Roppongi is so legit. We went here the first night they were open. The Hot Rock steak is a really cool dining experience. And that crab tower is really neat. The half price apps from 4-6 are where it's at. They're super affordable. Been here 3 times and it's just great every time. Plus they have NA Asahi. The Sweet & Sour Calamari. Damn. It's probably the best calamari AND sweet & sour sauce I've ever had. I'm picky about that sauce too. Like really it's that good. I hope this place actually sticks around because it's so good. I just visited Roppongi and I was mind blown! Is located inside of a hotel. The views are spectacular, we had more of a gloomy day but it was still beautiful! They gave us some warm disposable towels to clean your hands, so fancy. The service is 10/10! Very pleased by that! They have a huge selection of drinks! This place was strange. When you walk in, they ask if you want Sammy's or Roppongi. We asked if we could sit down and order from either restaurant, but the waiter said no. Half of the outside space is for Sammy's and the other half is for Roppongi, and you have to choose before being seated. It felt confusing and disjointed from the start. We chose Roppongi because we saw online they had sushi and we were craving sushi with a sunset view. We were seated, given menus, and hot hand towels. We ordered drinks, but even with the place being slow (maybe five tables total between both restaurants), it took almost 30 minutes to get them. The cocktails were NOT good. Both tasted flat and salty. During that whole wait, we had no water service, no napkins or place settings, and no one checked on us. When our waiter finally came back, we asked about the menu because it had no sushi, no raw fish, not even a poke bowl. The closest option was the crab stack. She explained that they did have sushi, but the sushi chef left to open a new restaurant in La Jolla, so they had to take it off the menu. Very strange decision for a new restaurant. We ordered the lobster dumplings on her recommendation. They came out quick relative to the drink timing, but we waited about five minutes before they brought silverware or plates. We just sat there laughing at how comical the whole experience was. When we finally tried them, they were clearly frozen dumplings, nothing special. After that, we got the check and decided to go somewhere else for dinner. It's a shame because the view is gorgeous and the restaurant has a lot of potential. But the management seems to be the real problem. Slow cocktails, slow service, a menu completely changed within months of opening, and no sense of care from the staff. I am coming at this review as someone who eats at very high end restaurants and eats at a new restaurant 3x a week. With that said I really wanted my first time at Roppongi to be good. I held my excitement to come here for a few weeks. We came in on a Thursday night at around 8, ordered a couple cocktails, I ordered a simple lychee martini and my husband got the melon cocktail with Midori. Initially I noticed it took awhile for them to return to our table to put in the other. I feel the drinks are a bit on the hot side price wise. A couple bucks cheaper would sit a bit better. One small note that I noticed right off the bat is that we were seated at a four top and they never removed the other two place settings at our table. Such a small point but a detail I noticed none the less. We ordered the crispy tofu, tom yum soup, short rib dumplings Sm and chicken satay. We were never asked for we wanted them to come out +the answer for us is always, as it's ready). The soup hit the table five minutes before the rest , it was piping hot and honestly the best soup I've ever had. It was very expensive and quite small but I would 100% return just for that mouth watering soup. The rest of the items were dropped off at the table all together. Ok not a problem, maybe they were just ready at the same time. NOPE I took one bite of the short rib and it was cold both inside and out. Texture and flavor are good, I can tell they are in house made. The crispy tofu was not terrible but also not my fav. The pieces are giant and only lightly fried but the strong soy flavor is something that would make me want to order again despite the huge squares. After almost finishing we finally saw our waitress again and asked for share plates which arrived immediately. When they got back I informed her about the cold dumplings which we had both only taken a bite of at that point. We then asked for boxes and the bill. Near perfect family dining experience! Please know which restaurant you want reservations for since the hotel split it into Roppongi Asian Bistro on the left side and Sammy's Restaurant + Bar on the right. The food is a 9 out of 10 for this type of cuisine. We really liked the Asian restaurant design and decorations which had some nice touches. Let's talk about the tasty crispy tofu, pineapple fried rice, pork belly drunken noodle, Indian satay, Mongolian grilled shrimp, Kahlúa pork spring rolls that was done right! The only complaint I have is that the warm miso soup should be better served at a hotter temperature. I really wish I'd known they took sushi off the menu before hand because the rest of their food is just really terrible, I'm almost positive it's