The effort of recovering the data ended up being very challenging and took longer than any of us expected, but at the end Five Star was able to recover over 99% of the files--and I'm happy to say, the 1% of files were not important to me, so the 99% they recovered covered everything I needed. Despite that significant extra work, they invoiced me only for the original quoted amount. I'm happy with the results but also the professionalism. I was unable to recover data from them in different ways. Disc one was an external drive that would not power on. I tried removing it from its external enclosure and powering it from another, more different enclosure to no avail. The system was indeed down. Disc two was an internal drive that used to be my C drive- my boot drive. I removed it from an old computer after it stopped booting and put it into an external enclosure. Several different computers (Mac & PC) would recognize it sporadically, though none could access the data on it- error codes always came up. Before I removed it, from the old computer, I tried booting from an optical disc and other assorted methods, many other assorted methods... I believe I was very thorough in my efforts. I sent both in and received near 100% recovery. They said it was 100% from one and 99.9% from the other but I am unable to find that .1%. I got all of this for just barely above the $300 price in their name (each, not total). So for about $600 total (including new discs on which my recovered data was transferred and return shipping) I got this incredible service. The total price I paid for both discs at 300DDR is less than I was quoted at several other places for one disc. At each step they were great communicators, from their receipt of the discs to my receipt of the recovered data. And worse it was the one that held all my photos over the last couple of years. I'm an engineer by trade and with other files, I might have tried to rescue them myself. For these important photos, however, I decided to go with the professionals. I did a bunch of research trying to find the best data recovery service to use and $300 Data Recovery turned out on top. The employees here are very professional and responsive. I submitted my chances form at 7:30PM on a Saturday and they got back to me within an hour. I was not expecting a response over the weekend. They gave very clear instructions on how to package and send off my SSD. I dropped it off at UPS the next day and by Wednesday, they confirmed they received the device and added me to the queue. Apparently there weren't too many people in line before me so I received a positive response the very next day. 100% of sectors recovered! A couple of days later they were completely done and after I confirmed they recovered my files (they send a master list of all files) and I paid ($300 fee + $105 recovery transfer drive + $25 shipping), they shipped my drive back. Also, there is a bright spot on my phone on the right side, which affects my wallpaper. I came into this place to have it checked out and see how much it would cost to repair. The tech took one look at the photo and said it's not the screen that's damaged. It's the photo is highlighting a glare in the background. He switched it to night mode, and the glare was gone, so it was clearly the photo I had as a background and not the screen itself. Also, I asked him about the streaks of light on my photos. He took one look at it and said that my lens cover is really dusty. He cleaned it off and we took a photo and all the streaks were gone. I wanna point this out because these are two things that any dishonest repair shop can easily say they will look at it and fix it and charge me $100-$200. Because of their honesty, this was a five minute visit where he did want adjustment and one lens cleaning and didn't even charge me. It's good to know that they are still honest repairman out there. I'm pretty technical, and the owner of a now-failed 1T, 4 drive RAID array. (2 of 4 drive heads…read morefailed simultaneously.) I tried the obvious things, and realized I was looking at a true hardware failure this time, not just software. Worse, 2 of the 4 drive heads failed, which, in a RAID5 array, often means that some or all of your files are kaput. After trying one other vendor and having it sit there for a day with no calls back, I picked the drive from that vendor and drove down to the drop-off office of Secure Data Recovery on Interurban. Note that this is just a drop-off office. I dropped off the drive at the Interurban Avenue office and it was FedEx'ed to the Secure Data Recovery Services Lab. The idea of a centralized lab, which many of these data recovery vendors seems to use, is a bit jarring at first. Basically, you show up at shared office suites (usually Regus, or something similar), you talk to a friendly but faceless account manager over the phone, you get the basic overview of the process, you get assigned a customer number, and you leave it there while they ship it off. In theory, the other vendor works this way as well, except the phone number had no person there, and no one called back after a day. This is the way it works with Secure Data Recovery Services too, except the phone number actually works and has a real human being there, who in my case was very knowledgeable, confident and reassuring. I got the customer number he assigned, gave a credit card for the deposit, handed off my drive, and waited a few days. I got the promised email with the diagnosis, detailing what was wrong with my drive -- in my case, two drive heads had failed simultaneously. They literally had to take apart the drive, reimage the underlying plates, re-splice the RAID (5) array together again, and they then sent me a list of all the files and file sizes that they were able to recover. In my case, it appears that all files -- or nearly all files may be returned to me. Am awaiting the recovered Terabyte drive (on a new drive) shipped back to me. It's pricey -- mine cost about $5,000 -- but it'll be well worth it if the data is indeed recovered, and I don't think it's unreasonable given the severity of the problem I encountered, which necessitated a full teardown and careful re-imaging of two drives. At press time, I was able to see the full and correct directory files, file sizes, and am awaiting the drive to be Fedex'ed back to me. These guys are knowledgeable, they give clear feedback throughout the process, they're reachable, and they inspire confidence that they actually know what they're doing. I'll revise this review if the data somehow comes back different than as they related in their top-line file report, but I've actually gotten a pretty good feeling that this will work out well, and can recommend them based on the process so far.
