I was excited to find out that we were getting a Portillo's. My last time having it was in California, so when they started opening them here I was ecstatic! Parking is huge and they have plenty of it. When walking in you admire the atmosphere, since they have so much everywhere. Art and memorabilia, and artwork. From the ceiling to the bathrooms, there is artwork everywhere. The menu is short and sweet and the staff is always great. The price is decent, and the food comes out quick. The food is always good and the chocolate cake shake is a must. So if you are ever in the mood for good Chicago dogs and sandwiches, this place is worth a try. read more

We have gone to a Portillos in Chicago and enjoyed. I mean.. it's hotdogs, etc. Went to the one in Schertz and 2/3 ordering machines were NOT working.. It was dinner time, so that was annoying. We really didnt know if we should stand in line to use one of these machines, or go to a register. (Odd to have both, IMO.) Anyway- the food was ok. Husband ordered Polish Sausage, I got a Chicago dog. It was ok. Lots of tables were occupied or needed to be cleaned. The ambiance just wasnt there, either, like in Chicago. Went. This Chicago staple is finally close to us. This location is busy. There are a couple kiosks to order at and then the counter of course. Hmmm how can I put this?. The atmosphere and ambiance was busy, electric, and laid back. I enjoyed the atmosphere. I'm glad there is a ordering kiosk because I needed time to think and didn't want to hold anyone up. I ordered the jumbo hot dog and Italian beef sandwich with fries and a drink. For dessert, I got a chocolate cake. Italian beef sandwich- It was lightly dipped and I have no issue with that . But the flavor was a bit lacking. I've had Italian beef sandwiches that were way more flavorful, so that is always my expectation. It wasn't horrible, but I need more flavor . Next time I'll order extra gravy on the side. Hot dog- It was just simply okay. Fries- I suggest eating those fries quick. They bet lackluster really fast! Chocolate cake - I'll never order this item again. When I started my CPG career, I worked for a man who grew up in Chicago. During the time I worked for him, he frequently mentioned Chicago style hotdogs. He was in love with those from Portillo's. So I was excited to try them when they opened in San Antonio. We gave them a few weeks to get all the kinks worked out. We also went after 2:00 P.M. thinking the lunch crowd would be over. Even with that planning, we still ended up participating with a large crowd. Driving up, we found the huge parking lot full. As this is located in a newly started shopping area, there were no other businesses to park at, and we literally had to wait a while for parking. Finally, we walked in and found a long line waiting in front of us. It took us more than 20 minutes to get to the register and order. Ordering was easy, and the young lady working with us took good care of us. I ordered 2 dogs, and my wife ordered a burger. We went and got our drinks and found the only table available. It took about 10 minutes for the food to be ready. They call your number, and then you go pick up your order. We have a split decision on our opinions. My dogs came with a crisp pickle on top along with peppers, tomatoes, and onions. My wife's burger came as she ordered it. I really enjoyed the hotdogs, but my wife felt like she could have gotten her burger at Burger King (that's not a good thing). Will I return? A taste of Chicago here in Texas! So happy we have a portillos. I loved going here when I lived in the Midwest. I love the classic Chicago dog, the chocolate cake, and the chocolate cake milkshake. We managed to walk in when they had kiosks out to self order. Our food took some time to come out, but it was delicious. I got the polish dog and all the flavors blended well. First Time Visitors, Pleasantly Surprised! Even though I've traveled across many states I'm also not originally from Texas I had actually never heard of Portillo's until this location opened up here in Schertz. My husband and I decided to check it out for a late dinner around 8:00 PM on a Monday. There were quite a few people there, but thankfully, there was no line. We wanted to get the full experience, so we ordered a variety of items to share. The Food: Italian Beef & Sausage : We ordered this with sweet peppers and asked for the hot peppers on the side. The sweet peppers were absolutely delicious! The hot peppers were more mild than spicy, but they were still incredibly tasty and had a great crisp to them. The Sausage was a standout for me. It was so good it brought back memories of my grandma cooking Italian sausage in a skillet. Burger & Hot Dog: The burger was very tasty. The hot dog wasn't bad either I really enjoyed all the generous, flavorful toppings it came with. Fries: They were good, though just a little bit on the salty side. Atmosphere: The restaurant itself was very clean. You could easily tell the staff was working hard and doing a great job keeping up with the dining room. Overall, a really great first experience! For fast food, this place is pretty good. Our family ordered a variety of items, including Chicago dogs, fries, onion rings, a chicken sandwich, and a burger. The Chicago dogs were definitely the standout and something I would order again. The fries, however, were heavily salted--more than I prefer. Next time, I would probably ask for light salt or no salt. I'd also like to come back and try the Italian beef sandwich, which looked popular. One thing to note: we went on a weekday evening and the parking lot was completely full, so we ended up using the drive-thru instead. The drive-thru service was surprisingly fast despite how busy they were. Another nice bonus is that they offer a military discount, which is always appreciated. The long awaited Portillo's is finally open near San Antonio and after all the hype was gone I finally got the opportunity to give it a try. I arrived during lunch hour and the place wasn't packed at all plenty of seating available and kiosk to order at, with the option to order at the counter in person if you like. I placed my order via the kiosk, ordered the #1 Famous Combo included the Regular Italian Beef, had it classic, added spicy peppers (99 cents extra btw), regular fries and regular drink, just be sure to keep your eye on the size of fries and drink as it is automatically on the large size. Once my order was ready I indulged into this Chicago based delicacy. The Italian beef spicy sandwich was flavorful, rich in beef and spice however did lack more pepper for my sandwich. The crinkle cut fries were crispy and nicely salted. Overall, amazing interior really see the history and Chicago based background, the food was good nothing worth waiting too long in line for and the staff was very friendly. Recommend you give it a try however for $16 combo next time I'll be sure and get the sandwich soaked or try out the Chicago dog. read more

