My husband and I live in Marin County and had been "jonesing" for Afghani food for quite some time. Frankly, we hadn't been to Helmand in the City since before Covid and our local spot in San Rafael closed years ago! So when a necessary trip to Hayward occurred soon after reading the restaurant review in the SF Chronicle, our long-neglected addiction was on its way to becoming truly well fed! Because we are older and freaked out by Omicron, Mohammed kindly set us up with a table outside. He so very kind and hospitable also in helping to make menu choices. But the most important things were the food and drink of course. We had mango lassis and the excellent herbed yogurt drink. For appetizers we enjoyed the naan with the eggplant dish with. As an entree we shared the moist delicious chicken kabob with rice, roasted tomato and onion. And for good measure we also ordered the beef palao and spicy beef dumpling. Needless to say, we had leftovers to bring home! Can't wait to have the opportunity to return! That darn addictive yummy stuff!! read more

I had a meeting in Concord Saturday night and as I was turning on Cowell Road I noticed this place on the corner. I decided if my meeting didn't take too long that I'd stop on the way back for dinner. Meeting finished early enough for dinner. Yay! The staff was friendly and welcoming. I couldn't make up my mind between the 3 different chai teas and asked about them. Mohammed was happy to explain the difference between them and make suggestions. For dinner I had the Borani Banjan and the Chopan Kabob. The chai was fragrant and delicious. Caffeine free too which is an added bonus The borani banjan, eggplant appetizer, was very tasty and great with the bread. I think the reason why some people don't like lamb is because it's under seasoned, overcooked, or worse, both. Here the chopan kabob, lamb, was seasoned and grilled to perfection. The accompanying rice was moist and fluffy. The side salad was refreshing and tart, an ideal addition to all of the flovors. I don't know what the restaurant was like a couple months ago but it's under new management with Mohammed and his brother. Thank you Mohammed for a lovely meal and conversation, and my compliments to your brother for the perfectly cooked lamb. I'm looking forward to next time! read more

It's been so long since I did a yelp review that I couldn't remember my account and had to create a new one just to support this restaurant. The staff was very nice and the food was very good. My wife and I both got the chicken/shami combo + some roasted onions and tomatoes on the side, and it looks exactly like the photos on the restaurants website. Portions were very generous and everything tasted amazing and freshly prepared. The staff was friendly and treated us really well. We stopped in on a whim on the way to Pixieland and very glad we did. This was a gem of a find and we will be back for sure. read more

First time at afghan cuisine & I'll say don't doubt this place at all. Small menu packed with flavors that will surprise you. First things first we were greeted with a big welcome. Than the owner took our orders and told us 15min wait. I'll wait 30mins... The food was so good and cooked so perfectly. Everything hot, homemade with love, meat were so juicy. The sauce all made fresh. Owner keep asking if we needed anything. We were token care of. Than we got a free baklava on the house! So good. Hidden little restaurant easy to miss on Monument, driven by plenty of times, but wee glad we finally stopped by. I got the Qaboli Palau. Wife got the chicken kabob. The lamb was tender stewed on bone. Yummy marrow inside. Mixed in with seasoned rice, bits of sliced almond, carrot strips and raisins. It was very flavorful. In trying to find a new favorite Afghani restaurant, we decided to give Afghan Cuisine a try - and we were not disappointed! Here is our experience: Dinner for 3 adults without alcohol - about 50.00 including tax. When you are seated, you walk over to a table near by for silverware and napkins - and there is water as well. Easy to get to and made sense for the size of this place. The server came right over and took our order. I felt the food came quickly and was well prepared. We ordered: - Bolani Gandana - This was a really nice treat, although a bit spicy for our tastes. -Borani Banjan - 2 of the 3 of us were not fans of eggplant, however we LOVED this dish! This is definitely the best way to eat eggplant in my opinion. -Chicken Qorma - Pieces of both breast and dark meat in a rich, flavorful sauce. It came with a HUGE portion of rice and naan. - Chicken Kebobs - So delicious, tender and a large portion for the price. Again served with rice and naan. - Kofta - Meatballs were a very good, and again the portion size was more than enough for a meal. We ended up taking home portions of most of the dinner, and had enough that the 3 of us ate it again a few days later. Afghan Cuisine just opened 10 days ago. It's located across from the skate park where 7-Eleven is. I called in my order and the gentleman told me the wait would be about 25 minutes. When I arrived, I still had to wait an extra 20. They kept apologizing for the delay. And the wait felt longer because they keep their doors open and it is so warm in there. Parking is tight. Luckily I found a spot. They have a free sambosa offer on Yelp when you check in but they were not aware of it. However, they were very nice and gave me a free one anyway. :) They're new. I get it. They will work out their kinks in time and get a rhythm going eventually. I ordered the bolani gandana, two chicken kabobs, 1 beef and 1 chapli. They give plenty of yummy basmati rice with your kabobs. The sauces are flavorful. Love the spicy one. I prefer the beef over the chicken. The chapli could have been more moist but it was fine. The bolani had a good amount of leeks in it. I would come here again and try the lamb. My gf says it's delish. But I would definitely call ahead. And if the wait time is 25 minutes, I'll arrive in 45! read more

