Tastes like food. No more, no less. I had the fish tacos which was OK. I'm being generous by saying it was OK because I didn't even finish it. Upon pick up of the taco, it spewed much liquid from the taco to the plate and the tortilla was sopping wet. I know I squeezed lime over it, but that sliver of lime did not emit the amount of liquid that had landed on my plate. The fish also had this taste to it... it was like gas or propane... as if it was cooked at too high of a temperature and the propane gas taste seeped into the fish. It's really unfortunate because I like hanging out in downtown Mountain View and there just are not a lot of good places to eat - I had been hopeful. My hunky dinner companion (what he wanted me to call him in this yelp review), code named "Fang", had the Mole Enchiladas. The mole sauce was actually quite good, but the chicken tasted pretty bland - like microwavable chicken enchiladas from Trader Joe's (I hate to diss Trader Joe's enchiladas, I just had one for lunch, but that only cost me 3 bucks.) Had to pay extra for chips and salsa. I also failed to see how it was "Californian" ....the top of the menu said something like "Mexican meets Californian cuisine" - maybe because they had fish tacos? I don't know. I would had expected more creativity. Also, when are people going to realize regular americans do not like pickled cauliflower? Service was nice. They remodeled the place quite nicely (from the old thai place that use to be there). Margaritas were not bad. Could be a good place after work happy hour if you work around the neighborhood. The food is wonderful. Full of flavor, very robust, large serving size. I asked for habanero sauce, and the chef brought out three different spicy sauces for me to try, including one that was just ground habaneros. As a true spicy lover, I could not ask for more! The interior is beautiful and the back patio is exactly what Mountain View needs. I can see it an easy place to frequent for the after work crowd. The menu needs some expanding, the service needs a little bit of work. With these two things worked on, it could easily be a five instead of a four. read more

Came here on a medium busy night. The service was fast and efficient. Tried both the Enjococado Enchiladas and the Mole Enchiladas and they were great. If anyone is wondering (and for my future reference) the mole sauce is a slightly sweeter while the enjococado is more savory and slight sour/tangy. I personally prefer the mole. Also the chips are wonderful (thin and crisp) and the salsas are a nice variety. I've also sat out in the back patio area on warm summer nights and that area is nice but the seats could be a little more comfortable. read more

This amazing Mexican restaurant is close to the light rail!!! We had a family dinner with 2 elementary aged children and they BOTH ate all their food (a first!! My youngest is super picky!). We have lots of Mexican food in the Central Valley but this find puts many to shame. The food is awesome!! The starter chips were crispy and tasted freshly made. I had a grilled Mahi Mahi fish and it was cooked perfectly!!! My son had carne Asada (on a kids menu!!! Awesome!!) he ate every bite. My daughter had the kids quesadilla and my husband had steak fajitas. I tried his steak and it melted in my mouth!!! The food arrived quickly!! My husband convinced my daughter to try the flesh of a grilled jalapeño. She was so upset. The manager brought her a glass of milk and extra chips right away to calm her mouth. No extra charge. I would have given this place 3 stars, except for one thing which put a "bad taste" in my mouth and ruined the rest of the evening: No complementary chips. Like complimentary bread at an italian restaurant, complementary chips and salsa has always been a part of our mexican dining experience. You want chips an salsa at this place? You gotta pay. They do provide some complementary horrid vegetables soaked in vinegar. I'm an avvid mexican food fan and this is the first time (in the US or Mexico) that I've had to pay for chips and salsa. Heck..even Fiesta del Mar (same family owners) provides complimentary chips....And the chps we did pay for? Not many chips, greasy/double fried and the salsa was nothing special. Other than that, the food was OK, and the overall experience somewhat forgettable. The best part of the evening was the service and company. Will I return? I have been to Agave a few times, and it is OK Mexican food. Today, I made a mistake with my order. I decided to try something new that sounded interesting. It was the Huevos Divorcidados (or something like that). Basically, it was two over easy eggs, each on a corn tortilla. One had red sauce, and one had green sauce. It also came with Chiliquiles. The eggs were very undercooked, with a runny white portion. Also, the food was not very warm, and seems as though it was sitting waiting to come out while the other meals were finished. I did ask if it was possible to have flour tortilla instead of corn, but the waiter did not want to accommodate my request. Others that got taco's were happy with their meal. There are quite a few Mexican restaurants on Castro, and I Agave is definitely not the best. I would suggest trying Fiesta del Mar Too, or Los Charros. read more

Was seated right away (party of two and it was a rainy Saturday night around 8pm). Server greeted us right away and the service continued to be great the whole time. The food was absolutely delicious. The carne asada was so flavorful. The drinks were amazing as well. Nothing bad to say about the place and I cant wait to go back and try other dishes. In another review it says they prefer a lower ambience but being here on a Saturday night it was already a low key ambience. Music was not loud and conversations were possible without having to talk over music. We have been to the sister restaurant Fiesta Del Mar which was your typical good Mexican food but I felt that the quality of food was way better at Agave. read more

