My friends and I were searching for a restaurant one night and I remembered that my friend who is Cameroonian kept raving about a Cameroonian restaurant in Silver Spring. I'd passed by it before but had never been and needless to say I was very impressed. Of course, the most important thing is the food, which was very good. I ordered the roasted fish and that came with spinach and plantains and it was cooked to perfection. My other 3 friends that evening also enjoyed their meals. Lastly, the service was really good and everyone made us feel welcomed. The chef personally came out to talk with and wished us well. I live in the area so I will definitely be back. Terribly attentive to our needs and questionsWe ordered the Sowyer Beef Kebab, which was juice well seasoned and came with a pepper sauce that was delightful. Then came the entire, the Yassa which was chicken marinated in lemon juice, onions, rice and couscous. Unfortunately I was not told that it is made with mustard and still has the bones. Both of which I don't really like, which is why I cut it by .5. However, the portions were satisfyingly large. Gave me enough that I had a solid lunch after. I have been here a few times before I moved to Silver Spring and am impressed with the food, portion sizes, and low costs. I have gotten various croaker and tilapia options and both are really good. You do Jane to be careful with the bones though. The sides such as plantains and fufu are great as well and many entrees have them included. Various Groupons and restaurant.com certificates always seem available, which makes the value even better. The service is friendly but it is on the slower side, which is understandable as they take their time to make the food. Ok, scratch what I said. Yes, it's really good. I wish I could eat it again, but if only if they get around to serving you! Not only did we have to wait around idly for 5 minutes without anyone coming out from the back to seat us, we waited over forty five minutes trying to get someone to take our order before we just got up and left. Two "servers" just shuffled in and out while we watched them pathetically mess up other people's orders not once but twice and knock someone's water all over the table. They were a little more crowded than "usual" with about ten guests (I know crazy right?) so we're trying to be understanding and waiting patiently. We built in two hours for our meal before the movie but as 10 minutes become 30 we're darting looks towards the kitchen and the servers. It was like watching two headless chickens bob in and out of the kitchen not knowing exactly how to run dinner service. But the real kick in the butt was watching two other tables get seated the minute they walk in and the servers (BOTH of them!) immediately asking if they have any questions, make food suggestions, and take both tables' orders within five minutes while ignoring our table the whole time! As if that wasn't rude enough, a minute before taking their orders, she asked if we ordered yet and we said a clear "no" but decided against serving against apparently. I've had a drunk server at truck stop Denny's outperform these two. At this point we had enough, and pretty much realized waiting any longer was futile. Having eaten here before, we knew they were going to take forever to get the food out to the table (even without messing up) and from what I recall, forever to close your check, the remaining hour left would be better wasted at a restaurant that actually wants your business. Surprisingly, they noticed immediately when we got off our butts (omg, now you guys care about my money!) and started calling at us, "What happened?" Really? What happened? Gee whiz, I'm not sure, I didn't know that trying to order food was going to be more obtuse than the DMV. To sum it up, great food, but prepare for some of the most unprofessional service of your life. If I knew I was going to be waiting over 45 minutes only to be snubbed I could have made the drive over to Swahili in PG county which has as good, if not better food and tremendously better service and made it back to the AFI with time to spare. Roger Miller is a solid dining choice in Silver Spring. Though the restaurant is off the beaten path and the interior is a little dated, it's such a wonderful place to dine al fresco when it is nice out. I know that some reviewers are irked by the wait for food, but the manager makes it clear that all the food is prepared when you order and from scratch, hence the wait. I have liked every dish that I have had here. My favorite entree is the Yassa and I love the spicy fried chicken wing appetizer. There is typically a choice of sides for the entrees between rice (which is amazing) and fufu. I personally am not a huge fan of fufu and would suggest that potential diners research the side before trying it since I think it's a bit of an acquired taste. All in all, I've been so happy to live close to Roger Miller because the food is great and the prices are very reasonable. read more

