I was celebrating my mother's 83rd birthday. We had looked at many restaurants around the Charlottesville area. I mentioned Aberdeen Barn. My mother was so excited. She had not eaten at this restaurant in years. I had never eaten at one of their restaurants. I made reservations. The night of our dinner, we arrived a few minutes late due to traffic problems. There was no hesitation. We were seated. Our server was Mark. We quickly looked at the menu and already knew what we were going to order. Both of us ordered the Princess cut Prime Rib. OMG what a wonderful choice. It would melt in your mouth it was so tender. We also both had baked potatoes. My mom ordered the Caesar salad. It was huge. The dressing was somewhat oily for my taste but we still almost ate the entire salad. It was her birthday, so we had a complimentary flour-less chocolate cake. OMG it was like nothing I have ever had before. I would highly recommend this restaurant. The food was authentic and steak house classic. We love Aberdeen Barn. We love their cracker basket and cheese, their warm rolls, their shrimp cocktail, and their soups. I LOVE their mushroom soup (which unfortunately is not often on the menu), but their seafood bisque is delicious too. My husband loves the French onion. My favorite entree is the seared ahi. Aberdeen Barn not like it used to be. I am not a red meat but with 2 other folks who were. $25 grilled Chicken meal was no different then a meal at Denny's at less than half the price. Not sure why we had to wait for a table for 20 minutes when we had a reservation. When we finally were told we could be seated " I asked the owner "you must be back to back appts.?" She said yes and I was a little taken back when we passed many empty tables on our way to our table. The wait staff was very nice and accommodating. I have lived in Cville since 1979. The restaurant is just not the same. Very sad. Somebody was not paying attention to he details. Very disappointing. I rarely leave a 1 star review...but from the 1950s "good old boy" decor to the crappy service, to the dirty dishes? A half star, if possible, is what I'd give this place. The steaks we received were just steaks. Frankly, for the $$ I paid, I want better quality. Lots of tendon, tough. I can buy better quality at my local Fresh Market or Costco. Service sucked! My son works at a competitor, and they are trained and I would have paid much less. But the disappointment after being told how fantastic this place is. Run far away and don't go! I know some others haven't appreciated the 70's decor, but we loved it. Totally old school! Service was wonderful and very professional. Food was fresh and spot on. My husband and I both got the prime rib. He had the regular cut, which was GIGANTIC! The princess cut was much more reasonable, IMHO. The grated horseradish was a nice touch as well. If I could get away with not giving any stars, this would be a below zero rating. Well this is unfortunate - I see decent reviews on this place which would normally make me want to try again but, after the horrendous experience I had there with my family, there is no way in hell I will ever go back- ever! We are regulars at Aberdeen Barn in Williamsburg, VA and are used to above par service and fabulous food from them. Missing Aberdeen Barn for some time, we found one closer to us than Williamsburg, VA in Charlottesville, VA. So, for Father's Day last year, this was my father's expressed desire, to go to Aberdeen. So, off to C-Ville we went to celebrate this phenomenal man who helped bring in to this world, three amazing kids who have grown up to do only good in the world and serve their country following in their father's footsteps. The service was so horrendous I left almost in tears. The only thing that helped me keep them at bay was that he said he enjoyed his food and had a good time. We were seated rather quickly however, it took about 20 minutes for anyone to even stop by the table and say anything... when our server did get to us, SOMEONE ELSE had already gotten our drinks for us since we were left hanging for so long. We had plenty of time from the wait to figure out what we wanted and were ready to order by the time our server finally got to us. However upon seeing we had drinks, she got shitty and walked away; leaving us sitting there for another 15 - 20 mins. When she came back, she was there only long enough to hand us our menus and said she would be right back- didn't even ask if we needed refills. Another 20 minutes later after we watched her jump from table to table in the section but ignored us, we finally grabbed her and said we would like to order. Begrudgingly pulling her pad out of her pocket with her attitude (unfortunately she left the stick up her arse), she finally took our order. True to form I got my favored Seafood Bisque. Holy cow it was the most disgusting thing I ever had- there was not the slightest hint of Sherry and it was liking sucking down melted butter with some fish sauce. The pretzels were stale and the bread was unlike the freshness we were used to from Aberdeen Barn. Despite the disgusting food thus far, and ridiculously horrendous service, no one said anything so I 'm not sure at what point she decided to adapt a shitty attitude. When our prime rib came, we got no horseradish with it at all- nothing... when we asked for it, she looked at us like we were foreign and said they didn't have any. When we returned very perplexed looks and questioned her, she just got shittier... so she goes away and comes back with this little bowl of something stringy and absolutely disgusting... we asked what that was and she said it was horseradish... we tried to suffer through it but it was just so ridiculously disgusting we finally asked if she has any minced or paste... she said they didn't serve that- this was all they had... When it came to dessert, I left the call to my father since it was supposed to be his day, but, I just wanted to get out of there so bad before I made the biggest stink you ever saw. Unfortunately he did want dessert so we suffered through that wait and for him to finish his dessert; me, I didn't ask for another thing the whole dinner and made it known that I didn't appreciate the horrendous lack of professionalism on the part of the server and the ridiculous service we received. I vowed to never, ever, ever go back there - very sad because Aberdeen is typically our go to indulgence. I'll just stick to Williamsburg's store. Although a part of me realizes that maybe it was just this nasty thing going through menopause - the fact that they only serve that nasty, stringy, raw horseradish is enough to keep me from attempting another disastrous outing. After asking around about the best steakhouse in CVille I was directed towards Aberdeen Barn (AB) and I left very satisfied. While it is not a Peter Luger's or AJ Maxwell's for CVille it is more than appropriate. The atmosphere is more or less what you expect with dim lighting and wood panel throughout the restaurant. They are able to capture the classic steakhouse feel with the many decorations including classic rifles and other western themed items. They do have classic photos of UVA sports which was a nice surprise. I went here for restaurant week so the menu was limited to a few choices but left me with enough options where I was happy with my choice. They start you off with bread sticks and their own cheddar cheese sauce, which was delicious. I ordered the lobster bisque as an appetizer which was somewhat of a disappointment. It was too creamy and lacked the flavor of a typical lobster bisque. The real delight was my main course which was the Char Broiled Rib Eye which I have to say was around 14 oz. I ordered it medium with a side of baked potato. Everything about the steak was great, it was full of flavor and cooked to perfection. On a side note they placed a serving tray with sour cream and bacon bits on the table for the group to share which helped to dress up my baked potato. The best part of the meal was the key lime tart I had for desert which has the perfect ratio of sweet and tart. After the full meal I had this was a perfect way to end it. If in CVille and looking for a good steak this is the place to go. read more

