The restaurant was brightly lit, clean, and casual. We arrived around 7:30 p.m. on a weekday evening and had no trouble getting a table. *** OUR PICKS *** SALTED EGG YOLK GREEN BEANS ~ Our party felt the green beans weren't fresh and may have been frozen since they were all cut so uniformly. The salted egg yolk flavor was enjoyable, but the beans lacked the crisp texture of fresh green beans. 3.5/5 FRESH CUCUMBER SALAD ~ The cucumbers were refreshing, but they didn't seem to have been marinated long enough. We were expecting more of that tangy, garlicky flavor. It needed a bit more seasoning to give it that extra punch. 3/5 KILN 1/2 CHICKEN ~ Ah Ma's is known for its kiln chicken, and it definitely lived up to the hype. It was the best dish of our meal! It was juicy, tender, and served piping hot, so HOT that the server even wore two pairs of gloves to handle it! 5/5 We were planning to order the pan-fried noodles, but our server let us know they were no longer on the menu, which limited our choices. First time visit today based on Yelp reviews, thank you very much. I give this place a rare five stars based on two highlights: 1) The "Must Try Specialty" of a half Kiln Chicken is the bomb! They bake it wrapped up in foil like a giant Ji Bao Gai and then it's super tender and the juices with all the marinade and spices makes a great dipping sauce. The waiter wears clean gloves and offers to debone it for you, which is a true table-side joy... like getting caesar salads in the 1990s! One place serves a chicken sandwich with Hong Kong style buns. I got the Scrambled egg and Chicken Bo Lo Bun sandwich. It was tasty and with a not too sweet bun and the savory mix of chicken made the combination amazing. The egg and chicken combined with soft a bit sweet Chinese pinneaple bun makes this chicken sandwich different than most chicken sandwiches in SF and a must try because Ma and Ah Ma knows best. We ended up waiting about 20 minutes before being seated, which wasn't too bad for a weekend crowd. For ordering, they give you a big physical menu to look through, but you actually place everything through a QR code at the table. Once the order was in, the service was pretty quick. They are known for their Kiln Chicken, which came out last. They actually have someone bring it to the table to open it up and break it apart right in front of you. Came to Ah Ma's Kitchen and enjoyed it! We ordered several dishes to share and all of them were pretty good! We started off with the XXXL boba because why not? Turns out, the boba is actually grass jelly which is nice because that's a little more refreshing and generally easier to chew. It also pairs well with the robust HK milk tea. Having said that, if you were looking for a boba experience, it will leave you pining for that chewiness. Next came the salted egg green beans, kiln chicken, and black pepper beef macaroni. Honestly, all of these are recommended. The beans were crisp but very bold with that salted egg yolk flavor. The kiln chicken is essentially XL foil wrapped chicken from dim sum but I can appreciate the table side presentation to really highlight how tender the chicken is. I did find the "special sauce" or jus to be a tad salty though. As for the macaroni, I applaud their use of a gluten free pasta. The springiness of the noodles were really good and ironically I had a second version of this later in the evening (despite never seeing it ever before?) with regular semolina pasta and Ah Ma's was world's better. We also added the spicy wontons which came sitting in this mala soy sauce that was really good! Would have as a dip for everything! As for the pineapple bun sandwich, it was just okay. I personally could have used more mayo to give it some unctuousness. It was pretty dry sandwich in my opinion. For Mother's Day ( Sunday ) lunch with 11:30 am reservation, fortunately we ( party of 9 ) were able to have reservation and got seated right away. When the time we arrived, there is a crowd for waiting list. Inside setup just like its name, very home / grandparens' house, neat and clean. The chicken is juicy and flavorful, a bit too salty for me. The rest dishes are flavorful as well, but a bit too salty for me, glad the service is good enough to keep filling water for me, with water, I can enjoy the food. Pack your patience when you come because the wait was over an hour . When we finally got seated the server told us the kitchen is closing sopk and we had to order in the next 10 mins. Here's what we ordered and the ratings 5/5 - klin chicken -half. - the chicken came out piping hot and it was the most juicy and tender kitchen I've ever had . This reminded me of the foil wrapped chicken that I used to get as a kid at dim sum restaurants. 