Everytime I drive by this place there is a line in the morning. Finally got to try Abel's with the family this morning and now I know why people are willing to wait. Their customer service is amazing. Our waitress knew customer's name like they have been friends forever. Reasonable prices for the meal. I had their Abel's breakfast and it was better than average and it came out fast too. From the time we put our name on the waiting list till the time I had my meal was about 30 minutes. Not bad. It was pretty packed inside and had a country home feel with their decor. So if you're looking for a quick, decent meal that won't hurt the wallet. Look for this corner diner in the shopping center in Schertz.

As I was coming back from San Antonio, I noticed I was entering Schertz and recalled that there's a Diner nearby. The place in question is a wonderful and staple in the neighborhood, it's "Abel's Diner". This place is wonderful the food is amazing the breakfast is by far one of the best in town. But today it was lunch time, so I wanted to try if the lunch is as good as their breakfast. And I wasn't disappointed, but let me go to the beginning. As you walk in you see a good amount of seating even for somewhat larger groups, the hostess takes you to your seat and then they take your drink order. The people that are taking and bringing your meal are extremely helpful and all around wonderful people. For my meal I ordered the "Homestyle Hamburger" with fries as my side. I'm not going to lie, but at first glance it looked odd, being on what appears a hoagie bun. But don't be fooled, it was absolutely delicious I had cheese and bacon to the hamburger and it brought it to next level. The fries themselves were equally delicious, overall this place continues to serve great food and is a wonderful option.

My dad is obsessed with this place. Notice he's the one always ordering the Chicken Fried Steak. Abel's was sold a while ago and prior to that, portion sizes got smaller. The to go cups are way smaller. Uh, hello? We are in TX. Everything is suppose to be bigger here. I'd like them to at least, go back to the larger to go cups. Anyway, food to fine. Service is always great here. The older generation loves this place and it is always crowded. Need I say more?

I've tried several different dishes from this restaurant and to me they're just mediocre. I had the eggs Benedict and the hollandaise sauce didn't taste like hollandaise sauce. It had an off taste to it. When we got there about 10:20 AM my party ordered breakfast and I wanted to order off the lunch menu but was told I had to wait until 11:15 AM so I confirmed it with the cashier as we were leaving the restaurant . You cannot order between 10:30 AM and 11:15 AM off the menu because they're changing from the breakfast menu to the lunch menu . For a person that doesn't like breakfast this was kind of a red flag for me. The biscuits are homemade and good. The gravy is ok but all the other dishes that I've had are mediocre what I do recommend is the homemade cinnamon rolls with a cup of coffee.

I went to Abel's all the time growing up! Then I didnt go for years, until it was at the new location. I was bumed about not getting and rolls, since they were a dinner only item. The new location is a lot bigger and seems nicer to me. The host was great, but the server was not great. She ws very pushy and not helpful. Seemed like she was ready to snap... I dont like havong awardness with someone handling my food. The food was good, but not like how i remembered it... Servings were large though, so that was a plus! I would reccommend Abel's if you wanted to try it!

The service was great! This place honestly just reminds me of grandmas house growing up. Cute little homey atmosphere. Our food was a little subpar- but I don't think people really come here for the food. They come here for the comfort and welcoming feeling from all of the staff. All of the elderly people around us were greeted with warm smiles & hugs, almost like they were family and it made my heart so warm and fuzzy. I would recommend this restaurant just for that feeling alone! I love it!

Great, old-time spot for some classic diner fare. Been here for both breakfast and lunch, everything was great both times. Definitely recommend the club sandwich, it was large and packed with meat and veg, and the bacon was super crisp, just the way it should be. The waitresses are all very nice, and everyone seems like they enjoy working there, which is a rarity these days. Abel himself is often on site, either cooking up a storm in the back or walking around and checking on the guests, which is an awesome thing to see in an owner. This will be a regular spot for us, so glad somewhere like this is close by!

