Ok, so I read the other reviews of Advantage Rent A Car at Chicago O'Hare and was feeling very nervous about renting a car from them. I was traveling to Chicago/Indiana for a funeral and didn't want any additional complications, but . . . the other "name brand" rental agencies were all charging $350-$400 for a 4-day rental, and I was lured by the $156 total at Advantage that I was seeing on all the travel websites. So I decided to take a chance and book directly on the Advantage website, and after joining their frequent renter program, I received a one-class upgrade on my rental.
O'Hare is putting in train service to the new rental car facility, but it was not yet operational at the time of my trip, so upon arrival to O'Hare, I collected my bag and headed to ground transportation. As another recent reviewer said, I found the generic shuttle (you don't have to wait or look for a specific rental company shuttle) leading to the entire car rental facility for all on-airport brands which I found very easy and convenient. I went to the Advantage counter where I was greeted by exactly zero line. I walked right up and was immediately assisted by a friendly young man who seemed a bit taken aback by all my seemingly overcautious inquiries. Admittedly, my online research and reading the multiple negative reviews of how other customers were "tricked" into renting here, but ended up paying significantly more money in fees, tolls, etc, had me quite nervous of what I might be walking into. But he managed to calm my nerves and reassured me my rate, was my rate. After declining all coverages and "extras" including toll pass, refueling, etc., and since I carry full coverage on my own vehicle and my credit card also provides extra coverage as well, I signed for the car and was instructed where to go. It was an easy walk and escalator ride up one level to the Advantage section of the rental garage. The section and stall number were well marked and I walked right to the car.
Now for the car. I was provided with a VW Passat with 55,000 miles on it. The control knob for the side mirrors was missing making it impossible to adjust the mirrors. Ok, whatever, I did get a pretty great rate. And, I could see the car was being well maintained with good tires and recent service stickers. I inspected the car and found a few bits of minor exterior damage, which I did take the time to mark on the pink slip and have signed by the attendant prior to leaving. I noticed that the gas tank was not completely full but wasn't too concerned about that and failed to say anything about it to the attendant. That was a mistake. I should have had her make a note about that too.
I began my trek to Indiana starting with the toll road. Based on all the negative reviews stemming from "surprise" toll charges, I decided to decline the toll pass offered at rental, and instead go through the cash pay lanes at each toll. There are four toll stations between Chicago and the Indiana Toll Road. I paid very careful attention to ensure I didn't miss any toll exits and accidentally go through the EasyToll lanes which would then trigger unpaid license plate toll charges to my account. Each of the four toll stations cost $1.50, so I paid $6.00 in cash tolls on each leg of my journey, for a total of $12.00. A much better deal than the $12.99 per day I was offered at time of rental. At each toll station, I colleced a receipt so that I would later be able to prove that I paid each toll in cash. I am keeping those toll receipts indefinitely, in case of any future monkey business with my credit card, but at this point, I don't expect to need them.
The car performed well and we had no problems with it despite the minor inconvieniences noted above. Wish the headrests were removable, they were terribly uncomfortable for the 500 miles of driving I did over four days. But that is a "me" issue, not the rental company's fault.
Upon return to Chicago, I filled up the gas tank at the next-to-last Oasis off the toll road which was about 20 miles from the airport. Returned the car with exactly the same amount of gas it had started with. Upon return, the attendant did say they would have to charge me for the "missing" fuel, but I explained that it had the exact same amount as when I rented the car, and she waived the charge for me even though I couldn't "prove" it.
After closing out the rental, I received an email receipt for the car and it was the exact amount to the penny as quoted to me at time of booking and rental.
Overall, I was very pleased with this rental experience. I had anticipated a terrible experience to save $200-$250 but was really pleasantly surprised. Not perfect, but adequate, got me to the funeral and back and saved a lot of money. Not any real complaints in light of the savings. I will update this review should anything change, but if it doesn't, I'll be renting again from Advantage if and when the need arises. read more
