Modelo's & Tecate's were consumed in excess, so to coat our stomachs we got a variety of nachos and the enchiladas de mole. I tried to hurt myself on the mole sauce, it was awesome. I've enjoyed dining at all the Garcia family's Mountain View restaurants (La Fiesta, Fiesta del Mar, Fiesta del Mar Too) for the past 35 years. This was my first experience at Agave Mexican Bistro since the closure of Fiesta del Mar. Shortly after being seated in front of one of the large screen monitors featuring an MLS soccer match, I was served a large basket of chips and three salsas. I ordered two Baja Fish Tacos ($15.95), accompanied by rice and fried pinto beans. By the time the tacos arrived, I had finished the basket of chips so the tacos looked more enormous than they would have without the chips. The tacos were pricey (compared against $9.90 for two fish tacos at Sancho's in Palo Alto), but reasonably priced when you factor in the sports-bar ambiance and high rents in downtown Mountain View. However, the tacos were delicious and I had a very pleasant dining experience that satisfied my hunger. read more

On a recent trip to California, we met here with a friend for dinner. We were the only people on their patio and enjoyed the tranquility. It's really a nice courtyard on the backside of the house. We ordered appetizers and entrees​ but skipped desserts. I don't know if it was a one-time thing or if they make everything spicy on purpose. Even the Guacamole was spicy!! (We ordered some extra sour cream, but that didn't help a lot). The fajitas were more like stir-fry​ but tasted okay. The carnitas (we ordered extra not-spicy) was​ okay, but a bit dry. Also, the rice that came with it was spicy again. Hm. The salsa was spicy, the chips tasted old or fried-to-death. I don't know... this place has a lot of potentials​ and if they wouldn't try to spice up EVERYTHING the food would be more enjoyable (and this was not only my white-girl-spice level personality, we were a group of experienced spicy-food lovers). Deceptive advertising. I had a digital coupon for "buy one entree, get one free," so I brought a friend and we both made our selection. When it came time to pay, the coupon revealed additional details that were not initially available. Upon activation, it added the phrase "up to five dollars off." Now, there is not one entree on that menu under $15, much less $5, so they surely are not giving away any free entrees, despite what the coupon promised. read more

Pretty bad place with poor management and service which is a shame. Takes a long time for waiters to come even when there's nobody else at the restaurant. The menu is scan only which is fine but it's very hard to read well. We were given chips and ordered guacamole but it was served without any napkins. Food arrived a bit later but with no silverware or napkins!! We were not asked for our choice of beans. My husbands burrito was not even wrapped!! It was an open tortilla with things inside. This place has the best food and their staff is amazing! We came with a party of six and were seated immediately outside in their beautiful patio area. The man taking our order noticed the sun in our faces and moved an umbrella outside to give us shade. Wonderful food and excellent service. It is our go-to spot in Mountain View. The burrito bowl is delicious, their guacamole is fresh and flavorful and their chips are homemade and crisp, not greasy. I forgot to take a picture of the food but everyone cleaned their plates. We have been here twice and I cannot wait to go back. Phenomenal service both times. Delicious drinks from the bar. Seriously good fresh salsa and homemade chips. Vegetarian dream food! The beans, rice and sauces are meat-free. Such a rare find. I had the vegetarian burrito and cheese enchiladas. Both were so, so excellent. My son had the kids cheese quesadilla with rice & beans both times and loved it. My husband had the carnitas and is 100% in for the hour or so long drive to go back for more. I live in San Jose but my fiancée works in Mountain View and Agaves used to be our JAM every Thursday or Friday night. A couple margaritas, some chips and salsa, and their fiesta Del Mar enchiladas and tacos el Yaqui and we were golden. However, these last few times have really been lacking and I'm super sad to say we may be shopping for a new Friday night restaurant. The main disappointment has been the service. We always go around 5 so it's never crowded and the last few times the servers have messed up our orders, failed to bring us more chips and salsa even after being repeatedly asked, or never even asked if we wanted a second margarita. Last night my empty margarita glass just sat there and the waiter didn't come around until we were completely finished with our