Very good service, nice atmosphere. Food was good. Liked everything. We had prime rib and scallops.

Went there one day last month. I was never greeted by anyone. The waiter just sat me at the bar without even asking if I wanted a table. I ordered a beer and while sitting there looking at the menu no one ever came to acknowledge me and offer me anything.. I got up and left.. The Ambiance was nothing exciting. The place had little business that night. I went back again to give it a try. A lady sat me and was asking me what I wanted to order. I told Id take a glass of wine to start and will look at the menu. When she brought the wine she asked me again what I wanted to order. I told I hadn't looked at the menu yet. I noticed that 2 tables were filled and the rest of the place was empty. She really pressed me to order food.. I ordered the Prime rib. It arrived and was utterly disappointed in the quality and way it was cooked. It was mushy and under cooked. I ate a little of it and then left. I never have felt so rushed at any restaurant before this one.. Needless to say, I will never be back nor would I recommend this place to anyone.. read more

We loved every bite at Aberdeen Barn! Our server James was wonderful and took care of our every need, even splitting a few shared plates in the kitchen for us to make service seamless. We had a group of 7 so we shared a few salads & appetizers. The oysters Rockefeller & barbecue shrimp were our favorites but the escargot and crab cake were also very good. The steaks were cooked as ordered and were flavorful. Sautéed mushrooms and creamed spinach were basic but good and all of the desserts were amazing, we tried 5 of the selections. I do not know how this place is still in business! The interior looks like you stepped into a time machine and popped out in an Austin Powers movie, and the food is absolutely inedible. The only thing we could eat was the French onion soup. Everything else: escargot, scallops, and prime rib (came out in a literal pool of blood) AND the sides of onion rings were disgusting. I'm embarrassed to say what we paid to dine here. The prices are absolutely INSANE for the terrible quality. I ordered a baked potato and asked for just butter, and the server thought it was the right time to say all toppings are served on the side, bc they are still "kinda following covid" and then went on to say she was vaccinated and the only reason was bc of the owner and that otherwise she wouldn't have done it bc " everyone has their time to go" Despite the fact that we didn't ask for her opinion, explain how toppings on the side follow "COVID protocol"??? My wife got a salad. They didn't put the dressing on the side? Or did the waitress just use this as an excuse to share her beliefs. I'm trying to have a nice dinner with my wife - what an incredibly inappropriate time to make that comment. She also has no idea if I am an anti vaxxer or scared to death of COVID (I'm neither). This isn't a review about COVID. I really don't care what you believe or if you still want to wear a mask or whatever. But for a server at a restaurant to dump that on us when I'm trying to have a nice dinner....I DO NOT CARE WHAT YOU THINK. Came here for Father's Day dinner, following the post COVID reopening. Our group of 4 had two orders of prime rib and two orders of crab cakes. The prime rib was excellent as usual, and I have been coming here for 10 years. This is what you want to get when you come here! The crab cakes are also very good, and are a little different that the MD style I am used too. Please note that the prices have changed due to the current market conditions (aka prices have gone up). Took me a little off guard since I was the one that volunteered to pay in advance but it is what it is. We missed the salad dressing tray too, but I imagine that isn't allowed with the current restrictions . Overall a great meal on a special occasion and we were glad to be able to come. A lot of other reviews mention the dated decor. For me this represents nostalgia of the great steakhouses I ate at as a kid with my parents. If you don't like it don't come. This is classic American ambiance that is authentic and can't be manufactured. read more

Place was a trip back to the 70s/80s if you are into that decor. Ribeye was pretty good but why were mashed potatoes $3 more and they weren't even all that great? Maybe fix that. Ok I'm not really sure what to say about this place. My coworkers had been here in the past and said they loved the steaks. I don't eat steak but whatever I'll find something to eat. Well, from the moment you walk through the door it's like you stepped into an old-school steak place from 1974. Some people call it "rustic" but no, it's just very dark and old. Anyway, if you can get past the interior decor the food is not terrible. The salad is basic iceberg but not bad. All my coworkers had steaks and as usual claimed they were delicious. I had the fried shrimp and honestly I can't really complain about them. And they actually have cappuccino which is pretty rare in Charlottesville. The service was very good so no complaints there. Now all this isn't cheap. So perhaps the only way this place has actually changed since 1974 are the prices on the menu. I guess if you're ok with a dark, old woody restaurant with decent food you'll be ok here. If you're looking to impress someone or looking for something cosmopolitan look elsewhere. read more

