First off this is a pretty classy place that you can take a date or have a family lunch. Nice decor. The service was good. They were semi busy and didn't have enough waiters but someone helped our waiter with getting our drinks etc. Very good team work. We tried all of the salsa - 4 different versions. My order was fine. My husbands and the kids meal on the other hand was not. My husband got enchiladas and steak. Steak to be medium. We ordered to go. So he didn't notice until we got home and he cut into his steak. It was raw! He had NO sides that are to come with the order. The kids nuggets. Pathetic. 2 tiny nuggets and a few fries. Used to love it Update. Sent an email with the order confirmation. Got an email. They called my husbands number. But, couldn't get no answer. I informed I forgot I put his number for the pickup and I would call when my twins took their nap. Called. Never got a call back. ‍ I don't know if they want proof we are there and what I said what he ordered was true? But, they evidence of me emailing the confirmation order with what we ordered should have been enough. Note; be that annoying customer that asks for a knife to be sure your steak is cut right. And PULL everything out of your to go bag to be sure you got what you paid for. read more

Early dinner Friday . 4 in party. No wait to sit. What we did wait for was a wait staff to take any orders. She seemed confused at times, slow in service. The food - especially the Queso, VERY disappointing, thin and not very "cheesy". Ordered a large guacamole - for the table, it was served with a small bowl of chips - not even warm, kind of tasteless. The summer salad - my table mates enjoyed - might be nice if the lettuce was more of a mix of greens. The quesadilla from another tablemate, was destined for the dog dish. Very dirty bar room with about half of the tables taken and all others had dirty dishes on them. Disappointing to walk in at 9:00pm on a Thursday to take thirty minutes to get a table bused. He took dishes off for us only to put them on a table next to ours. Drinks were our topic of conversation instead of our planned topics because of communication problems between bar tender and waitress or a waitress that didn't know her liquors. (?) I would have imagined someone would have given an explanation to this madhouse like, we are short handed, or, just go tell manager the tables need to be bused! When my drink came back so sweet I told that to the waitress when she asked. I wanted to discretely ask bartender for a shot so I could fix it quickly, someone else chimed in to help. Then, asks, "dressed"? I said however....Thinking he'd come over to give it to me, instead asks, did you say "dressed" or not? At this point I gave up....said no, just tequila. The waitress was working as fast as she could with little or no help. I am so sad I can't take friends to a bar in Abilene without this experience. We've been before and enjoyed. Next time I'll try and sit at the bar to get a drink the way I like it. Menu has "citrus" instead of saying bottled sweet and sour or fresh squeezed lime juice. Was just there. They were packed so went to the bar. The bar service was excellent. The food is always great, had a chimi. Cheese/jalpeno appetizer. The food here is amazing! The fajitas are so good! I love all the items I have tried so far. The enchiladas are the best in town. The atmosphere is cool and the kids love to pitch coins in the fountain. I want to give Cristal a shout out. You are an awesome server, we will request to be sat in your area next time. If you want quality Mexican cuisine with no worries about preparation, go here. Yeah, I know, it's a chain, but it really is tasty. Items I recommend: chili rellenos (cheese) with green sauce, enchiladas (any), chimichanga, fajitas, salads, and as an appetizer, the queso (but eat this quickly, as it cools fast in the dish they put it in). For the past 8 months I've cut my carbs down, so yesterday when we went, I ordered the lunch chicken fajitas with romaine lettuce instead of tortillas (it was great and the waitress said it was no problem). I also chose the spinach casserole (amazing) in place of the rice/beans/papas. They are willing to please here, so that is nice. It's also always clean and great for intimate dinners or family outings (the seating is spread out adequately). They also have a great bar, and their margaritas are spot on. You won't be disappointed in choosing Abuelos. read more

