One of my favorite African spots in all of Dallas! To cure a cold, a hangover, or sheer hunger, Aggies will get you right every time. I was first introduced to Aggies by a Cameroonian friend, in 2018. I've been hooked since my first bite. The menu is very small, with the same consistent 7or 8 entrees offered . But if it ain't broke don't fix it because the food is phenomenal! Spicy, fishy, fibrous Eru will clean out your gut for real. My favorite is with chicken, but the beef is tenderrrrrrr baby. The tilapia is the best grilled fish I have EVER HAD! ANYWHERE! Hands down! No ! Whether you order it with rice/stew sauce, or fried plaintain, you can't miss! I've also had the spinach parfait which was really tasty and fresh, but wasn't packing the heat that I crave. But a really solid veggie option, nonetheless. Random notes: The interior hasn't been open for dine-in for a while, post Covid. So it's take out only. You don't need to call in your order (because they'll likely cuss you out) because the menu is small and stuff is available really quickly. 10 minutes max! Aggie's restaurant is my favorite place to eat good African fish, spicy,, juicy, and very flavorful. I have never ordered anything else here, so I can't tell you about them. I have been coming here since she open up a shop. I was ordering from her when she was still in her apartment just down the street. So I'm a guru with her fish. Today fish was burned on one side but still taste gd, I enjoyed the plantain with the spicy sauce. Since she moved to a shop, fish plate became smaller and smaller, restaurant does need more lighting during the day. I understand that at night time, it does beam and looks like a club. I have never been here at night, so can't say. When I walk in today, it was too quiet and I keep wondering if they're still in business. I wonder why there was no music playing and the lady taking the order was on the phone in a dark. I thought of going to boiling crab but I needed a different appetite this evening. I can understand the ratings on this place. The ONLY good thing on the menu is the baked tilapia and plantains. Anything else, FORGET IT. You would have to go to a proper Nigerian restaurant that has FULL Nigerian cuisine. Which there are a few good ones in TX. I was hungry so decided to pick at my fish while my husband drove. We had to make a u-turn and ask them the warm our food. Which I'm sure they tossed in the microwave instead of properly reheating it on a grill like any good cook would do! #3- Freezing cold indoor So they obviously only turn on the heat when they have enough customers and feel it's worth it. The food is good. I have been supporting this business for as long as they have been open. However, the ladies that take your order leave so much to be desired. When you call, they answer the phone with "hello." You have to push for answers. And when you show up to order, you'd be lucky if you're greeted. Quality has dropped severely over the past year. Bought 4 fish and plantain meals today, only to get home and 2 of the fish were half cooked and inedible. So thats $40 down the drain. It will be a while before i return and when i do, I'll be sticking a fork in the fish before leaving, so make sure it's cooked through. read more

So I have to post this and I hope the owner who has changed her attitude some smiles more and is a bit courteous lately. I come here maybe once or twice a month and yesterday 12/07/16 I got some food here and honestly I am terrified by what I found in my food. I was eating the head of the fish when I felt something scratching my tongue. Mind you, I had my 4 wisdom teeth pulled three weeks ago and I thank God I never tried to swallow or chew with my side teeth. I found a huge piece of stainless steel about an inch and a half long. I am so thankful it was me eating this particular fish. So I will share my picture and just FYI I will never go back there. Anybody reading this please try this other place in Irving. Great Food!! Whole Tilapia is cooked to perfection with the rice and red sauce. The service could be better, more enthusiastic and friendly for customers . I would recommend more red sauce on the rice as it is not enough to distribute throughout the portion of rice given. My husband and I love to get the tilapia and rice. The roasted fish is great but the customer service is horrible. I stopped by here on 3/3/18 evening and had tried to call for 1 hour to place my order and no one was answering. So I drove there and when I arrived it took 30 minutes for the young lady to come take my order even though I was standing at the counter. When she finally decided to give me the time of the day, I asked how come they were not answering the phone and she said they were too busy! When I tried placing my order she said it will be a 2 hour