So disappointed! Used to be one of ours favorite restaurants. Our server was so busy holding up the wall and chatting and we were ignored. When she greeted us we immediately ordered. Very poor service by Melanie, and we were her only table. When I didn't eat my lunch, Durango, we asked if there was a different chef and she told us no, but continued on telling us that the flan is inconsistent based on what lady makes them. Abuelo's is a nice restaurant with a very good wait staff. The chain offers a good sized menu and a wide variety of drinks and appetizers. The food quality on our last visit left something to be desired, however it likely points to the differences between chain restaurants and local establishments for Mexican food. We had chimichangas - steak and green chili pork, and the fact that neither was shredded with strong flavor was disappointing. The meat was cubed and didn't taste great, and the cheese was too much for the needed proportions of fillings. I will share the ambience was very nice and business was good for a weekend. The servers were both very nice and everything was brought out promptly and hot. Not the best culinary experience, however for those looking for Mexican food without a lot of spice this is a good option. read more

Having passed by many times on my way to the Chandler Mall, this was my first time in and probably my last. Although the location is odd (in a shared parking lot with Walmart), the décor and ambiance are regal in a casino buffet way. We made a reservation for our party of 5 on a Sunday evening, although I don't know that it was necessary; people were being seated without reservations. Complimentary chips and salsa are always a nice touch. They were good; the assortment of 3-4 salsas was nice. Our party ordered various chicken enchilada combos ($18-22) and I had the chicken tampiquena ($22) and blackberry mint mojito. While the portions are large (enough for leftovers), flavors are average. Fiancé felt his crispy beef taco was something he could make at home and my aunt preferred the cilantro lime rice at Chipotle Iol. The blackberry mint mojito was fresh, and it was nice they brought out the shaker! We were too full to try any of the desserts. As most Yelpers have summed it up, Abuelo's is your average Tex-Mex. We had a great dinner at the bar area, definitely our favorite spot in the restaurant though you get friendly and attentive service through the restaurant. Tessa took great care of us and when my wife's food was delivered incorrectly, Tessa made a quick recovery and made it seamless. As I said in previous reviews of this restaurant makes you feel welcome and all your needs are taken care of. Simple and to the point with a friendly vibe and never having an empty glass of chip bowl. The gentleman overseeing chips and salsa take great pride in their job and are sharp and attentive. Our dinner plans changed and we ended up at the bar for our meal. The bartender was engaging, provided great service and fair food recommendations...but his strength was his ability to make great drinks! I had a smoked orange infused margarita was was unique and went down with no problems. My husband went with the house margarita on the rocks and found it to be tasty. For dinner I went with the Chile Rellenos. I liked how they offered the two peppers stuffed with different ingredients. The beef was different from what I typically enjoy and found I really liked it. The meat was tender and the flavor was great. My husband went with the Barramundi fish dish. The fish was moist and the sauce was good. It wasn't something so spectacular that he'd order it again. The chips and salsa offered with our meal was great. The three varieties of salsa gave us choices and a chance to compare which we liked the most. I wasn't craving Mexican food but my wife heard about this place from some colleagues and wanted to try it. Being that I'm fat and have never said no to tacos it didn't take more than a lifted eyebrow and I caved. First off, the atmosphere was amazing and was complete with plants, decor, and culturally rich murals. The service was friendly and so so helpful. We were started off with chips and a trio of salsas that were super flavorful and had a pleasant smoky balance. I got the "Grande" with enchiladas, chili relleno, beans, and a taco. I think the chili relleno was the best I've had, it was perfectly crispy on the outside with a wonderful flavor within. There was great attention of detail in presentation using a tortilla to prop up the taco, very nice. I got to say I was impressed with the flavor throughout this whole meal, even the shrimp on my wife's salad was packed with flavor. I definitely recommend this place for any business or personal occasion. I really liked that the price wasn't too steep either. Solid 3, maybe 3.5. Came here for a work dinner. I have driven by many times and never felt compelled to stop in, but I figured it's a new place for me so I'll give it a shot. Nothing was wrong, nothing was great. It's very in the middle. Hence the 3 stars. The food all sounded good and looked good upon arrival but the common theme of everything I ate was...bland. Could use some salt and spices. I was excited before I