My husband was born on Maui and loves Hawaiian food. He had heard about this place and wanted to check it out. He ordered Da "Spicy" Plate, which came with Guava Chili Pepper Chicken, Crispy Korean Chicken, Spicy Ahi Poke, Rice, and Mac Salad. Everything tasted great, and I want to go back and try other items on their menu!
Good Hawaiian food. I can tell it's pretty authentic but just not for me. The portions are good. There's a decent amount of seating (about 10 on bar, 5 giant tables to fit 6-8 people - inside and outside, and 2 smaller tables of 4 people). On a wild hot evening, it's actually preferred to sit outside because inside was a bit stuffy. They'll bring you the food if you're dining there. It came out pretty quickly.
I used to go to the StretchLab next door and every weekend I would see a line out the door for this place. There is also a Target in the center so parking can be a bit full but you can either circle the parking lot a few times or park a little further out and walk. There are tables inside to eat. There menu has a good variety of food. I got the Korean Chicken which I enjoyed. Would be interested to try their poke next time.
The best Hawaiian food in Costa Mesa hands down. I would recommend going with anything under the Ai Pono Originals section on the menu or any combo plate so you can get more than one protein option. Don't just stick with one protein. There was plenty of seating inside and out but I also went in the middle of the afternoon. I'm sure seating may be difficult during rush hour here. Don't be discouraged if you see a long line, the service is fast. Expect to spend $15-$20ish a plate. The only things I didn't like were the sides when bought separately. I got a side of mac salad and there was barely any. I got more in the actual plate. If I had to get a side again, it would probably be a musubi since there's no way they can skimp out on that.
The food here is so good! My kids really love this place - the ambiance is warm and authentic as if you're in Hawaii. We love that we can bring our goldendoodle too. Everything here is good but we like the Roots. Poke, Hawaiian macaroni salad, Kalbi, swordfish/any fish are all stand outs. The portions are generous and the service is friendly.
Their food is consistently delicious! We tried the "Da Chef's Plate", it comes with some fish, rice, beef gyudon, poke, and macaroni salad. The fish was super soft and almost melted in my mouth and I love the beef and the spiciness of the poke.
This has been on my list since forever! We were leaving Fashion Island and was getting hungry and decided to drop by on a Sunday afternoon! Plenty of seating inside and outside. They have picnic style tables that's divided with sauces so sharing table is pretty normal here. They also have a wall lined table so those were huge seating. Follow the marked signs to order inside. It was our first time so we asked what's good and she recommended the original plates. We decided to get Da Spicy plate that had 2 styles of fried chicken (guava chili pepper so flavorful and crispy Korean chicken- not horribly dry) and Da Roots that had ahi katsu shoyu tuna and Korean short ribs. Both were really good and came with macaroni salad and poke! Honestly it's what you crave for the day to mix and match which protein you want with the 2 sides of poke and macaroni salad. Lots of food. Delicious flavor. Will come back again!
Came in with my girlfriend for dinner on a Sunday night. Ordered at the counter and paid for the food. Grabbed a table and our drinks and food were brought to us by staff. Food was tasty. The only thing that missed for me was that the poke had way too much sauce for my taste. It tasted good and fresh but the ahi tuna was overpowered by the sauce keeping the flavor from coming through. The chicken was fried well, not over cooked. The sauce was tasty with some bite but not too hot for my girlfriend's mouth. The shrimp lollipops were good but the dipping sauce was a show stopper imo. Hawaiian theme throughout wit surf boards and island motif decorating the interior. Prices were reasonable and the portion sizes were good for meals. We will be back
Store hours on Yelp need to be updated but they are open Friday evenings from 6-9. I called to make sure as I saw on their website citing they were open. Place was busy but we didn't wait long after ordering. We got 2 roots plates and 1 plate of crack chicken. Also mango lemonade was SOOO good! Not overly sweet. Mango cheesecake was beautiful and I loved the flavor combo of purée and li hing! Everything was full of flavor and great variety of things. Wish the poke was a little more generous because it's so good! Love the homage to Hawa'ii and history provided on the walls. Definitely want to come back and try other options!
This place. All day, every day. If you have never had Hawaiian street food, or haven't had good Hawaiian street food, you haven't eaten at 'Ai Pono Cafe, and you should be. I only began eating Hawaiian street food and flavors about 10 years ago, and even in Honolulu, the North Shore or in Hilo, I have never had such amazing Hawaiian fare. The lace is true to the Hawaiian feel with posters and stickers and great Hawaiian decor everywhere. And even on the busiest days I have been there I have never waited longer than 10 minutes. I meant to review them leaving now my last trip here, but never got to it, but what I can say is the apriete of fresh fish, Korean short ribs, katsu ahi, shout ahi poke, Mac salad, Kim chee , nothing disappoints. So much flavor, so fresh, so perfect. Grab some spam masubi or shrimp lolli for a snack, or da roots plate or da mento f*ckin bento for a full meal and treat yourself to the islands. ALEAYS worth the stop!
Second time here and it hits just the same! I loved the ahi poke from my last visit so I tried the Makai Plate with the shoyu and spicy poke. The shoyu poke was gingery while the spicy poke had a decent kick, and the sauce was to die for. The garlic shrimp was also a hit from the Stockton Slap plate, juicy and zingy. It was universally agreed that the Korean Short Ribs were top tier- sweet and salty and full of saucy goodness. Though the line was long, it went quickly, and we got our meals within 10 minutes of ordering.