just reheated Sysco products. I had my family in town and really hyped up their sushi as it was so fresh previously, I was so embarrassed when they brought out the dining equivalent to chicken nuggets. The prices are absolutely asinine, my family is already skeptical of CA prices and I was hoping to show them that sometimes they're worth it but instead this just reinforced the stereotype of paying $20 for prepackaged food. 2 stars because our waitress was super nice and gave us a free dessert. We ordered the Crab Yakisoba, Crying Tiger Steak, and Chef's Choice Sashimi -- everything was fresh, flavorful, and beautifully presented. The Crying Tiger Steak in particular was tender and perfectly cooked, and the sashimi selection felt premium. I was a huge fan of Roppongi when it was in downtown La Jolla, which closed several years ago. So, I was very excited to visit this new location of the restaurant. I have been three times. I wanted to be able to give the restaurant more stars, but they're simply not warranted yet. The issue isn't the quality of the food - it's quite good. It's everything else. The food is very good, particularly the crab stack, the wasabi-batter onion rings and the kung pao calamari steak. The bar is a problem. All three times I've visited, it took a long time (more than half an hour after ordering) for drinks to arrive from the bar. All three times, the restaurant was far from capacity; twice, it was really, really empty. The lychee martini is excellent, but waiting half an hour for it is excessive, especially when no one was sitting at the bar and the restaurant was close to empty. The host staff need to up their game. My second visit, I requested an ocean front table with the overhead space heater. The hostess said there were no space heaters for the oceanfront tables. I told her that I'd sat at one previously, and pointed out the exact table (which was unoccupied). It has an overhead space heater. Similar to other reviews, timing of the dishes coming out of the kitchen is inconsistent. One visit, everything came out quickly, almost all at the same time. Another visit, nothing came out for at least 40 minutes after ordering. I really hope that Roppongi can work out the kinks and make a go of it. One server said they are reopening in La Jolla later this summer. I hope the IB location makes it but given how empty it's been all three times I've visited, I'm not sure that will be the case. read more

Beautiful setting, but there were handprints all along the glass and food under the table when we sat down, which was offputting. Clean between seating is important and clearly there had been kids where we were sitting so it should've been an extra priority.. The staff was really nice, but the back of the house needs to work. Food: OMG! What a disappointment! The best thing I was served was the water. It was cold and it tasted wonderful. Everything else was meh to tasteless and I sent it back the "Hamachi Tacos". They were not only tasteless, but easily one of my greatest culinary disappointments in the last few years. The Tom Kha Soup was little better. I got one small shrimp, five edamame beans, and maybe a half dozen kernels of corn in my soup topped with a few stingy bit of fresh cilantro. The broth (more like a bisque) was flavorful but not for what I was charged. Finally the spicy tuna roll was okay, but slightly worse than any spicy tuna roll from any sushi restaurant in San Diego while also being far more expensive than any sushi restaurant outside of London. To their credit they do use real wasabi paste, so thank you! Service: The service was competent and the waitstaff cared. The food didn't take too long to arrive and it was plated very nicely. Ambiance: Hey, it's on the beach and that was almost perfect! Early July at 6:00 - 7:00 was great! I will try them again in a few months and see if they improve. I hope! We had fantastic date night at the new Roppongi Asian Bistro and can't wait to go back! The evening included ocean front dining (and a gorgeous sunset view), stiff and creative cocktails, a diverse and DELICIOUS offering of menu items, and great service in the newly renovated space. We dined at the Roppongi in La Jolla many years back and were so excited to see this new location open and offer such an expansive menu of original and new offerings - I look forward to enjoying the OG crab stack next visit. I've been hoping to see a high-quality restaurant come to the area and am so glad it finally did. We tried multiple dishes and would order every single one of them again. The sashimi and sushi dishes (including the shitake mushroom sashimi) were high-quality, fresh, and uniquely flavorful. The fish was the star here and you can tell that they source quality ingredients. The lobster dumplings were rich yet fresh. The crying tiger steak entrée had wonderful flavor with an unexpectedly generous portion of steak which will be a big hit when we bring our son back for family dinner night. This never happens. A wonderful restaurant that you loved for many years, doesn't go out of business and 10 years later wind up in the exact same spot with the exact same menu with the exact same owner and the exact same chef. And yet I saw a sign in La Jolla, near the San Diego Museum of Contemporary Art, saying it's happening