ordered since the menu says "Tex-mex" but I've had some really great Tex-mex in Austin, this was not that. Service was good, the server was friendly and food came out quick so I have no real complaints for that. It really comes down to price points and enjoyability of the food. I thought it was pricey for me to feel "eh" about it. I ordered a combo platter so that I would have leftovers for lunch and could try different things. THE GRANDE - Beef, chicken, cheese enchiladas, with a cheese chile relleno, tamale, crispy beef taco, guacamole. When the food arrived it looked pretty good. But, first couple bites of rice and beans I thought it needed salt so I added some table salt. I ate 1/2 of it and with each new item, it all tasted relatively the same. And at some point I thought, "I know what this reminds me of- Taco Bell". Expensive Taco Bell in a nicer looking environment. I would actually just prefer Taco Bell lol. Me and my mom were really craving Mexican so we decided to stop in for lunch. Our server was Zeus. He was not very nice or attentive. Besides that, the atmosphere was really pretty and elegant and the food was A-OK. The Abuelo's Dip Sampler was excellent. The house made Chicharonnes were really yummy along with the sauces. The Queso Diablo and the Bean Dip were personal favorites. I got a cup of Tortilla Soup, would not order again as it was cold and bland. I got the Quesadilla El Horno for an Entree. The service and food have remained consistent to that original 5 star review & it has become a fixture restaurant for our family & friends when dining out. I really debated whether this should be a 3 or 4 star review. First off the restaurant is immaculately clean, has interesting decor, and the tables are spaced enough for privacy. You're not all crammed together like many places these days. Many thanks for that! The service was good, relatively quick, and friendly. Hopefully the restaurant treats its employees well because my waitress said she had been there 5 years. The food... not gonna lie here. This is my second visit and it was not as good as I remember. It wasn't bad, it was just so-so. I ordered pork tenderloin abrigada and while the pork was not over cooked, it was just on the edge; also it was really over salted. Restaurants need to use more herbs, less salt. The enchiladas were nothing special, a little oily. The potatoes and beans were pretty good. Food quantity was massive. read more

I ordered an à la carte Chile Relleno it was excellent, Not traditional at all but Darn Good. Remembered a little late to take a picture. I put the pic in anyway. I ordered the Australian Seabass with the shrimp sauce didn't need the shrimp sauce. It was excellent. The shrimp sauce - Mojo De Ajo was good though. We've visited this home-style, family-oriented TexMex resto a few times and found it to be above average in taste, service, consistency and extravagant in décor and interior design! This Amarillo Texas born restaurant puts a good spin on Southwestern favorites and presents them well. This multi-state operation does an excellent and resilient job of product consistency from visit to visit, which not many such operations can extend. Beginning with their extensive outdoor Mexican/Southwestern square-like layout and design to many really, really good food offerings, you start with entering another country and leave with positively afflicted and enhanced taste buds! We've had the opportunity and pleasure of enjoying the El Jefe Margarita, which I might say you shouldn't have two! Some of our fave meals have included Mi Abuelo's Manjar dinner with three beautifully prepped enchiladas drenched with cheese, beef and chile con carne, draped with two eggs - mmmmm good! The Juarez introduces your toasty beef tacos, a tamale, and some of the most detectible chicken and cheese enchiladas I've had in the Valley. The Carnitas Taco Plate is excellent. You gotta try the Tres Leches Cake. Their Salsa was so good, we asked for some to take home. We've had other eats here, but I won't go into details - they have all been very worthwhile. Abuelo's is a pretty decent chain Mexican restaurant. Our friends have fond memories of their Abuelo's back in Ohio. We have fond memories of ours back in Wichita. We arrived for dinner and asked about a table. The hostesses at the front clearly wanted to be elsewhere. They could not have been more disinterested in being pleasant or accommodating. There were MANY tables open, but we, the only people in the waiting area, had to wait a long time to be seated. When we were, our server, Johnny, could not have been more lovely. He was super attentive and never missed a thing! He was a blessing. The food was just okay. The queso was hot but bland. That pretty much sums up the rest of the menu items we tried too. Dang. TL;DR: Abuelo's lol "Oh no baby, what is you doin?" Save your time and money and go grab Someburros right down the street. We've been coming here since 2019/2020. Last time we were here, the food was meh and over priced. I normally get the Juarez, which is good, but tried the ground beef soft tacos which are the worst tacos I've ever had, anywhere. No flavor - tragic. The Pechuga con Calabaza is usually great but last