What the? Something has changed. The chicken tortilla soup is a new recipe, the rice is no longer made with bits of potato and carrot and the beans taste very different and not made from scratch. The only reason I can give this place 3 stars is because the bartender came through and made me something he doesn't normally make... a lemon drop. It was delicious. But that was only after the guy bringing drinks brought me a shot of vodka twice until I had to go up to the bar and describe what I wanted. At first he said he doesn't make those, but then decided he'd give it a go. Turned out to be the only good thing. The food sucked. I had a dish with a "100 year old Garcia family" recipe and could barely eat it. My friend tried it and said "ew, yuck" then apologized because I was trying to eat it. Even the tortillas were tough. The chips are thick, taste old, and have no flavor. Won't ever come back and certainly won't recommend. Oh... major mishap.. the service REALLY SUCKED. Who even was our server??? Ignore any lower ratings- This is the best Mexican food I have had in the Bay Area, and everyone I've taken here has said the same thing!! There are so many things this place does better than any other I've been to- like even better than places like Torchy's in Austin. The outdoor patio is beautiful with such great ambience- I've taken my parents here and we all had one of the most memorable times, the people are so nice, attentive, and great to chat with. The chicken mole is his mother's recipe and it's outstanding. Im usually not a big chip person, but these are are so amazing, I honestly didn't know I could like chips this much!! The salsa is also delicious. They won Best margarita in Mountain View and I can totally see why, they're freshly made with natural ingredients, not like that gross bottled sweet and sour mix that so many places do. Last and most importantly- so many Mexican places don't have a vegetable in the place- but here they have a delicious veggie mix of broccoli, carrots, zucchini, peppers and onions. I always get a mix of chicken and vegetables in the mole enchiladas so it's healthy and delicious. Everything here tastes very high quality. Took my Mom here for Mother's Day lunch. Lots of restaurants on Castro street, all were very busy due to the special occasion. Luckily, this place wasn't so crowded. Service seemed good. I ordered the Enchiladas Enjocacade, and I forgot what my Mom ordered for food, and I'm assuming it tasted ok, but she did also order the margarita (plain) The chips and salsa were pretty good for starters. It came with 3 small bowls of different salsas. The margarita was pretty good tasting per my Mom, but the glass it was served in was very small, and mostly filled with ice. I'm guessing there was actually only about 2-3 oz of actual drink in there. When my Enchiladas came, I was really disappointed in the quality. It looked like store-bought corn tortillas ( the kind you can buy a dozen for a $1 for) and a plain boiled chicken breast with some lightly flavored sauce dumped over it. It also came with bland, unsalted refried beans, and a mound of rice on the side. What we ordered was nowhere near what the worth of the food was. The bill came to over $50. I will not be back. I prefer to sit in the corner room, as it doesn't have TVs, so it is better for socializing with friends. You can't go wrong with any of the menu items, and the staff is happy to accommodate dietary concerns (like gluten free, dairy free, vegetarian, etc). Excellent Place to Host a Private Party! We have a long term history with Fiesta Del Mar (which sadly was closed in 2015 https://www.paloaltoonline.com/blogs/p/2015/09/16/mountain-views-fiesta-del-mar-to-close), but many of the same staff and food live one via Agave Bistro. We decided to host a big ends-in-zero birthday party for my husband in the Agave Bistro side room, which easily accommodated ~50 people. They did a wonderful job. We cannot say enough thanks to them for allowing us to host such a great event. Everyone had more than enough to eat, drink, and overall all of us had a wonderful time. Many of our guests had moved away from the bay area over the years, and they traveled from afar, whether 1+ hours by car or multiple hours by plane. It was important to us to host a good party as a way to show thanks for the effort they made to come so far, and Agave delivered. Before the big day, Gilberto, Luis, Juan and others advised us on how best to use their space, their favorite dishes and drinks, margarita pitcher options, and they even worked with us to provide us with the HUGEST birthday flan. The executed perfectly. So many of the guests went out of their way to compliment the delicious food, excellent margaritas, wonderful service, and warm friendly atmosphere. Agave really made our special occasion a wonderful day. Also: if your party has some kids -- They set up a kids' table in the front of the private room, where the 10 or so kids colored, ate, and enjoyed themselves. 3.5 stars. I couldn't wait to try this place because it's opened by the Fiesta Del Mar people. Fiesta Del Mar Too is probably my favourite sit down Mexican place in the bay area. So what's different about this place which is just a couple blocks away? They have a bigger menu with different items -- you can still find old favourites like the Enjococado here, but we opted for the new and different stuff. The mister had the Huizilopochtli, which consisted of carne asada, mole enchilada and chile relleno, and I had the Cochinita Pibil, which was roasted pork in achiote sauce. My pork was pretty tasty if not a bit salty, but the mister's plate...oh my. The carne asada was really tender delicious, plus you get a couple different dishes in one. On a side note, they only serve 1 salsa instead of 3 with the chips :( I'm spoiled. We finished the meal with the tres leches cake, but it was nothing special -- felt a bit like it was defrosted because of the water content, but tasted alright. The margaritas? I like the ones at Fiesta Del Mar Too better, but the ones here did have a kick. Overall the food was good. Not as rustic or simple as Fiesta Del Mar Too but sometimes a little fancy is good. I was wandering down Castro St with some friends on Memorial Day, looking for somewhere to watch Game 7 of the Western Conference Finals. Saw that Agave had TVs and decided that basketball with a side of chips and margaritas was just what we needed. I give major props to the chips, salsas, guac, and queso that we ordered. The queso was so good that originally I was the only one that really wanted it, but as soon as it arrived, everyone dug in and we cleaned it out in just a few minutes. I was also a fan of the pitcher of Horni margaritas that we got. I think it was cranberry flavored, and I would definitely order it again. I ordered the enjococado burrito as my entree, which tasted fine but was nothing to jump up and down about. I personally prefer the guajillo sauce at Palo Alto / Vive Sol. The chicken was pretty bland, so all together, the combination was only okay. The other entrees ranged from the shrimp one that's labeled "Best Dish on the Menu," a soup, and enchiladas, and I think everyone else enjoyed their meal. The service was only so-so. The restaurant was pretty crowded with both Warriors and Sharks game going on, I'll give them that. Still, it took a pretty long time to order, get the check, and pay it. My friend ordered a soda that never came, so it was an extra five minutes to get it taken off the bill. None of us were in a hurry, but it would've been less acceptable if that wasn't the case. I've just recently moved here from Miami, so I've been searching everywhere for a great Mexican restaurant for good food but also a good ambience. I found both of those qualities at Agave! Our first visit however, we weren't attended for or had our order taken for the first 35mins but the food made everything better. I've gone back again and that definitely not the case service was great as well as our food! Well, I knew the reviews for this place weren't great. The good: lovely outdoor patio seating. Quiet, pretty, clean, spacious. Chips and salsa, beans, lettuce/dressing. The not so good:,quality of the grilled steak.... bordered on leathery, the plating of the Baja fish tacos. Unbelievably unappetizing. The fish itself was fine, but the tortillas were stale, there was no meaningful cabbage or lettuce, and the sauce -though tasted fine- was a horrific slimy pink looking mess. This place is cute with a great location! I came on a Thursday night to meet up with a girlfriend for dinner. I was greeted right away and found my friend pretty quickly. One of the few places with free chips and salsa! Not only did they have one, but three different kinds! So cool and unexpected. I I did feel the sever that helped us was short with us, almost rude. They did not pick up and become busy until after 30 minutes after we were seated. So I'm not sure why nobody checked on us for a while but the food was good. I had fish tacos and my friend had carne asada tacos. I had come once before to this location with the same friend and was very impressed with the ambience and service. That was during the summer and we were able to sit on the outside patio. I'm not sure if I would recommend this place to others by the service I got the other night. This is one of my staple restaurants. It has really great Mexican food and delicious drinks. I usually try to order something different every time I go, but the mahi mahi tacos are my go-to favorite. They have an excellent selection of margaritas as well. My personal favorite (at the moment) is the guava jalepeño marg. It just has a touch of heat and is not overwhelmingly spicy. The only thing I have had here that I was not super impressed with was the shrimp burrito. It's literally just a ton of baby shrimp sautéed in garlic, oil and spices and put in a tortilla (with a choice of sauce on top). No other ingredients. Although the shrimp were seasoned and cooked well, the burrito was lacking the other tastes and textures that are usually incorporated into this kind of dish. Other than that, this place is a great place to grab and drink and eat good high quality Mexican food on Castro. read more

