I hate to downgrade a business. But our house has never felt properly cool for eight years. Affordable Hearing and Air put in a new HVAC system in our home eight years ago. We would have them come out to do yearly maintenance and someone would literally come and hose down the AC for $85... then we complained about how hot it was, and a tech would look at our thermostat and say it was tracking correctly. The thermostat was right where the home is coldest... They did replace a capacitor under warranty on our AC when it flunked out in summer 2022 and they came quickly. Last year I called to have them clean our AC and it was a two week wait. I decided to just do it myself with my Dad throwing a hose up to the roof. This year we had a recommendation for another company from our electrician and the owner came out, did an overall check, cleaned off the unit from pollen and buildup (with a hose) and said our coolant was extremely low. He said we either had a slow leak; he's coming back in several weeks to see how our coolant level is in case it is a faster leak. With the refilled coolant Our house finally feels cool for the first time in eight years. And we do have a cooling differential upstairs- a full ten degrees hotter than downstairs. I tested it with my own thermometer. We definitely felt gaslit for what we went through with the advice we received from Affordable. We are also planning to get a mini split system installed in a bedroom upstairs as our new HVAC guy said a house with two stories should generally have two air conditioners or mini splits installed upstairs as it's difficult for one unit to push up enough cool air especially with out triple digit summers and a flat roof house with no attic. The topper was he said our AC wiring setup on the roof was not up to code. He was shocked it was approved by the city inspector (which it was). I can't go lower on my ratings because the owner was helpful When we first moved here, and I think the crawl space install was very challenging and a very good father and son team did a good job. Joe also helped us when we had a house fire and was able to sent a team to mechanically clean our vents without chemicals per my request. He also worked graciously with invoices for the insurance company. However, I think there are some less talented technicians working here now that are not sufficiently experienced or knowledgeable who are bringing this company down, and thus I do need to revise my review. read more

I thought I was calling a local HVAC company on a Saturday because our heater decided not to work today. I, in fact, called Affordable instead. Joe answered the phone and I started telling him my problem, saying I wasn't a customer but wondered if I could get on the list for a service call in the upcoming week. Joe than asked my name and where I lived. When I told him Rough and Ready by Grass Valley, he said they don't go out that far. That's when I realized I probably wasn't talking to a local company. At any rate, Joe gave me some tips on things I could try to see if I could get the unit to start working. I really appreciated that in light of the fact that he was not going to get my business. I had been utilizing this company bi-annually for a few years now and never had any issues. We were always happy with their maintenance services on all fronts. They were responsive, available, reliable competent and affordable. On 5/22/24 our air conditioner wouldn't turn on. There was not a second thought in my mind, I dialed up Affordable Heating and Air, whom I trusted and been stead fast loyal to. It has always been very important to me to support smaller businesses within my community whenever I can. The temperatures had started to climb here in Sacramento so I wasn't to surprised when we were told that the soonest appointment for a diagnostic was going to be 6/3/24, almost two weeks away. We bought an extra fan and swamp cooler, filled our extra freezer w/ ice and marked our calendar! It was a rough 12 days, even though I knew we could likely get a sooner appointment with a larger company or even just shopping around, it wasn't an option for us. We were going to stay loyal to Affordable Heating and Air. 6/3/24 finally arrived and we were told that we had two choices, a massive repair for 2-3K or we could install a new unit for 5-6K. The Tech stated that he would need to get back to us in a "couple days" with the official quote. By the end of Wednesday we still had not heard back from anyone so I called and left a voice message, just asking for an update. By days end on Thursday, there was no word so I called back a second time and asked for a call back. It wasn't until I left a message at the end of the week stating I wanted a refund for the servicing and quote (which we still had not recevied) that I finally got a call back. We had a written quote (for double what we were told) by the end of the day but the whole experience had soured our relationship and we ended up deciding to go with a lovely local company who provided stellar 5 star service from start to finish. When a return customer cannot get a call back for a already paid service...that's not a business I want to be working with. read more

Our ac/ heating unit had stopped working all of a sudden. I called in the next morning to ask if anyone could come by to take a look and the secretary immediately found a time range they could come. Within that time the serviceperson came out and got to work. They did the diagnostics and found a blown fuse box. Within the hour they fixed it, our ac/heater was working again. Although this may have been as easy fix, we appreciated the efficiency, the no extra selling points approach that the company had. They weren't trying to convince me of extra things. For diagnostic it is alone $59, if you end up getting a repair the fee is removed and you only pay for the repair. For the supplies and work mine came in a little under $200. Definitely recommend! Appreciate a no hassle approach especially when we're working from home now adays! read more

