he offered to come at 1:30pm. 1:30 comes and no guy. I called him no answer. He returned my call and had no idea what I was talking about. I called the office to speak to the agent, Matt who originally helped me. A dispatcher answered. I left a detailed message and no return call. My experience is not as bad as these other clients. Stay away ! I would definitely not recommend this company for anyone. I have given them 2 of rugs over 8 months ago, have called them 15 times and customer service keeps on giving me the same reply, that I will receive a call back within 24-48 hours and of course I never do. I tried speaking with a manager and same answer, I don't even know why they have a manager in this place, he is as useless as the other persons answering the calls. I am not sure how to deal with this situation, all I want is, my carpets back. This is the worse experience I ever had with a service company. the carpet came back the same way it was picked up! They had promised they will have the rugs looking like New as they will Hand Wash the rugs. Poor quality workmanship and poor work ethics. Another reviewer said she was ashamed that she allowed them to charge her credit card, and so am I. Got fast-talked into $800 "cleaning and restoration" by 'Eric' on a $1,400 rug. He got it out of the apartment as quickly as possible, even before I signed the charge. I immediately had a terrible feeling after he left and tried to get the rug back. As the other reviewers say, they are impossible to reach. I put in a complaint with the credit card company to get some leverage, and after all was said and done weeks later, I had to pay $400 cash to get my rug back. As others have said, the rug had been lightly cleaned and still had discolorations that were there when it was taken. An overall horrible experience at the hands of very experienced hustlers. Would be zero stars if Yelp allowed that. Absolute scam. Total ripoff, had carpets for almost 3 months, would not return calls. Everything written in other reviews about call center, run around the block, over priced etc is all true. To get a call back I had to threaten NYPC, Better Business Bureau and cancelling the charge on AMEX which I actually did. When they called I told them I know this is a scam business and I had read Yelp reviews...they told me that Yelp is actually a scam of a company and not them. Total joke, AVOID AT ALL COSTS. Awful, awful experience! They picked up my small area rug that had a coffee stain on it and way overcharged me. After keeping it for several weeks they returned it with the stain still in in and the texture of the rug had completely changed! I made repeated calls to the Manager of the company as well as the cleaner directly. WHen it was finally returned the second time some of the stain had gone away but the rug's texture was completely ruined...I would never recommend their services! read more

This was one of the most costly and negative outcomes I have ever experienced ! They could not come pick up the rugs fast enough and I was charged almost $800 to have two rugs "cleaned". (they cost $1600.00 brand new so this was half the price of the two rugs. However it took me several weeks and at least half a dozen unreturned phone calls to get them to deliver them back to me. The answering service (anytime of day) tells you that she can only "send them notes" she cannot get in touch with anyone directly. A guy finally showed up at almost 7:00 PM for a promised 3:00 PM delivery weeks late, and I had of course taken half a day off from work to sit there like an idiot for 4 hours. The rugs had ALL THE STAINS on them that they did before they left my apartment -- they were merely surface cleaned -- something I could have done for $10.00 with any generic rug spray from a super market or hardware store. When I called to complain, the guy ERIC could have scared less! Clearly from these reviews, they are used to lots of unhappy customers and ripping people off blindly -- and they have a prepared a little speech that ERIC screams at you and the "no guarantee" speech that follows. DO NOT GO TO ABC CARPET to have you rugs cleaned unless you want to pay a shitload of money and be hugely disappointed.