The absolute worst service in town. They've messed up my taco order NINE times. Gave them plenty of chances to get it right. Ordered the same tacos EVERY time. Definitely an argument against $15 an hour wage. I'm DONE!!! read more

I have lived in Schertz for three years and had no idea that Abel's Diner existed before now. I did an online search looking for holiday pies and Abel's turned up in my search and I knew I had to give it a try. It's a small restaurant and you really can't see it off I 35 because it's nestled in the corner of a small shopping strip. It's quaint inside and everything about it says it belongs in an old building on Main Street. I went for breakfast and it's home cooking at it's finest. Fresh made biscuits, the coffee cup was constantly full, and my omelet was well filled with meat, cheese and vegetables. read more

Great local diner. The wait can be long, but it moves pretty quickly. The biscuits and gravy and the egg Benedict are both very good. Abel's is much better and more consistent than any of the local chain alternatives when it comes to food quality. The atmosphere is far better as well. Feels more like what it is: a local family run diner. read more

My wife and I have been eating at Abel's Diner for over 33 years. In that time every meal was fantastic. The choices are many and very tasteful. All meals are made to order and the service is second to none. They offer a large number of daily desserts that I highly recommend if you still have room after your meal. Beginning with their dinner meal (5pm), every patron is given freshly baked yeast rolls. I'm a very critical customer and cannot find a single negative issue with Abel's Diner. read more

Four words: BEST FRIED CHICKEN EVER!!! Not greasy at all and the gravy with it tied it up absolutely perfectly. I even asked for a hoagie roll on the side to make it a sandwich and I absolutely finished my plate! The place had a homey ambiance and our server was so sweet. I'd rate it a 4.75 just because the food did take a little longer than expected to come and it was a little cold. But still very yummy! read more

We had the Breakfast Chicken Fried Steak with country potatoes and scrambled eggs. The Chicken Fried Steak was tender and the white gravy was flavorful. Probably the best country biscuit we've ever had. Fluffy and moist. Service was good and staff was friendly with your familiar southern hospitality. read more

We are here for our first time not really knowing what to expect. We were hoping to try their breakfast, but they stopped serving at 10:30 and it was 11:00. Not really a big deal. Their menu didn't really stand out much. Pretty basic. My wife ordered the BLT sandwich with fries and I ordered the bacon cheese burger. The waitress was super nice and very attentive. Our food came about 15-minutes later. I was a little disappointed to see that my burger was served on a hoagie/hotdog bun. The taste was plain. Nothing pops out with this burger. It was average at best. My wife's BLT was decent. Again, nothing special. I was a little surprised at how busy they were. We then got the check. For a BLT, bacon cheese burger, a iced tea and a Dr. Pepper came out to $29. We then stood in line just to pay for the meal at the register for about 15-minutes. Nothing was really overly impressive. Me and my wife stopped here on our way to Austin. My parents originally found this place and told us all about it. For context my parents live far on the South Side of San Antonio and they'll often make the 30-40 min trip out here just to have breakfast. You can usually see the owner running around in the big cleché chef hat. The atmosphere of this place is a cozy country dinner just as they set out to be. I had the eggs benedict and my wife had the one egg breakfast. We both had coffee. Both the meals and the drinks were good. The eggs were poached perfectly with the whites cooked full through and the yolk runny as can be. The reason i like this place and the reason it gets the five stars is because of consistency and intimacy. While others might whine about the lack of "creativity" in the dishes or inability to meet the needs of a 12 top table. I like this place because it caters to the individual and to the couple. The place feels local, it feels cozy, and that's because it is. I come here because i like the small town dinner. The place where the elderly couple comes and orders the same thing and the servers know their names. Overall the meal was good, coffee plentiful, and everything was hot. Now are there better places in San Antonio? (I know that this is located in Schertz but whatever) Yes I'm not ignorant. There is Magnolias, Pancakes Joes, The Guenther House and plenty others. But if you find your way driving up to Austin or in Schertz this is the place to go. read more