Five big stars No need to search or compare companies. Choose these guys. Local, experienced and expert. We called Affordable HAC after a fiasco of mis diagnosis and waiting for weeks for our heater repair from another company. Affordable has a live person (Kevin) who answered the phone, and scheduled service practically immediately. Our technician was punctual, proactive and clearly an experienced (expert) guy who diagnosed our issue properly. He was honest and said the part could be replaced but gave us options. He explained that replacement might be our best option due to age of unit. No pressure. They went above and beyond and inspected ducts and connections, sealed things. We had an HVAC system installed in a couple days (2 days before Christmas.) The installers were different from our first technician and they were all great (detail oriented, hard working and experienced. ) They cared! They handled the rebate ($3000) for us and are handling the inspections so things are done to code with a proper report. They took care of things I had no idea needed to be done. The owner was very helpful as it's Christmas time and we had no heat. He got things rolling. His team knows what they're doing and got it done. Im impressed and happy to say there are really good people out there that are skilled ,service and detail oriented. I randomly Google searched local heating and air companies and called them. I bought a place and we noticed the HVAC was in poor condition and requested the seller pay to have a company come out and clean it and give it an inspection. So I called AFFORDABLE HEATING & AIR, my air conditioner broke down when the first heat wave struck. I called a few places and decided to go with AFFORDABLE.... $69 to diagnose the problem, this amount will be added to the price of repair... This person arrived, I had a hard time understanding him, nonetheless, I referred him to the AC unit. He checked, seconds later he replaced the capacitor..... and gave me a bill for $220!!! I googled "capacitor " & realized that this capacitor ranges from $6.95 to $30. To charge me $220 for a $20-$30 capacitor and the job was done in a few seconds in & out, to me is OUTRAGEOUS. He actually makes MORE per hour than an ATTORNEY. Not to mention even if gas was $5.60 at the time since the distance from my house to North Highlands is about 6 miles!!! What a rip off. This company has put in a NEW system (Jan 2021) including " sealing existing ducting" per invoice . I purchased the home June 2021 and the outside system was making a horrible noise. They gave me such a hard time with even making the appointment because I was not the 'original" owner telling me it was not under warranty. Finally after arguing and escalating it to the Owner, come to find out it was still under warranty, they came out and fixed the problem. Not even 2 months later the system was not cooling, they came out again and said the ducting was not sealed in a certain area and pretty much blamed it on the age of the system. Well, on the receipts the seller had given me it said "sealed the existing ducting" It was not on the warranty so it was a out of pocket expense. Ken did a fine job of inspecting & repairing my wall a/c unit. Supervisor Joe (over the phone) had advised me that they don't usually work on them because repair can be more than replacement cost. They did accommodate me however when I told them that it had had very little use. I initially called just before I left on a trip so all-in-all I had several contacts. Every interaction was a first rate experience, with receptionist Mary, supervisor Joe, repairman Ken and another whose name I don't recall. Expert advice, clear explanations, courtesy, prompt return of calls, called ahead as they said they would, on time, satisfactory repair, and reasonable price. We have used these guys for a couple years. When our compressor went out they helped us get a new one threw the warranty service even tho we initially had not bought the unit from them. Had this company perform my HVAC inspection when I bought my home. What a joke. Although the guy said everything was great, I've come to learn that the HVAC unit itself is all but dead, the ductwork is not up to code (laying on the ground, not strapped in anywhere), there are many areas where the ducts are detached or they're pinched through small spaces (stopping a reliable airflow), and there is no air to many parts of the house. Would've been nice to have this information pointed out to me during the home inspection. Would've saved me a ton of money. read more