Went on the first day they opened (that I knew about -apparently they had a soft opening a week or two before). I've been to about three or four other Afghani places, so I ordered my favorite go-to items to compare. Bolani was not as good here as other places. It was really flat with very thin exterior and filled very thinly with hardly anything. Nice flavor, but disappointing. Chaplee Kabob also fell short for me both flavor and quality. Generous portions, though. Essentially, I received two large, thick hamburger patties that were somewhat dry and lacked the seasoning and flavor I've had at the other places. The portion is nice, and the rice was good. Prices are good here. The free soup we received while we waited for our order was nice, with good spice. I will go back again to try other things, but 3 stars for being just ok for me. I wish them well on staying open, as the location is good but no luck for the past tenants, and the parking is no good. read more

Since moving to Concord and the neighborhood recently, my wife and I have been hitting this place up almost weekly for either ourselves or for when friends come to visit as our go-to takeout spot. Both the chicken and beef kabobs are juicy and bursting with flavor, and their spicy beef patty packs heat with depth of flavor that works so well. Their sides are just as delicious and we're always supplementing whatever kabobs we get with the beef mantu (dumplings covered in sauce w/ nuts) and lamb korma if we're especially hungry. If we're in the mood, we'll grab some baklava, and you've basically got the highest quality Middle Eastern meal you can get in the Bay. The owners are extremely nice people and it's as easy as a quick call to place your order to swing by and grab it within a short amount of time. These guys deserve more recognition than they're getting, and I'd even go as far as saying that this is worth an hour drive from anywhere else in the Bay Area if you're looking for the best Afghan food in the region. read more

This would be my new favorite restaurant, if I lived nearby. I will make the effort to come here every time I am in the Walnut Creek area. My wife and I took my mother and her husband to dinner here, but none of us had ever tried Afghan cuisine. Based on other reviews, it looked worthy of a try. It was great; start to finish! The owner/server was excellent; friendly, helpful and welcoming. We started dinner with the Banjan (a warm eggplant dish with tomato and a yogurt sauce over it.) It was fantastic, very flavorful, more like a dip than sliced eggplant. Perfect match with the provided Na'an bread. We also ordered the Chicken/Shami and rice dish, which is similar to Kabob meat or Greek Souvlaki. The meat was tender, seasoned well and the Basmati rice was soft and perfectly cooked. We added the Narunj Palow, which had very tender and mild lamb, with sweet orange peel & almonds in rice. It was the perfect combo of savory and sweet. Lastly we had the "made in restaurant" Beef Mantu dumplings. They also had a yogurt sauce, and were spiced well. Brought to the table were two sauces, one a yogurt based sauce (very mild spice), and a red sauce (high spice, but tasted good as well as providing heat.) The total bill for 4 of us, was just under $92, which I felt was a bargain; we added a nice tip. The owner talked with us for quite a while (even taught us a couple of Afghan words!), and showed us an area where people can dine in traditional Afghan ways (pillows and lounging style). This is a great find, and if you like Mediterranean style foods, you will love this place as well. read more

This place is great. I've ordered about 20 times by now and probably 90%+ of the time the food has been excellent, and the rest of the time it's been very good. I haven't tried everything on the menu, but I have probably tried most of the popular stuff. Shoutout to the beef koobideh. My wife is Persian and we've found this place hits the spot for some of our cravings for Persian food. The green sabzi isn't quite like ghormeh sabzi, but in fact you can probably eat much more of it the way they do it. I'm not sure if it's vegan but it tastes like it. It tastes extremely healthy. Overall absolutely recommend if you're into these flavors. It's not quite directly competitive with the other local Middle Eastern restaurants, but it's as good as any of them, if not actually better. read more

We decided to be adventurous and try Afghan Cuisine... Was it ever delicious! We liked all of the dishes we ordered: Dawl, Dulma, Combo Kabob, Qormy Gosht, Tarragon Soda, and Baklava. The chef (and owner --we think) was so kind and accommodating. For example when we ordered a certain dish, he warned us that it was spicy and then asked us how hot we liked. --We love spicy, so it was perfect. The indoor lighting is a bit unusual, but it is a clever way to distract customers from being overwhelmed by vehicle headlights shining inside at night. Working with the owner was a breeze and he was communicative and made good suggestions for the menu. They individually packaged each meal in eco-friendly recyclable to-go containers and provided generous portions. They delivered the food in person and the best part was that the food was all in tact (not mixed) on their drive over. We ordered rice, chicken kabob, beef koobideh, hummus, Afghan salad, and bread. They even included some chapli kabab. Everything was fresh and all the guests were raving about the food and asking where it was from.
