Not gonna lie, as Nigerian-Americans, the husband unit and I have a pretty high bar for West African food and a pretty low bar for snappy service at a West African restau. Here, the food was pretty ok but the service was even better than the food. I know, shocker - but true. For context, we had a sit-down dinner on Tues evening, no other patrons were eating in the restau but 5 people picked up their dinner while we were there. Here's the deal: the hubs and I ordered at 6:50p and got our appetizers at 7:05, our entrees followed pretty quickly after that. That's pretty snappy, considering we shared a plate of fried plantains and each had a bowl of goat meat pepper soup. The plantains were undersalted, but piping hot in temp (as if they'd just been fried). No worries by me, but hubby wasn't impressed. The pepper soup was the star for me, it was sooooo HOT ( like my lips, mouth, and throat were tingly-type HOT -- delish). I'm smiling just thinking about it, but the hubs didn't appreciate the heat factor, and wasn't taken by the bony goat meat. The soup reminded me of home. The waiter must have been watching us b/c as we neared the bottom of our pepper soup bowl he walked up and asked if we wanted our entrees at that point. Yes, yes we did. And it quickly arrived. That's prompt by any restau standard. For the entrees -- we ordered jollof rice, curry goat w/side of jollof rice, spinach delight (i.e. spinach with some egusi) and fufu. I'd have preferred goat stew on the menu b/c the curry goat was only ok (savory, served with nice chunks of goat, but not close to the tomatoey glory that is good goat stew). So, don't get curry goat if you really want goat stew. The rice was a bit sticky (like they used jasmine rice instead of parboiled long grain rice) but it was flavorful - of course, my mom makes better jollof. ^_^ The spinach delight was definitely spinachy but more so bland (needed more flavor, heat, salt) than delightful, and the fufu was good (kinda hard to mess that up). We washed our meal down with ginger beer (good stuff, def for ginger lovers) and took an order of plantains to go. Would I eat there again? Only if I ordered for myself b/c the hubs was not a fan. Well it was mine and my friend's first time eating at an african restaurant and everyone was pleseant. my girlfriend loves plaintains like they are her favorite and even though she was given a whole banana it was over cooked. it is supposed to be moist she protested to me since i had never really eaten any before like she had. The drinks were moderately priced and delicious. However i used a groupon as well for this outing as well and my beef was little to nothing. It was so small and spread throughout my plate to look like my plate was full. My girlfriend had a plentiful curry chicken dish with loads of rice and a house sauce. Yet it was yellow rice and she ordered whitw rice. They seemed to ignore that. I had the grilled goat dish which only included 3 small pieces of goat meat and a small piece of chicken meat. My husband took me here as an early Valentines Day dinner and what a treat it was! The service was great (VERY helpful waitstaff-even the owner came over and spoke with us for a little while-REALLY nice guy), and the food was delicious. This was our first time eating African cuisine and so we relied on the waitstaff for guidance and they definitely pulled through-she even brought out little samples of some of the dishes for us to try. The red curry was full-bodied, spicy, but not overdone, ..with Jollof rice, cooked to perfection - NOT into a big, white paste, like some other cafes and carry-outs. I will not say their names. Your delightful Jamajama, tenderly cooked and flavorful enough to be memorable, redefines spinach. Finally, your hospitality was genuine ..and warmed my mother's heart. I usually like family owned hole in the walls -- but this place is more like a hole in a swamp! The service is poor and the food...subpar! Okay... order the curry chicken...and what you get is fried chicken (yeah..they sell that too) with curry gravy dumped on it! What's worse is the service! Um... there is no one in the restaurant ... and you still have to wait for someone to take your order! Come on! And even then the waitress comes with a grimace and sour look! If you are new to West African food try Bukom in Adams Morgan. The food is better than this place -- believe me. Don't test this theory ... you will be sorry! The food and service were very good. We called ahead, spoke to a nice woman named Ellie, and arrived to a smaller sized restaurant on Bonfiant. At first we were concerned because the restaurant was almost empty and there was an unusual smell like herbal soap that filled the air as we entered. Counting my date and I, there were 3 customers in the restaurant. (The other customer spoke loud on his cell phone for 30 minutes non-stop while smacking his lips and open mouth chewing like a wild billy goat.) So why 4 stars? The 2 waitresses (Nikki and Ellie) were sweethearts and very accommodating. The beef appetizer, the whole fried tilapia, the vegetables with peanut sauce, the plantains, the rice, and the spinach were excellent. We were disappointed they had no ginger beer in stock and had no desserts. We also were not impressed with the steak, way overcooked. Very good West African food, nice people running the restaurant. I come with some African friends several times a year for a good meal. They don't serve alcohol, but the food is good and inexpensive. They have many of the typical W African dishes (generally sauces, spicy or not as you like) with beef, chicken, fish or goat along with fufu, jolof rice, white rice,plantains, yam, etc. Service is not super fast, but is adequate. I do not usually complain about service, but this place was horrible. My girlfriend and I went here Friday evening. No one was in side or outside. I walked in myself to get menus and alert them to our presence so they could bring water. After ordering the appetizer, we received it and never saw the waitress again. 