Four star that is how awesome and delicious the food is. They lose one star because they still have not learned customer service. They put S in SLOW! OMG! So go when you are not in a hurry and can chill . come with your patient hat on. But once you are served, it will be well worth the wait. I love, love, love this place! Delicious food, cheap price, outdoor patio seating for sunny days - you can't go wrong by choosing this place. I've been a few times, but I almost always go with a fish dish - the roasted tilapia being my favorite. The flavors are so robust, and so authentic. I prefer my meals to come with jollof rice, but I have friends that rave about the plantains as well. The goat pepper soup is my go to whenever I'm in the mood for REAL spice, and also whenever I'm sick and need to clear out my sinuses. And one of the best things about this restaurant - it's SO cheap! My friend and I shared the goat pepper soup and a lunch special, and our total was $18... yes, you read right, less than $20 and we left satisfied and happy. Can't beat it! Note that this is a small, possibly family owned restaurant - meaning there aren't a lot of wait staff, and chances are, your food will not be churned out as quickly as you would anticipate it to be, like at a chain or a larger restaurant. But rest assured that it's well worth the slight wait - it will be freshly made, and delicious, and you'll leave with a happy belly. Overall, a nice place. First, their prices are quite reasonable, which is rare for the area. The restaurant itself is somewhat small, but very clean and features a nice color palette and a patio for outside eating. The service was relatively fast, but a little absentminded. Mid-ordering and a couple other times we were cut off or interrupted by someone interrupting the waitress, or she just walked away which was a little weird. I believe we were in and out in about an hour during a time when the restaurant was approximately 60% full, so I did not experience the lengthy wait other reviewers commented on. The food itself was not bad overall. The plantains, spinach and beef skewers were excellent. The meat choices are primarily chicken, goat, beef and shrimp. The grilled goat was really tough, but the curry dishes complimented the goat since it had time to soak up and soften in the nice flavors. Overall, the restaurant offers a nice variety of appetizer, dessert, and meal choices for reasonable prices and is convenient to all of the attractions in downtown Silver Spring. The quaint and cozy atmosphere of the dining area leave only the taste of the food and energy of the hostess responsible for winning over the guests.The staff and service at this restaurant are fantastic! Most of the dishes are absolutely new to the average American consumer, and it would be great if more pictures were available on the actual menu. I've been in to the Roger Miller Restaurant several times for lunch, and tonight ordered delivery for dinner. I've definitely liked the lunches I've had -- groundnut stew with chicken once, and egussi goat stew with fufu once -- but the big winner for me was tonight's dinner, the grill-roasted whole croaker. Delicious! Flavorful but not painfully spicy, the fish has a lovely crisp skin, tender meat, and is served with a flavorful brown sauce on a bed of onions and pepper. Spinach and fried plantains found out the meal. SO VERY TASTY! The restaurant itself is small, and for dine-in service, service can be slow. Nobody's ever been outright rude, but the servers I've had weren't particularly attentive. but the food is so good that I honestly don't care. My favorite things are the palm butter stew w/ goat (pictured) and the cassava leaf. The meat is always tender and juicy and it's really not expensive. Portions are solid too. Jollof rice was missing. Egusi shrimp had 5 small shrimp in it, hunks of spinach and barely any egusi. The moi moi was under cooked with actual chunks of whole beans in it and no seasoning. This is probably one of the most authentic exotic cuisines in Silver Spring, beating even the many fabulous Ethiopian restaurants downtown. If you're into cheap delicious dishes filled with adventurous flavors, and eager to practice your French with the 'locals' from Mali and Cameroon, this is your place. Fantastic! We went here at the recommendation of a friend who happens to be African so we figured she knew what she was talking about. She SO did! The food was amazing! We had the yassa chicken, ground nut stew with chicken, charcoal chicken, grilled fish. couscous, and sautéed spinach. Everything was flavorful and fresh and every item has it's own unique flavor profile (which is NOT always the case with some ethnic cuisine. And please know that I HATE the fact that I just described this as "ethnic" but it's late and I couldn't come up with another catch all descriptor to make my point.) The yassa chicken had a delicious lemon flavor that was pronounced but not overpowering. The groundnut stew had a peanut butter taste but again, it was just right. Discernable but not overly sweet or cloying. Just delicious! The grilled chicken and fish were delicious! My only wish is that the fish had been larger. Great food, interesting flavors, ridiculously low prices and the most gracious owner/manager ever (he shook our hands, thanked us profusely for coming and assured us that the food would always be fresh)---yeah, we will DEFINITELY be back often! read more