Incredibly disappointing. Aberdeen Barn was a series of missteps in both food (the food alone warrants the two-star rating) and service. First, rolls were not brought to our table until we asked. Second, my french onion soup was a one-dimensional disaster. The soup tasted like a salty, store-bought beef broth and had none of the richness expected. Third, the included salad had browning lettuce and lettuce cores (unsuitable for serving). Fourth, the steak fries were something one would get at a bad French bistro, slightly undercooked with a strong flavor of grease. The only acceptable part of this meal was the prime rib, which while slightly overcooked (I asked for it medium rare) was still tender. I did, however, have to wait a few minutes for the rest of my party to be served since our one waiter brought out each person's entree and each person's side dish individually with some noticeable delays between. As newbies to Cville, I as looking for a steakhouse to celebrate my husband's birthday but also a place where I could take my 1 year old and not feel horrible for doing so. We settled on Aberdeen Barn! Its not on the nicest of streets, but they do have a parking lot and there's lots of street parking available too. This is not a Ruth's Chris kind of steakhouse, it's a little kitchy here, very classic / old-school kind of place that makes you feel like you are stepping back in time. My parents commented that they felt like they were back at a steakhouse in the early 1970's in the Wisconsin. No bread and butter here, crisp breadsticks and cheese spread as you are seated, salads and potatoes for all with dressings and all the fixins' serviced family style at your table. I had French Onion Soup and crab cakes. The crab cakes are serviced lightly breaded and fried, so I'd probably stick to steak next time but they were still good. I even took one home because it was so much food. The wait staff were fabulous and very knowledgeable about the wines and menu. They were also very nice and accommodating with my 1 year old in the highchair. At one point, one of our guests ordered a 2nd bottle of wine, tried it and said he didn't like the wine as the somm had recommended it. He actually sent it back (yes he did! First time ever seeing that at a restaurant!) and they got him a new bottle no questions asked! I will definitely come back here again. This is a great establishment where I feel like you could really get to know the staff. The restaurant scene in Cville is amazing and I would take someone to a chain over this place. Okay, so I hear about the Barn for several times per year, so we go. The way some wax poetic about it, you'd think it was akin to Ruth's Chris, The Palm, or Mortons. Oh my gosh, Aberdeen Barn is such a dump, both in looks and food quality. It is nothing like a high end steak house. I'm used to going to steakhouses and getting seafood, vegetables, and potatoes. First of all, they cook salmon like it's meat. It comes out tough and dark. There is only one veg choice (broccoli), and the potatoes were pretty lacking. The mashed potatoes were whipped a little too much and the baked potatoes are a little overdone. Seafood appetizers (clams and oysters) were good, but the toppings totally overwhelmed them. I haven't seen such a weak wine list in Charlottesville. It's like they totally ignore the fact that we have great wine here. The wines tend to be on the sweeter side, which says a lot about either the person in charge of the wine program or the clientele (unsophisticated). There is nothing artful about the bar drinks. They are just strong to keep the strange mix of people at the bar happy. BTW, children seated at the bar on a Saturday night is really strange for a place with which a high priced menu. The physical place is in desperate need of a refresh. You can be old school without having crap hanging from above and posters of nobodies on the walls. Also, spend $500 and get some flat screens that aren't 5" thick. The lighting might be yellow for effect or because the fixtures need cleaning. Who knows! We see all kinds of old school Cville people while we were there. People who probably think the Barn is a BIG night out in the city (across from an EconoLodge just on the outside of the bypass). I feel sorry for them. This place doesn't have the corner in prime rib, so I can't fathom why we'll ever return. read more