time it was super salty. We chalked it up to trying new things other than our usuals and some accidental over-salting by the kitchen and said maybe next time will be better. This time was horrendously comical. Someone else in the reviews here mentioned Taco Bell and that's exactly what I thought, too! Except TB hasn't even ever done me this dirty. I ordered the Durango burrito (with no queso). I received what could be mistaken for a little beef enchilada. $16 for this LOL When it came to the table we all laughed and thought I'd been brought someone's kids meal by mistake I lightheartedly asked the waitress if this was the Durango burrito or a soft taco. Without hesitation or surprise, she just said "Oh I'll have them remake it for you." (Are the servers used to having to do this? I feel so bad for them!) My guy... the kitchen served up the same Taco Bell mockery. Worse than that, the waitress took my first plate away entirely and wasted a plate of food. If they would have just brought me another soft taco (lol) I would have been fine. Why waste food like that? Anyway, now I'm just being petty, but I never got the sour cream we were charged for and the flour tortillas we ordered on the side were the smallest weirdest tortillas we've ever seen. I had no idea what this place was. I was near Chandler mall and wanted a margarita but wasn't feeling excited about any of the places near the mall. I saw this and thought surely a place called Abuelo's will have margaritas. I was surprised to find such a heavily decorated place but turns out its a chain. There's quite the interesting mural to the left as you walk in (seriously, give this some time -- it gets more intriguing as you look at it). The dining area has faux balconies all around it with fake plants. It's all a bit cheesy and yet seems very clean and it ends up being relaxing and fun. There were $5 margaritas for HH -- frozen or regular. This was good! We also tried a fancier $15 margarita, which came in a shaker with a charred orange slice. This was quite different than the lighter, lime-y HH house margarita but very good. Chips were thin, crispy, and warm and came with 3 salsas. I didn't care for the bright red or green ones, but the darker red one was good. Service was great! Would definitely come by again at least for drinks and snacks. read more

We ate at their Peoria location in the P83 area. We are on a plant based diet so we ordered the veggie fajitas, minus sour cream and cheese. They were good but honestly they would have been a lot better with vegan sour cream. The black beans and rice were delicious. The portion was huge so glad we shared it. We still couldn't eat it all. If your vegan or plant based just realize you don't have a lot of options. They do have a vegetarian menu (w/dairy/cheese) so you'll have no problems. Ok. I typically try to avoid chain restaurants. Just because I want to see the mom and pop restaurants make it. But we have never been to this one in particular and it is close to the house. We were greeted shortly after arriving and it's really pretty. Makes me think of the inside of Caesar's palace in Vegas. Sky colored ceiling. La Hacienda, opened courtyard feel for the dining area. Staff are friendly and offer suggestion. The lime/pineapple/cilantro salsa stuff I could eat with a spoon as my main meal! We get more options than I'm use to here also. Like the sauce on my enchilada. Red and green of course. But also a sour cream or cheese sauce..... Ah man. I was enjoying everything so much and just pulled this out of my drink. We remembered going to this restaurant quite some time ago and decided to try it again. Once I saw the GF menu I knew how it was going to go. I mean, authentic Mexican restaurants are mostly gluten free, this place was not. The GF nachos they brought be were probably the most disgusting thing I've tasted in 2023. Ok moving on. I ordered tamales. The beans on the plate looked and tasted like they spent too much time under the heater and the tamales were no different. And to be honest, they just lacked flavor. My daughter ordered cheese nachos off the kids menu, she was less than impressed. Everyone at our table felt the same way. The only reason they got a two and not a one is because our server was very nice and she was on top of it. For the price, we expected it to be much better. I was told about this texmex restaurant from a coworker. I'm glad he didn't tell me anything about this place. As soon as I walked in the doors I was in ah with the lighting, music and design of this fantastic little Mexican restaurant. Service was super responsive and seated us quickly. The chips were warm and thin. Just the way I love them. Three different salsas were a nice touch. Something sweet about the green one. Maybe I tasted a hint pineapple? I'm not sure but it was great. I ordered the Steak Chimichanga. I forgot how good texmex chimmys are. That beautiful warm cheese all over my burrito. And the steak was perfectly cooked due to the texture and moisture in the meat. This plate really hit the spot. Yes it's a little pricey but definitely worth the cost. I would recommend this gem to those who come from outta town and are craving fine tex mex food. read more