This was our first time trying an African restaurant, and we were pleased with the roasted croaker dish. The fish itself had an abundance of flavor served on the bone, and the sides were a nice compliment to the fish. Really impressed with the food at Roger Miller Restaurant and the pricing! I have spent significant time in West Africa and was eager to try a few of my favourite dishes. My husband had the Groundnut Stew with chicken and fufu and it didn't disappoint. I got the Egussi Stew with fish and it was absolutely delicious. Everything was very well prepared. We got side orders of fried plantains and boiled plantains. The boiled were delicious. The service was very friendly and speedy. The portions were generous. Prices are about $8-10 per entree which is much cheaper than other West African restaurants within DC. We will definitely be returning to try the cassava leaf, the Okro stew and more. read more

I love this place. Authentic food. Like other diners said, they are out of a lot of things a lot of the time, especially eguzi, but you cannot go wrong with the whole fish! I also like the appetizers, the beef sowyer kabob is yummy. The plantains and spinach side dishes are delicious. The food here is a good deal price-wise as well. The atmosphere is very mom and pop, close quarters but a nice patio in the summer. The Nigerian music videos and orange walls make me very happy and give me interior decorating inspration. It's true that there can sometimes be a long wait for the food, so don't go here on your way to the airport or anything. I have seen my food come out more quickly since the reopening. read more

My fiance ordered the fried chicken, my mother the pepper soup and cassava leaf goat and i the plantains, pepper soup and Tiko steak oh and we all LOVED the Pineapple Orange Guava juice... all was delicious... unfortunately wen it came time to pay i was turned off... our bill was $32.04, i handed the lady $10.04 cash and a VISA for the balance.... next thing i know 3 ppl including who i believe was the owner were at the register trying to determine how much to put on my card... My husband and I came here for the first time last night with a $24 Groupon, and ordered roughly $30-$32 in food. We had no problems with management. The food was delicious. There are a few things I noticed in other reviews that I would like to address below: The restaurant is run by a Togolese man who is in his 50s-60s. There are two women who run the dining area, and the restaurant is small. Like *most* countries outside the US, Togo follows the practice of eating unhurried meals. Yes, there is a wait for food -- they bring plates out one at a time rather than altogether. This is expected. Secondly, a lot of the other complaints I've read seem to be pretty stereotypically American. He is rude, takes too long, hovers, etc. Before going to an authentic West African restaurant, I would advise reading up on the culture. Yes, this restaurant may be located in the US but when you step foot into the restaurant you are walking into a West African restaurant. 1.) Do not smell your food. It's considered to be incredibly rude. 2.) Always thank the waitresses and host. Not just "The food is good," but rather, "Thank you for your kindness" or "Thank you for the meal." This will make a huge difference in the way you are treated as a customer, as you become something more akin to a friend/guest vs someone out to eat dinner. 3.) Togo is a West African country -- French is the national language. Even if you don't speak fluently, saying Bonjour, Salut, or ca va will make a difference. I definitely plan on coming back here again, with or without a Groupon. The wait is completely worth it. The spicy goat soup was fantastic, the fufu was great, the grilled goat was tender and the egussi shrimp was very flavorful. All spicy, of course, but delicious. I don't know how this restaurant got ANY good reviews. I had a Groupon for this place and decided to invite a friend for a double date... based on the good reviews. The food and service was absolutely horrible. I don't know what my friends ordered... but it can be only described as green manure... and apparently didn't taste much better accordingly to them. The meal my girlfriend had was tasteless and the beef was hard and inedible as if it had been over-microwaved. I had curry chicken because they were out of the curry goat I wanted... and it was like they used salt as though it was sugar. And then there were maybe 3 tables being serviced... but the waitress was quite inattentive and the meal took an hour to be served... and each meal came out at various times... where my friends were finished eating (well, what they COULD eat) before I received my plate. And, the appearance of the kitchen, bathroom, and restaurant overall makes me question food safety... although I didn't get sick.... I'm really not surprised if anyone does. Look, I'm not one of those reviewers that just makes bad reviews because I was upset with the service or gets nit picky... I'm really considerate with my reviews... and I really enjoy african fare... and supporting restaurants with african food... but, this was one of the worst experiences I've had in a restaurant in a while. Let me start with the positives...The server was pleasant and the owner (or who I assume to be the owner came out to speak with me and was nice). Now to the food. I ordered the Spinach Delight, Fried shrimp appetizer, pepper soup and grilled steak entree and and a salad. With the exception of the soup salad and the rices served with the two entrees, EVERYTHING ELSE was extremely salty. Inedible. My preference for salty foods is higher than