Here's what's bad and here's what's good.... The bad: Its bad when your AC goes out in the middle of a Sacramento summer. Its bad when your furnace and condenser are so old its a crap shoot to try to fix them so ya might as well get quotes from some different contractors out of Yelp and replace everything. It's bad when the closest contractor to your house says he's a month out on scheduling work. It was shaping up to be a sweaty August but now the good: It's good that Matt with Affordable H&A showed up the next morning. It's good that Affordable's quote was thousands less than the other two quotes I received. Its good that they pushed their install up a day so my wait time was just a couple days in the hot Sacramento summer. And best of all its good to recommend Affordable Heating and Air. My contractor referred me to Affordable Heating and Air about 6 months ago and I have been grateful ever since. I have used many heating and air companies in the past and they have all done decent jobs but I never felt confident about pricing and quality of work. I was fortunate to deal with the owner Joe and I knew immediately he was honest and really knows his s*** about the business. I have used them at a few of my rentals and just recently called them for my own residence. As far as pricing, they are not the cheapest but are definitely reasonable. I would like to respond to Joe's response. "We do our very best to provide everyone with the best service and technical expertise possible and sorry that your experience wasn't to your satisfaction. This matter went before the BBB per your request for arbitration and a refund and was dropped by them once they learned of the facts. We have an A+ rating with the BBB and for good reason." First of all, the artitration never took place because Affordable Heating and Air didn't accept the arbitration. He lied in his reponse. 2ndly, if you read my review, you will know why they chose not to do so. I am still working with BBB to find a way to resolve this. The only reason I was given was that some of the repair work was done through a management company, not with me directly. I had purchased a groupon to have my HVAC serviced and booked my appt a week in advance. 6min before my early morning appt Katrina called and said that they would need to move my appt back. I had originally asked for a later appt but was told 8:30am was the ONLY time they were available. I waited to see if the service person would show up a little later. No one showed up so I called around 10am and was told(quite rudely I might add) that because I didn't call sooner she had cancelled my appt completely! What?! I got a refund on my groupon and was left feeling disappointed that customer service could be so awful. The estimate was considerably lower than several others we'd gotten a few years earlier (and the final price was the same as the estimate.) We had the best experience with Joe Bertolucci. Our heater went out and we just had our baby with freezing temps outside. We called Joe and even though he was very busy, we became his priority and he rushed out to our house as quickly possible. I called to order a HVAC inspection for my client since the system was older and we needed to know the condition of all systems inside. I scheduled to inspection and the tech showed up on time and was friendly. He was not prepared and didn't bring the items requested to conduct the test/diagnosis. We asked him to take photos from his phone to show us what the inside and systems looked like as the system was on top of the roof. After 15-20 minutes he was at his truck writing his report, which took him longer to write than inspect the system. I had to ask him if he crawled in the attic and he said yes, though nobody ever saw him do so. The report was written so weak that my property inspector could have given us this same report, we hired Affordable Heating & Air to give us a thorough and comprehensive report. We figured he unit would need work and were planning to hire Affordable Heating & Air to repair and eventually replace the system when needed. Once we received the report which even lacked the property address, when a Realtor orders a real estate inspection report an address is always on the inspection. We contacted the office and the female was friendly stating she would check with the tech and get back to me. A short while later a male called me and told me "For $89.00 what do you expect? The service you want would cost a lot more". I was not given the chance to pay a higher fee to have a more thorough inspection and Affordable never tried to offer another service. The only redeeming quality is they refunded my client is $89.00. Complete waste of time and they were rude to my client and hung up on him. Totally unprofessional!! read more