3/5 - stirred fried black bean macaroni - this one was ok. The four of us ordered a cucumber salad, 1/2 kiln chicken, black pepper beef macaroni, and a scrambled egg and pork pineapple bun. The cucumber salad was ok, on the plain side. This is a must-try. ​Garlic Broccoli A well-made and flavorful vegetable dish. ​Stir-Fried Black Pepper Beef Macaroni This was my favorite dish, and I was surprised by how good it was. This isn't the standard pasta you'd find in mac and cheese; I believe it's rice macaroni, as it has a chewy, bouncy texture. The black pepper flavor was nice and strong. My only complaint is that the portion was a bit small--I wish I had more! ​Kiln Chicken (Half) From my understanding, this is their signature dish. My husband & I stopped by Ah Ma's Kitchen for lunch on Easter Sunday. Super packed but honestly the wait wasn't too bad especially for a holiday. We were seated I think within 30-45 minutes. I will say service was okay, they're super busy and constantly running around. We weren't given any utensils or water. Te space is pretty small so if customers insist on waiting inside by the door, it creates a blockage for them, which did happen while we were here. We ordered the half kiln chicken, deluxe chow mein, scrambled egg & pork pineapple bun, XXXL boba milk tea & iced HK milk tea. There were so many other items on the menu that we wanted to try but will halve to return with a few friends/family so we can order more lol. XXXL boba milk tea & HK milk tea - 7/10 the tea is pretty flavorful & surprisingly not sweet given that we didn't ask for any adjustments. Interesting twist with the giant grass jelly "boba". Deluxe chow mein- 7/10 super flavorful however for a deluxe the portion was just okay, the shrimp in the chow mein was super small and the dish overall was a little more oily. I would ask for less oil next time if we were to order it again. Scrambled egg with pork pineapple bun - 8/10 the pineapple bun was super flakey and over the dish was good. I think the only knock is the size of the pork cutlet, it was moist & not super dry. Also wondering if they make the buns in house or partner with another bakery?? Half kiln chicken - smelled so good even just as they were unwrapping the layers of foil. Beautiful roasted & well seasoned! They debone the chicken for you at the table! That said, I do wish I had dined in, since having the chicken broken apart tableside seems like part of the experience that you miss with takeout. We also tried the cold cucumber salad and the stir-fried broccoli with garlic, both solid sides. The spicy wontons had more of a mala-style heat, with that lingering numbing spice that builds at the end. I also ordered wontons with noodles, and the broth was surprisingly rich and flavorful. It did have tiny dried shrimp in it (complete with little eyeballs), which was... interesting, but it added depth to the taste. I did find myself reaching for a splash of soy sauce but I love a salt lick (so that might be me). They didn't have their tempting egg rolls that from the menu photos you could practically hear the crunchy shatter; we chose Spicy Wontons ($10.95) that were very tender and flavorful though lacked a spicy note. I was puzzled. No spicy oil was spilled in our takeaway bag. Sizzling Black Pepper Beef ($19.95) was tasty though over-reliant on sliced white onions. I couldn't put my finger on the seasoning, a slight shift in flavor from two different soy sauces? The XXXL Boba, a big hit, my son loves boba drinks and Ah Ma's is Insta ready! Ah Ma is definitely "ultra-maxing" social media and it's drawing in customers, good for them. The restaurant is spare and clean with a pop of color from the orange-backed seating. The owners lavished praise for my son's very good Mandarin. He relishes speaking it and appreciates the compliments from native speakers. Eating at Ah Ma's kitchen, which actually is called Ah Ma's Kiln Oven in Cantonese, is a flavor journey. It's an experience, much like one you would pay for at a fancier restaurant like Four Kings in Chinatown. But once you make your way to a table after perhaps a 30-40 minute wait, it's a low-key, casual, tasty and satisfying experience. It's not just a meal - it's an outing. I don't have that many photos because I was busy eating. We got their signature chicken. I rolled my eyes when I saw an influencer talk about how she was sucking on the bones because the flavor was that good. Then I found myself at a table here with many in my party devouring the chicken and sucking on the bones. This dish is delicious. We also got the egg yolk salted fried chicken wings - a must-try, pork chop over scallion lo mein (pork was a little dry but the scallion lo mein was A++), ngau jaap egg noodle soup - beef offals which tastes way better than it sounds. Here they made it lo seui braising style, which means the braising sauce is reused and gets better w each batch. It's a very traditional Cantonese cooking method. My own father treats his lo seui sauce like it's some magical elixir. Everything came out slowly because they were making it fresh after we ordered. Service is amazing. Chose this place to get dinner after hearing the raves about how juicy the kiln chicken was. Only one waiter was working so the service was a bit lacking, we had to get the menus ourselves. Sizzling black pepper beef - flavorful black pepper, they definitely weren't stingy on it. But the beef was a bit too chewy. Scrambled egg with pork pineapple bun - the egg and bun was done perfectly but the pork had a big piece of fat. Kiln chicken - a bit disappointing for me. We got here around 1:30 in the afternoon and most tables were taken, only two tables were open but still wasn't cleaned. It took