everyone else I know. I couldn't believe it that I couldn't even eat it. The grilles steak was supposed to be Flank steak... wasn't even close. It was two extra thin round pieces of bottom round...not fit for grilling only a low and slow method of cooking. It was the toughest piece of meat I've ever had.... and it too was too salty to eat. The food I ordered took 45 min to make. Once I got my to go order I was missing the second dish. I told the young lady that took my order and she never apologized to me for forgetting it. So disappointed in my experience with this place. The food is great which makes it even more disappointing because the service sucks. By the third time I called to place my to go order, the lady finally stopped talking to everyone else when she picked up and proceeded to take my order. Keep in mind I called 20 min before I got there. When I arrived my order wasn't ready. No biggie. The problem is it seemed like this lady never put in my order to begin with. Had to wait at least 35 min to get food I ordered 20 min in advance not to mention the lady asked me on 5 separate occasions what I actually ordered. One other customer behind me actually answered one of the times cuz she couldn't get it. Finally got my food and home to find out the lady messed up half my order. I wouldn't have been so mad if I didn't have to drive 30 min out of the way to wait 35 min to have my order messed up. I'd looked forward to trying this restaurant but was sorely disappointed. The interesting food was totally overshadowed by the jaw-droppingly bad service. The restaurant was empty when we walked in and sat at a table for 4. There were only 2 of us, but neither of us is particularly petite and didn't want to be crowded at a very small table for 2. The waitress/hostess/prison guard told us to move to one of the smaller tables. I pointed out that there was NO ONE else in the restaurant, and a man in the back, who appeared to be an employee, spoke to her quietly--my impression was that he was agreeing with me--but she said, "No. They are not allowed to sit anywhere except a table for 2." We moved, grudgingly, and placed our order. To say she was lackadaisical would be a compliment. While we were waiting for our food, she sat at the table in the back ,joking and laughing with other employees. Never stopped by to let us know it was coming soon, or if we were, "doing ok" as most service people often do. She acted irritated when, after finally getting her attention, I motioned her over and asked for more water, This is a very small restaurant. It shouldn't have been difficult to get her attention, particularly since we were her only customers. Here's the kicker: When she served our food, she was TALKING on her CELLPHONE and kept it tucked under her chin, having told the person she was talking to, "just a minute" as if she had no intention of spending any more time with us than was absolutely necessary. By the time she placed our order on the table, the was no room for our plates! We had ordered a nice assortment of food, assuming we would be sharing some and taking some home, hoping to get a good idea of what this restaurant had to offer. I didn't expect our overall experience to include a lesson in juggling. Need I mention that NO ONE had come in to eat in the entire time we were there?? We ate, while I fumed (my companion was also irritated, but didn't want to make a scene. I wanted to make a scene, but didn't), and overall, the food was decent. I liked the egusi. I don't think I've had better egusi, outside of a native Nigerian/Ghanaian kitchen. They do not 'westernize' the food, like Ghana Cafe, but their entertainment is not quite like Sahara Oasis or Bukom, either. You can enjoy music videos on the screen, while sipping some mango juice. Nothing is better than thinking "ooh, I've never had X food. Look- an X restaurant!" and then having it be delicious. I ate here a year and a half ago, and it was the first time I had any sort of African food. Roger Miller Restaurant is West African, more specifically Cameroon. As a vegetarian I was quite happy here, plus the waitress was helpful when we were trying to figure out all of the things on the menu (plus what did and did not have meat, and what dishes were secretly better than the others). Our group was the only one not to speak French in the little restaurant, but it looked like everyone knew each other and were hanging out That didn't take away from the service though, it was quick for our group of 5. read more

i've been here twice in the past month or so.... the first time i was impressed with the service, the food, and the atmosphere. we sat outside on a nice summer evening. my dinner companion speaks french and so do much of the staff and regulars. the food was different and delecious, and they have 4-5 vegetarian dishes. just this past saturday night, we spent a breezy summer evening there again. our waiter was different and not as good. they were out of lots of regular menu items ... like no salad whatsoever. i wasn't crazy about my entree, either. but i hesistate to say too many negative things because i really like the place, i may give them another try. i hope they survive as a business. my companion thought they charged too little for their entrees and most of the clientele seemed to order very little and hang around for hours. we shall see, NO? read more
