Great food. Great quality ingredients and every dish I have ordered has been very good. The wait staff is hit or miss. If you get "lucky" and are not stuck with the ONE younger male server, you probably will get decent to really good service. I've eaten here many times over the years. The menu is fairly routine yet the food is top notch. My visit this past weekend put me over the edge. I ordered the Mahi mahi Special. This was the best Mahi mahi dish I have ever eaten. It was seared perfectly and came with a big pile of portobello mushrooms and some sauteed vegetables. I don't know how they came up with this trio but it was MAGNIFICENT. They change the specials every month or so, which means I will be going back in a few days to get me more of this. I think the food is better than the old Acapulco. We had the chili colorado, the beef was so tender and the sauce was thick and rich. Chips and salsa were tasty. The best thing about the Acapulco is the staff, they are so friendly and welcoming. Try it you'll like it. !!! read more

Alcapulco is a wonderful place for dinner. The specials are usually outstanding, and the standard fare is VERY good. Tonight we had the cerviche, which was some of the best we've had. I guess I made the mistake of not completely reading the reviews online before I came here to try it out. I decided to come here after looking at the online menu and at the pictures of the food but I didn't realize that there was new ownership or how that would compromise the food I was expecting. Based on the reviews I read--it totally did and apparently this is not the place I was expecting AT ALL. The drinks here for happy hour and the appetizers that come with the happy hour time are OK but the food is lacking spice and flavor some salt would go along way as well as adding some heat to the salsa. Maybe some more onion, garlic, and cilantro would help. I honestly get better food from my local taqueria that cost about 1/4 of what I spent here to "try" to give this place a chance. I won't be coming back any time soon but maybe in the future for a few drinks JUST NOT THE FOOD. I really hope the new owners take into consideration that their menu needs to be changed for added flavor because it's lacking and how to bring back quality to make it worth every single penny. We went on an early Sunday afternoon. They were serving brunch and lunch. It definitely isn't the old Acapulco if you're expecting the same recipes. The restaurant was very empty. Only one booth was filled. The hostess tried to seat us right next to that booth...which was still dirty and someone rushed in front of her to start wiping the table. She took us to another booth directly across the kitchen! I'm not sure why you would do that when there are so many open spaces. FOOD: We had a two ground beef taco combo and carnitas. The tacos were tasty. The rice, beans (pinto, refried), carnitas all cooked perfectly except NOTHING had taste. I saw another review that the food was oversalted. I think they have now gone the other direction with the seasoning. Everything was piping hot. The flour tortillas were too hot to even handle. Just NO taste. CLEANLINESS: The booth we sat in was clean. The one (big) issue I saw was a waitress cleaning off the condiments at every table with a towel that was once white, but now dark. Then I saw her take our plates from the cook's high counter using that same towel to carry the plates and move them to a lower counter. I assume she added the parsley or something on top of the plates because she was not the one to bring us our plates. Our original waiter was the one who carried the plates to our table. But I could see her do this because, remember, we were seated across from the kitchen. TO GO: Our waiter later asked if we were done and started to clear our table. My plate was 3/4 full and I had to ask for it To Go (I fed the dog the carnitas). So he brought me a To Go container to fill. If you want your leftovers, let them know upfront or you won't get that food back. For some reason he took the tortillas away when he brought me the To Go container so I guess you don't get to take tortilla leftovers with you?? PRICING: Reasonable at around $11/person. Chicken, beef, pork can be extra depending on the dish. They don't skimp on the portion size so you can get your money's worth. OVERALL: The staff is very friendly. They still have service issues to work out I think. Yes, you can always add salt to a dish, but if your rice, beans and meat have no flavor, but are cooked as they should be, that's a chef's seasoning issue and not a personal preference. Everyone in the group thought the same; decent but ultimately just ok. I was looking for good places to eat now that I've moved back to Alameda. I asked one of my UBER customers and she suggested the fish tacos at ACAPULCO. While I understand that I'll never know for sure unless I try a p k ace my self...I wish I had read Yelp first and stayed away. 1) Bartender asked at least 3 times what I would like to drink...the answer was always lemonade. 2) The first basket of chips was cold, and they don't seem to be freshly made. (2nd basket was warm, which helped a lot) 3) Guacamole was made from avocados that weren't ripe, there just was no flavor...and there were large chunks that were still hard. 4) Fish tacos looked great, but there was no crunch...it all felt soft. It's nowhere near being as good as it was when the Quintero family owned it, but it's a good option if you want Mexican food and the rest of your options on the island are too crowded (i.e. La Penca). It's been years since I've been to Acapulco and had dinner here last weekend, encouraged by friends' rave reviews. The place is quite spruced up from what I remember. The specials menu was recommended and it had my favorite Mexican dish, Chile en Nogada. This was a nicely baked poblano chile stuffed with cinnamon/nutmeg spiced ground meat, topped with a creamy walnut sauce and pomegranate seeds. I was in heaven. Will go back but probably won't be able to try anything else until pomegranate season is over because I love this dish so much. read more