Solid Hawaiian spots that I def recommend trying at least once. I've def seen the line here get pretty long before so I would keep that in mind. The parking lot for this spot is usually pretty packed too but it's decently big so it's not too much of a hassle. I shared some stuff with two other friends and we were all super full and had leftovers Ahi poke nachos (spicy and shoyu sauce aka chef's way): 4/5 I think this might have been a special for the day or something so I'm not sure if they have it every day. I liked the wonton chips and they definitely give a good amount of fish. We didn't realize at first because a lot of it was at the very bottom but I think it was very much worth the price. Didn't realize there was something with wasabi in this though so that caught us off guard Da zombies plate: 4/5 the galbi was super soft and good. After that, I think my next favorite meat was the pork belly then the chicken. This came with very very tiny portions of sides and normal sized sauce. Overall liked it but would prob try something else next time Macaroni salad: 3/5 it was ok but I didn't personally like how much black pepper was in it Spam musubi: 4/5 pretty standard I liked it Note: if you're looking for poke, they only have ahi here and no salmon

1000% satisfied. If you're looking for some good Hawaiian plate lunch this is the spot. We got Da spicy and Da Stockton plate and it came out quick. We devoured the whole thing (barely talked that's when you know it's really good). Everything was flavored to perfection and the chicken wasn't dry. I like how the plate comes with poke too so we had a variety. The Mac salad was on point. Service was friendly and the vibes were like we were in Hawaii. It's located in a plaza next to target, parking is easy and there's plenty of inside/outdoor seating. Highly reco!! We'll be back to try the other dishes read more

Came here on a Friday night at 7:30pm and the place was packed! This is an order-at-the-counter restaurant and the service was very friendly and food came out fast. The atmosphere of the restaurant makes you feel like you just walked into Hawaii. I got "da roots plate" which came with lots of food which I'll rate here: - ahi poke 10/10 -- so fresh and well-seasoned - ahi katsu 8/10 -- fried to a perfect medium rare but I am not super into fried food so this is really personal preference, also the wasabi mayo hit hard haha - korean short rib/kalbi 8/10 -- a little fatty for me but nice thick and tender pieces - mac salad 10/10 -- this is always one of my favorite things when it comes to Hawaiian dishes and they make their mac salad creamy but not overwhelming or heavy read more