So good! We're visiting in town and honestly our first stop was another one in the area that's been on tv. Their wait was crazy though and we saw this one on Yelp. So glad we did! She told us the wait would be 15 minutes. 7 minutes later we were seated. Drinks came quick and order arrived fast also. Good sized portions. Had the diner potatoes with all of our breakfast orders and we all loved them! Boys had chicken fried steak and said it was delicious. Would definitely recommend this place! read more

We decided to eat here for dinner tonight. Our first time. It was nice walking in. The hostess staff was very welcoming. We were seated at a table and the waitress came over and greeted us. She asked us what we would like to drink. It was pretty nice. She brought over our drinks and told us the specials. I ordered the Shrimp Ob boy. it was so good. My son had the special pork cutlet. It was also good. The green beans were freshly cooked not from the can. My daughter order the steak and shrimp with a side of soup. The chicken rice soup was amazing and had fresh herbs. My husband ordered the catfish and he ate the whole platter of food. Rating 1 star for facilities 1 star for service 1 star for food 1 star overall - star for the restrooms because i didn't use them. Business was picking up when we were leaving but they had plenty of staff members standing around waiting to serve people. I just love how the chefs have chef outfits. read more

Small, but comfortable place that has a few tables inside and out. Sell coffee and baked goods but also has a nice little breakfast/brunch menu. The owners ran the place and really seemed "happy" to see us, took time to walk us through the menu, offer suggestions, etc. just extremely "comfortable" place to be from the moment we walked through the door. My wife and I always pick two entrees and share. We went with the breakfast sandwich and the biscuits and gravy and we were not disappointed. The house made brioche bun for the sandwich and the biscuits were out-of-this-world delicious. Based on that, I would wager that the other baked goods they had displayed (scones, cinnamon rolls, etc) would have been wonderful! (I'll be back soon to confirm this) Back to the food...the sandwich was very good- egg was perfectly "over hard" and high quality cheese and bacon. The maple-chipotle mayo absolutely made the bite. Next time I will ask for extra, maybe slathered on both halves of the bun. The flavor of that mayo was unlike anything I've tasted- thoroughly enjoyed it and it complimented the overall flavor of the sandwich so well. Delicious!!! As already mentioned the biscuits were outstanding...which is not something that I say lightly. While I will always try biscuits and gravy, I am usually disappointed and it is typically because of biscuits that are too dense and too dry. These were neither- they were incredible and I'm not sure what gave them the touch of "sweet" but that little touch took the flavor of the biscuit over the top for me. Finally, the gravy was perfect from the amount of sausage to the elegant "sage-iness" of the bite. With respect to the quantity of gravy, it is not uncommon for places to not give enough gravy. The ratio of gravy to biscuit must be difficult to master, well they've done it at Northern D'Lights!! Just incredible experience and we will be back, on the regular! Give this place a go...great place!

Abels has good food ,I have been going there for years,recently my daughter got hired by Abel himself,he hired her knowing she has seizures,well she had a seizure in his office out of view of the general public,she is ok,but devastated,because she went to pick up her check and he fired her,he told her she was a liability and would have to let her go. Well my question to Abel is ,why would you hire her if you feel this way? You know I'm a Christian man and I know my Lord and savior Jesus Christ took care of people like my daughter,and his teachings to the world are to let everyone have a chance to be the best they can be with what we are given in life. This place allows its customers to bring their pet dogs and sit ON the table! That's right, the same table you eat at! I say they allow this because the response to my wife complaining about it was "yeah we've told Abel many times and he doesn't address it".The response was basically the same when I asked the ladies at the counter if that wasn't a health violation. If you eat here you better be ok with this and I recommend wiping down your table before eating. As far as everything else, it's the poor man's Luby's meets the trailer park. This was my first visit to Abel's. Stopped in on the way to a marching band competition with a bunch of other parents. There were 12 of us. Food came out quickly and everyone's order was right.