45 MINS. Other african couples walked in and were eating within 20 mins while we waited outside on the patio. Eventually we paid for appetizer and left. The waitress was upset with us and said the food was ready. I am not complaining if it takes a long to make the food. It was the complete lack of attention or effort. Avoid! read more

Outside of my husband's cooking (Ghana man) I love his cooking... this is the only one I keep asking my husband to go to. This place is a rip off, dishonest, and no care or concern for the customer. I was walking by and saw a sign for a half chicken, rice, and soda $6.99. The place was empty and I ordered and I was served a quarter chicken. I also ordered a side of black eyed peas that were terrible. The food was ok nothing special and when I asked the server about the rest of the Chix she said sign was a mistake. I pointed out that on the menu half Chix is 7.99. The check had 6.99 on it. This place was cozy and the atmosphere was warm and relaxing...and the food was very good. It was my first time at the restaurant and I appreciated the service and dishes. Enjoy the soya, jollof rice, grilled chicken, attieke...it was great! I've been to places that had the whole "gllimmer and glatz" thing going on and the experience was miserable. This place was just chill, simple and nothing flashy, but you felt at "home," wherever that was for you. Several times, the staff came out to just see how we were doing and wanted to make sure we were happy and was ready to know what needed to be done to heighten the positive experience there. "If you're happy, we're happy" was all the chef kept saying and it was cool. No restaurant is completely perfect. I have lived and worked in Africa for several years. I understand that Washington DC conceptions of service, food preparation, hygiene, etc. are something of a cultural bias. But let's be honest here -- the poor folks who run this place are sadly overmatched. The service is slow and inaccurate; stuff comes or doesn't come intermittently, and at the end of the day the flavors and quality are a poor reflection of African cuisine. A restaurant I frequented for a couple of years in Lagos used to have three pat expressions when the customer asked after a missing food order: it is coming, it is finished, it is spoilt. One of the worst African places I have visited. I had a groupon which they probably did not like. So I order the roasted croaker with plaintains and spinach.She gets me the croaker burnt and grilled with rice and then argues that I had ordered the rice. The rice was over cooked, there was v little sauce with the fish. I had 2 more orders the Shrimp Egussi and the roasted chicken. After 20 minutes she comes and tells me there is no shrimp. I asked her why did she not tell me about that before at this point she starts yelling and screaming at me. I look at her in disbelieve. I think because I was a groupon customer he just did not want to give me the shrimp. Next the owner comes and tells me she was sick and so she was yelling. I tell him she gave me the wrong order and he said he would bring out a plate of plaintain which he did not The roasted chicken came. It was not roasted, he has again cooked an Egussi as it was easire for him to do so. First time trying this place. Nice decor and atmosphere. The man at the front was with another customer but still greeted me warmly. After serving the guy in front of me, the man took my order. Found this place by using a groupon like many others who commented. We went at 3ish on Sunday so understandbly it was cleared out. Immediately greeted by the owner which is a nice touch. Atmosphere was poor, its like the place was trying to have the 'hole in the wall feel', but it was just outdated and old. The food however, was rather good. Beef kebab was on point and Egussi Shrimp was really good, lots of flavor and the shrimp were perfectly cooked. My lady got the curry goat which was not too bad. Years ago I ate at Roger Miller and ordered a seafood dish. I don't remember which one but I remember thinking it was the most amazing fish I'd ever had in my life! Then tonight I ordered from them a bunch of different vegetarian foods including sides and just finished stuffing my face with it. It was again amazing! It is so hard to find sublimely delicious, healthy, varied vegetarian food options and this place just fulfills every one of those needs. Just came back. I read the reviews and thought, oh well, I could spend some time practicing my french. Service was very fast actually. We were the only ones, we ordered an appetizer, 2 main dishes and sodas. From start to finish we were at the restaurant less than 90 minutes. I really liked the fried shrimp appetizer. My husband had a goat entree that he liked. I forgot the name of the chicken dish I had. It was fine. The bill came to $30. read more