we tried this place when we first moved to Alameda, never got to try the food because the servers and Hostess had such a bad attitude we left. Once we discovered that Mike of Paradiso also owned this restaurant we decided to give it a second try. We met Bill the mgr, and we met Diana the bartender, and another middle aged server. We had amuch improved visit that time and went back a few more times, If Bill or Diana were there, it was really good if notis was back to being a mediocre restaurant. The food is inconsistent and the service is spotty at best without Bill in attendance, and If Diana is not bartending the drinks are awful (Juan). This lack of consistency will probably kill this restaurant by slow death but the attitude of some employees will surely speed that death up. Elsie, the sometimes hostess is the worst kind of person to have in a service industry, sloppy work, poor attitude, sits on her phone texting or something, never looks up and probably hasn't smiled (genuinely for years). I don't know whose relative she is but they would be doing her a favor by getting her away from people ASAP. I want to warn Bill and Mike, this kind of attitude will destroy your business no matter how much upgrading you do. Her reputation precedes her and we are not the only ones who try and go in, but turn around when we see her but not Bill. read more

We were in town visiting. I took family that was visiting from out of town, too. I was not impressed. The refried beans were bland. The Mexican rice was dry and undercooked, with no flavor, either. The carnitas were terrible-dry, flavorless and tough. Tortillas were not house-made and disappointing. My uncle's chile relleno was tough and overly sauced, but even that didn't improve the flavor. My partner and I found this place at the last minute on Valentine's Day and had a solid experience. The interior is very pretty, with traditional Mexican decor and tiles. We each ordered the two item combo plates and each got a drink, which was very affordable. The enchiladas and chile relleno were very flavorful and filling, and the sides of beans, rice and chips were also very tasty. I don't ever write negative reviews. I also want to point out I really like this place and their food and I thought my waiters have always been great. I'm strictly writing this because of one stupid, thoughtless interaction with a female worker who was otherwise nice to me the whole time until I was leaving. My 8-month-old baby had a diaper to change (not even #2) so no big mess. I went to both bathrooms and see there's no changing tables. I'm not going to change him on the dirty bathroom floor even with the mat I have. It's common sense--you exist in Alameda as a sit-down restaurant where lots of families come with kids in diapers. Put in a changing table. However, the kicker to this is that there's a hidden booth seat (not with a table) near the front out of sight in a corner so I thought this must be the best option. I also mentioned to my nice waiter "I'm changing a diaper but looks like it's not possible in the bathroom so I'll go there (to this corner)" and he nodded in approval. While I'm there, this woman working behind the bar (tall with blonde hair and glasses) comes up to my buddy and says "he cannot do that in the middle of the restaurant" (in what he recalled as a very blunt, rude, and aggressive tone). Then, as I'm leaving, she passively aggressively says "next time in the car" and doesn't say anything else like "thank you." Seriously, I had to restrain myself from putting the dirty diaper on the bar, giving her a few choice words, and leaving without tipping. I tipped the waiter anyways (not his fault) and said nothing. I would say whoever you are--learn some empathy and recognize you're the one forcing me into a bad situation. What's worse is that you could've simply said "hey sorry guys do you mind if we have you do this elsewhere and I apologize we don't have changing tables in the bathroom." I don't know why you'd want to make an enemy and I'm an easy-going person who lets a lot slide even when you're rude but this was just utterly stupid and thoughtless. read more

We tried this a couple of times and just can't love it. I know some people really like it but it just seems bland and boring to me. Nothing special or interesting about it at all. Standard Americanized Mexican. Service was adequate but indifferent. House margaritas were definitely not made with fresh lime juice (more likely bottled or a mix). "Mole" sauce tasted mostly of tomato with no discernible chili or chocolate notes. Even the salsa is mostly tomato with very little heat. It's fine for lunch if you happen to be in the neighborhood but I wouldn't drive across the island to go there. read more
