We went on a Friday as this place was a great location, walking distance from our downtown hotel. The first thing I tried were the falafels, which were dry and tasted old. I was a bit disappointed. My boyfriend wouldn't even finish 1. Next we tried our plates. The plates were packed with food, which was great for the price. They ran out of regular hummus, but my lamb with the spicy hummus and rice was good, the lamb was tender, and I loved the veggies in the rice. The lentil salad was also really good. My boyfriend's chicken breast was pretty dry, the only way we could eat it was with hummus. Overall, the place is good. I'd go again if I were in downtown Houston, the lamb and rice and lentils were great, but I would avoid the chicken breast and falafels.

The chicken is seasoned really well, tender, and full of flavor. The best part is that my kids love it too, which is not always easy to find! Anytime I can find a place where everyone actually enjoys the food, it's a win. The hummus is really good and goes perfectly with their pita. The pita is fresh, soft, and honestly makes the meal even better. I've also tried some of their sandwiches, and they are a great option when you want something filling but still full of flavor. I also have to mention the pickles because they are so good! They add that perfect salty, tangy crunch that goes really well with everything else. Overall, Petra's is a great addition to the Shadow Creek/Pearland area. The food is fresh, flavorful, the staff is knowledgeable, the service is great, and they have a lot of great options. I'm really glad they are closer to me now because it makes it so much easier to stop by when we're craving Greek and Lebanese food. We'll definitely be back to try more of the menu!

I went here for lunch and was told they were short-staffed, resulting in a one-hour wait for chicken shawarma to-go (order 1/2 lb of chicken, no sides). We were then told we could place the order for dinner instead, but it seemed like they had run out of several items by the time we picked it up. Unfortunately, about an hour after eating the food, I became very sick with food poisoning. Given the long wait, lack of communication, and what happened afterward, I will not be returning, even as a previously loyal weekly customer.

Ridiculous is an understatement; we were also sitting right in front of the kitchen so I don't understand how she kept passing by us without batting an eye. There were tables that came after us and left before us, truly disappointing. At one point when we were finally able to get her attention, she said "let me drop this water off and I'll be right back." Spoiler alert - she didn't. She dropped it off and went to tend to other tables before finally coming back to us. Besides all of that, the food was good and eased our frustration a little bit. We ordered the trio dip as a starter and circling back to the service complaint for a second, we thought she would've put it in before more guests started pouring in, but she didn't!! So we were left waiting with no food whatsoever, everything ended up coming out at the same time. Anyway, moving on - the food was seasoned very well, and the flavor was all there, perfect and just the way I expected. It satisfied my cravings and I have no complaints about that. Overall, I think the establishment could be a little better. It's not a huge dining area so I didn't expect service to take that long. I don't mean to be harsh and I understand there was only one server, but I don't remember waiting so long for my order to be taken at a restaurant. It pairs very well with the provided garlic sauce, and I love how well seasoned the fries are. The service was helpful with answering any questions. It takes a bit of waiting for the food to come out but they make the food fresh and hot by the time you receive it.

My penchant for late night food led me to their Med Center spot, where I impulsively ordered most of their menu. It may have cost me a good chunk of change (#1), but the biggest loser was my expectations. Situated on the corner of Almeda and Hepburn, Abu Omar Halal shares the building with the Exxon gas convenience store. Despite being a fixture in the neighborhood, the signage looks fresh and updated. Just below the sign were a couple of their food trucks, thought they ee new and updated and directly beneath is are a couple of their food trucks that weren't in operation. The format is pretty simple: Choose a protein (chicken / beef shawarma, lamb gyro, chicken zinger (aka fried chicken), or falafel and then choose a meal option where it can be anything from a simple sandwich / quesadilla to something more fast casual like a rice or salad bowl. The arabi is a fan fave, which is a series of meats in roll form that is cut up and accompanied by a bed of fries and a pickled cucumbers. There is a double version which two wraps can be combined in the same box for a cool $23. The hummus ($5), kibbeh ($3), fried cauliflower ($5), fries ($5), grape leaves ($5.25) and falafel ($5.50) round out the sides. However, there a number of red flags. Inattentive staff meant there was a wait despite the place being empty. I ended up standing around for a few minutes (#2) while other late night goers waited in their cars while observing an empty kitchen and a few dirty tables. The meats on the spit were sitting idly while looking really dry and there was no one to maintain the spin. The desserts sat inside of a display case with an incredible amount of condensation from how muggy it was. It didn't look particularly appetizing. Eventually someone came and I was able to order a smattering of many things that included a beef arabi ($14.75), chicken shawarma rice bowl ($14.75), lamb gyro loaded fries ($15), a falafel salad bowl ($14.75), an "Italian" shawarma platter ($17), and a chicken shawarma sandwich ($10.75) with a few sides that included the grape leaves, kibbeh, single side of falafel, and hummus. Most of the food was an abomination. The loaded fries was practically a brick since the cheese was microwaved so hard that separating the (overly dry) fries from the solidified cheese was next to impossible. Instead, I picked it up like a funnel cake at a state fair and took bites out of it as a whole. It was not my best look. The falafel was super dry and didn't seem all that fresh. The salad bowl was extremely underwhelming and the rice bowl was unmemorable, save for extra pourings of the sauce. I suppose the arabi and Italian shawarma were the semi-saving grace, as my group of dining companions enjoyed these the most. The kibbe was solid, despite feeling a bit pricey at basically a $1.50 a bite. I'm glad I finally was able to cross this place off my bookmarks and finally got an opportunity to try this beloved chain. While I don't rule out a future return, I think I'll be looking to give the other locations a shot first. _________ (#1) Just a $120+, NBD.
