This place has a very warm and inviting atmosphere. The honey-ginger lemonade is absolutely amazing! That deserves four stars on its own. The food itself was okay...everything seemed to have the same texture and spice (a friend and I shared the Doro Wot and the Beyaynetu), except for the Aterkik Alicha, which was very flavorful and provided a nice break from the spice on the other dishes. I wouldn't mind coming back again, some of the dishes the tables around us ordered looked worth a try, but it isn't a place that's high up on my recommendation list. read more

Yum! If you've never had Ethiopian, you should give it a shot. If you like Indian, you'll enjoy this. Tibs and red lentils are amazing. Be prepared for family style and eating with your hands (not really, you use your hands to scoop the food up with a sort of sourdough crepe). We took a friend here who had never experienced Ethiopian food. I love Ethiopian food and thought it would be a unique experience for my friend. This was my first time to this restaurant and I was very underwhelmed by the food. The lamb dish (Kilwa Beggie) was decent but the veggie combo (Beyaynetu) was flavorless and the Tilapia dish (Asa Dulet) was just plain horrible. This is coming from all 3 of us, two of us being already well acquainted with Ethiopian food. The decor and atmosphere was clean and inviting and the waitress was friendly. We didn't finish our plates and nobody wanted to take the leftovers. There are much better Ethiopian options in Portland. read more

Nice people and decent food. However, the service is glacially slow, and the portions are rather small. Don't go there hungry. At our first visit, it took two hours to get our food. On our second, we were unacknowledged for so long as we sat with our menus that we gave up and left. It's just not worth it. Bete Lukas remains our favorite Ethiopian restaurant: the price are lower, the portions are larger, the combo plates are more varied, the service is efficient, and the food is just as good, if not better. read more

Came in with some friends because we were just walking by and it smelled amazing. We got a veggie sampler and then each got our own entree. everything was so good we ended up sharing everything trying to convince each other we had picked the best one. It's apparent that lots of love goes into this business. Proficiently-cooked meats. For example,ribs and stews are obviously cooked separately and accordingly to bring out the best respective flavor and texture. Vegetables are well-seasoned and retain their vegetal flavor. Its a family owned resturant. They offer great food and hospitality ! It feels like home. Its a small place and can get busy during weekends so try to get there early. I tried veggie combo and it was delicious ! The food is also very well presented. Delicious food, fun ambiance, nice service...the trifecta of a good restaurant. We ordered the lamb dish, a beef dish, and the vegetable sampler, and asked if they could serve it family-style (which they are happy to do). That's the traditional way. I do love enjoying one big platter of food altogether - it makes you feel really connected with the other people, rather than each hunching over your own plate. The restaurant is in a former house which makes for a fun dining environment. Service was very friendly and gave us a few menu tips which helped tremendously. (Let me pass this one along to you: the first beef dish on the menu, the minced one, is served raw like steak tartare. We were going to order this but she told us it was raw. We were so glad she did so we could switch to a cooked beef dish. Now you know too!) read more

Absolutely delicious and authentic Ethiopian/Eritrean food. Loved the vegetarian platter, the lamb and the chicken. The sambusa appetizers were also fantastic. Very homey restaurant, with attentive and friendly staff. It was our kids' first try at Ethiopian food and I think it will become a life-long favorite for them. I walked by with my best friend the other day, and noticed a new place had opened up. I have had Ethiopian food before, but this was a thousand times better. Completely authentic, affordable, and great environment. I ordered Aterkik Alicha & Gomen, while my friend tried Shiro & Hamli. The flavor was phenomenal. Intelligently seasoned and savory. Everything was served atop "Injera," which is an almost crepe-like thin bread- moist, tangy and perfect flavor combination for dipping with my entree. My friend and I couldn't stop eating. I also appreciated the cleanliness. The bathroom was nicely decorated, and had a variety of nice soap and lotion that smelled really nice. The service was EXCELLENT. Very friendly and helpful and happy. I will be back. I will bring others. Maybe I shouldn't have written a review. I want to keep it to myself, secretly. read more

i visited this restaurant almost an year back when they used to be open for lunch also.. i went there after some of my friends recommended it.. we loved all the food.. and also the wine ( it was a unique ethiopean white wine ).. i had the kilwa beggie which tasted great and my husband had the beef item.. both were sufficient in quantity and very flavorful.. the lady who seated us even mentioned the name of the market from where she got the wine! very nice restaurant.. read more