If you come to a restaurant like Aberdeen Barn, you are coming because you like a good prime rib. The Barn might just have the best prime rib I've had worldwide. Okay, well, that might be a little dramatic, but I've had prime rib at all of the titans in The United States - Morton's, Ruth's Chris, Del Frisco's, Bobby Vann's, etc. All of these locations are known as high quality and high dollar, and also somewhat fit into the chain category. Aberdeen Barn has two locations in Virginia and says that it is "Virginia's finest steakhouse." True. I've been here four times since being in Charlottesville for training, and other than one time where I ordered the Del Monico, I have gotten the Prime Rib every time. It is delicious, flavorful, melt in your mouth beef that tastes almost as fresh as it was cut the day before. Mr. Robert, the head chef (he wears the red hat) does an outstanding job with the dishes here and you will not leave hungry or disappointed. For dessert, go for the chocolate ganache cake or my personal favorite, creme brûlée. I've had creme brûlée in a lot of places before, but the one here is phenomenally good. Notable wine list as well, for the wine enthusiast. Warm and inviting dining room, friendly staff members, and insanely reasonable pricing given the quality of the meal. Great place. I've been to Aberdeen barn twice now and it's been a great meal each time. However, the location is kind of gross and the inside decor is a little off from room to room. Service: The service is usually slow and both times it took about 10-15 minutes for our server to notice that we were still waiting to have our drink order taken. The servers have never been particularly friendly, although they've never been unpleasant, and I feel that Aberdeen Barn is a bit lacking in this department. I would not recommend this place for a large party just because based on dining there twice with a party of two the service was slow and I can imagine with a large party size the staff would be overwhelmed. Food: The food here is awesome and the portions are huge. I have had the swordfish and salmon. The swordfish was fantastic, perfectly cooked and not to dry or fishy. The salmon was good but was a bit dry and overcooked, although it still tasted fine. The side portions are huge and usually really good. I've had the broccoli, baked potato, and french onion soup. The soup was really good, very flavorful. Broccoli was nothing special as far as seasonings go but it was good. The baked potato was great and the toppings options are good. My boyfriend has had the prime rib and strip steak and said both were excellent and cooked perfectly to order. The meat looked like it was high quality and they seem to have mastered cooking the different cuts. Overall a really good steakhouse, minus a few service and ambiance issues. read more

We've been to a number of steakhouses. Between the two of us, hundreds. Aberdeen didn't knock our socks off, but it did it for us when we wanted steak. Plus, I never thought those prices could co-exist with a steakhouse. It was ridiculously inexpensive for a finer establishment. The breadsticks arrived with a butterstick-hard tub of cheddar cheese. The steak came with three dipping sauces. It makes me wonder - what do they do with the rest of the tub of cheese not eaten? What do they do with the majority of the dips left untouched? How do you scrape away holes left by breadsticks; do they dump the dressings away? Anyway, our porterhouse was quite large and sufficient for two. We know our meats, and this wasn't top notch quality, but hey...it was cow, medium rare and charred. It satisfied our carnivore cravings, and made us smile. Our caesar was also shared, dressed fully and ample. Service was great throughout. The decor, as others have mentioned, is quite dim. Darkness doesn't equate romanticism, but it certainly helps lend the ambience of class and classic. read more

