This is one of the best spot that I've found! Tried their lao papaya salad, medium cos I can't handle much spice, perfect. Tried their khao piek, so much flavour! We ordered: green curry chicken (spicy 5) with white rice, tom kah vegetable (spicy 3), drunken noodles chicken (spicy 3), and mango sweet rice. We live in downtown Chula Vista and for the last 8 years, we have driven 20 miles round trip to get our favorite Thai food. But we decided to give Ahan Lao a try. It's less than 2 miles from our home and we really like to support local businesses. Although it took us 2 weeks to finally stop by, we are so glad we did because... The food is SO GOOD, we would have driven 20 miles to get to it. It's better than our two (previously) favorite spots! My favorite part of green curry is the eggplant. And I hate when places skimp on it. But, they didn't here! There was plenty of tender eggplant. And the chicken was moist and not overcooked. The Tom Kah was truly the best we've ever ever EVER had. We could not stop saying how TASTY it was between every piping hot bite. Incredible. The vegetables were al dente, the broth - rich and varied in flavors, the spicy level - perfect. Such a treat. Mommy ate the drunken noodles with chicken. I didn't try it because I don't eat gluten but she said it was definitely better than our two other regular spots. Even the mango sweet rice was better! How is that possible?! Because, honestly, you can't botch mango sweet rice. And my other spots are delicious. There isn't anything wrong with them but this one was seriously better. Crazy. The restaurant is very clean. They have plexy glass up, hand sanitizer out and everyone working was wearing masks. There were two tables for two under a canopy in the parking lot. And another table for two on the sidewalk, right next to the door. The woman who took our order was friendly and helpful. She was able to answer my question for my next visit: can the Pad Thai be made gluten free? -Yes! The food was ready in 10 minutes. And, the prices are VERY reasonable. Anyway, we're excited. We cannot wait to come back or tell all our friends. We hope you enjoy Ahan Lao as much as we have. Sorry no pictures. We were too busy enjoying our food. Oh! This was my first eating out experience (not takeout) since mid March. It was such a great first time back experience. (Thank you, Ahan Lao. As someone who has lived with chronic illness for nearly 2 decades, this pandemic has made my world quite small. I can't tell you how nice it is to have very good food so close to home. I'm so grateful). Because the parking lot separates the strip mall from the main road, I hardly heard or noticed the street noise and I could not smell any exhaust. And there was very little foot traffic. We came to dine-in (the sidewalk table for two) around 7pm Friday before Labor Day. I had some leftover green curry but as soon as I got home my father, who doesn't usually eat green curry, wolfed it down and said it was delicious. So there you go. Dad approved. read more

I'm so happy Ahan Lao opened up in Chula Vista. Finally a Laotian spot close to home! I liked that there's an option to place an order on the website, so that gave me enough time to browse the menu and decide what to order. I ordered the beef jerky, papaya salad, sticky rice and pineapple fried rice. I loooove lao beef jerky and it tasted so good with the sticky rice and papaya salad. Honestly, everything we orded tasted really good. Lots of flavor! My bf order level 10 spicy for the pineapple fried rice and it was really spicy just like he wanted lol. It's a great opportunity to try Laotian food. I wanted to try the Nam Khao crispy rice after reading about it online. The guy taking our order wondered if we Anglos would like it due to the fermented sour pork, but it was really good. Didn't taste fermented or sour to me, just delicious crispy food. The papaya salad has a real nice chili kick to it, too. If I lived closer it would be on our favorite restaurant rotation list! Yum! read more

The place is nice and clean and remodeled from the previous tenant,considering the strip mall is old. The food is really tasty and above standard. The best Thai place in town! At least we think so! My favorite is the Tom Kha but they do only have one size so either order to share or as your main entree. They are usually very fast (unless it's a busy Friday or holiday) and it's ready for pick up within 10 min. Very nice staff and personal, they know my husband's voice when he calls and his order. Takes quite a bit for me to be this impressed!! Just received a delivery order from Ahan Lao, and even the packaging was very clean!! What I really like to enjoy about any food is to actually taste the ingredients, not just the oil or spice it was cooked in. Had drunken noodles with shrimp; every ingredient was delicious! Crab rangoons with REAL crab; Chicken wings fried just right; Veg egg rolls good; and Crying tiger steak salad - yummy!!! Will be trying more! Could not wait for this place to open. Since then we bu7y carry out once a week. My husband loves the Panang Curry with chicken, and I always get Tom Yum soup with chicken. We just love having a Thai restaurant nearby and that it is so inexpensive and GOOD! The "bread" is a great addition and we are getting into the egg rolls now. read more