close to 10 minutes for us to get seated a table, didn't get a menu until 5 minutes later we were sat, and didn't get even water until 15 minutes later. I believe there's only 1 gentleman that's taking orders and running food. The other woman I believe only bussed the tables. She was really just standing there for most of the time...so I won't knock it down too hard with stars since I know that being a one-man show is hard to do. Hopefully they can get more staff! (Please be patient!) Other than that, the food was pretty good. We ordered quite a bit, but my favorite was the Dragon Wings and the Spicy Wontons (it was more of a flavor spicy than a hot spicy). We also got the Kiln Chicken (half), beef chow fun, garlic green beans, sweet & sour pork, and the XXXL "boba" Milk Tea. The garlic green beens were great! The Kiln Chicken was okay in my opinion. It was underwhelming, but good flavor as long as you dunk your piece in the sauce at the bottom. The beef chow fun and sweet & sour pork were good. I'd recommend it! The XXXL "boba" milk tea was a cool drink to experience! But I probably wouldn't order it again. Overall, it was a great experience! The food was notably enjoyable. Some neighborhood friends have been frequenting this new eatery on a quiet block on Clement Street. Coming on a Monday around 7 pm, I found parking a block away as I thought it was on that more vibrant block. There were two small parties dining already when I walked in and was given my choice of tables. I chose one halfway in to the right and waited for my friend. Due to a miscommunication error on my part, I ended up dining alone so sharing dishes was not an option. I decided to order a couple of things to eat and a couple to take home for future meals. The sauce is sweet with a mild heat from sweet chili one that is on the wet side. Definitely more of a fusion take on this traditionally northern Chinese or Taiwanese dish. There were six good sized wings and I ate half of them here. I was a bit disappointed likely due to high expectations. Only the top is a "pineapple" flavor and texture as the bottom is a mere burger bun. Think of this as a Chinese version of the Italian classic Cacio E Pepe without the cheese. This is probably my favorite item that I tried and I would get this again. the food concepts sounded better than they tasted. i got the pineapple bun chicken sandwich, chicken fillet lo mein (they were out of beef and pork lol), kiln chicken, garlic string beans, and a hong kong milk tea (also out of the XXXL boba ). my favorite dish was the lo mein and the milk tea was delicious and actually hot. everything else was nothing crazy, the kiln chicken was actually super dry and salty (not rlly worth). place was really clean tho and had very cute, modern decor. read more

The bowl of shrimp wonton noodle soup was big and tasty!! A bit pricey ($14 plus you then need to add tax and tip). Surprised to find this homey restaurant just off Park Presidio near 12th Avenue. Reminded me of a Hong Kong diner in Kowloon. I was coming from the Legion of Honor Museum after seeing the Manet & Morisot exhibit. I was starving and seriously in need of soup noodles. The staff member was very nice to let me order food at 2:40pm when the restaurant was going to close for mid afternoon break at 3pm. Clean, bright dining space with a calm ambiance on a weekday. Had to admit, we came here to try their XXXL boba milk tea! The boba is actually like grass jelly. So if you're a fan of grass jelly then you will like it! You can literally drink it along with the milk tea because it dissolves together in the straw! The milk tea itself is really strong which I like for my own preference. They recommended the KiLn half chicken and it was delicious! They have this whole side of the wall explaining how to "Eat like a Pro." The scrambled egg with pork pineapple bun turned out juicy and just right! The top part of the pineapple bun was all crunchy and blended in pretty well with the entire sandwich! We also ordered garlic string beans and scallion oil lo mein with beef brisket and I would totally ordered these 2 dishes again too! Service was kinda lacking cuz it was only 1 person working when we were there but overall inside had a lot of space and clean! Would definitely go back again soon! This restaurant has comfortable seating and is clean. The food is basic. It's nothing to write home about. My wonton soup tasted like water. My husband's beef brisket soup tasted like five spice powder and oil. My brother gobbled up his deluxe chow mein so it must have been good. Prices aren't cheap for the quantity and flavor. A new place with interesting menu. Service was excellent. Staff was attentive and willing to solve any problems. Pineapple buns sandwich was the star of the show, big portion, juicy patty and buttery buns, my favorite! Cucumber salad was good too. Salted egg yolk green bean has good flavor, but I felt like the green bean was blanched before stir-frying, so the texture was not quite what I wanted. Kiln chicken was slightly too salty for me. Stir fried noodles with beef was not great as the meat seemed not fresh. We raised the concern to the waiter. Good thing is that they immediately offered to replace the dish.