We stopped in here while visiting for my daughter's birthday. In our family, the person with the birthday gets to pick the place. She'd heard so much about Aberdeen (apparently the place is a local institution) that she decided it was a good choice. The place is designed like an old time steak house. Lots of hokey western memorabilia everywhere. Seriously...it looks like places I visited as a kid back in the 60s. I guess the low light levels help to hide the quaintness of the place...but not well enough. I had the escargot, which was decent. It's hard to get great escargot anywhere, so I was okay with it not being top notch. I also had the delmonico steak, which was a decent size...but for over $30, I'd almost expect it to be very, very good...and it really wasn't. Good, yes. Great, no. The service was excellent, however. The wait staff was quick to refill water glasses, and they seemed to use a team approach, to make sure that everyone at the table had what they wanted. I do commend Aberdeen for having the good sense to include some Virginia-made wines on their wine list. I'm always perplexed when a restaurant fails to support their local wineries. Kudos. To sum it up, the place is rather expensive considering the quality of the food, and the atmosphere is pretty much antiquated. The service is good, and I guess if you have some extra cash to blow, this place might be a hoot. But there are probably better - and more modern - steak places in town. read more

Over the years, I have developed high standards for my steaks and the corresponding value and this place did not even stack up to the Texas Roadhouse chain. The restaurant reminds me of a dark jazz club/sports bar, more than a steak house. The steaks were only ok and the seasoning the same. The pretzel sticks and cheese were an odd appetizer to serve and the salads were wilted and had big chunks of the core. I feel like I paid a high price for something Outback would not serve. I would give the waitstaff five stars if I could. They were exceptional!!! read more

After spending a long day touring VA Tech we drove to Charlottesville to tour UVA. We arrived around 7 to the Days Inn and were planning on calling out for pizza. We spotted the Aberdeen Barn when checking in, did a quick check on Yelp and decided no pizza for us! As tired as we were we dropped our bags, called to see if they had any availability (parking lot was full) and got a table a half hour later. What a delight! Walking in you really do feel like you are walking back in time, in a good way. We were greeting warmly and seated in the front room. As you walk in there is a glass enclosed refrigerator that displays the meat. Lots of beef! This is not one of those places for those watching calories or cholesterol . It's a steak house, I'm sure they have other items but I don't think this is the place for you. We had drinks and ordered the prime rib. We both ordered the regular cut or whatever the middle one was as they don't list the oz size. We we not disappointed, the servings were huge. Everything else we had was good but let me tell you, this was some seriously good prime rib and I'm a prime rib snob. It was the best I've ever had. Service was outstanding, Charles our waiter gave us excellent suggestions that were spot on. Now that our son has decided on UVA I can't wait for move in day, some parents get teary eyed not me, I trying to push up the day to get back the to Aberdeen. So the Aberdeen Barn is not a prime 5 star steakhouse like my favorites: Wolfgang's in Miami, The Old Homestead in AC, or Cut in Vegas. It also doesn't charge those $150 pp+ a la carte prices either. It is an excellent mid range steakhouse that will set you back $50-$80 pp for a full course meal with appetizers and drinks. Much less than a good chain e.g. Del Friscos or Mortons. That said I probably wouldn't rate it as highly or eat here as often if I didn't like prime rib. The prime rib medium rare or center cut blackened Delmonico, salad with house made dressings, barn potatoes, baked potato, shrimp cocktail, french onion and bisque soups are all awesome and a very good deal imo. Cocktails are pretty decent too. Reminds me of the Golden Steer in Vegas. Have not enjoyed the charred grill steaks but they won't cook them that way if you don't like burn marks on your steak. read more

Had the pleasure of dining here last night during our stay at a B&B nearby. First off, it is an old-fashioned place - dark, red leatherette booths, wagon-wheel chandeliers, sort of a stiff formality in an era where people don't dress up for dinner much just to get a steak. But for us that was part of the charm. We had a reservation and were seated quickly at a nice table for four (just the two of us - but we hate sitting at a tiny table for two!). They brought us a big basket of breadsticks (the cracker kind, not the bread kind) and a crock of cheese spread and some real butter - man it was good, we could have eaten it all but glad we didn't. The wine list was good, local wines plus some standard wines - nice by the glass selection. We both ordered the regular cut of prime rib and it was a huge, thick, bone-in portion. It came with a salad and a side dish (I had mashed potatoes and my husband had a baked). The salads came with a trio of dressings - blue cheese, thousand, and ranch - again, charmingly old-fashioned. The meat was great, resting in lots of Au jus. It was exactly as we ordered - medium rare on the rare side. There was a generous topping of grated horseradish (taste/texture sort of like grated radishes) - that's a first for us and we didn't like it much so we asked for horseradish sauce. We mixed the bottled horseradish our waiter brought with sour cream and that was better. We also shared a side of creamed spinach - not too creamy, but good. If I have a criticism besides the strange grated horseradish it's that my mashed potatoes were brought in a separate little bowl and there was no way to get the Au jus spooned over. They got cold pretty quickly and probably weren't the best mashed potatoes I've ever had. It would have been better to have them on the platter with the meat, but do they make platters that big? But overall the meal was great, our waiter was pretty attentive, and we had an excellent prime rib experience. We would return and probably will. read more