I ordered one of the nacho family meals and was beyond disappointed. The food was ordered for 4-6 people but was more for 3 people. The add-in to make the nachos were not significant enough to make a decent nacho plate. What was advertised and what I received were two totally different things. I ordered a dip sampler or their version of it and never received it. For how much I paid, I would rather go to Rosa's and get a better selection. Their multi layer dip and margaritas are where its at. At least with their margaritas that are on the rocks. The frozen are margarita machine quality and to fruity for my taste. other problems that I have with them, and why they did not get 4 stars are: 1. Crowded parking area. Its hard to park and once you do find a spot its harder to leave due to traffic. 2. LONG! wait times and lines especially on weekends. 3. You have to order two drinks when you do order if you order soda as you will not be getting a refill. Unless you want tea or water. 4. Waiting for your bill, and waiting, and waiting, and waiting. Update: on My last trip the drink issue was fixed(plenty of refills) and the waiting for your bill issue was vastly improved. As such I have moved them from 3 stars up to 4 stars. read more

Abuelos has been one of our go to restaurants for years. However, on a recent night we ordered the traditional nachos as we always have and found that they have started adding a flavorless refried beans to the dish and much less chicken (we always order the traditional shredded chicken). It changes the dish entirely and we are not fans. I am sure it is one more way to maximize profits and reduce food cost, but I hope FCI will rethink this decision. This is my favorite place to take good customers or family for Mexican Food. Large menu and normally excellent service makes eating a pleasure. Nice bar and good drink service if you have time for drinks. A little noisy sometimes but the place is normally close to full or sometimes even a short wait during peak hours. In town visiting for the weekend and this was the first time eating at an Abuelos. It was our third choice after discovering other Mexican restaurants were closed for the holidays. After eating here, I can understand why the one in my hometown never has a crowd now. While the service was outstanding, the food was pretty mediocre, especially for the expense of it. It did come out hot and surprisingly fast though. I had the beef enchiladas with some kind of potatoes which my companions raved about. I found them piping hot but a little bland tasting. The enchiladas had some weird hybrid cross of a red sauce/chili thing going on. My companions had the cheese enchiladas and the avacado enchiladas. Neither bothered​ to finish their food. Overall it was just okay, filling but I would not go out of my way to eat at the place again. This restaurant chain feels like some East Coast version of what they think Mexican food might taste like in their mind, but they've never actually had good Mexican food, so it never quite hits the mark. If your craving Mexican food and this is your last choice, then I'd definitely go for Chinese. Myself, I won't​ bother with this place again. read more

I tried the Abilene Abuelo's because I had really bad service at the Austin one and was given a gift certificate. I was hesitant to go back to the one in Austin and I am in Abilene frequently so I decided to give it a try. I have to say, even with almost an hour wait to be seated that the service and foot was outstanding. We did not tell the server that we had a gift certificate because I wanted normal service and not good service just because we had bad service at the other one. The difference in the food and service was night and day. Even with the place as packed as it was our server was there for our every need and we did not have to wait for anything. I will definitely be going here again. They should send people from this store to get the Austin store back in shape. read more

Very disappointing. Poor service. Both meals brought out had something wrong with them. One had to be returned to the kitchen and by the time it was brought out again my dining partner had finished eating. The chili relleno was awful. Instead of stuffing the pepper with cheese, the pepper that was still filled with seeds was laid on top of some cheese. It was a greasy mess and inedible. We went around 1 pm on a Saturday, calling ahead to be placed on a wait list. We were promptly seated and I was quite pleased we would again enjoy the service from Josh, a new waitstaff. My husband wanted a smaller entrée, but didn't know what a Chimichanga was nor how spicy the shredded beef inside. Josh asked another employee, a lady I neglected to get the name of. After a little discussion, she offered to bring a sample to him. Returning with a small bowl containing a big bite of the chicken, pork, and beef! All 3 were great, and he chose the shredded beef in a flour tortilla smothered in queso, with charro beans and quacamole as sides. My chicken fajitas for one came out steaming hot, as were the charro beans with big pieces of bacon and steamed corn tortillas. Josh remembered the special request for whole charred jalapenos and sliced avacado on the side. He kept the tea and Dr Pepper coming. You rock, Josh! Leftovers always reheat well. 99% of the time, we are very pleased with Abuelo's food and waitstaff. read more