Favorite Hawaiian spot!! First tried this place in Vegas and went today to our local one in Costa Mesa and this place is amazing! When there's a line outside already before it even opens, you know it's good. Ahi tastes fresh. Tried two different plates and can't decide which one's my fave. Came on a Saturday at 3 PM by myself and I loved the vibe of the place! Water is self-service and you can sit anywhere you want it's a very casual place. This is one of my best finds of 2023!! Absolutely cannot wait to come back again and try the other things on their menu. The guava chili pepper chicken was out of this world. It was crispy, juicy, and well-seasoned! This place hits the spot. Being born and raised in Hawaii we often miss food from home. Ai pono definitely takes us back to the west side of Oahu! I love my fried noodles. The flavor was on point. It was a generous portion as well. If you like meat jun they have that too when you order Korean zombie. Mac salad was also good. Not all hawaiian food spots make it like they do back home. When ever we are in the area we always try to stop at Ai pono. So happy they opened a Vegas location too. We will need to check that one out one day read more
Ai Pono Cafe is such a vibe! I came in and they had good music blasting and the place was decked out with Halloween decorations. I tried the katsu chicken, green chili chicken, lumpia, and spam musubi. Everything tasted so fresh and delicious! The chicken was crispy and the mac salad had great flavors. They don't take orders over the phone, but you can order ahead online since it does get pretty busy. Highly recommend if you're craving Hawaiian food! read more
Ai pomo serves up quality hawaiian food and is a good choice for anyone who's craving fresh fish and hawaiian dishes. The service at this place was ok nothing special they definitely have regulars and I think they don't necessarily expect newcomers so the menu isn't particularly explained by the cashier very well - I'd rely on photos and ask around. One thing I do like is if you come enough you most definitely spot a little community- there is limited seating and some outdoor seats as well. As for the dish - the food is fresh and tasty it also comes paired with a few sauces for additional flavor if you dine in. I wasn't a huge fan of the seared tuna but the wasabi flavor on that was good. The portions are relatively small for the price and I'd consider this a more expensive meal - there are definitely other options for a better price but this place is well known. read more
Food - I tried Da Roots Plate and I would not get it again. The bone-in short rib a lot of sauce and was overcooked. The shoyu ahi poke did not seem fresh and the consistency of the fish was mushy. The only item I liked was the ahi katsu. I've never had any fish katsu and I enjoyed it since it wasn't heavy like chicken katsu can be. The mac salad was ok. Seating - There are a couple of tables outside and a handful of them inside, so it can get a little busy. Service - You order at the counter and the cashier was ok. Even though they have a drink fridge out front, you don't grab the drink yourself. read more
If you are looking for the best place for Hawaiian food you need to come here. I have been to Hawaii multiple times and I have to say this place has one of the best Hawaiian food! Their food is a 10/10. Their Muay Thai Garlic shrimp plate and Ahi Tuna Poke Plate is my favorite thing to order. Their "Muay" Thai Garlic Shrimp comes with Crunchy tiger shrimp, fried egg, citrus Thai chili nam pla vinaigrette, rice, cold slaw, and mac salad. Their coleslaw and fried egg is also really good and goes perfectly with everything. Their sauce and seasoning on the shrimp is so so flavorful. Their Ahi Tuna Poke Plate tastes so fresh and sometimes I order it with the shrimp. It also comes with rice, cold slaw, and mac salad. I would highly recommend those two items. Love the Hawaiian decor, little things in there remind me of my time in Hawaii. This place is definitely a quality or quantity restaurant, a little more on pricey side but worth it! Got the Chicken Katsu plate which came on a bed of rice, with Cole slaw, Mac salad and their Katsu sauce ($16.50). Everything was super good! Katsu was so crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. Sauce was super flavorful and not too sour (From my experiences with other Katsu sauce), Mac salad had nice seasoning and wasn't too mayo(ey). Also got a scoop of their ahi poke to try (Ate it with my rice :)). Super good and fresh poke! ($9 for a quarter pound scoop). Overall, everything was super tasty! read more

First time in today. Ordered the chefs plate to go, and they forgot the poke. Called to let them and they said I could either come back or have a free one next time I come in. Told them it's an inconvenience to have to drive back and I wasn't sure if I wanted to come back at all so asked for partial refund. They said no because I got a "full plate" when it was clearly missing something. read more

Very authentic looking Hawaiian restaurant when I walked in, felt like I was transported back there! Lots of parking in the big lot. I ordered da Stockton slap (they ran out of rice, we came around 7pm on a Friday). The Thai garlic shrimp was sooooo good and such a blast of flavor! My only complaint was that the portion was small for the price (only got 3 pieces of shrimp). The tuna poke was good. Sauce was delicious but wished it had more sauce! Overall a solid poke place that is a bit on the higher side price wise. read more

I don't know what happened to management it used to be good now it's disgusting chicken soggy not fresh macaroni salad no flavor taste like your taking a spoon full of mayo chicken extra seasoned. Also the service is bad the cashier so rude no personality just plain dry there's nothing but kids working no wonder it's not busy. Do better your basically throwing your money away. read more