First, even with reservations, I was hoping to get seated in the nicer room with the bar and mirrors but we were in the other room that was not impressive at all. This is our go-to spot for hosting Mexican in the area. Although there are other places you can get it cheaper food, its decently fancy and generally impresses guests. They emphasize their seafood offerings, but the land animals turn out just as well. Their burritos are fine, but I think the others dishes are more special, so I would recommend those instead. Service can be slow, but if you're willing to be aggressive for flagging them down, it should be fine. read more

This used to be my favorite place to go for dinner a d drinks. The bat tender makes an excellent margarita! The last 6 months the staff has changed and the service has been terrible. I waited 25 minutes at a table with no one coming over. I saw the manager and asked if someone could come over. He snapped at me that they were busy. Very disappointing. I went back again recently and the same manager decided the close the restaurant early without any warning. We arrived there to celebrate a birthday at 7:30pm. At 9pm we were given our bill and told no more drinks were available. No warning, just basically asked to leave. When we asked why they said they were closing early. After pressing a few of the servers we found out they were getting everyone to leave so they could illegally broadcast the fight. So disappointed in the management here. Enchiladas were really good and on point. Wife's sour cream and bean burrito was a hit. Margaritas had an odd flavour. I ordered the Chicken Suiza with tomatillo green sauce. Moist chicken breast in a flour tortilla bathed in a spicy tasty sauce. Good size portion. Not too heavy on the dairy or cheese so it was not super filling. Lots of full size TV's but the sound was not too loud.The TV's could be a little distracting if your not into sports.