wait which could have been avoided if they had picked up the phone when I tried calling 2 hours earlier. I traveled almost an hour to get here only because Salt and Pepper was closed. I definitely won't be back. It was a waste of time, money, and gas. First I wanted jollof rice but they didn't have any. Ok fine, let me just get the egusi soup WITHOUT ANY MEAT! She repeated it back to me to make sure "no meat" is what I said. I told her that's correct. Not even five minutes later they told me my order was ready. Only to get all the way home and see that it's loaded with meat. I decided to just deal with it and remove all the meat. Now I'm no expert on African cuisine but this was by for the worst Egusi I had ever eaten, AND SEEN. It didn't even look appetizing, but I still tried to eat it. I took a few bites and decided I just couldn't do it. It wasn't good at all. It was the most bland African dish I had ever tried. Maybe they ran out of spices idk. And I also ordered plantains that I thought I was going to eat in the car on the way home. WRONG! They too were not edible. Old and dried out. Literally was only able to take one bite. My cousin and I had lunch here a few weeks ago, just before my return trip to Houston. She was in the mood for Nigerian food, and so was I. We're both Nigerian, so we definitely know what to expect when it comes to the food. The decor itself is definitely more lounge than restaurant, with the dark lighting, and lounge area with the couches and low tables (not very comfortable for sitting and eating lunch). During the day, they have a tv tuned to soccer. What else would it be turned to?! Service is cafe style, you order at the counter, and they bring it to your table. We didn't interact with much of the staff, but the guy that took our orders and brought them to us was actually quite pleasant. When ordering, you have the choice of tap water, or buying bottled water for $1. (this option is typical in Nigerian/African restaurants). You can order stew and then select the kind of meat you want to go in it. My cousin ordered rice and stew, and I ordered fufu and egusi stew with chicken. When our orders came, I immediately noticed that the chicken in my egusi stew had come from the pot of stew that my cousin had with her lunch. I noticed this because the stew she ordered is tomato based, and my soup was NOT. Say what? They couldn't have just rinsed that off before plopping it on top of my soup? Tacky, tacky. Anywho, I hadn't had fufu in a few months, so I was excited to dig in. Then, not so excited. Our bowls of stew were drenched in oil, which was pretty gross. Nigerians typically cook with palm oil, which adds a certain overall flavor--not bad by any means, just one that I'm used to. Whatever the owner uses, it's NOT palm oil, so this threw the flavor off slightly. My cousin said a friend of hers mentioned that the owner uses vegetable oil since it's cheaper. I'm inclined to believe the friend's statement. I understand wanting to cut costs, but I'd honestly rather pay a little more for the food if it'll mean that it taste more authentic. Another Yelper was spot on about the egusi being drenched in pepper. Actually, it's more like the bowl of pepper had a little bit of egusi stew in it. I wish they'd just cook the food and let the patrons season it to their individual tastes. But I guess that would be too easy. Aggie's is a stylish restaurant with a short menu. This is one of those good times though, as they seem to specialize in their items. Star attraction: the whole baked tilapia with fried plantains. Get that. It's that simple. The food came out super fast, but it tasted so fresh. Perfectly cooked throughout and just oozing with spices and flavors. It was well worth all the trouble of picking through all the bones and stuff. Oh, and the pepper sauce was awesome too. Absolutely perfect with the fish! I also got the Eru with fufu, which almost isn't worth mentioning. I've had stew with fufu before but this was just odd. Kind of like Indian spinach, but add beef and a bunch of oil. Very heavy and a strong smell. Service was okay. I walked in a little confused, you're supposed to walk up to the bar to order. I was highly inquisitive of all the strange-to-me things on the menu but the server didn't seem like she wanted to be chit chatty. This is supposed to be a restaurant where you can get African food. My experience here two year ago was bad. The service was very poor. I had a review up here before but yelp.com deleted it. Not sure why because it was appropriate and no bad words were included. The food was not great along with the poor poor service. I waited almost two hours to get my food to the table and I was seated alone. I thought that I could step out and have a nice dinner outing with me myself and I and chop down on some