This spot has been popping up all over IG for the last two years. I always wanted to try it. The food looks amazing. Chef has a chip on his shoulder. But in a good way. I see quite a lot of negative reviews that are in any way constructive or giving any type of feedback. Just blatant "This sucks" or "Staff are assholes". Well my friends you'll find none of that bull!@#$ here. Ai Pono is located in a large plaza. Outside is fitted with some tables. Inside is very nicely decorated with island flavors. Music on deck sets the vibe. The staff while I forget her name she was very very nice. I took my time to order and asked a few questions. Everything looks good. But I wanted to go with an OG style plate and something that only AiPono can do. So I went with the Loco Moco, Da Spicy Plate and added some muay thai shrimp which are like a sweet n spicy thing going on. Each table has various hot sauces. Plates all come in to go boxes. Ai Pono Moco. This was the best loco moco i've had. Definitely on par with loco mocos in Hawaii. The gravy is not too salty but flavorful, the patties were perfectly cooked and seasoned. The eggs while I wish they were or runny still had that yolk drip. Definitely ordering this bad boy again. BOMB. Da spicy plate you get two chickens and some poke. One guava spicy and the other is korean style. Both are really good and flavorful. Although its a spicy plate I didnt feel like it was spicy at all. But definitely tasted good. The poke was on point. Had a good chili oil base flavor and the spices went with it. I wanted more of the poke but I was full at this point. The sweet n spicy shrimp were great too. Cooked to order and just plenty of flavor. I grabbed the last long sleeve shirt for the GF. And they gave us a cheesecake to go. The cheesecake was delicious. Thanks Ai Pono keep that shit up. Located nearby to the Target, visited for lunch and ordered da Stockton Slap and find a seat on a stool on the counter facing the wall. There are also a few tables inside and outside, but do share the table if you aren't using it all. Interior can feel a little cramped when lots of people. Stockton slap came with shrimp and ahi on rice and ahi mixed salad. Shrimp was my favorite and loved the flavor. The blackened ahi had I think a Teriyaki sauce drizzle and the ahi salad was good but a tad too sweet. read more

I'm so glad I found this authentic Hawaiian restaurant! I stumbled upon this place by accident since traffic was bad on the I-405. I originally stopped at target to waste time and saw a line forming outside of this restaurant. I was interested in trying it since I just got back from Kauai on Wednesday and the long line outside the door was promising it would be good. Inside, I saw seating for about 16 guests at tables and about 4-5 guests at high top. I saw canned Hawaiian guava juices, sodas and a large menu of Hawaiian entrees. I was impressed with the variety of the menu and I ordered something that someone else in line recommended called "Da spicy plate." The stranger who recommended it said it wasn't too spicy for "a white guy" which reassured me that I'd be fine. I ordered it to-go so that my husband could also enjoy it with me. I added a spam masubi, because YOLO, and added the 3 garlic shrimp for $3 more. I took it home and counted down the minutes until my husband got off work. We reheated it, and both loved it! Perfect flavor and spices. Great portion size too. Only thing we didn't enjoy was the shrimp. The garlic shrimp was not de-shelled so it was troublesome to enjoy. Not sure if that was intentional or an oversight. All in all, we will be returning very soon and will just not order the added shrimp next time. Absolutely amazing. The crackhead chicken is addictive...that coconut and miso glaze is unlike anything you could find at a different Hawaiian spot. Their Mac salad is incredible. Sometimes Mac salad can be kind of flavorless, not this one. It's seasoned perfectly. The slaw isn't anything to write home about; I think its purpose is more decorative. Next time I'll order double Mac salad. And I have the left overs to pack for work lunch tomorrow. Ai Pono is amazing and seriously tops any other local Hawaiian establishment. Their vibe inside is casual and fun as well. Can't wait to come back! read more

My favorite go to Hawaiian food spot. Was able to finally able to able special. The portion sizes are very unpredictable here. The food is always good quality and the wait times are pretty short. Prices are also increasing pretty frequently here but always worth stopping by because the food is amazing. read more
I was craving for some Hawaiian fried chicken, i saw Ai Pono Cafe was near by and had pretty good reviews. I came by around 1130Am, and this place was pretty pack. I ordered the guava chili pepper chicken that comes with rice, asian slaw and mac salad. The order comes out quick, I open the box and 3 good looking fried chicken thigh. Taste wise, unfortunately did not live up to the hype. The guava chili pepper chicken was too salty for my taste bud, I prefer a sweeter sauce. If you like salty, you might like it more than me. Its one of those type where its too salty to just eat it by itself, you have to eat it with rice, mac salad and coleslaw which was nothing special either. Maybe other items on the menu might be better, but for me the Guava chili pepper chicken was not it and I would probably never order it again. read more

