Eh. Definitely a dicey place so hopes were high. Nobody here at 2pm. Rather unfriendly guy took order and slapped some already cut gyros meat on the grill. Disappointed that it was not cut fresh off the spot but I gather that they don't do enough business to keep the spits at full warming capacity. Not best gyro I've had but not bad. We ordered based on all the great reviews. We were told our order of 2 gyros and 1 side of green beans would be ready in 20 - 30 minutes. Instead, it took 11/2 hours. Still don't know why we waited, others came and left. Was expecting the restaurant to be clean, it wasn't. The AC either doesn't work or wasn't turned on. The restaurant was cluttered, dirty, hot, and sticky. Green beans were awful, threw them away. The gyros were ok, not good enough to go back. First and last time for this place. read more

The restaurant itself doesn't look like much, but the food is terrific. My shish kebab was tasty and filling, with enough to take away. Of all the places I ate at on a recent trip to Indy, this place stood out in my mind the most. Not because it's the best food, but because they're able to keep going in an area that's a challenge to find if you don't know the area and seems distant from everything else. The gyro and fries were just okay. That's too bad, because I really wanted to love this place. It's the epitome of a hole in the wall. Unfortunately, the food was just average, at best. I had a realization about hole in the wall places when I was here. If the food isn't delicious, some of the things that make a place a hole in the wall start to go towards the side of unappealing versus being part of the charm of a place. I LOVE ADEL'S! I love Adel the man too! He's a very warm & personable man who remembers you from your last visit (even if it was months ago). Now for the food: The spicy gyro is fabulous! I've tried gyros at other Greek restaurants but they were either too spicy or not spicy enough. Warning: the portions are HUGE! I usually end up taking home at least half the meat & it's even delicious cold. The shwarma & spanakopita are also great choices. The falafel is next on my list but I usually get the gyro. The hummus is really good as well. My husband likes the spicy hummus but I prefer the regular. His tzatziki sauce is pretty good & I don't usually like tzatziki sauce. This is definitely a "hole-in-the-wall" kind of restaurant but it's well worth the stop. There are usually a lot of people getting to-go orders during lunch so be patient. Many times Adel is working alone. If you're lucky maybe he'll throw in some baklava at no extra charge...I've seen it many times over the years. read more

Indianapolis needs more locally owned places like this. The staff is really friendly and the food is good. Adel's is a take-out/order at the counter & sit down place. I have had the gyros and they are very good. The spicy lamb is my favorite. The cucumber and tomato were very fresh and the sauce is awesome. It was also a nice touch that the owner showed me my order before he closed the container. He is very proud of what he is serving. They also have some Mediterranean grocery items and spices for purchase. If you want a quick, fresh bite, this is a great place. If you are looking for more of a sit-down, full service Greek place, drive a couple miles south and eat at Hella's Cafe (82nd & Westfield Boulevard) I am really happy to have Adel's in the neighborhood. Let's get serious about gyros, shall we? This place is fantastic! I was in Carmel with my dad and we were looking for a lunch spot. My one request? No chains- something locally owned. I whipped out my phone and checked the Yelp app and found Adel's Gyros. A greek gyro house with 5 stars? Count me in! I'm convinced that hole in the wall ethnic places have THE best food, and this place is no exception. It doesn't look like much from the outside, but don't let that deceive you. Once you taste the food you'll become an Adel's fan immediately. You order at the counter and they bring your food out to you in styrofoam to-go boxes, even if you're dining in. I get the feeling that most people get carry-out from this place because the decorations are minimal and there aren't a lot of places to sit. They also have plastic silverware and styrofoam cups. That's one of the reasons for the 4 stars. I'd love to see them offer up a greener options, like plates and cups that can be washed and reused rather than something you're going to throw away after one use. We ordered from Adel himself who told us about his family while perused the menu. I had the chicken kebab and my dad went for the gyro. Do yourself a favor and get the gyro. A generous portion at a great price. $5.99 for a heaping portion of gyro meat over a warm pita with a salad? My pocketbook thanks you Adel! The chicken kebab wasn't the best I've ever had, but I'd come back again (and again...) for the gyro. Yum! Another reason for the 4 stars instead of 5 was the wait time. You can't rush perfection (which the gyro was) but we were waiting quite a while (maybe 10 minutes?) for our lunch. At a place like this, the wait seemed a bit excessive seeing as the place wasn't crazy busy. The decor was sparse, and there was unplugged equipment (think freezers and serving buffets) just lining the walls. Immediately when we walked in we were greeted like old friends, even though we'd never been before! The atmosphere is lacking, but the warm welcome made up for it and we decided to eat in. I got a regular gyro and my husband got the spicy. It was spicy but it was a good added flavor. The portion size is large, we both took home half of our orders. As we were enjoying our gyros, the owner brought out two large pieces of baklava for us! It was a lovely surprise! Like other reviews have said, if you are coming for the decor you will not be impressed. On that note, if you are coming for the food then this is the place to be. An overflowing gyro was more than enough for lunch and provided some small leftovers to enjoy later. What stands out to me is the friendliness of the staff and the relationships they have seemed to build with their regular customers. The gyros are very good, but the cleanliness was questionable. I didn't see any gloves during prep and witnessed a unsheathed lettuce grab for a Greek salad. Shrugged it off since I had already paid and had been waiting 30 mins. Took a trip to the bathroom in the back of the store....holy mother of God - just don't go in there. After another 30 mins of waiting, as he was the only person during a genuine lunch rush, I received my gyro and a free dessert for the wait. Adel is kind, his food is good, but he needs help. This is a little gem on North College near Carmel and worth the drive. They aren't big on decor but the flavor will more than make up for that. And the portions are tremendous.... So take your appetite or have a snack for later. read more