Ordering at the kiosks is more simple than ordering at other restaurant kiosks. They serve cold beer at a decent price. Service is really good at the counters. Finding a clean empty table can be challenging, so someone should secure seating when ordering if possible. Place is packed when we went. The food as a whole is "meh". The worst chili dog I've ever had. Ordered one of each hot dog. I'm confused how this place has a strong following. The sausage dog is better than the hot dog, no matter how dressed. I would still choose a Bill Miller's sausage, if given a choice. The Italian beef and Italian sausage were alright....the beef needed more seasoning and the Italian sausage was flavorful but dry. Didn't get it with bread, thinking it would be too much of a mess. Coke products tasted like knock off soda. Not a good meal for $55. Probably won't come back. Ohh man, we lucked up and got to go in for a sneak peek today and it was everything I needed!! The restaurant is beautiful and well put together, a mix of Schertz and Chicago. I finally made it over to the Portillo's in Schertz, and even though I waited a bit after opening day hoping the rush would die down, Texans proved me wrong. The place was still absolutely packed. Every single parking spot was taken -- truly every one. At one point, a guy even parallel‑parked his Corvette, which told me everything I needed to know about the parking situation. We weren't about to attempt that, so we headed for the drive‑through. The front menu board only showed a handful of items; I'm guessing their "favorites" or quick‑order picks. Since we were starving, we didn't spend much time debating. I ordered the Italian Beef sandwich combo, and my husband went for the Double Char‑Broiled Burger with a chocolate shake. You could tell the team was still working out the kinks on the drive‑through side -- pacing was slow, communication felt a little off, and the whole process had that "new opening" learning curve. We took our food and drove over to the EVO parking lot to eat, hoping for a better first bite than the first impression. Food My Italian Beef was the biggest disappointment. The menu description promised thinly sliced beef roasted for hours, peppers, Turano bread, and a "secret gravy sauce." What I actually got was an overloaded sandwich that completely sogged through the bottom of the bread within minutes. The beef itself was flavorful, but the moisture was too much, and I couldn't find any trace of the "secret gravy sauce" the description talked about. The picture and the reality didn't match. My husband's burger had a good patty, but the bun was soggy as well. The saving grace of the meal was his chocolate shake, which was thick, sweet, and genuinely good. Overall Portillo's clearly has a huge fan base -- the crowd alone proved that -- but our first visit didn't live up to the hype. I was super excited to go and try this for the first time! My man, the kids, and I went a few times already! The food was absolutely great! Service was quick, although the downfall here is that when seated outside, the sound system people did not put the microphone outside to where you can hear that your order is ready :/ They did mention that if no one was inside to get there order that an employee would come outside and call the number as well and that didn't happen. (Maybe for now they can add a note on the system where the receipt is printed stating that they're sitting outside) I noticed a lot of employees standing around by the door to the patio but they never came outside to call numbers. Note to management, I would get that taken care of! I only saw one table that was upset because their food was almost cold. We tried Portillo's today and ... it was a bust The atmosphere was cool the decor reminded us of 54th Street and the employees were friendly and helpful in explaining the menu and assisting us through our order. We ordered 2 burger meals , 1 hot dog meal and 3 Italian beef meals and it was a little shy of $100. The food comes packed in Togo paper bags . The meat had in our opinion ZERO flavor . Honestly tasted like unseasoned barbacoa. The fries tasted like old grease. The thing that made the Italian beef sandwich better was the nacho cheese dip (least expensive thing we bought ) . We have gone twice drove 50 mins to get there from Somerset, Texas. The food was ok I had to return our cheeseburgers back the cheese was not melted it looked like it was cold slapped on the patty. I'm surprised because they are "flame Broiled" and the fries were over salted and burnt. I'm not sure what happened this day was a Friday midday, Just missed the lunch rush so I don't understand. Gave it a 2nd chance on a Sunday for Father's Day, huge mistake line was out the door. Seemed like a 45 min wait to sit down. We did a drive thru order instead and that' took forever as well because they ran out of certain items. Our food again was super over salted the patties were burnt on the edges and the we didn't get some items. Also I do have to add the people that were ahead of us ordered a catering order on the fly, I was told it was a $600 order thru the drive thru I feel like something like that needs manager approval but I understand the person taking the order felt like they had to. People were being turned away at the door because food ran completely out. Over all I think the hype needs to die down, I'm Chicago native so I was super excited to finally have a piece of home. I grew up in the Chicagoland area and am so excited we finally have a Portillo's here! The flavor is excellent and everything has been hot and fresh. The only downside is, at this location, the Italian beef sandwiches have significantly less beef on them. I've never had empty bread left over on a sandwich in the hundreds of times I've eaten at Portillo's, and I have each time I've eaten at this location. read more