this year. Roppongi in La Jolla was a special type of Asian fusion featuring fresh ingredients blended together creatively and beautifully so as not to muddle the flavors and plated aesthetically giving each dish an artfully thought out appearance. But wait, this review is about Roppongi in Imperial Beach. Explanation: Not only is the restaurant in La Jolla being resurrected this year by famous San Diego restauranter Sami Ladeki but a second outpost opened first in IB last month. Again, with the same menu as La Jolla had. So in advance of the reopening in La Jolla we drove all the way, to Imperial Beach, from Vista, to see if it was indeed the real thing we were hoping for and here are the results: It's the real things and even better than we remember. The menu is about half tapas style dishes. These are usually servings meant to be shared and we find it's best to order two or three at a time and create you own combos until you're full. We had seven dishes that were wonderful and as excellent as we ever remembered them from La Jolla. There is also a well thought out wine list with lots of variety and interesting items. Service was excellent, I'm sorry I don't remember his name. Meals start with the presentation of hot towels almost as a magic trick (you'll see what I mean.) We started with what I think is their most famous dish, the Polynesian Crab Stack. A tall cylinder of layers of "pea shoots, red onion, cucumber, tomato, mango, avocado, lump crab, peanut, cilantro, spicy ginger-lime dressing" which the waiter blends at the table and you then scoop onto toast triangles, you get four, immediately ask for more. I think it's best to order two or three dishes at a time until you're full. Create you own combos. We got the Japanese Hot Rock which is thin slices of beef that you cook at the table on--a hot rock what else?--and dip into the accompanying sauce. What goes with steak? We paired it with the onion rings whose dipping sauce is a "wasabi-garlic aioli." As far as I know, with all the dishes we had over the years in La Jolla, and confirmed with the IB meal, you really can't go wrong with any dish. Everyone we had was a standout. Did I mention the Mongolian Duck Quesadilla? It's made up of "duck confit, pepperjack, Asian guacamole, balsamic glaze, micro cilantro." Oh yeah it's good. Deserts? I almost never eat. However I always have to have one here. There are only four and that's all they need. You will enjoy any one that you order. There are also entrees and lots of sushi offerings each with the Roppongi touch. With this one in IB and the return to La Jolla there is no reason for everyone in San Diego county not to try one or the other. However, I do have to point out this is in an upper middle price range of fine dining. It is not inexpensive, quality ingredients and preparation cost money, but you feel you've got your money's worth by the time you're done. In my reviews I try to also mention a few things that I think would be improvements. All I've got with Roppongi is that they should give a minimum on their crab stack of eight toast triangles. My only other negative is to reach their overflow room we passed through a server's station with a pitcher and wiping rag on it. It clashed with the beauty of the rooms. Speaking of which the interior design, decor and setting are beautiful AND comfortable. By the way, there are stunning views of the ocean no matter where you sit. This violates my dictum that you get either great views or great views, but here you get both. Go. read more

We live in Coronado and Recently tried the new restaurant Roppongi in Imperial Beach. We were excited to try it, as we used to go to the La Jolla location before it closed. The location beachside is lovely but I was very disappointed by the high prices and small food portions. Especially considering this is Imperial Beach. Small bites (3 pieces) dumplings from $15-21. Duck dumpling filling was mushy, short rib dumpling pricy and unremarkable. Spicy tuna roll was just "OK". Probably best item was the $30 Crab Stack. Cocktails are creative but also $15ish and small. We had Dark &Stormy rum cocktails served in a tall narrow glass filled with ice (not much cocktail). We decided on cocktails because the wine list is so oppressive. Least expensive bottle was almost $70 with most bottles priced much higher. Restaurants need to have at least several reasonably priced bottles ($35-45) to allow their patrons to have a choice whether they want to upgrade or not. read more

A little Far from central San Diego, but beautiful location on the beach! Menu is very similar to when they were open in La Jolla. We used to go to their happy hour twice a week bc it was that good! Portions are smaller (specifically the calamari), but still great taste. We also got the short rib potstickers, hot rock, onion rings, tartare trio, and kefir cheese. Hot rock & kefir cheese were amazing, as usual. Our waiter Rahim was very nice & accommodating. Can't wait for their La Jolla location to re-open. Recommendations: bring back Roppongi happy hour; allow guests to order from both menus, different dipping sauce for hot rock, bigger portion & more sauce for calamari, kid friendly menu on Roppongi menu...otherwise THANK YOU for bringing back one of my favorite restaurants! read more