Looking for a place for lunch because we had some time to kill before my husbands eye Dr. appointment. We both love Gyros and haven't had one since moving out of Indy. We were regulars at a place called Yummy's on the Eastside. You must try Adel's! The portions are large, very flavorful, fresh and delicious. Best gyros hands down. I had the non spicy traditional gyro. Hubs had the same and added fries. I don't know what they do to the fries, but they are outstanding. We were given free desserts after we sat down. I have no idea where Adel's has been all my life! Apparently just down the street from us! I had no idea they were so close to where we live. We don't often go down College Ave and have been really missing out. I am sad thinking about all the time we could have been eating yummy amazing hot gyros! I first discovered this hidden gem Yelp's Top Indy restaurants, but still took awhile to get there for some reason. Honestly I could easily see how people drive right by since it's not much from the street. It's next to Rosie's Nursery and they do have their own parking lot with spaces in front. Even walking in you still wouldn't think much, but it's very clean and has a good amount of seating. We both opted for gyros and added fries and a drink. Our food was made fresh right in front of us. I am pretty sure that this was the best gyro I have ever had. I thought about it every day for weeks and finally made it back for a 2nd visit after the holidays and am still very much pleased with Adele's and the amazing gyro. Recently I was browsing through Yelp for lunch suggestions and I found Adel's. WOW, I'm glad I did! They have the absolute best gyro I've ever eaten. The tzatziki sauce was cool and creamy with surprisingly delightful chunks of fresh cucumber. The spicy lamb was magnificent and came piled high on a warm, soft pita. I've never had a spicy gyro before but now I don't think I'll ever be able to enjoy it any other way. This is my new favorite lunch spot. It's a true hidden gem and PERFECT to satisfy a gyro craving. The shawarma looked and smelled wonderful so I may be trying that on my next visit. This establishment is more akin to a diner than a traditional restaurant. You place your order at a walk-up counter. There is no hosted seating or wait staff. The decor and ambiance are what you would expect from a carry-out joint. Basically...may not be very impressive to bring a first date, but you come to Adel's for the food...not the scenery. If you come expecting a fabulous quick-service Greek meal you will NOT be disappointed. if you're expecting to be immersed in Greek culture you may want to look elsewhere...but you'll miss out on the best gyro you've ever had. read more

Man...I hate to be the guy that gives the bad review, but I guess it adds some diversity. Let me say this. Adel, the owner, seemed like a very generous, kind man. And, I believe that's a good reason why people go back here. But, he was severely understaffed. And, by understaffed I mean he was the only one working. I went in on a Friday night around 630-7, and he got slammed. It took about 30 minutes just for a to-go gyro. The second negative, and this is what is bringing my rating so low, was the cleanliness of the restaurant. Chairs were everywhere, the floors were gross, and the kitchen wasn't pretty. I very much appreciate the classic hole-in-the-wall restaurant. But, this felt like too much. Or, too little, depending on how you look at it. Basically, It took me out of the mood to eat it. I did eat it though, and I must say, it was pretty good. It was above average. But, it goes to show what presentation can do sometimes. This easily could have been a 3.5-4 star rating if it wasn't for those two things. I hope he gets some help and keeps things going because it seems like a lot of people love it. read more

On my second trip here, I had the gyros sandwich - spicy. It is by far the best gyros one can get in the Indianapolis-Carmel metro area. Highly recommended. On my first trip about a year ago, I had the falafel and hummus, also spicy, which were both delicious, though not the best I've had (coming from a Jewish family, our homemade is hard to beat!). I would definitely say that the ambience and overall look of the restaurant is run down, but I think this might benefit it due to the low prices, quick and friendly service and traditional look of a Greek dive restaurant (there are Greek flags and Greek heritage photos throughout the store). My only problem is that I felt the store might not be clean due to the fact that it is indeed run down. 4 stars. read more

Great hole in the wall!! Ordered the spicy gyro with fries. Bold flavored and fresh!! I was shocked how good it was. Had my fair share of great Greek foods across the country. I have to say it's top 3. Can't review other dishes, but if your a fan of spicy gyro. Come here! Portions of meat were incredible. I have to eat off some meat before picking up the gyro! The food is incredible! Don't be turned off by the decor... give the food a try. I would recommend ordering your food and taking it to go. I got a gyro and it was so much food it took me two days to finish it. The meat, which can be ordered spicy or regular... onion or no onion, is placed on flat bread and comes with a yogurt sauce, tomatoes, and lettuce on the side. What a great little place! Only basic tables and chairs. The room is a little plain looking and not much on the decor. The service was polite, and very quick. Our gyro sandwiches were wonderful! The hummus tasted very fresh, and the pita's were warned on the grill just perfectly. The menu has several curry options, and two desert choices. Let me say that when we first arrived at Adel's I was a little skeptical due to the overall aesthetics of the restaurant, but after I tasted the food, all my hesitations went away. I'm not a huge fan of lamb, but after my first bite I was sold. The spicy gyro was out of this world, and left my mouth watering for more. However, due to the humongous portion size, I could hardly eat the baklava piece they gave me. As I sit here writing this review, I could not be more pleased with the overall experience. Fantastic, Simplistic, Authentic. I can't imagine a better Gyro in Indiana. The meat was surprisingly flavorful, the onions seemed very fresh, the bread was slightly crispier than what I've had in other places (delicious). My only complaint is the location. It's pretty hard to get out of the parking lot at 4:00 pm with tons of traffic passing by. read more