meal. How about another margarita ladies? Serendipity, happenstance, I cant think of any more synonyms right now. We just moved to Mountain View from Palo Alto, and we couldn't be happier. The people are tolerable, the meals don't cost an entire paycheck, and people are more like people and less like Stepford Wives. On a side note, or maybe a main note, I haven't decided yet, we DROVE down Castro because we're stupid and curious. In the distance, we see a sign, barely legible that reads "Agave Mexican Bistro". We don't think too much of it, but now we've been incepted. Tonight, I'm fresh out of a happy hour at work. I was peer pressured into drinking, and now I'm sorta hungry. We take a walk down Castro, and low and behold, we're outside this place, so we go in. It's sort of like a bar that also serves food, but they have a huge menu, so like maybe they're just diversifying. I get the fish tacos, my brother gets the mole. It takes like 20 minutes to come, which is kind of long, but my brother got a marg, so I'm thinking they were just giving him time. Chips are good, salsas were decent, and waiter was fantastic. We had a younger guy, and he was on it. Only got 2 tacos for $14 or whatever, which seems like par for the course, but my brother got like a mountain of mole for $20. Food was decent to say the best. To say the worst I'd call it mediocre, which is a synonym for decent, because the food was decent. Say that five times fast, and check this place out if you're in the mood for analysis paralysis while ordering, and actual paralysis after you eat the bottomless chips. read more

Yeah, this was A-Okay. After seeing a movie in Mountain View, my aunt and I were hungry. Hey, we shared a small popcorn. :) So we went into downtown Mt. View. This was my first time in the area. It's cute. I'll say that. It has a slight ritzy feel and of course, like no parking. Be prepared to drive around OR try the little lot. And by little, I genuinely mean it. I lucked out and found some street parking next to the little lot at 5:45 pm (2 hour parking until 6 pm on Saturdays). Then we walked over to grab food w/ her friend. Because we all love tequila we decided to try Agave Mexican Bistro. It was the wild card playoffs for football so we sat on the bar side of the restaurant. The service was prompt and quick with chips and salsa (three kinds). The salsa verde was much spicer than I'm used to. Our server was quite friendly and made some good jokes. I I opted for a house margarita on the rocks, her friend had the hibiscus margarita, and my aunt went with a blended strawberry margarita. The drinks came out fast - yay! Once we received our drinks, we were ready to order. Aunt opted for a chicken burrito; I had the carne asada tacos; friend went with the tortilla soup. This is when it goes meh. The soup was not brothy as we are used to. Quite frankly, it was the equivalence of tomato soup. She said she felt like she needed a grilled cheese to go with. Ouch. My tacos were similar to street tacos. FULL of meat (great) with a little onion and some cilantro. The rice and beans were terrrrrrribly bland. And there was no salt on the table to help it out. No salt or hot sauce. -__- I asked for a side of guacamole to help it out but even the guacamole was lacking. My aunt's burrito was HUGE. You can definitely get a burrito and split it there. How it tasted, I'm not sure but she didn't make any exclamations of how amazing it was. Overall, three stars experience. Food here is very good. It's very fairly priced, portions are generous and it's very good. It's always served piping hot. I've found servers and bartenders to be extremely polite and attentive, generous and professional. Margaritas are made w/ fresh juice and are delicious and inexpensive, compared to other places along Castro. Lots of TVs and a great place to watch a game. The very first thing that stands out was the attention and cheerfulness of the wait staff, especially, Isamar. Agave is a relative newcomer to the downtown Castro area and takes over a long time Thai restaurant space. As the area had several Thai options, I was always curious why there were so many Thai places so close together, so it's nice to see a new spot. The decor is nicer than the other Mexican restaurants in the area and has a large bar area with several big-screen TV's showing sports and other programs. There is actually a second room and we were seated there. The high ceilings, art, and roomy atmosphere means this place can definitely sit a lot of people. Interestingly, according to Kim N's review, Agave is opened by the same family that owns the nearby Fiesta Del Mar (1 and 2) as well as the Vive Sol restaurants. Sure enough, if you glance quickly at the menu, you will see several staple dishes from those