There's Eritrean restaurant food then there's really yummy Eritrean restaurant food. Abyssinian Kitchen is the latter. Tender lamb, steaming hot chicken on the bone that fell off to the touch, fresh homemade cheese, even gluten-free injera bread. They do takeout too. We're going back soon. read more

I have had Ethiopian a lot all over North America (hopefully some day in Ethiopia!!). Abyssinian Kitchen is the best I have had. I started out by getting their ginger lemonade to drink. The person dining with me said she didn't want anything other than water, but after she tased the ginger lemonade she changed her mind and ordered one, it is delicious. Totally worth having. The food was so perfectly seasoned and cooked. We ordered Beyaynetu (the veggie sampler) and Doro Wot ("chicken in traditional berbere sauce"). The yellow lentils were so amazingly cooked, still ever so slightly firm in the middle. The red lentils were also outstanding. The collard greens blew us both away, one of the best things I have eaten. The chicken was fine, nice and spicy, but the veggie dishes were the real stand outs. The service was outstanding. So friendly and welcoming. The restaurant is cozy in an old house. Super clean and nice inside. I will be back often, I think I just found a new favorite in Portland. I need to go back and try everything else on the menu. read more

I have been to a fair share of Habesha restaurants in the northwest, with majority of my experiences in Portland. Overall, I've had pleasant experience, but this specific location was by far the WORST! When we first arrived everything went as expected. We were seating in a timely manner and started to discuss the menu. After we had made a decision on what we were going to eat, we waited 25 ADDITIONAL minutes for the server to take our order. After the order was taken it took about 5-7 minutes before the server returned with our food. At this point, we were a bit weary of the quality of the food because in our experiences of fresh well prepared Ethiopian/Eritrean dishes, it usually takes more time to cook/ prepare. We also couldn't help but notice that guests that were seated before us had not received their food. When the food came out, my guest was caught off guard immediately looking at the plate. The portion were extremely small and didn't look freshly prepared. My guest caught the servers attention, which was not a easy task being that the server was running around nonstop from the moment we walked in. My guest went on to ask the server about the portion size and if it was an appetizer plate because it was not the usual family style plate that we are accustomed to at virtually all Ethiopian/Eritrean restaurants. It was more of a personal plate with a tiny amount of injera and food in general. A lady from back that was walking by stepped in and answered no, and they walked away. At this point, we are debating on whether to stay and eat or just walk out. We decided to stay and eat. We noticed that the temperature of the food was lukewarm. There was such a small amount of injera that we couldn't eat the rest of food. After we failed to get the servers attention after he walked by at least 10 times, we decided that we would not be doing any further ordering and would be leaving with out finishing the food on the plate. My guest did attempt to tell the server, but the server didn't take interest in what we were trying to say. We left and WILL NOT be going back! read more

The cook came out to ask me if it was fine to substitute a cut of beef for a dish as she had run out. Was fine with it and the flavor of the dishes was superb. She even gave me another dish on the house for the trouble. I wouldn't recommend the coffee, very small. read more

This place has a lot going for it with a nice atmosphere and woodwork decor. Some of the best injera in Portland and the food is good but generally rather dry and not a good example of excellent saucy Ethiopian cuisine. If you are a party of one or two you will have a small table that cannot even hold two plates - duh! The place is popular and as a result the service is very slow. You'll be grabbing the server as he walks by to beg for your first drink or to order an appetizer etc. They are a bit expensive because meat dishes come with no sides and if you like lentils or veggies too you will be looking at a $25 order before drinks. Enat's has em beat in every way except atmosphere. We'll try Abyssinian again sometime after they get settled in. read more

I don't venture out too often to try new types of food but this Ethiopian food, service and atmosphere was AMAZING! Such an inviting and friendly place! We had the coffee and the whole experience was so fun!!! For a brand new restaurant this is definitely worth checking out!