Nigerian food. I was wrong. Lol I do not care how good the food is when your customer service is poor it makes the food taste bad and that what happened to me. I strongly recommend not going here if you are looking for good service along with good food. if you don't like the review wrote then change the service. If u must have African food then order to go so you don't have to deal with the bad service. The best when it comes to african food. Most people go with the grilled Tilapia and plantains. Just know it maybe spicy for some people. I still get the spicy source to eat my tilapia. I have eaten at Aggies African Restaurant several times in the past. Here's what you can expect. First off, the restaurant is in North Dallas in a predominantly black neighborhood with a lot of small start up businesses by folks who don't have a lot of money. So it doesn't really stand out among it's surroundings. It is not 'fancy'. It is a hole in the wall. The decor is basic. So if you want fancy this is not it. It is more like a lounge. Second, I have read several of the other reviews and many seemed to speak about the poor customer service. I agree that the customer service is not that good. Every time I've gone I had to pretty much get their attention and even after getting their attention and ordering the food and having it brought to the table (they bring it to you most times) there's no more contact with the staff. No one asks how was the food. No one seemed to care. No one ever even seemed enthusiastic about my business and that's shocking as the meals are not that cheap for the portions you get. I have always overlooked this because I've always thought the people there simply weren't trained what "good customer service" is. They deal with a primarily African customer base who comes by the restaurant faithfully so they know they don't have to give 'great' customer service. It's sad but true. NOW THE FOOD.. A lot of people have commented on their dislike of the food. I have always found the food to be quite tasty. I liked it. However, I agree with others that the spinach dish is too spicy. It has way to much pepper in it and it really does make it almost inedible. I have spoken a few times to the owner about lowering the spice in the dish and she has never reduced it so I guess she feels its sufficient. But I agree it is way too much. PORTION SIZE.. I do not like the portion sizes for $13.00. At all. Most of what I get is vegetable and very little meat portions. Very small portions. I have always thought Aggies prices were not on par with what a person gets. I'm not sure why she charges what she does for the small quantities of food she gives out but the prices have always been too high. P.S. The Portion Sizes shown in the photos are wildly different than what I am accustomed to seeing when eating at Aggies. The portion sizes I have received and seen others receive are much smaller. For instance, I order the spinach meal that comes with spinach and fufu. No meat or very little meat. I pay $13.00 for this and it comes in a very small container. There's no way it should cost that much. But it does. ENVIRONMENT... The environment at Aggies is laid back. Lots of Africans. They are not the friendliest people. They aren't mean. But just oblivious to their surroundings. They don't speak. Make eye contact. Or anything of the sort. You are pretty much invisible to them. As I mentioned before the staff is pretty nonchalant. It's like it's only a job to them. But it's Aggie's dream so I still put up with it because I know how difficult it Is in America for a black woman to build her dream. It's a lot of African MEN. I have rarely seen African women There. But the place seems like a Man Cave. It's where they all come. So to sum up all of this.. The food is Tasty, however, A bit spicy for most tastes and the portions are rather small. The prices are a little higher than I would expect for the portion size. The decor is casual and not fancy. I tried this restraint looking for some "authentic" African and Nigerian food. Boy, was I disappointed! It took 10 minutes before someone showed up to take my order. They never brought our drinks to the table until they served the food which was 20 minutes after we ordered. Total of 30 minutes to get food from the time we walked in. The food was equally disappointing. The egussi was terrible and the baked fish also bad. The fish was not completely cooked and had raw spots in the middle. The egussi had so much pepper on it, it was not edible. We asked for new food as what we were served could not be eaten. They refused to replace the food or credit us for the terrible food. I will never return to this place. If the service had just been OK and the food edible, maybe I would try it again. But with bad, slow service and terrible food, no way.