Our air conditioning went out and we needed prices on a new compressor or to get a new more energy efficient system. We checked around a few places. Don't go to Alley and Son's they don't give you a free estimate and charged 50% more for a new compressor and about $5000 more for an entire new system. When I called Affordable Heating and Air, Ken came to our house right away and gave us all options. We decided to get a whole new air conditioning/heating system which would cut down our monthly bills and the price was great. Our old system which was over 10 years old kept on having problems and it was basically not efficient at all. We scheduled within a few days to have the new installation and they did it all in one day. It was great, no headaches and no problems. I highly recommend using Affordable Heating and Air. This company needs a serious overhaul, not only with the service department but management as well. My realtor researched to find a reputable heat and air in the area I'm purchasing a home for a full inspection of existing system and honestly Beutler would have done a better job. First I need to say I'm disabled, now retired from the HVAC field, and hold NATE certification as well as many others. When we set this up, I was very clear of the service I was needing and asked for senior tech and inspection camera to be used for inspection on heat exchanger. The current condition of system with no maintenance for over 10 years raises alot of concerns, and I was clear on exactly what I needed. Tech shows up, no camera, was not informed my wishes. I explained what I needed, tech agreed. 20 minutes go bye, hes at his truck ,writing what he called a full inspection. Never taking ANY readings of temperature, static pressure, motor and compressor amp draw..nothing, no pics to show me and part of the unit. What I got was system is in proper working order. Now theres no data plate so understanding he couldn't tell the age. But what I asked IS the standard for ANY reputable company to check. I did this on EVERY maintenance call when I worked. We called office to express my feelings and total unsatisfactory service I paid for. A manager returned my call to lecture me (first mistake), and then state we never asked for a thorough inspection. So everyone for $89. This company will come out, briefly visually look at your system and state it's good and be on there way. Not once trying to make things right, just argue with a CUSTOMER WHO IS HANDICAPPED and cant go look for himself, telling me I'm wrong. Never again will I or anyone I know use this company, COMPLETE hacks, no professionalism, or clearly and training on how a unit operates. I Always had enough time to safety and fully diagnose a system, so my customers knew where they stood. Guess companies like AFFORDABLE HEATING AND AIR dont need repeat business. Who in their right mind would go to a home and pull this crap. Will be calling the contractors licensing board and filing a formal complaint against this business. My AC went out the first day of triple digits last week, as did a bazillion other units, so getting an appointment with anyone was tough. I do have a home warranty that covers my system but I couldn't find the paperwork to call it in. Affordable Heating and Air were able to get me on the schedule for this week just in case I couldn't get an appointment through the home warranty program. Long story short, I was able to find their warranty paperwork on Saturday morning and when I opened a claim, they assured me that someone from G & M Mechanical would be calling me on the next business day. Not! I finally called the number that the warranty dispatcher had given me and the guy told me to text him my info so he could set up an appointment. Meanwhile, Casey from Affordable Heating and Air came out for THEIR scheduled appointment today (Tuesday, a week after losing AC) so I asked him to diagnose the problem and give me his best recommendations for improving the energy efficiency of my home, whether it be installing an attic fan, improving the duct work, or adding insulation. Casey found a burned out capacitor, which would cost $180.00 for parts and labor. When I decided to forgo that process and let the home warranty take care of it, he told me that part of the diagnostic process was installing a new, larger capacitor so that they could check coolant levels and other AC related things and it would be more trouble than it was worth to take it back out. He only charged me for the service call and wouldn't let me pay him for the part or labor! $68.00. Of course, they will probably be back to replace duct work and probably install an attic fan, but still. He was great and I can't recommend them highly enough. I will be hiring them to maintain and service the HVAC once all the recommended upgrades are finished. read more

I had them do some major work since Joe seemed very knowledgeable and trustworthy. Since then, they show up every six months to change filters and check all systems. At best, this service is unreliable. At worst, they are skirting the law. When my heating unit went out the week before Christmas, my landlord hired Joe at Affordable Heating and Air to install a new unit. To his credit, he got it in fast, even finding a crane to lift it over the fence. Since it was the holidays and cold as all get-out, he parked materials to re-do the duct work on my backyard deck and said he'd be back to finish the job. I told him there was no rush. That was in December. After a wild and wet winter, with fiberglass duct product flying about the back yard, I finally had the sodden mess taken to the dump in May. He then called around July asking me to take the day off to meet the inspector. He was surprised that the duct materials had been removed but made no effort to schedule a time to finish the work. The morning of the inspection he showed up to install required smoke alarms, but said he was really busy and asked me to get "that guy friend of yours" to put them up. When the unit failed inspection, it became clear to me why he didn't want to show up himself. After another season of huge heating and air conditioning bills because of decaying ducts (I could feel air conditioning blowing from the basement vents into the garden), I called the landlord to see if she could get Joe to finish the job. Joe gave me a cheery call and dropped by to "take a look." He said he'd call the landlord. Neither of us ever heard from him. Obviously, this is really the landlord's problem. However, I'm the one that's been paying the astronomical PG&E bills, so I'm stuck having to push resolution. If you've made it through the end of this review, take my advice: find a more qualified licensed contractor to do the job. read more

A few months ago I contracted their service through Groupon. My experience was not positive and the staff took advantage of the groupon and did not provide service. I left a negative Yelp to warn other customers of the experience. Since then, the owner Joe responded to my complaint and it was clear to me that my experience and his staff were NOT a good reflection of his business model or his personal desire to provide quality service to his customers.