Aberdeen Barn is an old school steakhouse, dark interiors with a lot of wood... like a barn. The food is also done in a kind of old school way... in a way that was good back in the day, but hasn't kept up with newer methods, seasonings or style of presentation. It's still good, but it's not contemporary and not fancy, but the prices are! It's kind of a Charlottesville institution, so people are likely to recommend it if you're looking for a steakhouse there. Ask for James to be your server. He's nice and efficient. We're from out of town and selected Aberdeen Barn based solely on open table ratings - it was excellent! Driving up we were a bit worried - it's not in the cute part of town, it's by the highway between the budget chain motels and a gas station. From the outside it looks cute but dated. Once we were inside that was all forgotten. The ambiance is rustic, charming, romantic, dark. We took off one star for ambiance because it was almost too dark - our middle aged eyes struggled slightly with the menu. LOL. We started with the house special clams casino and they did not disappoint. There are lots of other apps we would have loved to try as well! My husband had the prime rib - he ordered the standard cut and it was the thickest, juiciest cut of prime rib I've ever seen. I can't even imagine what the thick cut is like! I had the lamb chops and they were amazing. We finished with the chocolate lava cake - not that we had room for it but the sweet was a nice finish to a rich meal. My husband and I recently revisited the Aberdeen Barn. We had eaten there 32 years ago. We were back in the area and we wanted to see if it was still as good as we remembered. My husband enjoyed his steak which was cooked as he ordered it, and I enjoyed the fried shrimp which were large and not overly breaded. Both meals were tasty. Shrimp is served with coleslaw. Our servers were very pleasant and responsive to our requests. While there is certainly something to be said for continuing to do what you're good at, it would be nice to update the menu. The bar has limited spirits and limited cocktail choices. It's very traditional. Beer is available by the bottle. I did not evaluate the wine list. The interior looks the same as it did 32 years ago. The bench seat springs were pressing into my back and I had to move around to find a comfortable spot. It's very dark inside - almost depressingly so. I feel the prices are very high for the simplicity of the meals. Side dishes are basic and limited. Having had many dining experiences in the last 32 years, made this experience not as impressive as it was when we were younger. The people were nice, but the food left much to be desired. While everything was cooked well, there was just no seasoning on anything. We got filets and my husband got a lobster tail; the filets were cooked correctly, but no flavor other than the natural flavor of the meat (I put salt on it and it helped) and the lobster had a odd taste but again no flavor. For a side I went with the "barn potatoes" which were large potato wedges, again NO flavor; I took one taste and stopped eating these. There were some onion rings served on the side of the steak and if they were house-made I could tell the same cook made the batter for those, because again NO seasoning. The breadsticks at the beginning of the meal I highly recommend not even trying because you will choke from how dry they are. There are dinner rolls that are fine, likely a frozen item popped into the oven. I did enjoy the flourless chocolate cake that I ordered for dessert, but I was told that is not house-made. The female owner was very nice and helped us pick a decent wine. The server was personable. Decor was very dated, but somewhat nostalgic and seemed to be clean. Great service and fancy decor, however the food was lacking. The sides were very small- I literally got two pieces of broccoli and five fries. Those were the two sides. The location and atmosphere are a little odd here. To me, it felt like this place should have been called a pub rather than a steakhouse. Regardless, they have a good prime rib and fast, friendly service. Listen to your waiter and get the prime rib. This is by far the best cut here and you get a huge portion. My brothers were struggling to finish their plates and they are all impressive eaters. Their other cuts and dishes weren't really worth the price despite receiving decent portions and their sides are only average, if that. A warm, traditional atmosphere, the Aberdeen Barn is a throwback to old-school steakhouse dining. Boasting a menu chock full of beef selections, it takes pride in the quality of its prime rib. With sizes from the princess cut to the extra heavy cut, it is a sight for the steak aficionado. Prior to the meal my server brought me warm bread and pretzels sticks with a Wisconsin cheddar cheese. The cheese was quite tasty. The bread however was lukewarm. That should have been a sign that they have a problem gauging heat... I chose the regular cut prime rib with broccoli and barn potatoes for dinner. Cooked to perfection, my steak was indeed delicious. It was tender and moist with just the right amount of flavor, cooked to the perfect temperature (medium). The broccoli, however, was cold, having clearly been steamed and allowed to sit. The barn potatoes, which is a baked potato quartered and deep-fried, were rather bland and tasteless. A good bit of seasoning would have gone a long way with the sides. Overall it was a pleasant dining experience. Yet, it was not the "stellar" experience I was expecting. It was good but I would not go out of my way to dine there. Hence the average rating. read more

So basically this place sucks. I've been here twice and both times have been equally disappointing. The steaks are okay but everything else is just awful. Somehow even the sodas are gross. Overly sweet with little to no carbonation. I ordered the surf and turf with a baked potato and side salad ($55), my husband order the 9oz filet ($40) add on Louisiana style fried lobster tail ($24) with a baked potato and side salad, and we got a side of mashed potatoes ($7) for our son. Our steaks were cooked exactly how we ordered them but unfortunately flavorless and both of our lobster tails (broiled and fried) were so over cooked, it was like trying to chew up burnt rubber. I don't know how you can screw up a baked potato but they did.. i don't know if they were undercooked or what but they were just plain gross! It's kind of crazy they charge so much for the entrees and if you want a side of mashed potatoes, it's an EXTRA $3... for mashed potatoes.... My son liked his mashed potatoes but they charge so much for such a small side! $7 for basically an oversized ramekin of mashed potatoes. My husband enjoyed his dessert, Orange cream sickle cake ($10) and unfortunately my dessert absolutely disgusting, strawberry shortcake ($7). They must prepare it ahead of time because the shortcake was basically all mush. Would give zero stars if possible. Would not recommend this place too anyone read more

We slipped in last night right before closing and the staff (while probably ready to wrap it up for the day) were so welcoming and accommodating, serving us with genuine hospitality, warmth and continual smiles. Beyond that the food was spectacular! Being from NY and accustomed to great food, I would come here to get Prime Rib over many of the spots in NYC. It was PERFECT!