As someone who loves Hawaiian food, this was a little disappointing. Their signature chicken was so delicious, unfortunately I didn't order that. I got the chefs plate. The mahi was dry, and there wasn't anything special about the beef. The Mac salad and the poke carried the meal for me. Service was helpful. I was surprised by the plastic ware but overall it wasn't an unpleasant experience. read more

So much flavor in every bite. This place is absolutely delicious. I always do the spicy combo, it comes with fried chicken, chicken thigh, spicy poke, rice and Mac salad. It's a big portion and I always have leftovers. I first dig into the spicy poke and Mac salad as it is always my favorite. The seating is family style and can get pretty packed around lunch time but there is more seating outside as well. read more

Tried Ai Pono Cafe for the first time and went for their *Korean Style Chicken*--definitely the highlight. Crispy, flavorful, and lives up to the name! The mac salad was a standout: creamy, well-seasoned, and perfectly chilled. Slaw and rice were just okay, not bad but nothing special. First time here. Arrived at 12:35ish on a Sunday for lunch and they already sold out guava chili pepper chicken plate. We were craving chicken so we went with Da Spicy. I asked the cashiers taking our order if we can still have guava chili pepper chicken for this option since it says "SOLD OUT" and she said they still have enough for the Da Spicy. There's some capitalist logic there but we understand. Da Spicy came with one piece of guava chili pepper chicken and 2 pieces of Korean chicken, with sides of spicy ahi and Mac salad. Total $18.50 with another $3 order of spam Musubi. I'll give 4.5/5 for spam Musubi. Rice was soft and not overly drenched in sauce. Not 5/5 because it's not really special considering the portion and price. Our guava chili pepper chicken was straight up a disappointment. It was over fried--the meat was completely dried up and the flavor was missing. Korean chicken was a real surprise--not too spicy or salty and it was a healthy amount of heat. Spicy ahi was a little too dressed up. I think all I could taste was the sauce. If the fish was fishy there would be no way to tell. One major source of sadness was the rice in the plate. It was very dried and a bit undercooked. The rice with the Musubi met with true Asian standard; this one here would make Uncle Roger cry. I was debating between 3.5 or 4, and ended up with a 4. Speed of getting our food was amazing. And the food didn't hurt our stomach after 2 hours, so I think it's not crappy street food. Would I come back? Not sure. I like Matiki Island more, and Da Hawaiian's fried chicken is a easy win for me. read more

Very disappointing Hawaiian food. I got the Korean zombie plate and it comes with some sort of mystery flattened meat with no flavor. The ribs are overly sweet and sauce does not pair well or taste good. The customer service is also very poor. The cashier smirked while I asked for a refund and was very rude and said they have a no return policy (red flag!!). There are much better Hawaiian places than this overpriced, subpar one. read more

Have you ever had chicken so hard that it bent your forks? Have you ever had chicken so salty that your lips became dry and mouth stung? The overarching themes at Ai Pono were extreme salt and chicken overcooked to oblivion. After seeing a lot of hype over Ai Pono, I finally paid a visit and was drastically letdown by their Hawaiian food. We arrived to a long line for lunch. Guava Chicken skin was so hard that it bent the tips of our forks. We struggled to pierce the chicken skin. As expected, the skin was tough and unpleasant to chew. The meat was clearly overcooked and super dry (see picture for reference.) The seasoning had no taste of guava. I only tasted mild chili pepper and overwhelming salt. Dirty Lickin' Korean Chicken was overcooked and rubbery. There was no truffle flavor (as shown in the menu's description,) not even a hint. There were whispers of a sweet sauce on my tongue, but soy sauce and excessive salt overwhelmed the chicken. Overall portions were rather small for the price. The little scoops of mac salad and slaw were nothing special in flavor or texture. The cashier didn't seem friendly, but the server smiled a lot and worked quickly to deliver our food to us on the outdoor table. Inside the shop, it was small, crowded, hot and humid. We sat on one of the communal picnic tables outdoors, where it was cooler - the tables were uncomfortable wobbly. Anytime someone sat down and stood up from the seat, the bench wiggled side to side a lot. It startled us every time. The decor inside had Hawaiian vibes, but the largely printed profanity felt a bit tasteless. Unfortunately, food was disappointing in texture and flavor. I would not return here. read more