How the mighty have fallen. Having just returned to the area after two decades away, I wanted to see if Aberdeen Barn was still as good as I remembered. Unfortunately, it's not. I invited two friends to have dinner with my regular dining partner and myself. My friends ordered a ribeye and prime rib, while we ordered filet mignon and scallops. The breadsticks were an inauspicious start, as they seemed less than fresh. To be fair, my friends enjoyed their steaks more than we enjoyed our food. My filet was cooked to the right temperature, but was otherwise unexceptional. The items that really disappointed were the scallops and the rolls served with the meal. The scallops looked closer to bay scallops than sea scallops, and the preparation was disappointing. Not very flavorful and definitely overcooked. The rolls were very hard, with my partner in crime doing a little drumming on them with her fork. The service also came up very short. Our waiter just seemed like he was annoyed that he had to wait on us, and would rather be doing almost anything else. Note to persons who have problems with mobility. This building predates the ADA - the bathrooms are tiny and tucked into a corner that requires you to negotiate stairs and swinging doors. read more

Aberdeen Barn has a more romantic feel inside. It is great for a date night or for nice dinner. Overall, Aberdeen Barn is very good. I have been here a couple of times. First, they put "breadsticks" and pub cheese on table after being seated. The breadsticks are pretzels. A little different, but good. One time for my entree I ordered the crab cakes. I was skeptical as I've eaten lots of crab cakes living in MD. These crab cakes were tasty. I would order them again. My parents and I went to dinner on Wednesday. We ordered the butter barbecue shrimp as an appetizer and these were AMAZING. It is a creole sauce on the shrimp. Creole isn't my favorite flavor, but this sauce was GOOD! The waitress recommended dipping bread into the sauce left over and WOW. Highly recommend this appetizer. I ordered a filet with a baked potato. The filet was good but not the best filet I've ever had. It was salty, which was the only real negative. I definitely recommend Aberdeen Barn. It has been a go to for my family for years!! read more

Went here after game 2 of the UVa v. UC-Irvine series back in June '11. The decor was like a good ole' fashioned barn turned into a restaurant. Had a few big screen tv's scattered around the place which gave it a bit of a sports-bar feel, but you knew you were coming for a big steak. It captured that home-town/college-town feel very well. The place cooks it meat on top of a charcoal grill. Since we got there so late, unfortunately there wasn't much coal left on the grill. I didn't mind much since I like my steak medium-rare. Service was very friendly, but that's expected in the south. I never write any reviews, but I had for this. I don't know where the bad reviews are coming for, but I had a really good experience, coming from somebody that has lived in different cities. First, the steak is great! One of the best I had, juicy and a little bit crusty outside, perfect amount of salt and very large (12 oz)! The sides were great, the salad fresh (they also use a very good olive oil), the fries tasty (who cares about the breadsticks?). In addition they had a good selection of wines, international and also from Virginia vineyards. Our Virginia red was really good! Second, m the price was right, I don't feel It was overpriced given the quality of the food and size. Third, our server was super nice, very polite and we even stayed a bit after they closed. At last, the restaurant has an old school vibe, different than trendy ones, but it adds a lot of soul and makes the experience different, more special. You can definitely see that the restaurant has been around since the 60s. If you're visiting Charlottesville and want to experience a more local vibe, but also have great food you have to come here. I wish it was closer to DC because I would be going there any time I crave for steak. read more

We ate dinner here tonight, right before they closed. Our waiter Drew was accommodating and attentive, always keeping both our waters and drinks filled before we had a chance to even ask - awesome service! We had a New York strip steak with baked potato and crab cakes with mashed potatoes. You have your choice of sides, so if you find this is a weird combination, it was strictly our request. The steak was perfectly cooked, tasty, and without the usual fatty edging - finished every morsel! The crab cakes were so delicious! I've been trying variations across Virginia, and I would put them in first place - no joke! The baked potato was huge and the mashed potatoes were so creamy/dreamy! Nice place all around. The atmosphere is nice. Service is polite, prompt and professional. You're obviously coming here for a steak. Steak is good. And by good i mean it's not a $40 steak. Definitely over priced for what you're gonna get. read more