establishments served here, namely the Enjococado (or Great Grandma's special). As someone who went to several of those place in a Enjococado showdown comparison, I feel silly if they actually are all owned by the same place. Anyway, back to Agave. The menu, besides the same staples of the Fiesta del Mar places, also features some Yucatan dishes such as Cochinita Pobil. Overall though, the price point appears to be fairly close although the execution and presentation are a tad better. It's not quite up to the level of Reposado in downtown Palo Alto, but it's a bit nicer than the very casual and crowded Fiesta del Mar and Vive Sol. Dinner is started with salsa and chips and you're also served a liquid in tea cups. The joke was that perhaps the tea cups were from the old Thai restaurant, but it's actually a complimentary serving of their tasty chicken soup. Our dishes came next: Enjococado Enchilado - the Great Grandma (just Grandma's) special from Fiesta del Mar. Same portion size and great sauce. Served with a side of rice shaped like an Aztec pyramid. The black beans topped with cheese were also very tasty. ($15) Huitzilopochtli - this dish is named after the Aztec God of War or Sun. It features all the main items you'd want: carne asada, mole enchilada, chile relleno and pico de gallo. With such an epic name, I actually wished the portions were a tad larger, especially at the price point ($23) Overall, we had a good meal at Agave and enjoyed the larger space, nicer decor, and solid food. While the menu has some new items from Yucatan, much of the food was similar to Fiesta del Mar, albeit with better presentation. I can't but help feel that the owners could have aimed for something a bit more novel for food choices and even a bit higher in execution, especially with a prime spot in downtown Castro's main street. Having ate recently at Reposado (which some feel is not authentic), the high end concept seemed to be carried out better over there although the prices were higher too. In the end, Agave really does feel like a slightly nicer Fiesta del Mar #3, but without the fun atmosphere I enjoy at the original location. Received an invite from a professional association I belong to for a kick off meeting at the Agave Bistro on Castro in Mountain View. I was not aware of the Agave Bistro establishment so as usual I looked up the reviews on Yelp and found the location. Parking was easy in the new multistory parking garage right behind the restaurant. While walking to the restaurant I noticed a large open area patio next to the building with a nice open bar and tables and chairs and saw people milling about and instantly thought this was the place! Not wanting to inadvertently crash someone else's function I went in the front door and to my surprise the place was packed! I could see the wonderful plates of food people had ordered that the place was rocking that night with not one table empty! I told the lady seating people that I was there for a professional function and she led be back through the restaurant full of smiling upbeat servers to the patio area. There were lots of plates and quite a selection of free appetizers on all the tables to nibble on and a no host bar to service everyone. I thought the food appeared to be above average for such a large event and everyone seemed to enjoy the food very much. The wait staff and bar keep did a great job hosting the event. I would highly recommend based upon the bar service and food I sampled and look forward to returning someday soon. read more

For starters, this place gets the best chips and salsa award hands down! You get a basket of perfectly crisp chips along with 2 types of salsa right as you sit down. Both salsas are medium spicy and full of flavor. The tomatillo salsa seemed the spicier one to me and had a nice citrus bite as well. The tomato based salsa was my favorite, I'm pretty sure I tasted Chipotle in that one. I knew I was in for a good lunch after that starter... Next, the bar is awesome! They had a HUGE variety of tequilas that rivals the largest selection around. A few tasty draft beer selections made me happy as it was only lunch time For lunch I went for one of the specialties, the Enchiladas Mole. Two chicken filled corn tortilla wrapped enchiladas served steaming hot in a little mini plate. They were topped with cheese and a delicious mole sauce and broiled to perfection. Great place! I had the potato taquitos & mixta salad; both were delicious. And the green salsa for the taquitos was fantastic, though they were a little too generous with the serving of salsa. I couldn't let so much of it go to waste, so I admit that I had a few spoonfuls of salsa after I finished my taquitos. Yum! They mark the vegetarian items on the menu, which is helpful.
